To live a long life.
I was diagnosed with heart failure last year. My cardiologist said I could maybe expect to live 10 or 12 years. I don't want to accept that. I wanted to live a long life. So tomorrow, when I go back to him, I'm going to ask about anything I can do to prolong my life. Maybe I'll be able to inch out a few more years. Glenn

My wife suffers from Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis, Diabetes and various intestinal challenges. In addition, her hearing is quickly deteriorating. She is still mobile and alert, thank God. The move to Tucson was very challenging, but we are now through all of it. Lucky for me, my health is rather good. Taking some meds for blood pressure and cholesterol - more of a pre-management plan. If I got my act together, I could eliminate the meds by sticking to a healthy lifestyle! That is my goal.

Glenn, I have had this guitar since 2000, took a few lessons back in 2005, but mostly it has sat in the corner of my office on a nice stand. The recent Apple commercial got me thinking about learning to play, and when I found out GarageBand has guitar lessons built in, that got me moving. Still haven't done a lesson yet, but guitar is all tuned up (thanks to my local music store who helped) and the year is young!

That's great. Do you play? If so, were you self taught? I've got a classical guitar I bought a couple about five years ago, but I haven't really been playing. Was thinking of taking lessons. Glenn

This one was not on my "list", but I am pretty proud of something I did today -- I restrung my acoustic guitar all by myself!

What prompted this? I downloaded "GarageBand" to my Mac the other evening, as one of the cool things it has is guitar lessons. It also has a tuner! So I started the app and was tuning my guitar when the 1st string broke. Not a shock considering those strings have been on there for at least 9 years! Anyway, I did a search on replacing guitar strings, went to the "Fender University" videos and saw how easy it was. Stopped by my local music store where I had intended to get the lightest strings (and cheapest) available, but the store employee told me I should consider a slight heavier set of strings, which only cost me $2 more.

Strings are on, will do some tuning tonight!

Bob, we are very lucky that we have a kennel nearby that we trust implicitly with our 3 greyhounds. 3 seems to be a good # for us -- adding any more would be a challenge, not that we couldn't figure it out, but just the same we're OK where we are at.

Patrick if you have to be attacked, that would be the way to do it. That sounds like fun. We saw a friend who breeds Siberian Huskies and she had three litters at one time, I think it was 16 little Huskies. I had to go and see them, but my wife wouldn't let me get one, She told me to be happy with the two we have, and reminded me of the problem everytime we want to go somewhere for a few days, the problems we have finding a sitter for them! They are too precious for a kennel in her eyes.

My wife has discovered a greyhound kennel on FB -- Blue Too Kennel, located in Florida. The videos of the greyhound puppies just brings a smile to my face, even on a bad day. I told my wife that on my bucket list is to go visit this kennel and be "attacked" by greyhound puppies!

Been thinking about bulking up at the gym. My belief is that I have tried all year to take off a few pounds, to no avail (down 2). Maybe if I were to bulk up a little, some of my paunch would disappear. Just a thought. Glenn

I do at least one Tai Chi practice once a week (sometimes two) first thing in the morning. I follow a Gaiam DVD with David Dorian Ross -- 20 minutes -- very simple but very but very enjoyable. Great intro to Tai Chi.

I understand there are elements that can turn Tai Chi into a martial art. Never seen how that works, but I guess that would be an option if you looked to take it to a whole other level...

Patrick, I have been deciding what to add to my life. That is why I mentioned the guitar lessons or Tai Chi. I thought, since I am already doing a lot of reading and sitting, I'm going to add hikes to my routine two days per week. (On alternating days from when I work out.) Then when I get used to five days of activity, I might add the Tai Chi. Glenn

I like that "bucket list" for running too!

Great idea!

Only run races in six states: Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Hawaii and North Dakota. Pretty sobering to realize that I will have a long way to go if I take that challenge on.

A couple running "bucket list" items came to mind this morning:

- Run a race in every state I have ever lived in.
- Run a race in all 50 states.

Here are the states I have lived in: Iowa, Colorado, California, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. So far just races run in Pennsylvania and Delaware. As far as the 50 state goal, add Arizona to the list. A long way to go on both lists.

If I daydream enough, I could easily come up with a bunch of them. Here's the "short list"

- Travel into space
- Sky dive
- Start a successful business
- Travel to all 7 continents (yet to hit Africa, South America, or Antarctica)
- Build a dream home in Kauai

Sky Diving - not that tandem thing either.
Alaskan cruise (with the wife of course).
Learn to speak Spanish
Mission trip to the reservations in South Dakota
Learn to weld
Learn to run a backhoe

That's about it for now. I'll come up with more as I check those off.
I want to die with stuff left to do on my list but a long list of completed items...

Sketter - great bucket list items!

I am 64 this August and soon to enter the ranks of the retired. My wife and I buried my parents and inlaws over the past six years; three in 2013. Like most, I worry if what we have saved will take us through our "golden" years. Actually, more like "health care" years! So, our bucket list will be predicated upon our health and finances. I do not have much of a personal list, the activity would include my wife - that's just the way it is with us. We traveled to Italy last year for a week on the Caribbean and a week in the vineyard hills. We are done with long distance travelling, too much work. I'm a golfer, so maybe there are one or two great golf courses that would be nice to play. My preference would be Augusta, but I am pretty sure that will not be attainable.

Always wanted to retrace my G G fathers journey in the Civil War. He wrote letters home to his Dad about the many hardships they had. His Dad, my G G Grandfather kept these letters and I have them in my possession. What a thrill I get when I touch these dating from 1831-1834. My 4 sons had one planed for us 2 + years ago but the GLBH spent a month in the hospital and took care of that one. More important that she lived, I wrote a blog on it if any are interested.
Emptied out of my bucket is I bought a tractor same make as my first one International 400, 1956. I will restore it eventually . Takes much money! That's enough for now. The Old Farmer Skeeter emoticon

One thing I want to do is go hand gliding. My weight has always kept that from happening along with ziplining.

Hi gents,

Been meaning to add this discussion for some time now. My guess is that most, if not all of us have thought about a bucket list, so here's your chance to share. Or if you have NEVER given this any thought, you can see what other 50+ men have come up with and and maybe develop one of your own.

This is just a fun topic -- no judging allowed!

I'll wait for a few entries before I give this a go. I don't have a formal bucket list but do have some ideas of what would be on mine.

Have fun!
