Every couple of years a panel is appointed by the current Governor that use their personal "beliefs" to try to dictate to textbook publishers about the content of books that not only are used to teach Texas students but students across the country.

Even if the boards of other states don't agree with public teaching of creationism or minimalizing slavery they are subjected to decisions made in Texas because Texas is the largest market for texts.

I never realized how much public education and history was a victim of the current political climate.

And religious conservatives would like you to believe that The Bible as the teaching of God wasn't influence by the humans that wrote it.

"The 15-member education board approves textbooks for school districts to use, but objections raised by reviewers can influence its decisions. The volunteer review panels are often dominated by social conservatives who want more skepticism about evolution included in science textbooks, arguing that a higher power helped create the universe.
Among the changes approved Friday was a mandate that teachers or professors be given priority for serving on the textbook review panels for subjects in their areas of expertise. They also enable the board to appoint outside experts to check objections raised by review panels and ensure they are based on fact, not ideology.
The vote was a positive step, but "we'd like to see even stronger protections against political meddling," said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, a watchdog group that keeps tabs on the education board."It's way past time to stop (board) members and activists with an ax to grind from manipulating this process and politicizing our students' textbooks," she said."
Amazing! Excellent!

To think, asking actual teachers and subject-matter-experts about the contents of textbooks instead of politicians and activists! What a concept.

Now, to see if they actually follow through!
