. Corned beef and cabbage is an Irish-American invention

Boiled beef and cabbage via Shutterstock

Back in Ireland, the Irish ate boiled bacon on St. Patrick’s.

Bacon was replaced with corned beef in America because most of the 19th century Irish immigrants to America were poor, and brisket, being the cheapest cut of meat, was all they could afford to celebrate their special day with

Corn Poppin' Facts:
Popcorn pops because water is stored in a small circle of soft starch in each kernel. As the kernel is heated, the water heats, the droplet of moisture turns to steam and the steam builds up pressure until the kernel finally explodes to many times its original volume.

HARDTACK:Hardtack (or hard tack) is a simple type of cracker or biscuit, made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Inexpensive and long-lasting, it was and is used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods, commonly during long sea voyages and military campaigns.[1] The name derives from the British sailor slang for food, "tack". It is known by other names such as pilot bread, ship's biscuit, shipbiscuit, sea biscuit, cabin bread, sea bread (as rations for sailors) or pejoratively "dog biscuits", "tooth dullers", "sheet iron", "worm castles" or "molar breakers".[2] Australian and New Zealand military personnel knew them with some sarcasm as ANZAC wafer.

What is Figgy Pudding?
Before you sing, "Now bring us some figgy pudding," it might be helpful to know exactly what you are requesting. Figgy pudding is an English dish similar to bread pudding. Made from figs, bread crumbs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and milk, the pudding is baked, then topped with a scrumptious brandied hard sauce, custard icing, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.

The dish was immortalized in the song We Wish You a Merry Christmas and was served by Mrs. Cratchit in the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol.

Johnnycake
Native Americans were using ground corn for cooking long before European explorers arrived in the New World. The johnnycake originates with the native inhabitants of Northern America; the Algonquians of the Atlantic seaboard are credited with teaching Europeans how to make the food.[14]

Flapjacks vs pancakes:
The difference between flapjacks and pancakes include their ingredients and how they're cooked. Flapjacks are flat cakes made out of a mixture of oats and butter with added sugar/honey.. They are made in the oven. Pancakes are made out of flour, milk and eggs and are prepared by frying.

Pine-nuts, for Ancient Greeks and Romans, were believed to be an aphrodisiac. Whether for that reason or not, the pine-nut continues as a standard ingredient in today’s Italian cuisine. Pine-nuts are the edible seeds of pine trees, removed from pine cones. They contain nutrients including useful amounts of zinc, niacin, manganese and the amino acid or protein arginine. An average serve is two tablespoons of pine nuts.

Although the word "pizza" was first documented in 997 AD in Gaeta[1] and successively in different parts of Central and South Italy, the history of the dish itself is not very clear or well documented.

The precursor of pizza was probably the focaccia, a flat bread known to the Romans as "panis focacius", to which toppings were then added.[2]

Potatoes aren’t the only terrific tuber out there. Native to central North America, Jerusalem artichokes (Helianthus tuberosus) — often called by the more modern name “sunchokes” — are so prolific they can become invasive, but if handled properly, they will be a productive and rewarding crop. The edible parts of these plants are their knobby roots, which have a crisp texture like that of water chestnuts. When cooked, they become a soft, nutty alternative to potatoes.
