I enjoyed reading "The Elephant in the Room; One Fat Man's Quest to Get Smaller in a Growing America by Tommy Tomlinson. He explains all he has to go through as a fat man, and his struggles to lose weight. It's very inspiring

Let's stay focused! The first month of the year is almost over. Activity is up even with some busy days. Some good eating days were had. Hopefully some weight lost. This is the time of year where most people just give up and resume bad habits.

That not me and hopefully not you. Today I did not feel like walking. I walked 3 miles at a 16:40 minute mile pace - a personal best. I actually walked more than 3 miles but I bench my pace progress on first 3 miles.

I had a couple bad eating days last week but still lost almost 2 pounds. WooHoo. This week I got an all you can eat buffet at a meeting tomorrow (still retired - not work) but rest of the week is clear for healthy eating. Got my wife cooking new things - blackened salmon was awesome. I am eating rest of some iffy foods and replacing them with better choices. For example - peanuts will be replaced by walnuts, graham crackers have been replaced by animal crackers.

We need to be healthy in case there an epidemic.

Today was cold so my wife and I drove 30 minutes to the Port Charlotte Mall and got our walking in there. 18 minute mile pace - 2.5 miles - not as long as our nature walks but enough to get my steps in.

Thanks everyone for the support.

This is fine.
6000 a day for dayers
42000 a week for weekers

Works for me - either one is a win.

I walking an hour every morning now - unreal. over 3 miles

Okay, while I hope not to use it, for me, I would like to make the challenge 42,000 steps each week instead of 6000 per day. But of course everyone can set their own bar higher! emoticon

I'm glad that the challenge is helping us all. 6000 or 6500 steps per day is very motivating for me. It's fine with me if a weekly goal works for you, Candy.
I almost took advantage of that yesterday, but I was able to get over 6500. For me, the daily goals work better so I will stick with that. I am frankly not looking forward to increasing the daily goals.

You know it just the three of us - I am fine if you want to go with a weekly count. 6000x7 is 42000. Increase it by 3500 every week or maybe 4000 every week is fine with me. This is so driving me to walk more.

I am in the groove right now. No imminent threats to derail me;

Normally, I have several opportunities to walk or jog in place and work with hands weights. But Friday was mostly close watch of the video's and pictures I monitor and some detailed data entry that I was just learning. Buy I bounced back for today!

Paul I wonder if we could tweak the challenge and have it be so many steps a week or month. That way if you had to miss a day you could make it up later or even before hand by getting extra steps the day before or after. We could use the same number of daily steps and multiply it by 7 days for each week. The more successful we feel, the more likely we are to stick to the challenge. What do you think?

PS thank you all for your support. I love this team!

Paul, I appreciated your post with the pictures, especially the sunset.I hope you can avoid lots and lots of alcohol. The less you drink, the better your goals will be.
I have forgotten the challenge a few times. Fortunately I've remembered in time. Please keep going. Every day is a new chance to win.

Candy, I hope you can give yourself breaks during the day to get a few steps in. My fitbit reminds me to walk for 2minutes every hour between 9 and 5. That's very helpful.

I missed step challenge on Sunday - that's right - the first day of week. It really does not matter if we achieve the challenge - the pursuit is what is important - that we increase our steps and are motivated to walk.

I know how hard it is when one works at a desk. At least it not at a candy company!

Paul you know where you want to be and you are taking steps in that direction so you are on your way! I am not going to make me step challenge today, This is my first day to miss, so I don't feel too bad. I worked 10 hours sitting a t a desk and had no energy to make up the difference tonight.

I am back to where I was Nov 18th before Thanksgiving week, wedding, College Gradution, Christmas parties in Pennsylvania, Christmas in Florida and New Years. I am walking over 3 miles a day at 19 minute mile pace. Weight 382 (7 pounds hire than when I started SparksPeople years ago) but 22 pounds less than when I moved to Florida. Slowly but definitely changing my lifestyle. Cutting back on alcohol - wine or beer or whisky 5+ times a week seems to slow down weight loss or maybe it is the peanuts or crackers and cheese I have with the alcohol.... In Florida everything is fried - omg - or smoked - makes sense not to use ovens. I am working on reducing alcohol, red meat and fried food. OMG - those wings the other day were so good but I will try to wait at least a month before splurging again.

I have lost three pounds, but that is just a drop in the bucket. I have a long way to go to get where I want to be. Sitting at a computer for 8 to 10 hours a day is brutal for your health. I can get up and exercise some of the time. I was just being lazy. I should have weighed in weeks ago. emoticon

I have been eating and drinking highly caloric things too. We didn't have any Christmas candy or cookies here, but I did eat a lot of desserts. I can't eat much, but I have been eating often which all adds up. I am a little jealous of the cookies Paul because homemade sugar cookies are the only thing my husband and I wish we could have had. We just were not anywhere around them. Darn it! I am starting on the right path tomorrow morning. Except for the step challenge. I am going to get my 6000 steps in today period. Yes it is 9:47 at night. I better get to stepping! HAPPY NEW YEAR team Lose to Win!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!!!

January 3rd marks the end to some really bad eating and drinking I been doing since week of Thanksgiving. A lot of family, a lot of celebrations and a lot of cookies. My wife made cookies in Pennsylvania and we left them there so I would not be tempted by them during the last two weeks of the year. My dear Rachel - the newlywed - so sweet - gave me a big tub of Christmas cookies she made since my wife didn't have any.

I have resumed walking daily. On the third tracking and staying within calories.

Enjoy the holidays! Winter months are long and cold - oh wait what am I saying - I live in Florida - Sunny and 80s for me!!!!

Later!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Busy weekend for me with a house full of people. Daughter Rachel got married Saturday so we had a full house of guests. Wedding went great and so did the reception. After wedding / reception I drove my other two daughters home - took 20 hours to drive from Southern Florida to Eastern Pennsylvania. Had to come up to PA for Heather's graduation so figured I'd drive the kids up and save them airfare.

I do not have many pictures - professional photographer is still doing their thing but Her is one of Rachel making sure the dress fits prior to Saturday.

My day finally came and I retired from the prison last Friday. WOO HOO!!!! It feels amazing! I don't get to move to an awesome place like Paul did and I am too young and under-payed for too many years to actually retire yet... But for the last several months I have been working two jobs to test out the second one. I love the job, they love me, so I started full time two days after I left my prison gig. I am thrilled! It is a no stress job working from home. I am at a computer, but at least half of the day I can jog in place, and use hand weights. So that's a plus. Also working 40 hours instead of 60 or 70 will feel like semi-retirement. emoticon

I have the extra, time, the desire and my friends here to cheer me on, so I am ready to get back to healthy living! emoticon

Some good news. Wife swelling went down and the Doctor determined she could weight bear.

She can take short walks - which is good. We walked around the block. Hard to believe given a day ago she was in constant pain and had a swollen ankle that might need surgery.

Today was a setback. Wife and I walked to our favorite restaurant and she fell breaking her ankle. I lost my walking buddy for weeks. This is a serious downer. I walked 2 mile to restaurant and 2.5 miles back (different route). My daughter got my wife. Just to top it off - my daughter ate half my lunch (Shrimp - cocktail kind). When I got home, my wife ankle was swelling more and really hurt so I took her to Urgent Care.

I am bummed.

This week has been a week of walking. Wife and I have been walking mostly at Lemon Bay Park (like a mile from house). Yesterday or maybe Tuesday I took a couple pictures of the wooded part of the trail. A bald eagles winter here but I don't see a nest nor do I see the eagles so they must have not arrived yet. We visited the Jetty (Stone pier) on the gulf in town where I got a nice shot (okay iphone - about 20 nice digital shots) of a pelican. I have lost 14 pounds since Oct 1 and I am now 24 pounds lighter than I was when I arrived here September 2018 (net). Many years ago I joined SparkPeople weight 375 pounds. Got down to 300, Got up to 405 (Florida start weight) and soon I'll be back to 375. I'm awful at this. I have a new lifestyle, no longer work at a candy company with endless supply, no more high calorie lunches, after work beers and stress eating. That's bad grammar but I'm tired so I am leaving it.

Paul, thanks for the beautiful photo. It's great that you two are getting to enjoy the parks in your area.

HI Laura and Paul!!! Update: Only two more weeks until I retire my prison job after 28 1/2 years. Right now I am working one full time job (The prison) and a part time job (Monitoring offender video visits and emails/video grams from home). November 22, I will leave the prison and work the part time job, full time. So instead of the 60 or more hours a week I have been working for several months, I will be back to 40 hours. Woo Hoo! Then I will be out of excuses and ready to get back on track. Hold the fort down. I will be here on a regular basis very soon!!! I can't wait to hang out with you both as well as any other team members we can rustle up. emoticon

Today's evening walk was at Maxine Barritt Park which has a 2/3 mile walking trail around a small "lake" along the ocean. Wife and I love this park. We did a lap and half, watched sunset and half lap back to car.

Having a good week as far as meeting step goals. Slacking on other goals.
I'm glad you are being so active

The streak continues. Woke up this AM and walked to the local farmer market and back (3 miles round trip). Swimming in afternoon and evening walk. Wife failed to cook. :( I grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for my and Rachel's lunch (Rachel gets a free lunch every workday). I had hamburger for lunch, apple for breakfast, a stale chocolate thing for snack, Bush Beans and chicken for dinner (again). A beer and some nuts for post dinner snack. Wife and I are going to work on having cooked food for lunches and dinners.

Hope everyone is having a great week.

HI! Just checking in. Paul I need to look for my tracker. They stopped us from wearing them at the prison so I set it aside and have no clue where I put it. emoticon

What another good day. Under calories so I can have a beer n nuts during game - Woohoo. We went to our favorite Tiki bar and I got pound peal and eat shrimp. Wife got a salad. i like shrimp - low calories and tasty. I was on my own for dinner (wife had leftover salad) so I got a small can of Bush Baked Beans and sliced up some chicken breast (wife cooks several so I have food during week for lunch and stuff). Put them both in the same dish and microwaved.
Yeah - I'm no chef.

This morning I got up late - missed morning walk. Wife was at bible study 2.5 miles away. So I walked there and got a ride home (well - we stopped for lunch). At lunch we saw dolphins swimming in the bay. Love this place. Summer everyday.

Unrelated - our gator in the pond in back still quite noisy starting around 11:30 pm. Poor guy - mating season ended months ago...

I'm glad it's been going so well for both of us Paul. This challenge has motivated me to walk several times this week. I also have exceeded 5000 steps each day. Let's keep going!
