LOL! There didn't use to be a "proper" way to do it! Things change so quickly over the decades now! Apparently the folks who make those changes don't think to tell anyone. Gotta figure them out in the school of knocks. I hate that discovery...but in the long run, it helps.

I did not know that there was a "proper" way to stand on a digital scale. And yes...I have noticed that if I weigh myself a few times in a row that it is different by as much at 5-7 pounds. I do not have a see through one so I will have to research the best way to stand on mine. Mine is an old weight watchers one, I think about 15+ years old so I may never find the proper stance for it but I will try. Thanks for the info.

Okay now those new "digital" scales with fancy stuff--I have a bit of a sad experience to share about it! So these digital scales have an under belly structure. I found a clear/see thru one as an example (they say a picture is worth 1000 words)

I have weighed myself a dozen different ways and found the results different on the SAME digital scale. When I investigated to find out why, after all weighing at the same time and on the same scale should NOT produce different results. Right? What I found out is see those under belly parts? Well I was standing on the scale wrong and wasn't getting consistent results. Been into Dance and I still stand with my heels together and toes spread out wide on the scale. I actually had to train myself to PUT my heals over those round underbelly parts and toes in line with the underbelly parts to get an accurate reading.

I didn't know this! I also couldn't believe the manufacturer just assumed everyone with a digital scale would do this or know this. Once I figured it out, which by the way in my case was as much as a 25 pound difference!!!! ....well I tested home against the doctor's office or the higi.com scale. Guess what? They all agreed.

Don't know if this accounts for the difference(s) between your mechanical scale and the newer digital ones--but it could be a part of the picture. But it could also be the mechanism in your old scale is busted. No worries though, it will sort its self out and will be consistent to itself.

Best wishes in seeing the numbers you desire--soon.

Thanks, guys. I know I shouldn't be letting the scale rule. Easier said than done for me, though..

The newer scales have a tendency to weigh us in at higher numbers. Do I see a conspiracy????

I agree with what is being said....you lose inches first. A number is just a number, the truth is in how you feel and if you are healthy.

Hang in there, the number will go down again.

What I've noticed though is that you start losing inches before you actually see a difference on the sacle. I was 5 lbs heavier yesterday late afternoon then I was on May 20th, I expect it was the fact that it was end of day and I had eaten breakfast and lunch nothing was completely digested yet - but who knows!

I have a tendency to get upset by the scale numbers also. When I think I did well but those numbers dont show it. It's frustrating.
But I am trying not to let it control me.
I feel healthier , my blood pressure is much better, i have more energy, I'm a more positive person now, my clothes fit better .
So i try to focus on these NSV instead

I finally decided to replace my 30 year old mechanical dial-type scale. My fancy new scale with sensors arrived today. I weighed myself on both scales side-by-side. The new scale shows 8 extra pounds! I'm sure it's right - I tested it with some hand-weights. A little depressing...
