Oh, and I agree about the twinkly lights! I'm putting up solar ones in our trees and I got silver paper stars with twinkly lights to put up in our gazebo!

Yes Heather, send something out. I did that with construction company's and picked up three immediately, then the referrals that came later actually made me too busy with the new company set-ups and troubleshooting. Haha...so it was definitely effective for me. One of the things I did was find the owner/president/main person and put their name on the envelope and addressed the letter to them. That way it had a better chance of getting through the receptionist (or whoever was in charge of opening the mail).

Not only have I had a lot of referrals from non-profits, but a lot of them have also been because of embezzlement - sigh.

I finished the jewelry and ornaments for my best friend's giving-tree at work. It's like an advent calendar but with 6 - 10 gifts that can be hung on the tree, then her teachers and whoever can come by and choose something. It keeps the festive mood going for the month.

After all the back and forth plans for Thanksgiving...we're ending up with having it here! We were going to Valley of Fire in NV, but it's supposed to rain and lightning...which also means flash floods... That means we HAVE to finish or storage building so that we can stay in there since there will be six people plus us in our tiny house. I really need to get the art studio done, then nothing would be an issue. We'll get there. Yesterday we put in a ten-hour day putting up drywall (the fire retardant, super heavy type) and mudded, taped, and sanded. I just finished the second mudding and now once it dries I can sand and paint and be DONE!

But first, we're going to our favorite lodge in Cambria for two nights with our kayaks! Which means I need to get off of here and get a move on!

I'll post pictures of my tree when I have a minute, so you can see the ornaments my daughter and I made for our tree. So fun!

Oh twinkly lights :) they do make the dark nights a bit easier for sure!

I think the letter mailing would be a good marketing idea, certainly can't hurt and depending on how you put it together doesn't require too much investment.

I have a cold and I just want it to hurry up and go away! It is going away quickly, but I have dinner prep to do so I'm all the more impatient with it. My mom came over yesterday so I could get a little bit done while she took RJ to play at least.

Hi all! First of all, on my walk today I went to Bryant Park and they have this amazing winter village. There must be 100 small artisan vendors selling locally made stuff. Found a few candle folks. Found a glass container votive, soy wax and pine scented (which honestly was so subtle I couldn't smell it). And guess how much they sell it for?? $12!!! We sell the same thing for $3 and feel like we are charging too much! Of course, we're not in Manhattan, but wow!! Literally the cost of materials is like 75 cents for that candle. To be fair, it comes in a very nice box which we don't do. But would you pay $12 for a votive candle, even if they tell you it will burn for 20 hours (which I honestly have trouble believing it will). Also I looked up the company and they sell all over the country, so not actually really artisan if you ask me.

I'll be going back to browse because I only got to see a small part of it, and it's there through January. There's a free ice skating rink too! You have to schedule in advance, but it's the only free rink in the city. The famous one at Rockefeller Center is anywhere from $60 - $175 per hour and a half including skate rentals. So, free is pretty cool!!

Also, I don't think I mentioned that I got a referral from my one non-profit client to another non-profit that needs help. It seems that a lot of small non-profits hire people who call themselves bookkeepers, but who really don't know much of what they are doing. Then, they need help to fix what the bookkeeper didn't do. Well, here I am! I met with them Tuesday night and I just sent my proposal over to them now.

If I could get 8 more clients like this, for a total of 10, I could work maybe 20 hours a week, locally, and make pretty much what I make in the city. Maybe this is the way to get to working for myself. Stop trying to help start-up tiny local businesses who can't pay and don't get the value of actual accounting help, and look for established non-profits who are ready for better accounting help and help them while also making a living wage. It's not that I dislike my job, I actually like it. But it could be a transition plan for retirement! :)

What do you think if I wrote up an introductory letter with my services and sent to all the non-profits I can find within an hour of my house? Maybe include a quote about how great I am from the folks I'm working with now? Thoughts?

Carol, my husband had to tell me the sun was out because in the dungeon of an office I work in, at my stupid cubicle, there's no way to see if it's sunny or cloudy. But, the nice thing about the city is how light it is all the time when the sun goes down. It lifts my spirits to walk past twinkly lights on my way to the bus!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Hi Laurie! If she does it next year, let me know and I'll donate ornaments! I've done trees and wreaths for non-profits. Adorable picture! Once we get a tree and get it decorated, I'll take pictures of the ornaments my daughter and I made this year with silver and crystals. It was fun! I know Christmas is not your favorite, but I hope it's more fun with the babies!

Heather - Yes, that's exactly why I started doing the ornaments because jewelry sometimes gets cut at shows. But I also use the ornaments to just bring people in. It's Christmas and the ornaments tend to catch their eyes.

At 3 pm at my house, it looks like the sun has set because we're on a hill, but not at the top. By 6 pm I feel like it's bedtime! I really dislike the light at this time of year! Plus, today we've had our first cold night - 40 some degrees! Now, I know for you guys that's wimpy, but next week it's supposed to get down in the mid-30s and when you are used to being barefoot in the house with no heater running for about 50 weeks out of the year, those couple of cold weeks feel brutal!

It's only going to get up to the low 60s today, so for exercise, I'm going to work on the grove of oak trees above us and saw a bunch of dead branches. It's a lot of work, but a great work out. I have a saw with two extension poles and with all three attached it's both aerobic and a strength exercise. We'll put up some more wallboard and hopefully I'll be able to start taping and mudding today!

Laurie, I hear you - I don't think I ever really noticed how early it gets dark being indoors... But on the other hand I'm getting way more sunlight than I did being in windowless buildings.

Of course, today I've started feeling the creeping sore throat of an oncoming head cold. Hopefully it passes quickly!

Carol, for a long time I just sold our 4 inch container candles at a very good price, but still it was too much for some people. So, we started selling small lidded candles at half the price of the large candles. They aren't quite half the size, a bit smaller, but I definitely can get that $8 sale when it would have been nothing if I hadn't had the smaller ones.

We have very seasonal scents, so this time of year pumpkin spice, frosted pine and winter spice sell like crazy. Some fairs I go to are very specific in what I can sell, and since there are so many jewelers, it's harder to get in with jewelry. However, the ornaments will be great!! I can see people mixing and matching as well.

Love the pictures Laurie!! Hang in there, this time of year can be tough with the dark.

A lawyer friend of mine decided to get a group together to donate a tree to one of our big local Christmas tree festivals. These trees are displayed and sold to benefit Akron Children's Hospital. It's a big deal. They are over there decorating today and tomorrow. I donated some ornaments but I'm not sure what else I'll do. You all have heard me say for years I'm not a Christmas person. But I still wish her fun and happiness. She got a lot of good response so I'm sure it will be beautiful. www.akronchildrens.org/pages

Post some pictures of Carol's ornaments!

I'm still hanging in there, but still struggling a bit. The time change did a number on me this year. I'm having a very hard time feeling like midnight is now arriving at 6 pm. All I want to do is hibernate. My diet is hit or miss and I'm not getting any exercise at all. Thankfully I have access to lots of natural light during the daylight hours, which is very helpful.

Anyway... I'm here... just lurking more than posting.

Well, that price point works also since they are (mostly) in sets of 6. You'll just have to see what your area is like. You are welcome. I just wanted you to see how easy earrings are too.I've just found, over the years, that if you're doing holiday craft fairs that you get more people in if you have some decidedly Christmas wares. I especially find it generates sales if they come in for something expensive and decide it's too much, they often buy something like the ornaments.

I meant to say thank you for the beautiful earrings!! We love them!!!

We were thinking $4 each, or three for $10, but your pricing is good too and likely would be fine where we are.

I'll definitely track the sales!!

BTW - The earrings were for you and Sydney (if they are your style). I usually sell the ornaments for $5 or 6 for $25, but do whatever is appropriate for your neck of the woods.

If you would, will you feedback (assuming they sell) what age range buys which type? That will help me next year when I do some shows. Thanks!

That's a pretty high bar for walking at lunch! I am so spoiled! Cheers to you!

We're working hard on our storage building today. I stapled all of the insulation in and painted/sealed as much of the floor as I had paint for. We're going to make an IKEA run and stop by his dad's house for the last time!

Good Morning!!! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend!

The ornaments Carol made for me to sell at my craft fairs arrived and they are stunning. I just sat on Friday evening after I got home and slowly opened all of the bags they came in to admire all of them. We ordered a tree ornament stand to display them and I know they will make the booth look festive! Hopefully we sell a bunch of them as well! I have three shows over the next three weekends and I'm really looking forward to them.

Work is a bit demanding this week, but next week will be light as it's the holiday week, so it all will balance out.

I continue to watch my food intake and walk as much as possible. If it's at all decent, I go out most days at lunch to get out of the office and stretch my legs. As long as it's not actively raining or below 20, I go!

Have a FUN and ACTIVE week!!!
