William, the point being discussed is whether he leveraged it for his campaign or not. His race was very much an issue whether people choose to acknowledge it or not and whether he intended it or not. Some voted for him solely because he is black; some did not vote for him solely because he is black.

It was a VERY historic day in America to elect our first black president. The 60s in America really is not that long ago and it was a VERY DIFFERENT time for racial tensions and rights (or lack of rights). I grew up watching America change in regards to civil rights. This is a sign that welcomed people to the town I was born in (my family moved from there when I was one) farm3.staticflickr.com/2254/2

The City defended it as referring to "rich fertile soil and pure of heart people" ... but the message was pretty clear during that time.

I don't agree with most of O's policies, but I believe his election was a powerful statement of how far we have come; the fallout a reminder of how far we still have to go.

Running on a "black platform" means that the candidate uses the fact that he/she is black to promote issues primarily of concern to the "black" community. Obama didn't do anything of the kind.

Obama had plenty of qualifications. Just because he didn't run a company or a state doesn't disqualify him from making a good President.

I really do not understand why race is so important in the US. It is really not the first thing I think of a person (not the second or third either).

The guy went to Harvard! He was not qualified? really?

People, get over it. the president IS black. And honestly? it does not mean a thing to me.

"Obama also didn't run on a black platform, you know?"

Actually he did whether he intended to or not. One can't be the 'first' anything and not have that become a major issue in a national, or even world platform, like the POTUS election is.

"Had other qualifications for the job."

Actually he didn't really. He had very little real world leadership experience. He had charism and promised change at a time when people were desperate for change. He ran a brilliant campaign and used social media to his advantage. He also ran against the party that was falling apart.

ITA re Jesse Jackson..Also ITA about the fact that Obama is mixed race and obviously black..just as my grandchildren are mixed race and Asian. Obama never pretended to be anything else. They don't either. Obama also didn't run on a black platform, you know? Had other qualifications for the job..

Ally, I think the problem is that people are very little concerned with coherence, with not plainly and blatantly lying. There is no Challenge regarding Obama being black. Is he a mixed race person? Yes, he is. Can one put him in any other racial group other than black? Not if the person has a minimum of shame.

I am familiar with the one drop rule, but in this case, it is more like one bucket rule.

and BTW, J Jackson is an idiotic media whore.

William, that is one of the challenges that blacks face in the US. They're too black, or not black enough. J Jackson, and some others, didn't think O was black enough. Are you familiar with the "one drop rule" ... it's a part of our crazy past. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-dro

and then listen to this song by Cher (highlights more racial problems) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6E98

People fight over religion, they fight over race, money, etc. ... some people are always looking for a reason to fight.

Funny, I live here and haven't heard a thing about this. Considering what I do know about the Houston election is that turnout was at record lows and until the vote count is broken down by race there is no real way to know. Even the candidate admitted that it may just be because of problems at HCC.

OK. I will be back to this one, but come one? Obama "Claimed" to be black? AM I going blind? Is he Asian? Latin? Caucasian? Last time I saw him on TV he looked quite black to me.

I was originally kind of put off that another politician had gotten elected deviously, but then I clicked to the actual news story. Then I fell out of my chair in hysterical laughter.

After reading the article, it appears Mr. Wilson was very careful to NOT SAY he was black. Would a reasonable person see the political bombardment and THINK he was black? Not if you bothered to even look at Mr. Wilson's picture, which was curiously absent from his low, LOW profile during the election season..

Am I surprised at a stunt like this?

Of course not. It worked for President Obama when he threw his mother under the bus and claimed he was black. Of course, we all KNOW the truth that he is half black and half white but that he played the race card to the hilt in both of his elections - hinting that if you didn't vote for him you were a hate mongering racist.

I recall certain blacks that claimed that President Clinton "was the first Black President" Mr. Wilson certainly has the same racial qualifications as cigar smoking Bill. And when you look at the facts, President Obama was only 50% more black than Obama.

Back to the original story. Nope, I was just someone who read his qualifications and couldn't believe this guy could be President with no knowledge of Foreign Relations, no knowledge of the Justice system, a blindness towards service veterans and without a clue how business operated.

Nope, not surprised at all, just ROTFLMAF that a white guy could pull something like this off. WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE HOUSTON VOTERS?

By the way, I am an Officially Adopted Texan (I have the proclamation in my genealogy file) and lived in the Houston area (Alief, Missouri City, Sugarland) for many happy years. It was a wonderful learning experience. I visited many historical sights.

I first heard the phrase "June teenth" and learned what it meant. I heard that watermelon and Orange pop was an ethnic combination. Even then, Houston politics were outrageously ridiculous and contentious and if you took them seriously, your brain would shrivel.

Pardon me for exiting. I have to go back and read the article again. I can feel my endorphins getting lower.

White guy runs for election, misleads Houston voters to think he is black; wins the election ousting the black guy who held the position for 24 years.

I'm surprised there is not a bigger uproar; and I'm surprised he admitted he used photos that he does not hold the copyright for. But it does highlight the lack of ethics prevalent in politics!

What do you think?
