Modern Love in Omaha - Isa Chandra's restaurant! Vegan fried eggs, calamari and more

I like her cookbooks and her attitude, Isa Chandra, that is. Sounds like some creative dishes there.

Hmm...post brain-injury, I've got some serious sensory processing difficulties which keep me in quiet spaces. I think I'd do well in the dining room of a silent meditation retreat or monastery. I'd love to share a vegan dinner at a silent monastery! Other than that, no matter how delicious the food, I suffer and sink in most restaurants. Rats! Or, how about a catered vegan lunch party at my place? Or, what about a catered weekday, mid-day picnic in a bucolic landscape? At the top of a mountain? At the seaside?

Hurray for vegan Chinese food! There's one a couple of hours away from me in Seattle called "Bamboo Garden." So good.

I used to live in the Bay Area and I've heard great things about vegan soul food in Oakland. Have you been? How about Gracias Madre in SF?

I've been to the Chicago Diner and it is fantastic! Good choice!

I have to go with New York - partly because I have not spent any time there, but mostly because I really, really love sushi. I get a little tired of avocado and cucumber rolls. :)

Cashews. Really. Somehow they haven't found their way into my diet. People love them. I'm afraid to try them for fear of going wild and not being able to stop. Ambrosia. Food of the gods. Scary.

I love what everyone said here. Health is an excellent reason, Christian. I'm so glad that doing what's right for our health is also what's the most kind and compassionate choice. For those who believe in God, it makes sense to respect all of creation and "all creatures great and small."

Petalia - I so feel you about violence! Though I was a dedicated and die-hard meat eater, I was an increasingly guilt-wracked one as my awareness grew about their suffering and fear.
Yes, too, about the privilege to make these choices. Thank you for your post!

Dev, same priorities here!

I agree with you on all of that. for me it was the animals first, environment, world hunger..this is a great time for vegans to live in, there are so many alternatives.

Nonviolence. I grew up eating vegan - vegetarian. Although I never heard the word 'vegan' back in those days, never an ant was squashed in our home. Now, I have a visceral reaction to having violence in or on me. I just can't and won't. I am so privileged to live in a place and time that allows me to have choices about these things. I can control what I eat, what I wear, and what I consume. All animals, including human animals (world hunger), and the health of our planet is why I am vegan. My own health doesn't matter to me nearly as much. No, my heath matters to me but it isn't important as to why I am an ethical vegan.

I'm hoping to get over there this year! It's wife and I celebrating 20 years together. I think we're looking at England with a touch of Scotland and missing Whales, though. I am afraid I might eat my way through vegan London.

And there IS a new poll - but it's in the "Spring '19 New Fitness Goal" thread. Ha!

NightGlow: I am indeed in Wales! I come here often. It is hard to eat a vegan diet here. I usually bring a big bag of dry goods with me. This year, I'm finding it easier. Still, I usually eat loads of fresh vegetables and fresh greens and almost never seitan based foodstuffs (which I'm finding here where vegan food is offered.) Leeks, potatoes, swedes (rutabagas), and cabbage is what is local and available at the green grocers. How to have fun with that? Fortunately, food isn't everything. The natural world here is EXTRAORDINARY!!!

P.S. I LOVE the leek girl singing and twirling a leek! Thank you!

I don't really celebrate it either, but it's lovely to see such creative costumes and coordinated dancing around the world. I love that people come together to make something beautiful happen and I know that some work on their costumes all year long.

Petalia, are you in Whales? Do you live there?

Leeks reminds me of the sweet video "Loituma Girl." The song is a part of a song from a Finnish group. I love her! Here it is:

In the part of the world where I am right now, we just finished celebrating St. David's Day. We've been eating a load of leeks and enjoying daffodils EVERYWHERE!

Shrove Tuesday is today. I guess that marks the end Mardi Gras this year. Did you feast on pancakes today NightGlow?

Laissez les bons temps rouler! What, if anything, will you do to celebrate Mardi Gras?

* I'll be dancing/partying in the streets!

* I'll eat a traditional food

* I'll think back fondly to that one time when I was in New Orleans/the Caribbean/Brasil

* Mardi what? I'm just ready for spring

Summer produce! Tomatoes, peaches, good watermelon -- I mean, all that stuff is available year-round, but the fresh summer stuff is the best.

I was going to say watermelons in February. But, eating tubers in winter is delicious and probably makes watermelon in summer all the more divine!

As long as I can eat fresh local produce all year round, and although where I live is not CA but nor is it the arctic, I'm all set and want for nothing. Foodwise. Everything-wise? I wish. I want to not want. Hmm . . .

The Impossible Burger is meat - made from plants! For a long time, it was only available in a few, very fancy restaurants in NY, LA and SF. It's spreading though. Along with Beyond Meat, it's the burgerest burger there is.

Here's a video about it:

Anejalena - I totally, totally hear you on that.

Have you read their description of events? It sounds like they didn't want to but were pressured to do so to make sure it was marketable as a new form of heme.

But, I hear PETA's side, too.

I am not happy about that, but am going for the aggregate reduction of harm. So very many meat-consumers are trying it and seem to have a big buzz about it. the slowly growing awareness that "meat" doesn't have to be a result of pain and suffering is frustrating but hopeful.

Now wait 'till we get into the discussion about lab meat!

*other .... Haven't decided how I feel about the testing they did to get FDA approval. Part of me is like necessary evil to get this product out to the masses and get more people on protein alternatives... other part of me is like it wasn't necessary to sell it but they wanted approval of the heme (not sure if I spelled that right) for better marketing(?)

The organic salad greens we get at Costco and a little homemade dressing.
Then some kind of onion,
then beans,
then tomatoes (don't always have them, but always have the previous items)
then a carb (rice...)
then a cooked veggie.

Petalia, shanghai cab are often times smaller than baby bok. They're milder, more tender and the ones available in my neck of woods are green from stem to leaves.

Making indian dahl with red lentils, curry, onions, garlic, ginger, tumeric, with a bit of lemon juice and stir in a bunch of spring greens at the end of cooking and pile that on some brown rice. emoticon

Turnip greens with bits of turnip in them. Also all the others except I don't like kale or collard greens. I don't care how healthy they are.

Love cabbage and bok choy!

Now I salivate for all greens!

PLANTSTRONG, I've had baby bok choy and bok choy, and choy sum, but not shanghai cabbage. Wait- just googled, is shanghai cabbage bok choy super small- smaller than baby bok choi? I would love to try that. I bet it is delicate and tender.

Nightglow, my favorites are shanghai cabbage, baby bok choy, long stem cabbage (mature bok choy) and choy sum... mostly in soups but good in stir fry too.
