Honestly Kourtney, the best thing you can do is video call. As often as you can. You're going to learn just how busy being a mom really is, now that you're back at work, and it's going to be hard to keep up with it.

But aside from being there, nothing beats opening my video app and seeing those smiles and hearing those sweet little voices talking to me. Ellie used to call me all by herself, and I'd hear from her at least 2 or 3 times a week. But her parents have limited her electronics time, so she does it only rarely anymore. Better for her, I know, but sucks for me.

Your mom will love it.

Kourtney, I think you should go for the promotion, especially if you feel confident in the work and can maintain those healthy boundaries!

I know it's been a crazy identity shift for me, though the not going to a cubicle every day feels so much truer to my self-identity, being a full time caregiver is HARD. Fulfilling, but very hard.

I took RJ down to my brother's yesterday so we could go out for a concert together. I was super anxious about it because the drive is kinda long and bedtime has not been kind for babysitters. But everyone did well, and I very much enjoyed my night out with my brother. Tomorrow is Randy's first father's day so he gets to call the day's activities :)

Hi! On the commute, I do what I feel like, so I listen to the radio, or I watch TV, or I stare out the window. I hardly ever see anything on TV at home, so it's fun to watch it on the bus. Sometimes I watch movies my hubby would never watch. I can't read on the bus, yet. I might get more used to it, we'll see. I don't work on the bus, although eventually maybe I can.

Yep, her first breakup and today they made it official. And I was at work. She's so sad.....and I'm not there to comfort her. That friend's advice is good, but sometimes impossible for me. I mean, I don't feel it nearly as much as she does, but I feel her pain and I know heartbreak, and it just makes me feel helpless. Which frankly I am, so.......it's an honest feeling.

Yes, next time if you are in town longer let's do lunch! I'm in a better part of midtown now. 38th between Fifth and Madison. It's so nice here!!!!

Trying to meet with boss then get outta here, but he's taking forever on something else. So, I'm jumping here for a minute to say hi, then back to some easy tasks because any minute I'm going to be interrupted and have to talk budgets. :)

Have a great weekend everyone!! Enjoy those babies!!!!

Heather -

Glad the new job is going well! RE commute - I’ve had an 1+ commute (each way) for the last 6 or so years. IMO, the biggest factor is how you spend it. Namely, NOT spending it doing tasks that aren’t fulfilling (scrolling through facebook, playing some games, etc). But I really relish the me-time, ESPECIALLY now that there’s a baby :D.

Are you able to leave a bit early and work a bit from the bus? If not, do you use the time as “you” time, doing things like reading or listening to a podcast (not just scrolling on facebook)? If not, I hope you can start b/c it’s been really fulfilling for me.

Oh random sidetone - I was in NYC yesterday (upper east side) but only for a customer onsite day trip :(. Next time I visit this customer hopefully I have more time so we can grab lunch again!

Is this Sydney’s first breakup? Poor thing. A friend once said something that’s stuck with me - that part of being a mother is being there to offer guidance and support, but not to suffer *with* them. Easier said than done, obviously, but it still really struck me.

Jen - my goodness he is adorable!

Carol - Glad you’re “retiring” soon :). Yes, help the friend when retired. No, do not help the random company w/warehousing - let them find someone who needs that job / would really relish that job. Focus on retirement! What kind of pool did you set up?

Laurie - Gosh she’s getting old! My eldest nephew is starting Kindergarten in the fall!!!

Out of curiosity, what are the things that your daughter does that are most helpful for you to feel close to the grandbabies? I know nothing compares to being there, but what things do help? I ask b/c I want to make sure I’m incorporating things like these for my mom.

oh hai!

There's still a lot to figure out about my own personal identity as a working mom, but that's just gonna take time.

I'm slowly but surely getting into a groove at work again. I no longer feel behind from being out for 3 months (although there *is* plenty of work I'm behind on lol). But I feel like I'm doing my work well and getting ish done. I'm glad that I spent a lot of time setting work hour boundaries over the past year, b/c they've been critical with getting home to the baby.

Reviews are coming up soon and I was planning to push for a promotion... but now I have a new boss (he started 2 weeks before my mat leave) and I don't feel like he knows me that well yet. Granted, he's explicitly said he's getting feedback from other people I've worked closely with to get a more full picture and, as I said above, I've been doing well. But yeah, I'm kinda spinning my wheels trying to decide if I'll push for a promotion... any advice, career ladies?!

I'm hoping to take the baby on a hike (with some other moms, from a meetup group) this weekend. She's doing great - getting close to rolling over and loving daycare. She needs to work on her aim, though.

I've been doing some GREAT reading. I just read Watchmen for the first time (so lovely! and pumped for the HBO show) and finished the most recent volume of Saga. Now I'm moving onto some novels :D.

xoxo

I will say I liked my Half Moon Bay commute experience the best...Step out of the house, walk 3.5 minutes looking at the ocean...and there's my office! Haha. I've never had that long of a commute, but I've always worked longer hours. My commute has been on average 25 minutes most of my life and my husband and I commuted together in my company car for about 25 years...so that wasn't really like commuting to me.

I rented a house up in the hills by Dodger Stadium for working on the software implementation project this week. It's really cute and walking these hills is a fantastic workout. We're having a heat wave here in California, but the evening wasn't too hot for walking. I booked the house through Friday night but hoped I might get done sooner. Yesterday morning was the first day live and it was a little rough and I was thinking...yep, Friday maybe Saturday, but by the afternoon the sales manager asked if I was coming back tomorrow... We'll see how this goes, but maybe I'll be out of here by Thursday!

I have my pool now and I haven't even been able to get to it! I can't wait to get back to my old routine...and I'm excited to have a new routine of not going to work every day! I want to work on my garden and build my bench! I had my family all paint the back of a clear glass bobble for my mosaic bench! Isn't that fun? I'll have to post pics on fb when I get a little further along.

I think the not driving part might make a bit of a difference for the positive. I always felt like like time in the car was just lost time that I couldn't do anything with.

Three! Kids sure do highlight the page of time. My oldest niece will be six in a couple months, it's hard to believe it

Yeah, I've had a commute like this, or almost like this, most of my working life. For a few years I had a shorter commute, but NYC commuting is always long. I love the bus because I can sleep, or watch TV or whatever and not drive. And on the weekend, when I am in my big house in the mountains, and I'm enjoying the country life, it's all worth it for me.

OMG Heather emoticon I could not do it. 4 to 5 hours just travelling back and forth to work? No way. I had enough trouble driving 30 to 40 minutes each way. But I'm glad you are finding this job to be great! You looked long enough and you sure deserve it!

Sorry to hear about Sydney and the boyfriend. But, you're right, it was probably inevitable and she'll need to cope with heartbreak at some point again probably, so at least she's learning.

Jen, the pics are adorable!

Carol, you're never going to retire. You like what you do too much. It's a nice problem to have. emoticon

I'm plugging away. Work is.... work. Something new every day.

I'm busy trying to plan my next trip to see the grandbabies at the end of September. It will be Ellie's THIRD birthday. I can't believe she's almost 3 already. I feel like I'm missing so much! Thankfully, there's video chat!

Are you sitting down? My commute is at best 2 hours and often 2.5 hours each way. Yes, each way. I live in a rural county and there are no jobs for me there, believe me, I've tried to find one. In order to get even close to the salary I want, I have to drive an hour out of the county to a much more populated part of the state. But I really wanted to work in mid-town. And so, I drive to the bus station then take a bus into Port Authority then I walk 17 minutes across town to my office. Frankly, I'm giddy working in Manhattan again. The location is amazing and the pay is completely worth it. I am by far not the only person in this region that commutes that far. It's pretty normal, hence all of the public transportation options.

How long is your commute, Heather? I really look forward to not having any commute soon! Although mine is not bad right now...25 minutes by car, if there's no traffic.

I'm setting up a computer and finance system for one of my friends in agriculture. I'll do his monthly close each month to make sure he doesn't go sideways...so not completely retired after this month...and another company wants me to set up a warehousing program and find the best CRM software...

Jen - LOVE the pics!!!

Good morning! I'm glad you're setting into the new job well, I hope it continues :)

Poor Sydney, it's certainly an unavoidable part of life and I hope she bounces back soon.

And I broke out the computer for pictures!

Good Morning everyone!!! It's the start of week 4 at my new job, and I'm starting to hit a good stride. I really think I finally found the right place to work.

We had a nice weekend, at least hubby and I did. Sydney is having relationship issues, so it looks like she and the boyfriend are breaking up. She's heartbroken and of course there's not a thing I can do for her but be there and listen. Heartbreak is part of life and of course she wasn't going to marry this guy, so a breakup was going to happen eventually, but watching her go through this is painful. It's hard being a mama!!

On the workout front, I'm still trying to figure out how this schedule is going to go with the job and the super long commute, so for now I'm using the long walk to and from the bus station as my workout. It's working, because I'm slowly toning up more!

Have a FUN and ACTIVE day and week!!
