Are you still on pureed foods?

Refried beans or smashed black beans did wonders for me. I thinned my refried beans out with low sodium chicken broth. I had gotten to the point where nothing would appeal to me. I had lots of beans and protein shakes. I topped my beans with a little cheese and salsa. If I was really lucky I'd add fresh avocado. YUM.

I also had smashed hard boiled eggs or egg salad
Baked ricotta cheese w/ marinara
Mashed sweet potato
Mashed banana with Skippy Natural PB (I have found that the Skippy has the least amout of sugar)
Greek yogurt w/ PB2 (Powdered Peanut Butter)
Tuna or salmon (canned in water)

good luck to you!!

I enjoyed your post Steph! It reminded me of my early post surgery days. I love soup and still enjoy it more than most other dishes. I think you are right it is moisture level is what my body needs and can easily get from soup. Also, I still cannot eat apple skins, grape skins, or any other fruit skins! But I now love all kinds of fruit. Before surgery I did not eat much fruit. Now I love fruit with a little protein added for my snacks. I have to be careful about portions due to sugar content of fruit. I have found lots of things that I used to not like I now like but also many things I used to eat now do not taste that good.

I still have foods I cannot tolerate but I do routinely re-try most of those foods as my food tolerances can still change daily or weekly or not at all. So be open to always retry foods at least once a month!

Soup/broth is key to any meats. I actually don't eat much meat pureed really, I add it to "soup.' My favorite soup since surgery has been egg drop, mine has 'purred' bits of chicken and egg and I often will add unflavored or Unjury chicken soup protein powder to it for added boost. Be careful with canned soups, I still can't have a lot of things like rice and certain veggies that are in them no matter how much I try to puree them. Hope you pouch is more accepting of mine. My favorite part of moving to from the liquid stage was adding mashed banana and apple sauce. I was able to tolerate the fruit well so my doctor had me start trying raw fruit, like apples and peaches (without the skins), and my pouch takes it which is so awesome. I just take have to take tiny bites, chew a lot, and remember to only take a few bites. I have kids so I just snitch the littlest bit of their fruit.

I have to make my own refried beans as I have found that the store bought is just too salty tasting to me.

Two of my favorite go to foods! You can either eat at the restaurant or make your own at home.

Refried Fat Free Beans(I like black beans) top with some lowfat cheddar and non-fat greek yogurt. Add your favorite spices ( you may find that you need more spice in order to taste it). After abdominal surgery many peoples taste buds are kind of numb for up to a year or so after surgery. Just use a little extra on yours only! Ask your dietician when you can add some cooked salsa to it or some guacamole.

Another food is Wendy's Chili! I was able to eat this during the pureed stage even though it is not a puree. Ask your dietician if you can have it. Or bring it home and blend it.

I was also able to make my own soups and add plain protein powder or yogurt to bump up the protein. My favorite was a restaurant chicken tortilla soup (I had the tortilla chips on the side.) I blended the soup after adding lowfat sourcream or nonfat yogurt to make it creamier. I had some avocado in it too. I ate this for a number of months.

I also made my own protein pumpkin custard. I used a vanilla flavored protein powder. I used splenda instead of sugar. and fat free evaporated milk. It was great to have something that was not savory but was also not a liquid protein drink!

Check out any suggestions with your dietician or with a food list your surgeon or dietican gave you. Everyone's plans are different.

You will find that you enjoy each food stage.

I was also able to eat a poached egg in pureed stage which I also found strange as it was not pureed. I thought it was more a soft food but my dietician said no go ahead but take very tiny bites.
