I am assuming your doctor has your blood sugars checked every few years, to see if you are falling into the prediabetes catagory, etc. Before I lost weight, I was getting very close to pre-diabetes and that is one reason I decided to loose some weight. Now my sugars have gone from a fasting 90/95 to a fasting 80/85, so further away from pre-diabetes at least. :) Good luck to you, and loosing some weight will definately help one avoid diabetes. Even though sometimes, I think holding it off is the best one can do. Okay, maybe it is a tad defeatist, but I assume as I had gestational diabetes, and now my dad and my brother both have diabetes, that I will probably get it someday. But the longer I can hold it off, the healthier my life can be.

thanks for the replies :D
i think i will try whole grain ... and brown rice instead of white
i try to eat wraps instead of bread
i also have a fear of becoming diabetic as my father and his brother and sister have all become type 2 diabetics as they have aged

i think i want to lose weight for life not for a diet so i will tell my friend "good for you... but it is not for me" emoticon

Many do manage to loose weight and keep it off on a low carb diet, but yes they tend to eat high protein and high fat. This is not a diet for everyone. Personally, I can not eat high fat as it disagrees with my IBS. So I eat somewhat high carb, low fat and somewhat low protein. I was able to loose weight on this, if rather slowly, and to keep it off. For me it is more the way I normally eat and therefore more sustainable for me. I think a successful diet is what you can continue for the rest of your life, not what looses weight the fastest. Now if you are diabetic, then one does have to be more careful about carbs, which as of yet, I am not. I was gestational diabetic, diabetes while pregnant, so that will probably change some day, as there is a large chance I will become diabetic as I age.

has anyone tried low carbs? one of my friends is really pushing how much weight she is losing on a low carb (and loads up the gym with a personal trainer etc) and saying how i should try it
thing is i dont eat much meat and mostly my diet is meals around potato and pack lunches around bread and cereals for breakfast
i know i am losing weight slowly(if at all) but i am living a lifestyle that is sustainable for me and i can continue for life
so low carb is it sustainable and is it real food?
sounds to me that it is just like atkins (which was found to be unhealthy) which is fine if you can live on meat .. which as a mostly vegetarian i can't
