We have another winter storm approaching Tuesday night. They are predicting snow again. I am so tired of them cancelling school when we have a storm pass through. These kids will be going to school all summer to be able to make up the days!! We are just not equipped for snow here in town or ice. Our temps drop into the mid 20's before Wednesday. They will stay that way, but there will be sun, so this school ban should only last one day. To everyone out there who is experiencing terrible winter storms, stay safe and warm !! Be prepared for the unwelcome weather before the storm hits. Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

Queen Carlotta, here is a brief description, I hope it helps. Please feel free to go to the team leaders of the team you got placed on and ask a million questions if you need to, someone will surely help and you will be up and flying in no time!

The air miles are just the exercise minutes you do each day. So if you exercise 30 minutes you have helped your team fly 30 miles that day. Each week we virtually fly to a new destination around the world. So if our new destination is 3,630 miles, your 30 minutes of exercise that day helped your team fly 30 miles. Once a team flys it's miles for the week with the help of everyone who is exercising on their team, the plane then lands. First three planes to land each week get extra points I believe.

You will be tracking these airline miles along with the living the good life points (LTGL) on a thread your team sets up, there will be a new thread each week for each new destination.

The Living the good life points are different than air miles, they count towards Living the good life points, some of the LTGL things done are getting water in or another item the overall challenge leaders come up with, they are things to help you on your weight loss journey, in the past they have included things such as...getting in your water, eating off a smaller plate, decluttering your home, tracking your new like that stuff. You will not know these ahead of time, they are announced once a week for the new one each week.

Hi Queen Carlotta! I felt exactly like you do when I did my first challenge. I just watched and read what others were doing and , very shortly, I was feeling very comfortable. When in doubt, just ask a question. Challenge members are very helpful and our leaders are are great. Welcome to your first challenge, take a deep breath, and enjoy your journey!

Carlotta, take a few deep breaths. There should be a message board that is where people are chatting as we do here. Ask your questions there or send your team leader the questions, they will guide you.

What I did for my 1st challenge, and still did on this my 9th challenge, is open every thread on my team. That's how I understood what to do & where to post what. Seeing was easier for me.

"Air miles" represent each minute you exercise plus the points from the weekly challenge, e.g. drink 8 glasses of water daily. So, if you exercise 30 minutes today, you have earned 30 air miles. If you drank only 6 glasses of water, you earn 6 more miles, for a total of 36 air miles.

Hope this helps.

I'm feeling very confused and worried I won't be able to figure out the rules in time. I understand that we are to post our weight in the reply we set up, but I'm not sure where to post my points. And I'm totally confused about the "air miles" thing. I have read all the FAQS, but haven't found the answers to these questions yet.

Verna - There are Canadians to be found on SP and one of the other teams that I go to regularly is the Calling All Canadians team. There might even be a team for your province - there is for mine. And as for it being a small world - although I live in Central Ontario our daughter lived in Calgary for 4 and half years and just moved back east less than 6 months ago. We're thrilled to have her - and our grandson - closer but will miss our jaunts to Alberta. We made visits out three summers in a row and did try to do a bit of exploring around. Nice to have another Canadian on the team. Good luck in the challenge. And I'm impressed with the amount of exercise you did at the gym! emoticon Sometimes once we get going on a good workout though it is hard to stop. emoticon

Karen - Haven't actually heard the expression "it smells like snow" but I do find sometimes in warmer weather, especially the summer, that it smells like rain. There's an abundance of snow around here and it seems that we're in for more so if anyone wants me to ship some.... emoticon emoticon emoticon

Karen, I remember that when I was younger. People would always say "It smells like sn*w." Now I hear, "It feels like sn*w." I hate sn*w so either will drive my anxiety up the roof.

We were supposed to have a dusting to 2" in my area. Ended up with 3 1/2 to 4" today with another 4 to 8" arriving tomorrow. Tonight I am making a plan to not anxiety eat!

Have a good Friday evening!

Does anyone else remember saying, "It smells like snow!"? We used to say it all the time growing up. Yesterday, while I was out and about, it sure smelled like snow. Then yesterday afternoon, the skies lowered. The flurries started around midnight, and I woke up to about an inch of snow on the ground. I'm ready for a jolly-whopper though!!

Need to take a day off from the recumbent bike today. Had a procedure done on my knee this morning. I'm toying with taking a short nap.

Tickled to be part of this group. But I'm not retired so all this can be right now is short and sweet. 15 degrees at 6:30am; colder than Seattle & University Place (they are higher ground). Bundled up today in my pretty blue wool sweater. Go Hawks and a walk inside later before working out. Have a great day!

Hey RetiredSue what a small world. I was so happy to see your post. I noticed that there are too many Rookies for this challenge and some of us newbies will be put on other teams. I'm just happy to have been given a chance to do this Challenge and anxious to meet my new teammates.

I did a one hour exercise class at the gym this morning and thought that while I was there I might as well work a few strength training machines just in case the wind blows up a storm tomorrow which could leave me stranded in a snow drift. Turned out I worked the machines for an hour too. I might be a little sore tomorrow because I upped the weight and changed the sets to 20-15-10 reps each. Yesterday I did an hour on the elliptical, aerobic Level 1. I was totally soaked when I was done. Thank goodness there is a shower at the gym!!

Have a great evening challengers.

Verna - Charlotte - emoticon to the challenge. It's been snowy and has turned cold here too (maybe not as cold as the prairies) but I did head out to an appointment downtown today on foot slogging through the snow. I makes for a good workout! DH got the shovelling done while I was gone so I missed out on that "fun"! emoticon

Charlotte - I considered asking for the Tiger Monarch when I joined my first challenge because it was the closest thing to my Tiger Cats! I decided that since I was new I should let them assign me to a team and have been a happy Awesome A ever since.

Your teams will have a question thread so that you can ask for clarification on any challenge and get a response from the leaders who won't steer you wrong. Teammates can also be a great source of advice and give you helpful hints. Good luck to you on the challenge.

Earnie - I use a health app on my smart phone to track steps although I know that it's probably not entirely accurate. Of course that only works if you have a smart phone of some type and keep it in your pocket or on your person at all times.

Good Morning, everyone!!!

I already did my morning stretching and strength routine while the puppies were outside finding the perfect spot and barking at nothing. I hope you all have a fantastic day. Stay warm for the ones in colder regions.
To all a great day!

Verna, welcome to the challenge! To me, this is one of the best challenges you can do here on SP! The overall leaders are wonderful at helping to guide us every step of the way, as are the leaders of each team. Including the Rookie Team! To me, the challenge offers an opportunity to receive and give encouragement, accountability, and support in our weight loss journey. I actually joined my first challenge in January 2011, and it has been the best thing I've ever done. I've had highs and lows, but mostly highs.

So, if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

It is 3:30am here in central Indiana, and I'm wide awake - again. My CPAP machine told me that I only received 3.9 hours of sleep last night, and the insurance company requires me to get at least 4 per night. I'll probably get a nap in before they pull that data. I've been taking naps around 7am. I mean, by then it is pretty much lunch hour for me..HA!

Also, if you get a chance, would love for you all to read my latest blog on my page.

Verna, welcome to the 5% Challenge world. Your teammates will help you along the way & just ask questions. They will help & share what works for them.

I'm doing the practice challenge on our team. It helps get me back in the habit of daily check-in. I also find that posting to the Challenge thread daily motivates me to exercise. I don't want to let my teammates down.

I wear a pedometer every day and feel lost without it. These days haven't been doing any outdoor walking (I live in Alberta Canada and it has been rather crisp the last few weeks) but I do go to the gym at least 4 times a week, one day cardio next day strength training.

I use SP Trackers faithfully and try to eat nutritiously although my palate swings to sweets very easily. I firmly believe I am addicted to sugar.

I've never done a 5% Challenge and have been advised that I will be on the Rookie Team. Not sure how this all works but hope to navigate the course with ease. If I run into trouble I am sure my team mates will assist.

I track all my meals and my exercise daily.
I plan meals for the week, when I shop for my food.
I follow WW smart points, but also track on Spark for the calories.
I drink 8 water a day at least.
I enjoy simple recipes that I can use each week. I also find new recipes and try them out
to see if they are worth making again.
I enjoy many articles on Spark and other websites regarding health and wellness.
I really appreciate the friendships and motivation from all the Spark friends I have made
and new ones.
We are all on this Journey together and I hope to reach maintenance and become lifetime.

I use my tracker daily.. I have to with my program.

I think its important to know what your diet will entail then build from there. I know that I'm eating no grains, no potatoes & no sugar, protein is my focus so I look at my meat first to determine what kind of meals I can make. Definitely utilize what you have. Sign up for the Kroger account on linbe, you can link your kroger card to it, they have tons of coupons that you can link to your Kroger card to make the deals easier, I just learned about that! It'll even help you create a shopping list. There is an app I beliurve but I've not gone that far. It can help you though :)

I use my tracker on a daily basis.

Meal Planning-I have to plan as I can only eat so much with hardly any stomach left and there is a lot I cannot eat.

Looking forward to the Challenges and waiting for my invite.
