I don't get it. I've seen countless babies with pierced ears; never heard it as a controversy.

People tend to point the finger vs. giving their own lives an introspective review and fixing what they can actually control. It seems easier to paint someone as a bad mom, or person vs. taking responsibility for one's own life. Think the ones complaining have it all together?

Diamonds ... hmmm! Brilliant diamonds are indeed a real beauty. And I have a beautiful one. But I tend to be more driven by relationship, experiences, and beauty vs. things.

Pops, your wife must be like me..I wear a pair of very simple pierced earrings and my wedding and engagement rings..that's it. Not fond of jewelry. Only wear the stuff I wear due to sentiment and symbolism.

Willam, you can put this on your list of "Exceptional Exceptions". Her birthstone, a pretty but inexpensive stone, didn't work - back it went. A Ruby heart for Mothers day didn't work - back for a refund. Finally a diamond bracelet for her birthday didn't work.

As much as I would like to buy her jewelry, I can't do it.

Poeye, when in doubt about a gift for a woman (and some men) just buy diamonds. You cannot go wrong with diamonds (Not Ziamond, not tiamond, buy the real thing).

On the male side of my family, there were no girl babies born for three generation in a row. Both of my sons have daughters.

My oldest granddaughter had her ears pierced when she was eight. The girls and ladies in my wife's family don't do pierced ears, so she really didn't care for the ear piercing, but she said absolutely nothing negative about the piercing to my son, DIL or granddaughter.

I thought it was cool because it just made it easier to buy her gifts. I've never been able to pick out a gift a lady would want. After being married four years, I went to my wife and confessed disability. She has now been my shopper for female gifts for 38 years - and she tells me what I got her for her birthday & Christmas. She consults with me on our anniversary.

What I think I want to get for her is always more expensive than she wants us to spend.

Hey, even boys go through a period when it's cool to have an earring. My two sons did when they were in high school. They quit wearing a ring in their ear when they started college and haven't worn one since.

Willam, I agree with you 100%. I personally think that most sets of earrings that ladies wear are attractive and, OK, sexy.

Penny, if they did they'd be too busy volunteering at Head Start, or WIC, or in the Public Schools as reading coaches, or at vaccine clinics, or well baby clinics, or rocking AIDS babies, or providing foster care, or working at a community food coop to feed the hungry to be sticking their nose into the harmless choices of other parents. Maybe they would even be raising their own children sensibly so they can become the kind of adults who take care of themselves and others. Who knows?

Yes, MYOB indeed....These woman have entirely too much time to blog about benign parental discretion. It is a cultural thing and these stupid "mommy wars" make no sense at all. Do you think they care as much about starving, neglected or abused children?

All the women in my family for generations have had their ears pierced either as infants or as children. Infants don't handle the ear lobes or increase chance of infection as older kids do, and Moms can properly tend to the piercing until it heals well without grubby little fingers. Let's face it Willam, some people just have too darned much time on their hands . It's my theory that sticking their noses into other people's business and trying to "fix" them distracts judgmental folks from the need to deal with their own considerable issues. MYOB should be a creed.

Really? All the idiocy that people practice on their children and they're whining about some pinpricks in the baby's ears?

It's certainly no worse than infant circumcision, which is widely practiced. The only problem I can really see is that the parents would have to be a little extra vigilant about the earrings falling out and being swallowed.

People have entirely too much time on their hands. If everyone just went home and minded their own business we'd be a lot better off.

Piercing a baby girl's ear is popular across the cultural spectrum. It may be more prominent in Latin American countries but it's done by Anglo-Americans too.

People, people, people. Get over yourselves.

It has always fascinated me (and it still does) how in America people protest and contest EVERYTHING, and sometimes it is about really silly stuff.

So, Gisele Bundchen (the Brazilian Top Model, the best paid in the world), took a picture of her 8 month old daughter wearing earrings.... There, the commotion is caused and the pic is being discussed everywhere....

To protest something it is necessary to have at least a bit of knowledge about the subject. and having a daughters ears pierced is a cultural trait in Brazil.

In fact, when my daughters were born, for a small fee (higher is the hospital provided the earrings) you could take you 2-3 day old baby girl home already with earrings. I do not know if they still do this, but I do know that baby girls in Brazil are expect to show off earrings as soon as possible.

It is just a cultural costume, and I really do not think it should raise any kind of discussion...
