Hi, Sharon - Happy New Year to you, too! It seems like you guys have had quite the winter up there this year! I grew up in MN, so I can relate, but now I live in Georgia and, thankfully, we seldom get snow down here. It's not as pretty without snow, but I like not having to deal with it for walking or driving!

I also use a Fit Bit and have cranked it back up with the determination to continue to use it this year. I love it! I know it really works when I'm faithful to use it, and to stay on Sparkpeople...especially this team! I laughed when you said you have to figure out how to turn your WII on...my husband and I always have to call our married son to help get it going because we always forget, too! LOL Speaking of that, I really should get mine up and running - it adds a fun twist to exercise, doesn't it?!

Happy New Year!! I made it through the holidays with a few ups and downs and have managed to get back to 169 this AM!! Aiming for 1500 fitness minutes in January - exercise is my downfall and what a challenge with all the snow and cold here. I will fire up the treadmill and try to remember how to set up my WII today!!

Hi, everyone! I'm back and excited to see we have some new teammates - I'm looking forward to catching up on some posts and get to know you better! It's been crazy busy - as I'm sure it has been for everyone else, too, so not an excuse, I know!

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas!! I found this list of tips for the holidays on Heidi Powell's website and I thought they were so sensible and DOable that I wanted to post them - they could be very helpful over the next week!

Heidi Powell’s Top 10 Tips for Holiday Survival

1. Plan your meals ahead of time so when the holiday craziness sets in you’ll be prepared to make better choices.

2. Eat before you go to parties and gatherings, and take healthy foods. Not only will you have a non-diet busting option, but those with similar goals will thank you!

3. Eat breakfast. You’ll start your day out right and will be less tempted to overindulge on all those holiday goodies.

4. Pack your shopping cart with lots of fruits and veggies, and make sure you eat at least five servings every day. Make them easily accessible: keep fruit in a bowl on the counter, keep cut up veggies in the fridge, and take them with you wherever you go for a quick and healthy snack.

5. Move, move, move. Make time for exercise—at least five minutes—every day. Rev up your metabolism by exercising before and after holiday dinners so fewer of those holiday calories will find a final resting place! And remember, exercising is a great opportunity to spend quality, non-screen-involved time with family and friends, so involve them too!

6. Give neighbors and family non-food treats—they will probably thank you for this! Some ideas: a coupon for an act of service, an ornament, or other inexpensive items that will last longer than the holidays. Or if you must give treats, give something that can be enjoyed post-holidays like frozen cookie dough, mixes, and so on.

7. Stay hydrated to fight hunger and holiday fatigue by drinking half your body weight in ounces of water every day (150 pounds = 75 ounces of water).

8. Do enjoy your holiday favorites—in moderation. Often a few bites will satisfy that craving for those foods you’re so fond of, and honestly, a few bites won’t blow your weight loss goals!

9. Since many traditional holiday foods are loaded with calories, give your favorites a healthy tweak.

10. And last, but certainly not least, stay focused on your goals throughout the holidays. While you might not have total control over what foods you’re served, you always have control over what you choose to eat and do (exercise!). Be sure to keep your promises to yourself, and you’ll have a healthy and rewarding holiday season and an awesome start to the New Year!

Sharon - you are right, I am VERY active. That includes physically active, but also active eating! emoticon I can burn off what I eat, but I need to reduce what I eat and burn the calories to make significant progress.

Okay, off for a short 3 day vacation with my family. And, it will be active - swimming, gym, whirlpool, lots of walking.

Keep motivating me! I will get there!

If I can inspire you, then that will motivate me to not let go. It would be soooo very easy! Water aerobics is over till January 8 and it is too slick and cold to walk outside....I will be challenged to get in those 2 hours of activity. My goal is to get another 2 pounds off by January 8...I KNOW that you will do it - you are much more active than I am!!

I am not going to try and list all the details here - I log in all my food already -- so, I may just use the weekly progress report from Fitbit ... will think about it!

I have to say, I am a little envious, but I have no one to blame but myself for the lack of continued progress. I'm glad I have maintained most of my loss, but I had crossed the lost 40 pound mark and had to change my icon to the 30#.
I'll get there again.

Not keeping up with posting but weight is down - leaving 170-ville - 30 lbs. lost since starting SP 5 years ago - I regained but lost over 16# just since August. I have been here before, but this time I am determined to not only hold on to the loss, but get down to a healthier BMI!!

My goodness! I had no idea that I go so far behind here. I have been doing fairly well. Exercise in generally not a problem. My food is, at times, but that has been going pretty well too.
I need to get back here and record things.
You guys are a good prodding in that direction.

Hi Sharon, at the moment my only exercise is walking. I started off by just streaking a daily walk, and then I realised that weightwatchers suggest 50-60 minutes exercise a day for weighht loss. So I put myself on a 2 week personal challenge to stay within my ww points and do at least a 50 minute walk each day. It seems to be having a good effect on my weight loss!

Thank you lee-2014! Actually I'm even more impressed with the fact that I managed 4 pints of water 3 days in a row now. I kept tracking, and that kept it in my mind that I needed to do this, so I kept trying, and I eventually have succeeded! Woohoo! Before it was "water - yuk!" I think changing the 4 pint goal to just tracking what I did helped too. Took the "oh no I failed again" out of it.

Today is going to be an easy one as we are having a fasting and praying day.
No exercise though.
I had a run scheduled with a friend, and she bailed on me. I was basically going to go because she is just starting to run. It is for her encouragement, and it is really easy for me because I started the whole C25K program over with her, which is only running 1 minutes and walking for 90seconds and repeating that for 20 minutes. She rescheduled for tomorrow, so we will see if she follows through.

I think I will change the way I streak my water to just tracking water rather than trying to have atleast 2 pints else I'll never get anywhere with my streak! Atleast if I track my water it will keep me aware that I should be having 4 pints/day...

This is a very busy time of year isn't it? But I am determined to get into the 160's by the end of the year. It is now only 9 weeks so I am down to the wire here. I have been tracking food 91 days now but not staying within calorie range or exercising enough. So for Novermber I am committing to 20 minutes of exercise each day and aiming for 500 calorie deficit each day!

Lee - you are doing great! I am having a difficult time keeping up on here. So much going on in my life ministry wise that there hasn't been a lot of time to spend on the computer. I have been tracking, but since I got a smart phone, I generally track on my fitness pal. Their app is free, and works so well. Spark charges for theirs and it doesn't have raving reviews. I've lost almost 4 of the pounds I gained, so it is getting better, but again, it is recycled pounds....

CP - It was not really a vacation this time to the States. It was work related. We travelled over 6000 miles in 6 weeks, slept in 17 different beds, etc. Definitely not my idea of a vacation. We did get to see all of our children and grandblessings and I did a 5K while there as well as a 1/2 mile race with two of my grandblessings who are 2 and 4. The 2 year old ran the entire way!

I had gotten so far behind that this thread almost got lost again! I still have good intentions of posting my chart here....I will try to get to it by Saturday. Just know that I AM working hard - going to the gym 3 days a week, playing volleyball again, and lots of walking - as well as working on my diet.

Hi, everyone! I've really been out of the loop here, and I apologize for being MIA! It's great to read back a little and catch up on your posts.

Hillary - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I'm so excited and happy for you and Kirk getting engaged! It will be an exciting year to hear all about your wedding plans as they come together!

Oma - sounds like you had another trip to the states! Do you do that once a year? I'm glad you had a good time, and that you are back here getting back on track to remove your vacation pounds.

Lee - you have been doing fantastic! I'm happy you stuck it out, even when it got lonely here. You are a great example of consistency and determination and the results are really showing on your chart! Good job! You are an inspiration to me to do the same!

I restarted on Oct 1, but then we took a week-long trip to Branson for a family reunion with my 4 siblings. We came from all across the country - Alaska, Idaho, MN, IN and GA with our spouses and had a wonderful time - too much eating, of course, and in spite of that trip and this past weekend at a scrapbooking retreat, I've lost 1 pound so far. I hope to pick up the pace now that those two events are behind me.

Lee ~ Way to go! You are doing great! You've lost almost 8 pounds in under 50 days!

I have some exciting news to share with all of you! While Kirk and I were on our annual Labor Day vacation in Traverse City, MI we got engaged! We have not set a date yet but it will most likely be in Fall 2015!

The last 3 weeks have flown by since we returned. I was up about 6 pounds before we went on vacation and I'm up another 3 pounds this week from my monthly visitor. I'm going to work really hard these last 3 months of 2013 to get back under 190 pounds. I have about 15 pounds to lose. I figure if I can lose 5 pounds each month if I really try hard.

It is getting lonely here, hope you are all ok. I know Oma is on the road...

I have now tracked consistently for 49 days - probably a record for me.
Vacation earlier this month set me back and we are going for 10 days next week so my goal is to maintain or at the least not go back to 180!
I started water aerobics twice a week and I think that will help over time.

Day 30 and I am still back on track. I have found that I have to keep my calories around 1200 to lose weight. Part because I just don't get enough exercise...but also I think my metabolism is just slow. Anyway, I am eating what I want, just not as much, and I really am not hungry. Learning the difference between hunger and cravings!!

Hello! Day 27 and I have tracked every day. Weight stabilizing at 179. Signed up for water aerobics twice a week from September to November! Thinking about the FastDiet (5 days normal eating, 2 nonconsecutive days about 500-600 calories). Two vacations to contend with in September - hope to not gain when we are gone but that will be hard. emoticon

I am in the States. I haven't been tracking consistently. I did stop and buy some things that I should be eating rather than some things I had been eating. That will help.
I took my grandblessings "running" yesterday. One is 4 the other 2, so we didn't go very far. I did play at the park with them and went on everything that was there, all 3 slides, the swing, and even rolled down the hill with them. I can't imagine doing this a few years ago.
I am going for a "real" run this morning. Then we are on the road for 5+ hours.

Yes, those pounds are sneaky!! And it seems getting the same ones off over and over should get easier but it doesn't.

I am on day 14 of consistent tracking with only 2-3 days over calorie range. There is a 200 calorie difference in what SP things is my BMR and what Fitbit thinks.. Fitbit is lower and I tend to believe that is more accurate since Fitbit tracks my every move.

Whatever it is though, I have lost 4# this month. I know I was not going to weight but I just have to!!

We do have to be diligent with this, because the weight comes on so quickly, and we lose it so slowly!
But, we know what to do - so let's do it!
Nice that Kirk found something he enjoys. My DH likes biking as well. I go with him, but not the trails that he takes as they are too aggressive for me. But we do take some longer bike rides - around 10 miles.

These past few weeks have been busy, busy, busy! It seems like every time I turn around there is another party to be planned. We had a surprise 30th birthday party for Sam on August 3rd. It was a lot of fun and I think she was genuinely surprised. Now we are in the middle of planning my nephew's 2nd birthday party that is this Sunday. I can't believe he is going to be 2!

Last weekend Kirk and I went to visit my grandma. We took our bikes and on Saturday we went on the bike trail for almost 6 miles. Kirk went earlier in the day to the mountain bike trail and did 15 miles! He loves biking. I tried to watch my portions and we only ate out once while we were there but I still gained a pound. I was maintaining my weight there for awhile but now the pounds are starting to creep back on. It's time to get back to work!

I have continued to faithfully track - but I am really lacking on time to post it all here. I will try to check in now and then, but I leave in 10 days for the States and have 3 Bible studies this week, company from the States 2 days, babysit 2 days and a wedding cake to make as well as to attend on Saturday. So I am not going to take the time to make a chart, which means I won't make one until I come back in October....
I do plan to track and exercise though.

Yesterday I completed my 1st 10K - and weird as it is, I came in 3rd in my age group....however, I am thinking there must only be 3 that were in my age group! I haven't had time to look and I am not sure when they will post all that information in the internet anyway. Oh, and I won a bag of noodles. emoticon I guess the company must have been a sponsor.
My DH did a 24K bike ride. Both of these events were in the mountains, so at one point my DH had to carry his bike up 90+steps as this is actually only a hiking trail, not made for bikes! He said he couldn't count how many times he had to get off his bike because of how steep it was.
I ran a good 4K with a real good pace, but after that it was mostly uphill. Very challenging and I am feeling it in my backside today.
Okay, time to catch up on some things, but I wanted to check in and let you all know how I am doing and what is going on.
Oh, and I have lost .8 in the last week.

Well, I have had 10 days of track, and 8 days of staying within calorie range. Activity has been enough to show a calorie deficit each day. I sneaked a peek at my weight and I was down 2# but it doesn't feel like it!!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Our weather is perfect!! If it stayed this way all year our population would boom!!! emoticon

Lee - good job on your tracking and 5 days of great deficits! emoticon My goal is similar to yours... to get in my 500 calorie deficit faithfully all through August and see what a full month ON TRACK can do. I've had a solid three days now and going for a solid 30!

Oma - the fact that you are tracking and being accountable to yourself is a victory. Your 'overages' have been pretty small, and you can turn those numbers into deficits again - I've got confidence in you! emoticon

CP, that strawberry smoothie sounds great!.

Five days of tracking and although I didn't make the best healthy choices (Pepsi slushy and potato chips??) I still was within range and had a deficit. I am tracking my deficits via Fitbit fitness and SP reports...I should lose at least 1#/week as I have about 700 deficit each day. I hope I can keep it up till September because I am determined not to weigh in!!

I am not putting all my data here right now as I am trying to limit computer time.

Sitting here listening to my dog snore... guess it is time to go to bed! emoticon

Good morning!

Lee - Great job on your calories and deficits!!! Hope that headache goes away quickly!

I had a good day yesterday - the difference in how I FEEL, both physically and mentally when I'm tracking, exercising and filling in my charts is amazing. Mustering up self-discipline is sometimes such a challenge, but the results are so worth it! Yesterday, part of that discipline involved going out for a walk after dinner, when I wanted to just sit with Mark and watch TV...it was HOT and HUMID and the "old me" did NOT want to leave the A/C! But, in the process, I met one of my neighbors for the first time and saw a beautiful sunset! I came back sweaty, but energized.

My second victory was opting to make a strawberry 'shake' instead of having a fudgesicle to use up my remaining calories after I got back. I used 1/2 cup fresh strawberries and 1/2 cup skim milk and 1/2 cup ice cubes with a little stevia in my magic bullet. It whisked up into a very cold and refreshing treat for only 67 calories!

Oma - you are right, the STAYcation was more relaxing because there was no packing to do before or unpacking after and at the end, we didn't feel like we needed a day or two off to regroup! Even though you didn't get in the run you wanted, it sounds like you got plenty of other exercise!

I went to Water Aerobics yesterday which is always a lot of energy expended (lots of cool, refreshing fun, too), then then did a major trip to the commissary and spent the afternoon unloading the car and putting away the groceries so I got a LOT of steps and a good calorie burn for the day! I'm looking forward to my next '10 days' - putting in a better, more consistent effort and having more results to show for it. I got what I put in this last 10 days...0!

Hillary - We want to get a rack for our car as well. My DH loves to bike. I would love to take a biking vacation. They do that kind of thing here. The only thing is, we need some time to do that.

Lee - sounds like you are going to have a successful August. I am determined to work harder. I still struggle so much with staying in my range for food.

CP - your Staycation sounds lovely. Sometimes those are more restful than going away.

I was going to go running today, but I woke up later than I planned and it was already 90 out. I told my DH I was a fair weather runner. He said, "yeah, you prefer to run in the rain." That is true. I just don't tolerate the heat that well.
I also had to clean at church and at the building that we are janitor for. I pulled weeds and the sweat was just a pouring off me! emoticon
I did walk there and back, so that also gave me a little over 40 minutes of exercise. I am also going to be walking my friend's dog later so there will be a mile or more to add to today's totals.

I am going to put my charts by month instead. So this one will be for August.

Hi, all!

Lee - it's great to see you back! Good job on getting back on track - I know what you mean...with all the technology we have now-a-days with our phone apps and such, tracking is easier than ever, yet, it's still seems hard to get to it sometimes. And you are right...when we DO it, we see results, and when we don't do it, we can go up quite quickly. I know it is the habit I need to work on the most because it's the KEY to success!

Hillary - how fun - new rollerblades! I love seeing people glide by on those - it looks like it would be so much fun! But, I'm afraid I'd fall and break something at my age and put myself completely out of commission! And the new bike rack and taking bikes to the campground sounds wonderful, too! I love that you and Kirk have turned your 'scare' into something good by working together on healthier eating and exercise - that's awesome!

Oma - glad you are back from your trip and turning things around so quickly to shed the weight you gained. I like your plan for your upcoming trip - that will be a long one - where are you going on that one? And, then, it will almost be the holidays!

As for me, I've just been busy and sloppy as you can see by my chart below! Last weekend, Mark and I had our 36th anniversary weekend...and, since he is on the gov't furlough and paychecks have been reduced, we decided not to go away to a cabin in N. GA as we usually do. Instead, we decided to make our HOME our 'cabin' for the weekend and have a STAYcation. We did NO work around the house and, instead, went to a flea market, an antique store, out for Mexican one day, grilled steaks at home another day and brought home some ribs/chicken another day, rented several movies and took the boat to the lake a couple times. It was a great weekend! I have no other excuses except just to say I've had trouble getting myself to take the time to put my food in the tracker which equates to pure laziness and procrastination! On a positive note, I have gone to water aerobics 3 times this week and taken several walks. My weight this morning was 186.5 and I have today left to be 'good' before my 10 day weigh-in tomorrow morning.

Yesterday was not a good day. I had thought we were going to the park and having Subway for dinner. I had a dentist appointment right after work and didn't get home until past 5:30 pm. Kirk was sore after a hard day at work and wasn't up to going to the park or rollerblading. He said we could still get Subway but I said no. Instead we had calzones from Hungry Howies. Bad idea as it was 1000 calories! We didn't eat until 8 so I was starving and ate the whole thing. I would have been okay still but I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for bed. I did stay busy the whole night between making Jello shots for Sam's surprise birthday party tomorrow and helping Kirk install a hitch kit on my car. I am so excited for vacation this year! We bought a bike rack for my car and are getting bikes to take with us this year. As well as taking our rollerblades. This will be one active vacation!

Oma - It really does help when we do this together. I remember years ago when we worked together and we both got down to our lowest weight in years. I know if we both stick with it we can get there again!

I know with my recent health scare, that both of our lives have changed for the better. I think it made Kirk realize that as much as I work out and try to eat good, things can still happen. With the way he eats and the little amount of exercise that he gets, I think it really scared him.

We didn't go rollerblading last night because my back was hurting me pretty bad. I probably should not have went on Monday night but I didn't want to let Kirk down. Tonight we may go to Maybury Park for a walk/hike if our friend does not come over to help us patch our ceiling. If we go to the park we will be getting Subway for dinner. If not I have chicken out and we will go rollerblading. Either way I have a plan!

I've been wanting to buy a pair of rollerblades for a few years now. On Saturday Kirk surprised me and bought us both a pair! We had a fun weekend trying to relearn how to skate! Exercise wise I had a good weekend. We went rollerblading on Saturday and twice on Sunday. Food wise not so good. We went out to dinner both days. The good news is Kirk wants to start eating better and cut down on eating out. We went grocery shopping last night and stocked up on healthier foods. Kirk wants to get a bike and start biking as well.

Hi All - I tracked most of July and lost weight but skipped tracking the past 4 days and you know what happened!! And tracking is so easy now on my phone!

Hillary - I am so glad your blood work was ok! Keep up the good work with your exercise!
Oma - glad you are back, I missed you.

We are having great weather this week, low 80's and sunny. We are getting some outside work done and I am decluttering almost every day!! I got all my paperwork under control, shredding a little each day.

Here is a tip if you have a lot of mosquitos -- the little pests like to congregate on the corner of our deck where it meets the house - I don't like to use chemicals so I tried spraying white vinegar as I read about it on the web but that didn't work. Today I sprayed the brick and vinyl with 1/2 strength Simple Green soap - didn't rinse it off -- it has been several hours now and they are still gone!

It is so hard to not gain weight while on vacation! I think there were 2 times in the last few years that I actually lost weight while on vacation. I made sure I was very active while on vacation and limited eating out. I can't wait for our annual camping trip Labor Day weekend!

Hillary - what a relief! Glad there was good news there.

I have been faithfully logging my food and exercising. I gained weight during vacation - an all time high for the year! Ugggg.
However, since I have been home I have already lost most of what I gained - which was over 4 pounds. This is typical for me when I travel, and since I will be travelling from Aug 21-Oct 5 I am working on a plan to stick to plan when on the road and away. We eat out so much during travel, and are in other's homes. I am planning to make up packages of oatmeal with protein powder, etc that I can take with me and hopefully people won't be offended that I don't eat the food they are making. The other part of the plan is that I eat only 1 dessert a week - on a Sunday. As far as eating out, I know how to make good choices - so there is no excuse there.

My blood work came back normal except for my protein levels were high again. The doctor does not seem to be worried. He explained it might be an underlying infection. I did recently have dental work and that might be all that it was. I will go back in 6 months to have blood work done again. It is definitely a relief. Thank you all for your kind words and prayers!

Yesterday Kirk wanted to take me to Maybury State Park for a hike/walk. The park isn't far from us but yet we just started going in the last 2 weeks. We've been going on Sunday mornings but might start going one night a week as well. It's really nice to get outside and spend some time together. I made the suggestion to get Subway for dinner and eat at the park. I had a 6" turkey sub on wheat, apple slices and a green tea. We had a nice 2-mile walk.

After my appointment today we didn't have enough time to go out to lunch before I had to be to work. I mentioned to Kirk that I didn't want to go out to eat again. He suggested a fire. I could definitely use a beer after these last two weeks! lol

CP ~ 3 pounds is fantastic! You put in a good effort!

Oma ~ A trip to France sounds amazing right now! I've always wanted to go. It is definitely on my bucket list.

Hillary - I'm thinking of you this morning as you go to get your results and trust you will get a good report from the doctor on your bloodwork. I know all that eating out is challenging - but good job for getting out for a run and doing some hiking with Kirk, too...that's a good way to balance it out!

Oma - welcome back! Sounds like you had a very nice trip - any extra you gained will come right back off now that you are back on track!

Well...I just reached my 10 day weigh-in at 187 for a 3 pound loss. I don't really feel I deserve it for the rough and sloppy 10 days on my chart...but, maybe just the fact that I at least wrote down the good and the bad days kept me from really blowing it! But, I know I can do so MUCH better, and that's what I plan to do on the next 10 days! Needless to say, I'm still THRILLED with the result!

I got off track over the weekend. Kirk has been taking me out to dinners and movies. I know he means well and is just trying to keep my mind off things. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning to find out the results of my most recent blood work. Kirk says he wants to take me out to dinner to celebrate good news. Sam is going to my appointment with me and wants to take me to lunch! I know they mean well but I need to lose some weight!

Last night I decided to go out for a run. I mapped out a 1-mile route and set out to run as long as I could. I made the mistake of having a smoothie before I set out. I had to walk a few times but I did manage to finish in less than 15 minutes.

Tonight after work Kirk is taking me to Maybury Park for a hike. We have gone the last two Sundays and I really enjoy getting outside.

Hello all!
Having a hard time catching up on spark after being gone a week. We were in France, and took a couple days to visit Normandy. We had a great time, but all the sitting and eating were obviously not helpful for my diet. I did go running twice and worked out in the weight room once - and did some walking.
I am back to tracking and hoping to undo some of the damage.
I'll try to catch up more later.
