I have a super easy refried bean recipe that I like. I pressure cook dry white beans (the small ones) until they're soft. While that's happening I saute 6-10 cloves of garlic in a good amount of olive oil... maybe 1.5 tbs until the garlic is brown and fragrant, but not burned. When the beans are done I drain, throw them in the food processor with some salt and the garlic and oil and pulse. Voila. It's good in tacos, burritos and quesadillas but also as a dip with veggies.

I want to thank *you*

I got some Kashi cereal for me and a partner, and we devoured it. So healthful and yummy. I had indeed forgotten.

My forgotten favorite is refried beans. So easy to use in a burrito, on top of salad, or just as a side when I feel like my meal doesn't have legumes or protein.

I should learn to make it from scratch, though. :)

I am so glad you're here, Sharon! It is a huge learning curve, and we want to be supportive.

We are here for everyone on the path, no matter where you are in trying to be vegan (or plant-based). I just wanted to be clear for the vegans among us which kinds of Kashi are not okay.

The original and a few other cereals have honey in them. Honey, being from bees, is not vegan.

For reference, here's some definitions:

"Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."
It is an ethos and a philosophy of living that believes in reducing and eliminating use of animals in all aspects of life.

Plant-based is about eating a diet that is all (or almost all) derived from plants.

So, someone (like Beyonce) may eat only plant products, but still wear leathers and furs.

Here at the Vegan, Plant-based Life, we are welcoming and encouraging of everyone and want to be inclusive. But many of us are vegan (including myself) so I try to be clear so that we can make the best decisions for our ways of life.

Hi there! I was listing the Kashi cereals that are vegan for those of us who are. Kashi Original Cereal isn't vegan!

Of course, if you are not vegan than please go ahead and enjoy it. :)

Thanks for reminding me about Kashi! Haven't had it in years. The Daily Meal rates several Kashi products as the most healthful cereals on the market!

For those of us who are vegan, some of the Kashi cereals are a no-go (they contain honey).

The Kashi cereals that vegans can eat include:

Kashi GO Peanut Butter Crunch
Kashi GO Maple Brown Sugar Flake and Clusters
Kashi GO Chocolate Crunch
Kashi GO Toasted Berry Crumble
Kashi GO Crisp Cinnamon Crumble
Kashi Cinnamon Harvest Whole Wheat Biscuits

Yeah interesting, when I lived in Italy I used to eat this bread called friselle. It was a wholegrain hard-baked bread made from barley and wheat. When I say hard-baked, they are dried to a crisp and before eating them you rehydrate the bread - usually looks like a bagel - by dunking it in water and then letting it sit for a minute. The first time I tried them I thought it was just weird but I grew to like them. Now I'm back home in Australia I can't get them :-(
