Life is not about how to avoid getting knocked down; itís about when you get knocked down, finding a way to get back up.

"If youíre going to be able to look back on something and laugh about it, you might as well laugh about it now."

Laughter is one of the pure joys of being alive. Itís something so simple, yet it has such a positive effect on us. Itís also extremely easy. Think you canít find anything funny going on in your life? Think again. Life is filled with funny situations, but all too many times we take others and ourselves too seriously to find the humor. Feel free to laugh at yourself, even if you do something that normally calls for embarrassment. Itís only an embarrassing moment if you let it become one. Say you trip and fall while walking down the street. Most of us would blush and continue walking with our head down. Why? Whatís wrong with a good chuckle, even if itís at your own expense? When you learn to find the humor in daily situations, it could help decrease anxiety and even help out with stress. Now go out and do something silly. It could be the best laugh you have all day.

"when elephants fight, it's the grass that suffers."

Stop and look around you. Are you able to see that your actions affect those around you? Sometimes, it can influence and impact others in a big way. Look and see who is watching your example. Consider how your deeds have repercussions. Think that your argument with your spouse did not influence others? Wrong. Your kids could see this as an example of how to interact with others. A less obvious ramification could come at work or talking to friends, as you might be inclined to act angry towards them as well, although perhaps unintentionally. Also, this doesnít even have to involve fighting. What sort of example are you setting for others with your exercise or nutrition habits? Think about who is watching you.

"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can."

Admittedly, this seems like a daunting task to accomplish. You would have to have the energy and the patience of a super human to act like this every day, all day. But why not try? Easier said then done, but certainly worth the effort. Why wouldnít you want to be the best person you can be? Sure, weíll all have moments, even days where we are far from perfect, but isnít that part of being human? A better way to look at it might be to just put as much effort into being kind to as many people as you possibly can. You wonít touch the lives of everybody, but if you make just one difference, it will all be worthwhile.

"There are two kinds of man, one who makes history and one who endures it."

History is written all around you every day. It may not be history that makes the college textbooks, but itís your history just the same. Do you make your own history? Or do you endure the life that others make for you? When you choose a direction and dedicate yourself to it, you make history. When you listen to naysayers who convince you that it canít be done, you endure history. When you set your priorities and stick to them, you make history. When you get distracted by things that you find useless, you endure it. When you decide to have a good day, you create a life you want. When you allow outside forces to dictate your mood, you get the life thatís given to you. There are so many different possible histories out there, waiting to be lived. Whatever your life has been up to this point doesnít matter. What counts is the history that awaits you in the future. Which do you choose?

"Silence is often misinterpreted but never miss quoted."

Sometimes holding your tongue can have benefits, such as avoiding hurt feelings or an unnecessary argument. Other times, however, silence can be a negative thing. Donít just stand by and be a passive observer of something that you donít agree with. It is important to speak up and let your voice be heard. If you say nothing, people will either think that you agree with what is going on, or that you are too scared to speak out. They will, however, remember that you were silent on something that mattered. So, donít be afraid to let others know what you think. They may or may not agree, but all involved will become better educated after having heard other sides to the argument.

"What a man accomplishes in a day depends upon the way in which he approaches his tasks."

Do you go to work each day grudgingly, or do you approach things with a cheerful attitude and view them as challenges? This distinction can really make a difference. Youíll waste more energy complaining about or dreading something than if you were to just go ahead and get it done. Youíll make better use of your time, as well, by just going for it. Are there days when you sit at work or somewhere else just looking at the clock, the minutes creeping by? This could be because you are avoiding your work and donít really want to put in the effort. But on days when you bury your head in your work, accomplishing a lot, it might seem like time just flew by. So have the right attitude. Whistle while you work.

" Inventories can be managed, but people must be led."

The key to being a good leader is inclusiveness. You have to make other people feel as if they have made a difference, made some valuable contribution to whatever project it is that you are laboring on. This helps to give their effort meaning. Nobody wants to work if they donít feel as if they are being appreciated. Providing constructive and encouraging feedback to people gives them room for improvement. Be a positive force. Be hands on. Inspire those that you lead.

"Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them. They make the impossible happen."

When you are a leader, there is a lot asked from you. It might be putting in extra hours to a project, keeping the team together, making a last minute decision; the list goes on and on. These are not special cases; these are requirements. Sometimes itís hard to understand what itís really like to be a leader until you are on, so be prepared for a ton of work. But being a leader also has its benefits. You can make a difference, not only with the project you are working on but also with the rest of your team. You can help them, on the project and in life. And no matter what happens, it comes down to how you handle everything. This thought can be intimidating, but think about the feeling you will get after a job well done. So remember if want to become a leader, there is high risk but also high reward.

ďEach of us has his own special gift and you know this was meant to be true. And if you don't under estimate me, I won't under estimate you."

Hereís a leadership secret thatís often overlooked: leaders put others in situations where they can put their strengths to good use. They see the value in other people and build on that contribution. Potential help for you and your goals can come from practically anywhere. So keep your eyes, ears and mind open. You can learn something from each person you meet every day. Donít underestimate anyoneís skills or what they might be able to teach you. Your bus driver may have a story that can make you see a problem in a new light. The kids down the street might show you a thing or two about living with energy and joy. Your spouse may have a quality that you should think about improving in yourself. That odd co-worker down the hall may know more about your favorite hobby than you realized. How do you tap into these riches? Talk. Ask. Listen. And learn.

"If you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm."

Itís always great to have a person to rely on in a time of need. However, there are times when only your own initiative will do the trick. Good things have to start somewhere, so why not be the good you want to see in the world? It doesnít have to be large, world-altering projects; start small. Youíll find that the work you do might just motivate others to join you. Your leadership may very well inspire and spark the enthusiasm of those that see your effort, whether at home, at work, or in some organization. Have a big project looming ahead at your job, but nobody seems to want to tackle it? Go ahead and get a jumpstart on it; others will follow.

Inspiring people are vitamins for our spirits. They come in all kinds of disguises and descriptions. If you open your heart to being inspired, they will appear.

Do you take a daily vitamin? Even if you donít, you have probably heard about the potential benefits that vitamins provide. Most of us know how to nourish our bodies, vitamins being one of these waysÖbut do you know how to nourish your spirit? One recommendation is to open your heart and let inspiration happen. During life, we all build brick walls around our soulÖwhenever we are hurt or failÖnow is the time to start breaking those barriers. Open your heart and you will find inspiration everywhere!

Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself and know that everything in this life has a purpose.

Do you ever take time to listen to yourself? This may seem like a strange question, but most people donít. Most people hear what they want, but donít listen. Listening can be a very different task than hearing and can be much more difficult. It is extremely difficult to listen to yourself because you can be your biggest enemy. Take some time and think about where you are and what youíre doing. Listen to yourself and you will find that most everything we do has a purpose. Even if it seems like a meaningless or unfulfilling task right nowÖit could be building your foundation for something youíve only dreamed about.

The best inspiration is not to outdo others, but to outdo ourselves.

Winning feels good. Itís satisfying to look over at a vanquished foe knowing that, when tested, you came out on top. Winning is a rush. But, like most rushes, the high of winning can fade with time and memory. The victories that stick, the ones that build lasting confidence, are the ones where you impress yourself instead of others. Itís easy to win. Itís tougher to win when it requires you to be at the top of your game and constantly improving. But itís so much more meaningful. In the same way, lasting motivation comes from the bars we set high for ourselves. Humans have a way of working hard to live up to our own standards. For the best measuring stick, look to your past and to your potential. More often than not, when you commit to being your best, the victories will come anyway.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

It is very important for us all to remember to give thanks to the people who help us remember what living is all about. Who has helped you rekindle your inner spirit or remember why you are here? Call them or write them a simple note of thanks. Once you have figured out what you are passionate about, these people will help keep you motivated to your purpose.

If the world seems cold to you, kindle fires to warm it.

What if you donít like what is going on around you? What if you see something that you disagree with or something that you know you could help with? How about doing something about it? Donít just sit back and assume that somebody else with take care of things. Step up for yourself! Donít be afraid or intimidated by other people if something seems important to you. You can start small. Make a difference in little ways. But little fires quickly turn into large ones with a little bit of work.

One of the virtues of being very young is that you don't let the facts get in the way of your imagination.

Isnít this true? When you were young, did you ever let the facts stop you from using your imagination? For most youngsters, imagination makes anything possible. But, as we grow up, something changes. We start not only paying close attention to the details, but also stop using our imagination to dream. In some situations, facts have to tell you what to do. But, donít let the facts interfere with every aspect of your life. Take some time to imagine whatís possible and work your way there! You might find yourself acting like a childÖno boundaries, no limits, and tons of fun!

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.

Have you ever thought about making your daily life a vacation? Try to convey the same enthusiasm and adventure that you feel when you are on vacation everyday. For example, if you like going on vacations because it gives you a chance to relax and calm down, find ways to make that happen when you are not on vacation. You could go to a coffee shop and read or take a walk to wind down in the evening. If you like vacations because they make your life an adventure...make your everyday life an adventure. Take a different way home from work or go someplace you've never been after work.

It is the person who has done nothing is sure that nothing can be done.

The best way to persuade someone to your point of view is to prove it. While others talk about why something canít be done, leave them alone with their fault-finding and just go out and show them wrong. This strategy of action works to battle self-criticism too. You may have been born with the confidence to face any challenge, but most of us start off feeling like thereís nothing we can do. You can do more than you think, but if you never try to prove it, youíll never convince yourself of that fact. Experience is the best teacher around. Itís also the best confidence builder. The more you do, the more obstacles you overcome, the more you realize that anything is possible. When faced with the unknown, itís a great feeling to know that no matter what happens, you can handle it and find a solution.

To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination.

Has your life become stale or redundant? Most of us have days when life seems like it is the same as the day before. Try to think of new ways to approach your life. Look at the things you are having problems with and try to think of new ways to solve them. Thinking creatively is an important characteristic in terms of leadership.

Imagination is more important that knowledge.

Do you set aside time to use your imagination? Many people think that imagination is something you develop as a child. It is important to realize that creativity is an important aspect of being a leader. Some of the most successful people are successful because they have continually work to increase their imagination. Take some time and write a make believe story or read a fiction novel and let you mind go. You might find that allowing yourself to use your imagination can be a useful problem solving tool, stress management technique, and most importantly FUN!

What does jumping rope or drinking water have to do with creativity? Taking good care of your body also helps your mind, making your mind clear and helping it work faster. Creativity and imagination go hand in hand, they both can help you solve problems, and they both can make your life more fun and enjoyable!

``On the mountains of truth, you can never climb in vain; either you reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow.``

Sometimes goals are just hard to achieve. Even if you have been actively working for improvement, the end can seem far away. Take a minute, however, and look around you. Many times, the path to that goal can be filled with beneficial side effects. Perhaps your goal was to lose weight, and although you are still trying to lose that last 10 pounds, a benefit youíve gained is that you feel less tired during the day, with much more positive energy to exert. So instead of giving up, keep on pushing, for good is bound to come, even if it is from unexpected places. You learn amazing things along the way. Aim high, and enjoy the ride to the top.

To feel awe is to be touched by the wonder of things. Awe is the same and different for each of us. As long as we are aware of the world around us, we never end.

Today, let me experience awe.

Letting go of the pressure of time can open up a fresh new way to live, today and every day.

Lois - Minnesota

Indian Proverb - When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.

The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Love wasn't put in your heart to stay - Love isn't love until you give it away.

God is the friend of silence. Trees, flowers, grass grow in silence. See the stars, moon and sun, how they move in silence. - Mother Teresa

Silence allows us to slow down long enough to reaffirm our power, and refill our sources of energy. - from Seasons of the Spirit

Optimism is grace in action. - San Friend

You have to love this one.

An optimist is one who falls from a 20 story building and at every story shouts, "I'm all right so far,"

"If you let fear of consequence prevent you from following your deepest instinct, then your life will be safe, expedient and thin."

Does anyone really set out to live a watered-down version of life? Would people rather pick the leftovers off the ground instead of choosing from the ripe fruit on the tree? Itís doubtful. But to live a full life, to pick that fruit, you have to reach up. The unknown can be intimidating and downright scary. Just as your instincts are pushing you toward something you deeply want, fear can be pushing you away with thoughts of failure or unintended outcomes. That struggle can be nerve-wracking. Courageous people still feel fear. They just choose to put it aside and go with their gut. You can do it too. How? Become more afraid of keeping your dreams in a closet than the thought of what could happen if you try.
