I was an intern architect and exhibition designer before I acquired my MS(LIS) in 2014. I currently work as a copy cataloger at a Museum Library and volunteer doing metadata entry. This month I begin searching for my next Library job as my copy cataloging contract is up.

Started out in banking, then went back to school to get a Travel Agent certification and became a travel agent, then went to Target headquarters for 15 years and did many things ending in the IT area working on various projects - while there finished my BA degree in business HR training, then I went back to school to get my Masters (MIS) at UNT with Youth Librarianship certificate while working part time as a Library Associate sub. Got my Masters in 2003, now I am a Young Adult and Children's librarian. This is my 5th or 6th career. I am so happy to have those other experiences - it helps me every day as a librarian. I'm 58, so I started the Masters program at the age of 43.

Once and future fit person, Barb.

I don't really think I've had a first career. I new I wanted to get my MLIS but it took me 10 years to finally go for it. I never felt any of the jobs I held between graduating (and thus leaving my first library job) and now were a career. But I suppose since I'm 38 and in library school it is more of a late-stage career.

Artist, self-employed craftsman, before I "fell" into libraries. Now I am working with a publisher, and also working on my writing. I try to volunteer at a library now when I can after working in libraries for about 18 years. Back to being creative but use libraries all the time.

I was a second grade teacher before becoming a library assistant. Now I'm a non-MLS supervisor and am working on my MLS. I just finished my 5th class of 12. Slowly but surely!

I read somewhere that that most librarians are 2nd (or 3rd) career--I think the percentage was over 70%. Wish I could remember where I read that.

This is will be my second career. I am still working full-time in my 1st career as an accountant while I work on my MLIS, which I will hopefully complete in 2013. I think that the strong prevalence of entering librarianship as a 2nd (or later) career helps bring a lot of diversity to the field.

I feel like I'm really on my third career, because after 10+ years in high tech I did a few years' stint in educational technology before finally landing my dream job as a systems librarian. Anyone else here had another career before you became a librarian?
