Willam, thank you.

I just read your post and cracked up and laughed until I had tears in my eyes.

Even with the dance, even if the owner was worth seeing in his underwear, 5 bucks is still too much. Any decent gay bar has young, muscular, delicious (sorry, I got carried away) young men dancing on g-strings and the tip is just a dollar...

Pen,

You know that the proprietor wouldn't be anything we'd want to see in their underwear!

Unless there was a free show.....like the owner dancing in his/her underwear. I mean, that might be worth five bucks. emoticon

Loving the visual I got when Willam suggested they might be holding customers upside down to shake the looker's fee out of their pockets! Good question..how would they charge them? In any case, obviously no rational person would consider window shopping worth five bucks..

I don't know what their taxing situation is. Is it the same as here. Tax on purchases from businesses within the state of purchase?

It's only a matter of time before sales tax will be charged on all purchases.

When that happens, brick and mortar business will have a more equal playing field.

Assuming that this is not a joke (it sure looks and sounds like it) I think the solution is quite simple, just do not go to the stores charging.

There isn't much that can be done against online shopping (I do most of my shopping online) but good service would be a differential.

I wonder... How are they charging the "just looking" costumers? Shaking them upside down till some money comes out?

A shop in Brisbane, Australia, has started charging people a $5 looking fee if they just want to browse.

"As of the first of February," reads a sign posted on the door, "this store will be charging people a $5 fee per person for 'just looking.' The $5 fee will be deducted when goods are purchased."

------

I don't think this will go as well as they think. I certainly wouldn't go into a store that charged me just for looking.

Apparently, they fear people are going to their store to look at items, then going home and buying them on line.

There has to be a better way to deal with that, though. Offer products not found on line? Price matching? Superior service?

If I were an entrepreneur in Brisbane with a specialty food store, I'd immediately add a huge gluten free section and prominently advertise NO BROWSING FEE.
