After reading all the detailed rules in the faqs, I’m going to have to withdraw from this challenge this time. There’s just a bit much for me to keep track of at this point in time.i hope this email gets to the right person. I can’t remember exactly where I was supposed to post this.

Well I am in the middle of planning a 6 week visit to Texas (flying from the Philippines). Not sure if my wife can get a travel visa or not... Embassy appointment next week... I have to go, with or without her.

I am sure this trip will be in the middle of the challenge. I will have to watch those TX food portions ha ha! That is where I got fat in the first place. I miss Tex-Mex and Italian. Both are terrible for weight loss. Gonna be a tough one. But I get to meet my 2 grand kids finally (have not been back to the old country since 2014).

Good Morning, All!!! Wanted to check in here ~ and to welcome everyone to the 2018 Fall 5% Challenge Community!!! Start date is yet to be announced, but rest assured, your leaders are working hard to get all of the pieces put into place so that we can all enjoy a wonderful and successful Challenge.

Don't know where you all are (I know that the Challenge reaches many countries), but here in Western NJ, although it has been quite hot and rainy is relatively comfortable today (cooler, and humidity is not awful). I've noticed, however, leaves are already turning and falling). Seems a little early for all of this ~ but I guess that Fall really is right around the corner. Labor Day (in the US) signifies the end of Summer ~ I guess Mother Nature is just following the holiday and is flipping the switch to autumn already.

Hope that everyone is well and getting excited for the next Challenge!

emoticon Down another 3.4 lbs in a week. Had to go buy some new clothes today. Everything getting too big very quickly. Yeah!

Got my colonoscopy + biopsy completed. Boy the prep was yucky & hard to get down, but did it. This was my 3rd or 4th colonoscopy in several years. Will get biopsy results in about a week.

Saw the head of Endocrinology Friday. She took biopsies of both nodules on the right thyroid lobe. Results in about a week. I do have to see the ENT Surgeon to schedule a left thyroidectomy soon. My left lower massive nodule is pressing my trachea to the right. If the biopsy right nodule results come back malignant, entire thyroid will need to be removed. Trusting God that all will be within His control and I will be fine.

Next appointment is to have an ultrasound on my eyes and have them measured for cataract removal with lens implants in October.

Walked with DH tonight. Lovely time spent together.

Blessings, Bev

MaryAlice - We have a pool and I used it during the warm months but it doesn't seem to alleviate the pain. Sometimes makes it worse...especially when I walk in it. I think maybe I need to do something like someone mentioned with the deep water workout? Something where I'm not pounding my feet. I'm going to look into that at our local college as well. Thanks!!

Just get moving!

Layed back day today hubby has caretaker for 9 hours. For those who don't know he fall in the summer of 2016 and broke his neck. He is now a functioning quadriplegic slowly regaining limited use of his arms and legs.

I love taking walks and walk 6 days a week for about one hour. I live in the city and have many safe areas to walk in.

Debbie, is a pool available to you? The water will take most to the weight off the part of your body in the water. The more of your body in the water the better. You can swim, walk, do water aerobics, or a combination of them. I find it helps

Hello everyone! Reading all the successes and struggles is motivating to me. I've been on a continuous weight gain for about 10 years. I've gotten hold of it and maintained 180ish for the past year but I am having a difficult time losing. I am in a pain from my hips down most days. Sitting hurts, standing hurts, walking hurts but I push through my walk with my dog every morning and I'm going to an osteopath to help figure it out. My goals are to get a 30 minute walk in every day and and additional 30 minutes of cardio or strength training 5 days a week. I saw someone mention tai chi for pain so I'm going to look into that now too.

Just get moving!

@CHANGING-TURTLE Glad to be back. I took a 2 month diet break that accidentally became almost a year ha ha. I maintained pretty well until I was hospitalized (crazy jungle infection, and bell's palsy). I had a month of overly medicated recuperation and got out of the daily exercise habit. I may have somehow put on 10 pounds (all in my neck & cheeks?). On the plus side I have something I hope to lose in this challenge...

@CONTROUBLE I must have done it wrong... I quit working at 48 and moved to the Philippines. Been here almost 6 years and finally get to retire in Feb 2019! I am from Dallas and we had some great cons... I do miss the camaraderie at the cons and Ren fairs... but not working is as good as I always knew it would be.

Hi kids (5%ers) ...
Well my colonoscopy went off yesterday without a hitch. No endoscopy needed, doctor was able to get the additional biopsy and remove two polyps which have been sent to pathology and I’ll have the results in a week. I slept like a baby through the hole party. emoticon

Saw the head of Endocrinology this morning regarding the two nodules (huge & massive...doc said she’d never seen one that big in all her years of practice) on my left thyroid lobe. I told her I was born in Texas and we do things Big there. emoticon Neglected to add that I was raised in California. (giggle) She elected Not to do a 2nd biopsy of the massive node which is pushing my trachea to the right. The node is sooooo large that it will have to be removed whether it’s malignant or benign anyway. However, she did biopsy the 2 smaller nodules on my right thyroid lobe. (I also have one in the middle but it’s not problematic.) 3 needles in each node and off to the pathologist they’ve gone. I’ll know in a week for them too (malignant or benign). If either of them are malignant it will necessitate that my entire thyroid be removed. It’s all in God’s Control. No worries.

Cece ~ Thank you for the encouraging words regarding my husband’s great leukemia report. I’m praising the Lord with you for your daughter’s oncology progress. Wow!, brain cancer. That must have been sooooo scary. How excited and thankful you must be now! Truly a blessing from on High. We rightly place our hope & faith in the Great Physician.

Della ~ Prayers going up for a great upcoming cardiology report. Congrats on going without glasses now! How terrific is that!!! WhooHoo!!! I’m having both cataract removal & upgraded lens implant surgeries 10/02 right eye & 10/16 left eye. We’ll both be running around eye glassless. lol. I understand that following the surgeries you not only see better but see color more vividly. Can hard wait. Congrats to you again. BTW, how long did your recovery time take post surgery?

SS2 ~ My DH wants me to get FitBits for each of us. Is there an advantage to getting the FitBit2? I may need some coaching. lol Have you used FitBit before?

Cindy, I've had cats most of my 65 years. I had some that wouldn't use a litter box. I changed to a non clumping litter and that worked. I did have one that still had a problem. I ended up with shared newspaper then slow added the no clipping litter. I know non clumping litter makes cleaning harder, but not as hard as the cat not using the box at all

My second cataract is done! I can now go with out glasses—first time since grade school. I will need reading glasses so not bad at all.

I go see my cardiologist in a couple hours so am praying everything is A-Ok! Then I hope all will be healthy for work starting Tuesday.

God has been good to me getting all this done before I go back to work.

Good afternoon everyone. Well's it's afternoon here in Ohio anyway. It's so muggy today. I am following a body type workout from Jessica Smith. She's young, but i've been following her for the last few years, off and on I should say. Most of the time I follow Leslie Sansone.

Mary Alice...Yes, you're right, my job was stressful sometimes, but I love it. When we merged with the crisis team in a different county, I knew I was going to be leaving. I would've had to drive and hour there and an hour back home. That's just to far for me, especially after dark. I kept my job as the sexual assault advocate for a few years but then decided I had enough. Nowadays, I travel a lot. 3 of my children live out of state so I go visit them 2-3 times a year.

Bev...I just read your post about your husband...PTL!! I can rejoice with you! My daughter is a cancer survivor as well. She had brain cancer. She has some issues left over from the surgery itself, but is otherwise healthy. God truly showed off His healing skills. We have a great deal to be thankful for. I know your day to day struggles can be a challenge, i'm sure. God works all things out for our good and His glory. Let's see how he works things out for your husband.

I had better get going. We found a very tiny kitten in our garage about a month ago. She has had some health issues we are taking care of. Her name is Whitney. Time to clean up behind her..ick!! She will not potty in her box. I don't know if it's the kitty littler itself or what is going on with her. She is high maintenance though. worth it!

Hi Kathryn, I still have the 2nd colon prep to take in 45 min. Ugh. You are right that the worst part. When I took the 1st part this morning, I felt nauseated, super bloated, and had chills. The 2nd part is worse cuz you know what coming. emoticon This is probably my 3rd or 4th procedure over the years.

I’m so sorry to hear of your hubby’s fall. Rejoicing with you that he is beginning to show signs of improvement. That’s gotta be rough for him. You are a loving wife to take such good care of him. He must adore you. emoticon

Well, I’ve already started my colon prep protocol bright & early at 5:00am. Next is the real challenge, drinking the first of two disgusting Suprep. emoticon emoticon I will live through it. And it’s proven to be a life-saving procedure. I’m looking forward to hearing the results of the colonoscopy & endoscopy. I’ll probably be busy for the next several hours ... if you catch my drift. emoticon

MaryAlice - Thank you for the prayers today. emoticon It’s my husband that has leukemia emoticon We started dating when we were 16 yrs old & married at 19 yrs old. This December we celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. He’s a great guy & sooo supportive of me. Thanx for the WhooHoo on his s behalf.

Hello everyone. I just now found this board. I'm doing the fall fitness challenge. I retired 3 month's ago. I worked on a crisis line & worked as a sexual assault advocate. I have some health issues that I manage with exercise. I've been on spark people for many years but never really bothered much with message boards. I am active in one particular board. Otherwise, I use SO to keep myself motivated. I need to about 5-7 lbs. My clothes are getting a bit tight. Hopefully we can encourage each other & stay motivated.

The love of my life since 16 y/o saw his leukemia oncologist today. Great news! He’s 99.99991% cancer free. He’ll still have to remain on chemo drugs for life, but they may change to generic the end of November. 🙏

Tomorrow is my colonoscopy/endoscopy. Doctor will be checking for a rare colon disease...found rare white blood cells in me. Get to wake up and get started on colon prep at 5am in the morning. Let the fun begin. emoticon

When my hubby was in the hospital this last time the staff was so good to him. He was in for C-Diff. Not fun when you can't walk and are in diapers. The hospital had a policy no diapers when in bed. The staff had a mess to clean up every time they turned around. They keep him there for 3 days and sent him home. I ended up getting C-Diff.

My husband and I work the night shift at a huge busy hospital-I work on the Cardiac floor where I do patient care, draw blood and do EKGs. I wear a pedometer so I can track my steps out of being curious. I track between 8,000- 10, 000 steps a night.

We sleep during the daytime, and so we are backwards. We find that if we stay up anywhere near 10am or over we get sick and do not feel right. We have worked these same hours for the past 35 years.

I love taking the deep water hydrofit Classes. It gets me breathing hard and it really works the muscles! I took the shallow water exercises and that was ok but hurt my knees so decided to stick with the deep water and this is from a person that can’t swim and is afraid of water! I can’t go back until mid Sept. because of my cataract surgery so really counting the days. It is also a great way to meet people that are working on becoming healthier just like you.

Filling jugs with filtered water this morning. I keep a few on hand just in case. We use them for cooking throughout the week. I seem to be always filling them Lol.
Exercise class today we are doing hula dance again. I love the music. I love Hawaiian music and I've always wanted to go to the islands but not right now.. Sad the weather they are having.

We have wet water so every time the elect goes out we loss loss water. Normal is to keep 3, 3 gallon jugs, but hurricane season it is 5, 3 gallon jugs and a 5 gallon jug. Here in Texas we have been under a high out of the runner and that keeps the storms away, but our 2 TS that caused so much damage were both the end of August and the big storms in September.

Hi, emoticon

I will chime in too about exercising in the pool.

Many years ago I had a terrible back condition. Bugling disks and slipping backbones, then was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis ( a joint and organ destroying type of arthritis). I ended up not working again in nursing after 30 blissful years. My mom took sick and I ended up taking care of her until she passed on. Naturally I neglected myself entirely.

I had never been overweight until my back went bad. You know how the story goes.

Long story short 10 years later ,my back was "normal" no bulging disks, RA under control. I owe it all the starting to walk slowly in the pool. That's how I started. Within six months I became a lap swimmer. I got certified as a life guard and became a "Learn to Swim " instructor for the kiddies. Tai Chi is my staple. It has helped me beyond belief. It was recommended my physical therapist. After that it was up and down, but mostly up!

Last two years I've had a health set back, but I have stuck with the program My back needs work, and have had to start all over with my rehab. I figure it'll take two years and I'll have my normal back again. I'm on the upswing again, thank the Lord and thanks for SP and the 5%.

I owe a lot to you guys and I'm here for you any time you would like to stop by and say hello.

At this point I'm two licks from maintenance. Yes, it took me years and years, but I am so much healthier and so much happier. All that pain and suffering huffing and puffing was and is so worth it!. I became a loser, no winner! Lol

SP is so very worth it. I cannot imagine life without it. Most of my support came from always logging here on a daily basis, even if it was just to lurk (that was how I started in the beginning).

5% is a blessed place. First round I felt like an outsider and didn't lose a pound, but my motto is "Never Give Up" This is my third time and I'm so looking forward to heading to the beginning of a new lifestyle. Maintenance! Some say it's daunting. I say "go for it!"

We all have common goals, we all are here to fulfill our dreams. We may have lived different lives and we may look different, but on the inside we have the same human emotions. We are all the same, built from the heavens and will travel the journey together. That's my view.
emoticon

Very nice to meet everyone!

Carla, the pool is a great way to get exercise and I don't mean just swimming laps. Thats good but some people find it boring or too many people in the pool. Try walking or jogging in the pool. Also most of your exercises can be done in the pool. One you won't notice you are sweating and to the water resistance will make it that much better a workout. I lived in FL 30 years, not much into the pool, but at the beach. I think I almost lived there.

Hi, just wanted to pop in to say hi. I can't wait for the fall challenge to start. I am ready for summer to be over, but that will be awhile, our fall doesn't come until like november or so, or according to my hubby, january or february, but he is from MD. I am a native floridian, so anything below 70, i usually have to have a jacket or long sleeves on, ha ha.

i did my first challenge over the summer and it didn't go well. so i am really ready to kick it during the fall. i said no excuses for going to the gym tonight and i went home, but my hubby & i are going to eat dinner and go to the pool for a little while, doesn't look like rain or storm, so we can get a little while in at the pool.

just wanted to say hi!

I just thought I would pipe in too about this challenge being amazing! I joined Sparkpeople in May of 2016 and the 5% challenges was one of the first groups I joined. I started with the Shooting Stars team and stayed with them.

I also have health issues and went from a wheelchair to walking a 5K with the support of the Shooting Stars. I have had a few health setbacks since then but I am still working on getting back to a 5K again. I could never have gotten as far as I have without the support of this group.
I am a forever 5% challenger and a Shooting Star for life!!

Come on Fall Challenge!! I am ready to get this party started!

Keep Sparkling!

@NEWNAN18 - SF/F cons are Science Fiction/Fantasy conventions . All volunteer run. It's a hobby - you know, a hole in my time I throw money into,
As for being retired, no. I'm 61 so I have another 5.5 years to go. I decided that my health is important and SP is a priority - the accountability helps me stay on track with that.
