Hey all just got back from my 2 week post op. I have lost 18 pounds since leaving the hospital and a total of 33 since my last visit just before my surgery which my RN said was a record. She said the usual is around 20. So far no ill effects what so ever no pain no nausea or diahhrea. I am onto puree foods now. All in all everything is going great. I was expecting far more problems from everything I have read here and was told by the RN and Nutritionist. Hope everyone has a great Christmas woo hoo for pureed turkey dinner lol.

Steph, sounds like you are doing great! I am a T2 myself. I see my endo next week and may try just taking the Januvia and not the insulin and see what happens! I am down to only 12 units of lantus a day and my A1c has been 5.9 since this summer. For my presurgery diet I actually was allowed some carbs as I was on insulin and they wanted to make sure my blood glucose remained level prior to surgery. I had 3-4 protein drinks and 1 lean meal each day.
I am surprised at the carnation instant breakfast. That is so nutritionally poor and full of chemicals from what I remember when I looked at it. I would look at nutrtition label and do some research online and make sure you are getting sufficient nutrients.

Becca..., Sounds like you are unique like me! I was high and in the risk category earlier this year in B12, Calcium, and Potassium. I was taken off those supplements or they were reduced. Now I am high and in a risk category for copper and have to figure out how I am getting copper (my vitamins and supplements do not have copper) and stop using that product. They suspect it is in my water. Sounds like you are doing great foodwise and that is probably why you are not needing the supplements because you are getting the nutrients in food like everyone else! Keep up the great work!

As to goals. Please rethink what you are choosing for a goal and consider making a lifetime goal instead of a one time goal. What happens if you do not get to that magic number? You will be disappointed and maybe depressed. What happens after you get to that number and you no longer have a realistic lifelong goal? Stop exercising, stop tracking food???? At the two weight loss surgery conferences I attended speakers and workshop leaders stressed over and over not to make your goal a specific number on a scale. They said a better goal than a specific number on a scale is "To be a healthy weight, active and exercising regularly" With that goal I will not be disappointed if I do not reach xxx number on the scale, I am successful today and keeping my goal. I can keep this goal now at my current weight and be successful and I will still be successful if I loose a little more weight. I will be successful even if I weigh 5 pounds more next week as long as I am healthy, active, and exercising. What happens to many people is they reach the magic number? They do not know what to do, the goal was met and there is nothing else to do, then the weight slowly comes back on as they were focused on a number instead of being healthy and exercising. Some even stop exercising because they are at goal and so they do not "need" to do that anymore.
As to being frustrated with nutritional report start doing research online and educate yourself! That is what I did. Webmd has some good information but there are many resources out there. Ask your local healthfood store which nutrition books they would recommend or ask your nutritionist. You may want to consider switching to a different dietician. One who will work with you on this.
Your weight loss will slow down soon. What is going to happen if you are not at the magic number next March? Will you feel like a failure? I do not recommend putting a time limit on reaching a healthy weight. I am 15 months out and am still not at a normal BMI. I have only lost 3 pounds since September. This is not bothering me as I have learned that I am a success because I am healthy, active, and exercising most days! I look good, I feel good, and I am learning to deal with eating issues. This week has been hard foodwise and I plan to increase my exercise by going to a water aerobics class tomorrow morning (my day off) and again on Monday morning. I wil also go to my regular Saturday morning class and my Monday evening class. I am up one pound and am already making plans to adjust for that by eating healthier and exercising more.

My three month check in went well. My B12 and Vitamin D were actually high, so I am cutting back on those supplements a little bit.
The nutritionist was actually really surprised that I am already up to 800 - 1,000 calories a day, but her only suggestion was to 'eat more protein.' Which is her answer to *everything*. Sigh.
But I am doing really well with my weight loss, so I guess I won't stress about it too much. Those 800 - 1,000 calories are all healthy ones, so that is something I suppose. I guess I am just a little frustrated with the post surgical nutritional support. My surgeon is great, though -- can't complain about him. I am hoping to be at my goal weight by the time I see them next in March. Probably pushing my luck but I am hoping I can pull it off :)

Thanks Cindy. I appreciate all prayers. I did try to invite her to join this she didn't seem intrested, she had RNY. We both have Kaiser and they are very strict, to be honest I was suprised she got through because she all along wouldn't follow the guidelines. I offered to attend a support group with her and gave her spark people info. I am concentrated on me. My diet is all liquid. 1000 cal a day. I can have tomato juice, broths, herbal tea but the majority is all from a liquid meal replacement. The one they recommended ( and sale at the hospital) is carnation instant breakfast ready made which is 250 cal. I have some of those and some slimfast because I like the coffee flavored one. I can add spices to them as well so the chocolate will get a little cinnamon, maybe some nutmeg in the vanilla for a little "holiday nog" meal replacement. I am a type II diabetic that really watched my carbs and very little sweets so I think I will be ok there. The office has been filled with holiday cookies and I havent had any of them even before starting on the liquid so hopefully I won't develop a sweet tooth.

Steph, Congrats on starting the pre-op diet. Is yours all liquid or are you allowed one small meal with lean meat and veggies? did your co-worker have gastric bypass? If so, invite her to join us! Do not worry about possibles in the future just concentrate on today and doing the best you can each day. The first week on pre-op diet is the worst and you will have some carb withdrawal to deal with but by week 2 you should be fine! A number of us on the team always pray for those going in for surgery and so we will be praying for you too!

Becca...
Good luck at your three month checkin! BTW it takes about 6 months for your store of some nutrients to start falling (B12 and Iron are examples). Be sure that they give you a copy of the results and a listing of what is considered normal range so that you can review them and make some diet changes to boost ones that are normal but a little low or or a little too high.

Good morning all. Hope everyone is doing well. I am on day one of my preop liquid diet, so I am getting close to surgery day on 1/3/2012, little nervous but excited. My coworker just returned from leave and she has had a horrible experience. She has had sooooo many complications which scared me more, but I still know this is the right choice.

Congrats Cindy on the great checkup! I am headed to my surgeon today for my three month visit (one week early due to the holidays) and will get my blood work results today to see if I need to tweak my supplements. Good luck on stopping your insulin. I have an appointment with my rheumatologist next month to see if I can start lowering my Celebrex dose -- currently on the maximum fry-your-liver-by-30 dose.

Cosmic, I use www.myfitnesspal.com to track my food and it recalculates for the quantities I enter. Here are a few of the conversions. I did not include the metric conversions but you can look those up on the internet.

3 tsp = 1 tbl = 1/2 oz
2 tbl = 1/8 cup = 1 oz
8 oz = 1 cup
2 cups = 1 pint =16 oz
2 pints = 1 quart = 32 oz
2 quarts = 1/2 gallon = 64 oz
4 quarts = 1 gallon = 128
1/4 pound = 4 oz = 8 tbl
1/2 pound = 8 oz
1 pound = 16 oz

Yesterday I blew it food wise but I did much better today! I hope to do even better tomorrow! I will now add an extra water aerobics class on Friday and Monday (my vacation and holiday days off) to make up for those food mistakes.
I went to my naturopath today. We discussed my bloodwork. He was thrilled with the results. He said I was normal in all nutrients except two and so there is only two small tweaks to my supplements doubling the iron and adding a little zinc. Although my iron levels were low normal my store of iron was going down so I will increase my iron supplement from 18 mg to 36mg. He will check my iron levels in 3 months. If it causes more constipation I will be switched to iron shots and liquid iron instead of chewable which does not cause the constipation. He thinks three injections (1 per month) will bring my store of iron back up to normal and with the iron supplement increase should get me back to normal in 3 months. What he is most troubled about is my copper level as it is in high risk and that concerns him as my supplements and vitamins do not have copper. So I must be getting copper in my food or water. So he is increasing my zinc to help counteract the copper. I have to pay attention to whether there is copper pipes at work or home and I may need to use bottled water as too much copper means possible damage to my liver and kidney. I also need to look at my food. I need to figure out where the copper is coming from.

He also told me he expected that I would be low in most nutrients and was surprised that I had all normal levels. He said I am doing a great job nutrition wise. I do need to increase my water intake. Oh well I do not want to be perfect.
He said that this surgery was the right decision for me and that he likes the energy he sees in me now and how healthy I am. He said most of his patients do not have such good nutrient, cholesterol, A1c, and other indicators.

I told him that I was thinking about trying to not take the insulin and see how my numbers go and that I would be speaking to my endo next week about trying this. He said that he agrees that I should try not taking the insulin and see what happens. I only take 12 units of insulin a day now. I do take Januvia diabetes medication and it seems to work for me. Naturopath is a expert in diabetes and he thinks that the Januvia may keep my numbers in good control without the insulin. It felt great to learn from a medical professional that I am doing some things right!

I hope everyone has a special and blessed Christmas!

Yay! Made it through Phase I with flying colors. Now on to Phase II, full liquids. Enjoyed my Cream of Wheat "soup" this morning and found it very filling. the weight continues to drop at a rate I am satisfied with.

Yes Cindy, my surgeon did tell me why he had to change from the Roux to the gastrectomy sleeve and had warned me preop that this was a very strong possibility. I try to look at the bright side of things. No dumping syndrome, less problems with body chemistry...just a lot of +'s that I decided not to dwell on the other for more than a day.

I'm all ready for Christmas and have my food plans ready. Merry Christmas everyone!

Micheal,
I too found myself trying so hard to control my eating during the day that I would find myself so hungry and over eat. I would also have low blood sugars ,( I am diabetic) . What I did to get a better control of this is I took a weeks worth of food journals and realized I was only consuming about 10% of my daily calorie goals at breakfast, about 2% at snack, only about 8-10% at lunch and so by the time dinner or evening came around I had only had about a quarter of my caloric intake for the day. of course I was starving. I then added more food to each meal and snacks and really divided it up more evenly through the day by having a goal of 25% of my overall caloric intake with each of 3 meals and the remaining 25% broken up over 2-4 snacks. I stopped binging, and made better choices because I wasn't making food choices while starving.

As long as there is breath, there is hope

Michael, I am so sorry that you are not feeling good about your progress. Being scared is normal. This is major surgery and major lifestyle changes and major food changes. Change is difficult. You are just beginning the journey and it will take time to figure out what works best for you.
I wish I could go back to the time of waiting for surgery for the three months and start addiction counseling to work on my food issues. I think it would have made these 15 months since surgery easier to work through. Right now I am trying to find a counselor who works with addiction (Yes I am still a food addict!) I have food issues that need to be addressed in order for me to be successful at weight loss and that is my goal for 2012 to work on those issues. The surgery is a great tool but the food issues need to be addressed too.

So at your psych eval ask for help to break the control food has over you. It will help you be successful before and after surgery!
Your dietician can help you adapt your food plan to meet your physical and emotional food needs. Plus it takes about a week or two of eating a new way before your body starts to adjust to the new eating pattern. A log of food, emotions, exercise, what you are doing when you get hungry will help both the dietician and the psychologist to better help you overcome the issues.
First are you logging? Food, exercise, the time you eat and time you get hungry, and what you are doing when you get hungry should be logged for a week. This is a tool to share with both the psychologist and the dietician. Call and schedule an appointment for next week with the dietician. Tell him/her you are struggling and need help. Log everything until you go to the appointment.
If you like writing things on paper you can buy a log book (Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com and other bookstores carry a great log book. It is called The Diet Minder and is a spiral logbook for food, emotions, and exercise. It also has space for emotions and times. Another option is an online tracking log. Unfortunately the sparkpeople tracking is difficult for those of us on low calorie diets. If you like online tracking there is a free one that my dietician recommended for me and other gastric bypass patients. I really like it because I can enter things like 1/8 of a serving, or a tablespoon. If is very flexible. It has space for emotions, exercise, time and notes. I can access it from my iphone, pc, or other smart phone.

I think you should definately read the book Eat It Up! by Connie Stapleton PhD. She helps the reader identify their food issues and then gives them suggestions for overcoming and moving beyond those issues. I found it very helpful but alas I can not do it on my own so I am seeking professional help in 2012.

Do the best you can until you can get in to see the dietician. Try not to be so hard on yourself. It will take time to make the changes you developed over a lifetime.

cindy.

Let's see Fiber..... I was taking two fiber gummies each day (with intestinal nerve problems I do not use it much anymore). I think Brendalee is also using fiber gummies. It is like all gummie things you must chew it a long time before it dissolves enough to swallow. Like most people in my local support group we can not eat enough food to get sufficient fiber and sometimes the powdered fiber causes digestion problems with our pouches so most of us take miralax. How often depends upon the person but most take one dose every couple of days. All our various surgeons agree that is a product that they are ok with us taking long term.

I agree you should speak with your doctor and ask for a recommendation for a fiber supplement. You may want to also ask about the miralax in case you need it.

Thanks, Ilene. I will have to check out CVS. I am OK to eat salad and veggies, so that has been a good source of natural fiber, too. Pre-op I used a fiber supplement when I was getting hungry but I knew I wasn't actually hungry, so I am hoping to start doing that again for those times when my brain thinks I am ready for dinner at 4pm. I will check with my doc when I go next week to be sure.

Hi all. Hope everyone is well this crazy week before Christmas. I have my first appointment with he Psychologist this Friday. Gotta say I'm still scared. I think I have never admitted to myself the control food has over me until recently and truly hate not being able to "fix" this on my own. I am having a very hard tie with the "practice" diet I am supposed to be doing for my dietician. I just cant make these exchanges work and equal any where near 1500 calories. The come in way low and by the time I get home at night I'm famished and binge then get upset with my self and blow it for the next day or 2. tomorrow is day 1 ...again for me. a new day to start fresh. I need to find a way to succeed. Thanks for giving me the forum to vent a bit and I read all posts from all the forums for tips.

I used the fiber at CVS pharmacy in the little individual packs that I added to water. It was gentle and it worked. That was the only one I tried. I did juice some celery, kale, cucumber, and apple before I could eat veggies to help with fiber as well. Just be careful and check with your surgeon to make sure it is okay for you. Now that I can eat salad, I don't need a fiber drink. You should have a food schedule, but I would check to make sure.

All the best,
Ilene

Does anyone have suggestions for a bypass-friendly fiber supplement? I have heard horror stories of some fiber products expanding in the stomach. I do like fiber as it helps me feel full, and now after surgery I am looking for the other... err.. digestive benefits.

Thanks!

Glad to hear you are doing well. What did the surgeon tell you was the reason for the change from RNY to Sleeve?

I am home now...just sore. No problems with drinking and protein drinks. Did end up with a sleeve instead of the RNY. I'm ok with it...God knows what is best for each of us. Thanks for checking on me and all the emails

Glad you came through surgery and are already making changes and up and walking! Keep up the great work and soon you will be under 500! Actually most of us gain while in the hospital on intervenous liquids! So you are doing even better than most of us to have lost weight! Good Job!

So all is said and done. Surgery went text book and I am now home. Definately a change in a few things. Im a little sore but not enough to need my pain meds they sent home. Im easing into drinking enough liquids and almost there. Went for a walk tonight and could tell a big differrence from when I was walking prior to surgery. I weighed in before surgery and had lost almost another 10 pounds so I had hit 545.

I have had the cold, wobbly, fuzzy feel as well. Nice to know that it is not an unexpected side effect of the weight loss.

Yesterday was a rough day. Traffice made me 4o minutes late to work. Then a co-worker brought Christmas cookies to SHARE. I was terrible I ate one in morning and one in afternoon. I still feel guilty about it and know it was an old habit rearing up and confronting me. No weight gain but I may see those cookies on the scale tomorrow!

How have you done this holiday season? Have you made it past the the stumbling blocks like holiday cookies?

It is true that I am colder now that I have lost 109 lbs. I usually don't need socks in San Diego even in the winter, but I am wearing sox with my crocs this year. I am wearing more sweaters and sweater vests, too. However, this day with the chills was quite unique, but it is a bug that is going around, according to some non-GBS friends. It's over now and that is good. I get plenty of nutrients with my protein drink breakfast and my veggie/fruit juice lunch, and hearty soup supper.

With rapid weight loss the metabolism and thyroid get overwhelmed and sometimes the body thermostat goes wonky and you get cold or hot. I have heard many people in my support group talk about being cold all the time or hot all the time or about sudden changes. It can also be a symptom of a nutrient imbalance so look at your food log and vitamin and supplement intake.

Ruthie: I had the same thing yesterday. The furnace was on, I was wrapped in two comforters, two afghans, and flannel sheets. I couldn't get warm until 2 pm. I was also wobbly when I stood up. No fever, no flu symptoms, just chills. Weird. Stayed home from work, mainly because I was unsure on my feet, slept all day. Today, I am fine except for a headache. Totally weird.

Hi all. Doing well most days. Had 2 days of s strange happening. I had total body chills. My whole body was shaking. I crawled into bed and wrapped myself in blankets. I never had a fever I drank tea and slept most of the day. The next day I felt better but slept all day. Today i was well enough to go to a Christmas party--pot luck and had a great time. The scale said 200.5 this am. Can't wait till it says 199.0.

Blessings to all this ///Christmas Season~

There is a weight loss surgery conference in Salt Lake City Utah Apr 20-21, 2012. Do a facebook search for " WLS Support for All".

This is the message Laura posted today.
We're headed to Utah to do a WLS conference for all the WLS Peeps there! Date is set for APril 20-21st for Salt Lake City. Any body in that area or do you know of anyone there that would be interested in attending

So if any of you live near there you may want to check it out!

Chrissy ---Soup - just thicken the broth a little with protein powder or arrowroot or if soup has beans or other legumes(kidney, pinto, black..) then take 1 cup of soup with veggies and other stuff and blend it and use that for a thickener. Then the soup will be thick enough not to wash the ingredients out of the pouch!

Steph good luck with the holiday the liquid prep before surgery is tough but you can do it. It is all worth it and makes your recovery go smoother.
Wolf I would like that pizza soup recipe if you could tell me where to find it. I like th e sounds of it. I know the y tell you not to have liquids with your food but sometime hot soup hits the spot

Hi everyone! Ive been mia for a little while only because employer took away access to sp. :( and at home life barely gives me time to get minutes from fitness. Wanted u all to know I'm doing great! On month four, down around 115 lbs. 54 before surg. Doing really well on eating and getting fluids in. So far no major problems. I only wish I had done this sooner. ;) I will be in touch more, got a new phone that's working well here on Sp. Hoping all is well with everyone. God bless.
