My weight loss is very gradual. At the time I wrote my comment on in in January 2017, I had just dropped below 290. I am now at 277. IT was nice to spot this tonight, and see that I have come down . Glenn

Started at 247 about one year ago, when I was working. Been retired 3 months. Been working on my health. down to 226 with a weight goal of 215 by the end of 2017. During 2018 I hope to break the 200 lb barrier for the first time in over 48 years.

Re: BMI useful or not? From Spark:

There are some drawbacks to using BMI. It is not very accurate for pregnant women, people less than five feet tall, or people who have a lot of muscle mass. For most adults, however, there is a clear correlation between higher BMI and negative health consequences. Just remember, BMI is a guideline to help you decide your target weight.

A lot of people dismiss BMI, but I'm guessing they are neither pregnant, real short or very muscular!

Well, earlier this year I was 252 and now I am down to 236. Still considered obese for my height of 5-101/2. I need to get to 225 and then readjust my lifestyle to be near 200. I have got down to 225 about 8 years ago and felt pretty good, but with retirement coming up I need to find a way to get to 200 (by the way, that will still be overweight according to "the BMI chart", but I do not care for charts so much).

I have recently put on a few pounds. Currently 168.
163 would get me out of overweight BMI so that is my goal weight.

Just looking at my goal weight from last month. I met the 163 based on BMI target. Set a new goal of 162 but have wandered back up to 166.

I have decided after six or more months at the same weight, to take a break from trying to lose. I am almost 50 lbs down from my all time high. Just taking a long break.

Glenn,
Nice method for goal setting. I'm following a similar process. I'm at 165.5 which is 3 lbs less than a year ago. Recently, I increased my weight target to 163. That weight would get my BMI out of the overweight range.

Once I get (back) there, I would set another intermediate goal (e.g. maybe 159, as it breaks the 160 "barrier", or maybe based on a weight from the last four years of tracking).

New goal weight is 250, which is 10% off of where I am now. Then, I might try to go down by 25 more, to 225. Glenn

Hi Glenn, I totally understand! I would say that I've got a slender frame, and if it weren't for my love of sweets, I would be a rail! Find the number that works for you, that's what I say!

I'm about 269 now. Would like to get down to 225 at some point. I am six four and big boned, so I almost looked like a rail last time I was 225.

My scale reports body fat %, body fluid %, and BMI. I've always felt that BMI was a useless measurement because it ignores so many factors, like musculature. I like body fat %, although calipers measure subcutaneous fast and visceral fat differently. Mine is all subcutaneous, and right now I'm eager to see that gone.

cheapest is a caliper, but subject to "user" error (plus hard to do without someone else doing the measurement)

I use a scale that reports body fat %. It's not the most accurate method. But it does a good job of consistently reporting results, even if off from verified results. Can purchase at Wal-Mart, Amazon, etc.

My goal weight is 195 to 200. at this weight, I'll can manage my blood pressure without meds and sleep apnea diminishes. I haven't consider body fat which is another consideration. What's the most economical way to measure fat?

I like body fat %. It "covers' height/weight, body type, etc. all in one measure. My scale's fat % is in whole numbers. This morning I was 21%, but typically (most of the time) report 20%.

My first year on SP when I was really diligent, I weighed 23 lbs. less and my body fat was under 15%. I forget what I have read about the acceptable range for us middle aged guys. But believe 18% is an acceptable target. Anything below that is vanity, not health reasons. But vanity is a powerful motivator.

Also, SP's weight targets are based on healthy weight ranges, which, again, I think is north of 18%.

Hey guys, I'm looking for advice from my fellow men. I don't think women have the same perspective on this subject.

How do you determine your goal weight? Did you just go by what SP says you should be based on your height? Is it a number that is significant to you? Or are you looking for something more, like body fat percentage?

For the first time in my life, I feel really fit. I mean REALLY fit. I can feel my abs, my legs are stronger, and my shoulders are getting "cut." I'm just a pound away from the goal weight, according to SP, but I feel like I need to keep pushing myself. There are still pockets of visible fat under my skin, and I would love to see those go away. The scale says I'm at 19.5% body fat, and Men's Health recommends 11-18%.

I would love to see, even at my age, what's possible for my body. Should I be worried about going too far?
