That's weird...I guess Fox doesn't want to seem like they are criticizing one of their own. emoticon

Sarah Palin says that "free speech is an endangered species".

Greta Van Sustern had to explain to her that Phil Robertson's comments were not about free speech......

Talk about publicity stunts...that Palin never misses a chance to put herself into the limelight.

All of this Robertson quack up just goes to show that you can educate a duck but you can't make it think.

Phil Robertson has made a habit of making offensive and controversial remarks.

If Phil Robertson is an example of a good Christian then I'm perfectly happy to claim not to be a Christian at all.

Same goes for a "conservative."

I posted this on the "Freedom of Speech" thread about the woman who tweeted the racists comments on her way to Africa. It applies here very well........

You know what free speech is really about? Responsibility....not just a right. You can think anything you want...even share it among those who have the same arrested sense of appropriate behavior. But the minute you make it public, you face the consequences. That's just the right to be STUPID.

Something the Duck Dynasty clan has been finding out.

Popeye, do not even start talking about freedom of speech. Phil can say whatever he wants. This is freedom of speech. But freedom of speech does not protect him against facing the consequences of what he says. Lets stop playing this game ok?
And since we are at it. Yes, he is entitled to his religious believes (independent of how pathetic they are), but his religious believes do not give him a pass to discriminate people. Discrimination is discrimination indifferently of in what it is based.
So, lets get real.
I have my believes too you know? But I also have common sense, and I do respect the right other people have to be different from me. I think that the Bible is a fiction book (badly written) and that Jesus as a Lord is as good as Buda, Allah, fairies or Ra. But I do not go around telling people how ridiculous I think they are. It is their choice to give money to a multimillionaire pastor that promises something that he will never have to deliver.
So, if whites folks suffer the same as any other racial group, tell me why is it that Ethan Couch got probation after killing 4 people while driving drunk while the same judge, a few months earlier, send a poor black boy to jail for punching a man that fell and ended up dying?
No Popeye, a white, Christian male in the US is not under any risk whatsoever even if you try really hard to make it seem so. The same way that there is no war on Christmas and there is no attack to Christianity. What happens is that we are a (much) more diverse country and you white Christian folks want to keep things as they were 200 years ago. Sorry, too late.

Willam - I'm not sure exactly what the right wing nuts are all for. Are they all for freedom of speech for old Phil? Or are they for Phil for saying out loud what he believes? Since I'm not positive about that which you speak, I don't want to aggravate anyone by going off on my own beliefs.

Yes, Willam, I have gone to places where I thought there was more than a 50% that I would be attacked, been beaten up, knifed or shot. Was it a segregation issue or a racial issue? Maybe if you stretched it far enough. What caused the fear was a numbers issue. The numbers being how many white people had entered a neighborhood and had been assaulted. There are places in Kansas City that even a white policeman, with both a handgun and a shotgun, doesn't want to go unless he has a partner of the same race as the neighborhood. There are also ethnic neighborhoods where two officers of the same ethnicity as the neighborhood won't go unless they have enough back-up to be able to accomplish whatever mission they intended.

Is it racist because the white officer is afraid, or is it racist because the members of that particular community have put that fear there? It would be the second case, I'd say.

I've lived in neighborhoods where white people have been killed - by other white people. I've never lived in a neighborhood where white people have killed black people, or any people of color for that matter, just because they "were in the neighborhood".

The majority of the cries of racism are directed towards white people by people of any color. And if that white person is Christian, the vehemence doubles or triples or quadruples. It's been my experience that each race or ethnic group has more than they want of bigots, racists, haters of all sorts.

They are probably as embarrassed by them as I am when some supposed "Christian" opens his/her mouth and blurts out something stupid that is usually not even the remotest thing to being Christian-like.

It's in the past, but when Jim and Tammy Baker were so wildly popular and successful with their television evangelism, I could mentally smell something putrid and wrong. I didn't have any special knowledge, but the smell of incense was overpowering, and it was the overarching use of incense - to cover up a particularly bad smell. I didn't go out and shout against them, but if anyone asked my opinion, I told them flat out what I thought. It turned out my. It turned out that my, .....what? My psychic sense of smell was correct.

Was I or am I happy that I was right? Not really. Their actions turned out to be the opposite of what a "good" Christian would do. It made all Christians look ridiculous and stupid by association.

Bridie, a master degree does not mean what people think. I had colleagues on the PhD program that although they learnt the technical knowledge, they id not become a better or wiser person.
BTW Bridie, can you picture ME watching a show with people with those beards? Yeah, neither can I.
Popeye, although your impression was that the blacks in your city were fine, the point is, Have you ever been afraid of going to a place because you knew the chances of be beating up were very high? I have. In fact, I watch for this every single day. This Popeye, is segregation.

I think that the Company did what was needed to try not be hit by what the guy said. But eventually things are going to cool off and the idiot will back to the show. Well, if the right wing nuts shut up, because I do not know if you guys have been following this, but the right wing nuts are all for it.

Very, very true.

I'm a bit surprised that the folks in charge blinked, though.

"Reality shows" are relatively cheap to shoot and produce, and this one has gushed gold since it started. I watched a couple of episodes over the last couple of years and thought the best I could say of it was, "Poor white trash does slapstick".

Maybe that was what he saw in the fields of the south if his family was doing the same type of labor. Employment improvements in the South lagged far, far behind states outside of the South. It could be they were all just happy to have a job of any kind.

I'm a shade older than he is, but I grew up in Southern California about 5 miles from Compton and 8 miles from Watts.

Our community was segregated in it's own way. Lockheed was a major employer and the school district had a large number of Asians. We also had a large group of Mexicans whose families had lived in California longer than my family could claim. There was only about 10 blacks in my school year and there were comparative numbers in the classes ahead and the classes behind.

There were two blacks in my AP/College Prep classes. They were bright, they asked the teacher questions in a way that made everyone laugh, and their biggest talent as far as the rest of the class was concerned, was when the teacher announced a Pop Quiz. They were able to ask the teacher about questions in Chemistry and Physics in minute detail, allowing those of us who might not have studied enough to do a flash review before the quiz.

I know I would have received a B if it wasn't for them.

From what I "saw" in those days, there didn't seem to be the problems with race relations that they had in the South. When Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne into Georgia, I couldn't believe what was happening. I think our Civics teacher was in 7th heaven because of how interested we were.

Like everyone else, especially young people, I had a "It couldn't happen here" attitude, because I couldn't see what was happening in neighborhoods around ours. Television and print news didn't say much of anything at all about race relations in L.A. county.

Bridie, I certainly wouldn't argue with your take on this one.

"A government big enough to give everything you want is also big enough to take everything you have."

Dude has a BA, and also a Masters degree..not as dumb as he looks. Also, from his book, it seemed clear he didn't favor the show in the first place. My guess? He wanted out..done this way, tremendous sympathy gleaned from their core audience over the "unfairness" of this might make the audiences stay with the show out of loyalty despite the absence of the most popular character..himself. I don't watch it, won't watch it, and don't care in the least about any of it. All the first amendment posturing about it online is ignorant..the amendment allows one freedom of speech without being jailed, etc.. but not freedom from consequences. Bosses don't have to put up with employee speech that is detrimental to their business.
