Good Morning Everyone -

Allie - Thanks for asking. Our son-in-law seems to be improving. My daughter says he's getting really frustrated now not being able to recall words he wants to use. As an elderly person who has this to be more and more common for me, I know how frustrating such is. Not comparing my problems to his since his are much more severe, but just saying I've experienced such enough to know how frustrating it can be. However, the fact that he's to the point of getting frustrated tells me he's improving.

I'm not sure what kind of inserts you are wearing. My orthotics make my shoes more comfortable not less. Of course I'm a person who prefers not wearing shoes, so I find it hard to have to wear shoes all the time. I do so hope your foot pain goes away soon. I'm remembering you saw an orthopedist about your foot problems. Have you considered seeing a podiatrist about them? They only deal with feet.

Our lawn has high and low spots, not holes like PB dug, and if I must walk in it any longer I am extremely careful and try not to do so without my cane. Like you one day I fell, didn't have my cell with me, and as said many times, I can't get up from the ground any longer. I crawled to the wall where our shrubs are and pushed myself up. No I wasn't hurt (our grass is thick and soft), I just hoped and prayed the neighbors didn't see all of that.

I hope you make it to the pool today and that your feet are feeling better.

Have a great day everyone. I think I'm going to have to make a run to the grocery today, and my son said he was coming by too. Busy day.

Good evening team:

Shirley: Thanks for the cute puppy picture. I hope you sil is doing better.

I haven't been to the Y since last Sat. I really miss exercising. I have to take it easy and try to get my walking and pain under control.

The inserts are helping but I can only wear them for a few hours a day.

Grace: I bought several bags of top soil and filled in all the holes in my back yard. PB is still digging but I put vinegar in the holes and she doesn't like that. I know I don't want to fall again.

I did get quite a few errands done today and that made me feel better.

I might try to go to the pool early tomorrow morning. I will have to see how my feet feel in the morning.

I hope everyone has a good evening.

Good Morning Everyone -

We had a most enjoyable visit and Mexican dinner with our son and his family last night. The owner even came over with his guitar and sung a Mexican happy birthday to our daughter-in-law.

Irene - I'm so sorry to hear you are still feeling badly. You are doing the right thing to rest as much as possible. We've had those coughs to hang on for a month or better, but I'm hoping yours won't last so long. Since it is hampering your sleep you may want to tell your doctor about this, and he/she can prescribe something to ease that cough so you can get some rest.

Miller - thank you. I did sleep better last night. I never sleep well, but I do have my better nights as well as not so good nights too.

Make today a happy and healthy one -

Shirley

Hello on Tuesday , I was optimistic saying my cough was easing, , I have had a couple of bad days with it. Yesterday I didnít get dressed and thatís most unusual for me, I had t the energy to do anything, prolonged bouts of coughing in the night wore me out ,
I feel I am a cough now not me ! It takes me over and drains any energy. I have set my target to be fit for Friday .i am cancelling everything else this week. I have done little or no exercise this week and my eating is erratic but it will not last for ever .
Thank you for good wishes and goodies, I appreciate them.

Hello to all.

ELLEN, thank you for sharing your knee replacement wisdom with me. It makes me feel better to think I can take steps to reduce infection risks. *I hope youíre having fun on your trip!

ALLIE, I hope you find a way to fill in the holes. Falling is so scary!

IRENE, Iím glad to hear your coughing is easing a little.

SHIRLEY, I hope you get a good nightís rest.

I did some emotional eating today, but will try to do better. A friend on another team says she has started listening to music and coloring in her adult coloring book when she feels scared and stressed. I thought that was a good idea.

I hope everyone has a good week. emoticon

Good Afternoon Everyone -

I've finished doing laundry and am about to shut down. Since all of you visit "General Chat" I refer you to my post there.

Ellen - it isn't my daughter who is a who is a Speech/language Pathologist but my granddaughter - my daughter's and son-in-law's daughter. My daughter is a Master's degree RN, and hospital Director retired. In retirement she is teaching Nursing Administration for the University of Texas.

Have a good evening everyone and sleep well.

Hello on Sunday , Ellen that was suprising advice re knee replavements , nothing like this was available when I had mine. I must have done something right as I had no infections.i donít have pets and I did what I was told to do.
Apart from bad bouts of coughing in the night I feel my cough is easing a little .i supervised Mikeís gardening yesterday. I am a good supervisor . This morning I want to go fresh food shopping, itís my last chance to be taken by car . Mike had twelve hour days mid week too and from his job. He goes to se his own kids next weekend .
But I have two freezers and a fridge I keep them all well stocked so I can cope. .i do walk to the local food store if I need anything but they have limited stocks but I can get basics there .
Have a good Sunday. Irene

ALLIE, I'm so glad you didn't get badly hurt when you stepped PB's hole. I'll bet your GSs wouldn't mind filling in the holes to keep their Grammie safe. If you can't find a free source of dirt, the big box stores sell "top soil" real cheap but the bags usually weigh 40 lbs

Good evening team:

I went to the Y this morning. I went real slow. I wanted to see how much I could do today. i managed to do 15 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes on some upper body exercises. I used the punching bag a little bit, I am getting better at it.

It was just nice visiting talking to everyone. I went home and walked in the driveway for 15 minutes then I was done exercising for the day.

I have new inserts to wear with my new high tops. I need to adjust to both gradually.

I fell in the back yard a couple days ago. PB likes to dig holes and that is what made me fall. I was alright but it really scared me.

I need to find a way to get some dirt and fill up all those holes. I don't need anymore problems.

I hope everyone has a nice evening.

A great Saturday afternoon to all! We are waiting for thunderstorms to arrive (forecast was last night, this morning, and now this afternoon.) Haha!
My DH and I are getting ready to take off to visit my soon to be 98 year old mother! We will leave tomorrow, spend the night in Oklahoma City and then on to Lubbock. We use to make the 725 mile trip in one day, but not anymore. We will be returning on next Saturday so my posts might be much lighter since we are staying with my widowed sister and there is lots of talking!

Miller- if and when you have knee replacements, the important thing is to follow to the letter exactly what your doctors and nurses tell you to do. Most people who have problems did not follow everything the health professionals told them. Also, I think many people who have animals in the house have infections. What they told me was DONíT let your pets on your bed or even in the bedroom. I had to wash my sheets right before the last night, take a shower two days before the operation using a special soap, and no dental work two weeks prior and at least six weeks after. Also, for the rest of your life you will have to take an antibiotic before teeth cleaning. Just be sure and tell your dentist office that you are having knee replacements and they will ask you before you come in if you took it.

Shirley- that is great news about your SIL! My cousin had a stroke (not a really bad one) and the last I heard he is doing fine. To me a stroke would be SO scary! What a crazy thing that your daughter is a speech pathologist and now your SIL will need one.

Irene= I hope your cough problems get better soon. I have had some of my worst colds during the fall or spring. My mother always said it was the change in weather.

Hello to all.

ELLEN, yes, I hope my foot will be all better in a few months. And I hope and pray I will be brave enough to have knee surgery. You should hear some of the posts on the TKR Facebook group - they are horrifying. Severe and long-lasting infections, multiple replacements... even an amputation.

IRENE, I hope your cough soon goes away and you can get a restful night's sleep.

SHIRLEY, it's so good to hear your SIL is progressing well. I do hope having a daughter who is a speech and language pathologist will help him with his speech and auditory issues. It sounds like her experience with stroke victims will be very valuable.

I hope everyone is having a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Good Morning Everyone -

Thank you all for your prayers for my son-in-law and they seem to be working. I hadn't thought I'd told this team, but from a couple of posts, guess I had. He has now been moved from ICU to the Stroke Unit. Chris sent a video of he and the nurse walking down the hall. He was walking cautiously but well which is encouraging. I have no idea at this point about the usage of his hands, although Chris says his main difficulty is speech and auditory. As would happen his daughter is a speech, language pathologist, and she has a number of years experience working with stroke victims.

Irene - between natural disasters, terrorists and just plain crazy or mean people doing horrible things, this has been quite a year hasn't it all over the world? Those wildfires fires they have often in California are always bad, but from all accounts this has been a particularly bad one. * I don't know why it is that coughs seem to become worse at night, and to compound problems when we are sick we really need as much rest as we can get. * As said to you more than once your Mike is a wonderful man and you are most fortunate to have him living with you. I hope you are feeling better today.

Miller - as I've written many times but I feel it bears repeating, orthotics (what I assume you are referring to as inserts which of course they are) in good athletic shoes that give our feet and ankles good support has cured my heel pain many times over the years and usually within hours. As far as I know I've never had plantar fasciitis. So says the podiatrist my heel pain is caused by my arthritic ankles. I don't get it often, but sometimes it does return. I've heard of using a frozen water bottle before for foot pain, and think I will give it a try next time. I did try the tennis ball exercise, but it did nothing. I think if you wear good substantial shoes with good orthotics it won't take near as long as they said for your feet to be better. * As for protein and carbs, I think most of us tend to gravitate to not just carbs, but starches and sugar especially when upset about something. With all the people I've met over the years I've only known one person, a woman, who'd take a piece of meat anytime over something sweet or any other food. I think most of us fall far short of eating as many fruits and colorful veggies as we should. I know for a fact that is true for us. * As much as I hate its limitations I've learned to live with the stiffness and aches I have. It seems the only alternative is surgery of some kind which may or may not make things better, and at this point that isn't for me. * Thank you so very much for your prayers. Our prayers are definitely being answered.

Ellen - it is good to hear you found a good workout video that suits you. Most I've found are more than I can handle. Jane Fonda does look terrific, I'll give her that.

Grace - I've heard awful stories about the damage broken pipes can cause, and yours is now another one. I do hope they will have all the repairs made to your house, and be out of there soon. As hard as it for you and Don, it does sound as though they are being thorough, and that's a good thing. * Thank you so much for your prayers for my son-in-law. I hadn't thought I'd posted on "Slimming Seniors" since it happened. Perhaps I did on General Chat.

Have a great day everyone, and a most enjoyable weekend.

Hello on Saturday , just watching on News of the horrendous fires in California, a young wiman talking of how a neighbour banged in her door at 1 30 am shouting for her to get out she grabbed her phone and computer and did get out. Nothing left of her house now. Mike and I commented on how phones and computers are the first thing people grab. I probably would as everything is in my I pad.
I am not well now due to a bad cough. It's worse at night,I cough and cough . Miller- I plan to check her other videos. I think I saw one for yoga. *i am so glad the PA was so helpful. Now you have a plan for the winter- use the ball and shoe inserts and hopefully by spring your foot will have healed and you can tackle your knee.

Shirley - I imagine you do get quite a bit of exercise on laundry day with that house arrangement.

Hello to all!!

ELLEN, I'm so glad you found a great workout. I looked at it on YouTube and it looks fun and challenging.

I told GRACE I would keep give an update about my foot pain. The PA at the orthopedist's office said my x-rays look good and I have plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. She prescribed an anti-inflammatory and told me to massage my foot with a ball and a frozen water bottle. She also recommended shoes and inserts, which I bought this afternoon. Hopefully, all of it will help. I'm to go back in four weeks. I hope I'm much better by then. They said it could take 3 to 6 months to heal.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. It's chilly and cloudy here today. emoticon

I am so happy! I found all of Jane Fonda's video's on YouTube and I just finished a 26 minute walking for Beginner's Level. (but it was still a workout for me!) I can watch them on my iPad with my earphones on and have a really great workout. Hopefully these will get my nerves in my feet active!

Just google Jane Fonda's YouTube videos and pick the ones made when she is older. A great workout in your own home free! She had already a knee replacement and a hip replacement on the one I watched. She said that for exercise to really burn calories you need to do aerobics beyond 12 minutes.

I had to share my find! I hope to be back later. (FYI- my foot wanted to go to sleep in the beginning but I refused to listen to it and then it woke up)

GRACE, I'm so sorry to hear that the leak damage was even worse than you first thought and they had to tear up part of your new carpet - you must feel like crying!!! I hope so much that they can get the repairs done well and in a timely manner. I think you're very wise to keep an eye on them. Contractors aren't known for being the most reliable people, unfortunately.

Hang in there - things will get better and soon (hopefully) all this will be a bad memory.

PS - I should get a foot diagnosis Friday morning when I see the PA. I'll let y'all know what I find out. Thanks!

Good afternoon team, I'm sitting here, at home, freezing, because the bathroom contractors have the door wide open to carry things in and out. It's 58 degrees out and 65 degrees in. I do have on 3 layers. Our leak damage got worse today when they found out that the first 4' of the floor going into our bedroom was so badly damaged that they had to tear up part of our new carpet and replace the sub floor in there as well. We're here to keep an eye on them.

MILLER, Have you got a diagnoses for your foot problem yet? I hope your feet are as good as new ASAP! Please let us know what the PA says!

Hello to all.

ELLEN, no, I donít have a date to have knee replacement yet. I was going to wait until spring. My surgeon couldnít get me on his schedule until close to the holidays, anyway, and I get so depressed during the winter months that spring/summer would be the best time for me to have the surgery done (from an emotional standpoint). I do want to get my foot problem fixed first, because it was my ďgoodĒ leg and I will need it in good shape to get around, especially if I donít lose a lot of weight before the surgery.

ALLIE, I admire you for all that you do. You donít let anything stop you and thatís so commendable!

SHIRLEY, I have always craved protein and was once told by a doctor that I have a protein deficiency. Of course, I still eat too many carbs, but you are right that a balanced approach is the way to go. I definitely donít get enough fruits and vegetables and I need to work on that. *I found ďThe Good DoctorĒ On Demand and plan to watch it later today or tonight. Iím looking forward to it. *Iím sorry you have pain in your back and legs. I wish the doctor would do something to help. You might ask if there are any tests they can run to see if itís arthritis, or nerve problems, etc. Of course, that may just seem like too much of an ordeal. If youíre like me, you try to have as few tests of possible. I was supposed to have a colonoscopy about three years ago and still havenít done it. *As I said in a separate post, my prayers are with your SIL and daughter and I hope he makes a complete recovery.

Iím to see a PA in the morning about my foot pain. I hope she can help, as itís even more difficult to exercise now that both sides are in pain. I could do chair exercises, of course, but I donít seem to find the motivation. Itís all I can do to take care of things around the house and go to the grocery store, etc. *I did go out to Chick-Fil-A with Randy for lunch today and though I had to walk slowly, I did make it into the restaurant without too much pain. Of course, I had taken 3 Advil first.

Iím trying hard to get back on track with my eating. I had a grilled chicken sandwich at lunch today and am having chicken and vegetables for dinner tonight.

I hope everyone has a restful evening and a good day tomorrow. emoticon

Good Morning Ladies -

I went to the dentist yesterday to get a permanent crown put on. I haven't felt well for the past few days, but this visit was short and all went well. I got an invitation for lunch today, but declined. I've been awake since before 4:30 and was up by 5. I've got a request for all of you, we learned last night from our daughter that our son-in-law suffered a stroke at work and is ICU for at least a week. I'd appreciate prayers for him. He's a person that can't be still, he must be busy doing something all the time, and the limitations of a stroke would be hard for any of us, but a person like him it will be exceptionally hard.

Allie - I hope your orthopedist complimented you on how well you are doing with exercise - especially swimming because such is so good for we with joint problems. * Thanks for your comment about the medical profession, as you know all too well I so-o agree with you. At 70 years old I too was going strong, but the changes between 70 and 80 were so drastic it was a bit hard to accept. Perhaps this doctor will be one of those people that does well into their 90s, but for most of us unfortunately that doesn't happen. And another thing, I'll bet he hasn't suffered from a bad accident as you have either. From where I sit you do amazingly well.

Ellen - even living in a relatively small house on one level, on laundry day I get quite a bit of walking in Our laundry room is on one end of the house, the linen closet and bedroom on the other. * I've been an advocate for taking in plenty of fiber for many years. My breakfast most every morning is high fiber cereal - Bran Buds now, for years it was Fiber 1, small juice glass of V-8, half banana, 3 oz. of some kind of protein and coffee. There was a diet book published some years ago called "The High Fiber Diet." I learned quite a bit reading it. Like so many nutrients fiber is hard to get enough of.

Miller - I think you will find getting enough protein in your diet will not only keep you satisfied, but it will also give you more energy. You don't want to overdo eating protein just like overeating carbs - primarily sugar and starches, but a good balance works well for us all. * I quite often forget to weigh on Mondays, my weigh-in day or choice, and will weigh the next day too, but I do try to stay as consistent as I can. * I encourage you to watch the premiere episode of "The Good Doctor." It doesn't give a lot of back story, but you will learn he didn't have an easy childhood, and the bad attitudes of some hospital personnel. How he handles all of this is interesting in itself, or at least I find it so. * If it is of any encouragement to you at all - my back hurts from doing so little any longer, and as for my legs I'm all the time getting strange pains in them - if it isn't my knees it is something else.

Have a very good day everyone -

Good evening team:

When I saw my orthopedic doctor today, I made sure I told him about my swimming. I also told the nurse. I told them I went to the Y 5 times last week. I told them I usually try to swim 2 to 3 times a week.

I wanted them to both realize that I am not just sitting around. I am so glad I belong to this team. Everyone here reminds me how important it is to keep moving, in whatever way we can.

I feel when a person is older sometimes the medical profession writes them off. As long as I can do some kind of exercise, I will not give up. When the doctor was looking at the x-rays he reminded me they weren't the x-rays of an 18 year old. He said it in a nice way. He by the way is 70 years old and going strong.

I hope everyone is having a good evening.

I am doing laundry this afternoon after having Toastmasters at noon. We had a guest speaker (among two others) and I let myself get stressed about us limiting our meeting time to 1 hour (I am the president of the club so I feel loads of responsibility). Iím not sure how much ďrealĒ exercise I get from doing laundry. But I was surprised to see this morning I am back to 133.2. Now to keep it off!!

Reeney- Shirley is right. It is all about finding the right range of calories to lose weight. My step-son for months put everything into an iPhone app so he could lose weight. He joined a gym and worked out loads. Now he stays in shape but running and watching what he eats. He says he knows how much is right for him. My son found that cutting out processed foods, sugars, and dairy products helped him. He goes to the gym almost every day also. I know that the older I get, the harder it is to maintain my weight. I need to replace my DVD so I can get back to my Jane Fonda dance video. It is one she made after double knee replacements and a hip replacement, so I know it is ok for us seniors.

Irene- I really, really like your comment- ďLook for other positivesĒ! That is a great saying!

Becky- you have lived a very interesting life! I am sure it has given you different perspectives. *My motherís doctor told her to do exactly what you are doing with alternating eggs and oatmeal. *That is nice that Panama classified for the world cup!

Shirley- Yes, I must stay focused on eating more protein in order to stay full longer. I have noticed that carbs by themselves donít cut it. But Miller has a good point about high fiber food is also good. I remember when I joined weight watchers for a month and lost 5 pounds by making sure my fiber was 25 grams a day and my calories were within points.

Miller- do you have a date yet to have your knees replaced or do you want to take care of this foot problem first?

Ellen

Hello to all.

ELLEN, I, too, find that protein (like eggs) in the morning keeps me full longer. Of course, sometimes high fiber cereal does, as well. All-Bran Bran Buds have 13 grams of fiber for one-third of a cup. I find eating a half cup really satisfies me for many, many hours.

REENEY, I think your plan to alternate strength training with walking is a good one. Shirleyís recommendations to weigh, measure, and track nutrition is very good advice, as well.

IRENE, Congratulations on increasing your strength - that is great!!

BECKY, yes, the wildfires in California are terrible. It seems thereís been one tragedy or catastrophe after another lately. *Itís great that Panama classified for the World Cup for the first time!!

SHIRLEY, I agree with everything you said about weighing once a week. Since I forgot on Monday, I weighed on Tuesday and my weight was up. Itís no surprise to me, since I had several eating binges after talking with Katieís doctor. *Regarding ďThe Good DoctorĒ - I have watched the last two episodes and enjoyed them very much. I think I need to try to watch the first episodes On Demand, as I feel Iím missing part of the back story. *I hope your dental appointment goes well.

I got a bit scared in the grocery store today. I had to wait a long time to check out and I had pain from plantar fasciitis on the left side and pain from my knee on the right side and even with a cart I was having difficulty. I began to worry that I might not be able to continue doing the basic things I have to do in life. I'm going to try to see a foot doctor soon.

I hope everyone has a good evening and a nice day tomorrow.

Good Morning Everyone -

Becky - it so good to have you back! * Yes, this year has been plagued with more natural disasters than usual. But you know, who knows unless you are someone who studies weather patterns. With today's news, nothing happens in the world without us knowing about it, and some things are so sensationalized in order to make a good story. Long ago this wasn't the case, so - as said - who knows. I know this country - especially southern Louisiana and Alabama's Gulf coast has been hit more than I can remember. Then you add to that that horrific shooting. * I can hear how thrilled you are that Panama is going to play in the World Cup.

Irene - it is good to hear your walking and other exercise and weight loss is showing up in you becoming more agile and having more strength.

Reeny - yes exercise is important in many ways, and it does aid in weight loss, BUT... you are going to have to weigh, measure, and track the foods you are eating keeping the calories low (but not too low, as that can lead to problems) in order to lose weight. As we get into our older years you will find it is far harder to lose weight and so easy to gain than it was in our younger years.

Ellen - I'm happy you are finding for yourself the value of eating enough protein. For years I've been preaching this and I guess will continue to do so -- I'm not a fan of high protein diets, neither do I like high carb ones (meaning starches and sugar) either. A good 40% carbs (little or no sugar and starch) -30% lean protein - and 30% fat (aiming for monounsaturated and tying to avoid saturated) per meal is about as good as it gets. * "The Good Doctor" - TV series. I agree with your sister. I think there are only 3 episodes that you've missed. Where each episode tends to begin and finish each week, the characters do build, so seeing the series from the first will definitely help. * As for the woman in your Bible study, it sounds like she has a bad case of osteoporosis. Both my mother and step-mother had this, and mother had to take injections for hers too that would make her ill afterwards, so she spent lots of time in bed. This drug was just being introduced back then, and let's hope it has been improved on and is without the awful side effects now.

Miller - I don't need your weight for the Challenge except on the first day and last day of the month, but I think it wise for all of us to weigh once a week -- as said - same day, right out of bed, after using the toilet with no clothes to get the most accurate reading.

Allie - I agree with all you said about managing pain. When young I would sun bathe, but no more. For one thing I'm on a med that says I shouldn't be in the sun for extended periods of time.

I must run. I've got a dental appointment at one and must shower and get dressed. Have a good day everyone -

Shirley

Shirley, I'm glad I don't have to face the Halloween candy....or Easter candy....or girl scout cookies. emoticon

Miller, now it's wildfires in California. There sure have been an abnormal number of horrendous natural disasters lately.

Ellen, Christmas in the tropics is the norm for me. I grew up in the Panama Canal Zone (my father was a ship pilot for the canal) and have lived in Costa Rica for years. You know, I usually alternate between oatmeal and egg/whole wheat toast/cheese for breakfast, and I definitely stay full longer with the egg breakfast. I guess it's the carbs VS protein? I'm hoping to keep my bones strong with the calcium/vitamin D for now. I was reading different articles on-line about osteopenia, but there sure is a lot of conflicting information.

Reney, I can sympathize. I used to lose weight with just a little effort, and now it is so much harder. I lose a couple of pounds and then even when I'm watching what I eat and exercising it creeps back up. Very frustrating.

I was so happy to see that Panama classified for the World Cup last night....even though Costa Rica lost to them. They've never been to the World Cup and the government declared a holiday today.

When the scales don't show a loss I look for other positives,
Yesterday I got in my daughter in laws huge tank of a car. Unaided. When she picks me up at home I have no problem as I step in from the raised pavement/ sidewalk. From a car park. I have always needed a step or some help. This time I pulled myself up from level ground. I was so pleased I am sharing it with others who know exactly what I mean . I have been exercising daily so my stomach muscles are stronger .
Have a positive day .Irene

Trying to get back on plan I have about 30 pounds to lose and not quite sure what will work! Always strength trained then just got lazy so I thought I'll walk do the videos but I'm not as consistent as I should be! So I'm thinking perhaps if I strength train 3 times a week and walk twice a week maybe then I won't be in such a rut! At 63 don't know if it will work like it did when I was in my 40s and 50s!!

Becky- I am so glad to see your post and learn all is well with you!! *I had osteopenia for years and unfortunately was not good about taking calcium and may not have done enough weight bearing exercise. Now I take prescription medication once a week to try and build up my bones. *Yes, my DHís sciatica pain wakes him up and night. He gets up and has to try and work it out. * If Costa Rica is like Florida it is hard to get in any kind of Christmas spirit when it is summer year around. I remember being so surprised to see a giant decorated Christmas tree when I visit a division of my company in Florida. It felt like summer, not December. I must admit I love the seasons except really, hot dry weather in July here.

I did some of my physical therapy and some yoga this morning, but still have tons to do and also plan to go downstairs and ride my stationary bike. I thought about walking outside since it is so pretty but my feet were losing feeling while I ran errands so I probably need to stay safe.
I observed something really interesting from this morning. Usually, I have ľ c. dry oatmeal, a few dried cranberries, Ĺ apple, Ĺ cup milk, raw sugar, and 1T chopped walnuts for breakfast. Instead, I had 2 eggs, no toast, just two eggs. I usually get hungry in 3 hours from the oatmeal and I was fine until around 1:30 pm from the eggs (about 100 fewer calories). This team has been saying that protein keeps you full and I experienced that.

Shirley- my younger sister was telling me about the new series The Good Doctor yesterday afternoon in our Sunday call. She said it was best to use On Demand and watch it from the beginning. *My doctor is perfectly willing to run all the tests I want but I am thinking, why waste the taxpayerís money (and that includes me) if the answer is more movement? *I remember asking my mother what was wrong with my uncle who was in a wheelchair and she said, ďoh, just old age.Ē I have never really accepted that age should be an answer. Yes, we have to accept our limitations, but I never think we are too old to not try to get better. Studies show that ninety year olds can improve muscles and mobility with weights and the right movements. *I understand loving to read. I read three of the Trash Ďní Treasure mysteries over the weekend.

Grace- thanks for the update on Peggy! Iím sure she is having a great time in Pennsylvania.

Irene- I love the idea of using a belt to measure our progress. That is a real motivator to watch what we eat and lose down to another hole. I have a couple I could use for that.

Miller- my weight seems stuck! I really need a motivator to get going again!

Allie- a woman in my Bible Study whose bones are crumbling says water exercise makes her feel so good. She has to give herself shots in the stomach to try and build up her bones.

Hello to all.

BECKY, I'm sorry to hear Costa Rica was hit so hard. I haven't watched the news much lately, so I didn't know. I hope the recovery efforts go well. *My middle sister had ostopenia, but I can't remember what the treatment was for it.

GRACE, I hope your home repairs are soon completed. I'm sure you're weary and frustrated.

SHIRLEY, I forgot to weigh this morning (which I try to do each Monday before breakfast), so it's good to be reminded that you don't need our weight every week.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Good morning team:

I slept in but was able to to get an hour of laps in at the Y. There was a lot of confusion because it was so crowded. It was interesting to watch how people managed to swim or not swim. There was another bully in the pool and one of the lifeguards tried to deal with him. It didn't go well, I was just glad I wasn't near him.

Shirley: When I have pain if I relax as much as possible it lessens the pain. If I tense up it is much worse. If I sit in the sun that relaxes me and then the pain isn't so bad. I try very hard to not get stressed if I can help it.

For example: If I am in a grocery store and it is too crowded and I am getting stressed I will sometimes leave my cart and walk out.

Yes,I know life is often stressful but I have learned to just walk away from things. I don't achieve that all the time but I try.

I hope everyone is having a good day. It is raining cats and dogs here.

Good Morning Everyone -

Irene - I hesitate to say we are seeing the wrath of God with all the earthquakes and storms we are seeing, but in all honesty, I wouldn't discount such either. God has blessed us all, and yet humanity as a whole has seemed to be trying to abolish or ignore Him. * As for the Challenge as I keep saying I only need to know your weight at the beginning of the month and at the end of the month. Again, as said many times before, many weight loss experts think "a belt" or a tape measure to be a better indicator of our weight loss progress than the scales. It sounds like you are doing very well indeed. I hope you will keep on doing just what you are.

Grace - thank you for the update on Peggy. As you've most likely gathered by now I'm seldom on Facebook any longer. I'm familiar with how she and Tom do things when they travel so this doesn't surprise me. * I know posting isn't easy for you now, and so appreciate you checking in.

Becky - Thank you so Very Much for checking in. I'm so sorry to hear that Costa Rica got hit so hard by that hurricane, but most happy to know you are okay. I'm just surprised we haven't heard more about it. But between a horrendous shooting here as well as some of our states along the Gulf continuing to get hit by these awful storms, I guess that's the reason why. * Decorating for Christmas or anything - any longer it is too hard for me to do. But you know I would if it meant something to either of us, but it doesn't. The meaning of Christmas is still very special to us, and I do put out a Nativity during the month of December and a Christmas wreath on the door, but that's it any longer. Until I guess the past 7 or 8 years I guess I still put up our Big tree and decorated to the hilt. I just can't do that any longer, and I agree the part I hated most was packing everything up again. * Halloween - people tend to believe what they choose to believe, and hear what they want to hear. It is sad that more people don't try to see the good in things rather than the bad. Oh yes Halloween candy has been out here for a good month or better I would guess. The stores here seem not to be able to finish with one holiday before they are pushing another. I'm surprised I'm not seeing Christmas stuff by now. And I so agree with your husband about how commercial Christmas has become.

Wishing for us all a good day and an enjoyable week.

New week new start. A grey morning but not cold.
Yes there is a lot in the News now but we did see quite a lot in the devestation in Porto Rica , Miles of rubble with not a house standing . No power or clean water, , in olden times people would say the Gods are angry with us. So many storms and disasters. But nature can bring fury at times .
I reported my exercise minutes this morning, but not my weight. There's no change but that happened last month . Nothing for two weeks then 4lbs off in the last two weeks , hoping fir the same, I follow an adapted version of Slimming World which suits me, I am in a Facebook group for those following SW plan from home as I am.
I reported there today no change on scales BUT I feel fitter and leaner, recently I rescued a belt from the charity bag, I use that as my guide, it had been too small. Then I found it would fasten in the first hole. Today I can fasten it on the second hole . So as I said then I am trying to remind others the numbers in a scale aren't the only thing to go by . There are many other signs . Have a good week, Irene

Quick post to update the team about Peggy - From Facebook it appears that she's on a trip to visit family in PA.
We're at the hotel so it's hard to write long posts.
I hope everyone has a good night!

Costa Rica was hit really hard. I think we live in the only part of the country that didn't have too much damage. We had lots of wind, but not much rain. School in the entire country was cancelled on Thursday and Friday. And since we live in the mountains, the rain runs off and it usually doesn't flood. But a large part of Costa Rica as bad as what you see on the news for Puerto Rico. Terrible flooding....mudslides....roads completely destroyed. Real devastation. Thanks for asking Shirley, Marlene and Ellen. emoticon

Yesterday I went to San Josť with two friends for our annual mammogram and sonogram (comfort in numbers!!). I added the bone density test this year and found out that I have osteopenia. I'm going to have to find out what action I'll have to take. I thought we were going to have to cancel because of the weather, but our mountain road was fine. It took double the time it usually takes for the trip because of mudslides, but we made it. We ate lunch at a restaurant that offers healthy food. It was really good, too.

Ellen, I agree about the mirrors in public places. There's nothing worse!! I use a mirror in my dark closet....and stand back about ten feet. I look great in that mirror!!!! emoticon So your DH manages his back problems with exercise. It's great that he can. Is his problem sleeping caused by back pain?

Shirley, we don't decorate for Christmas any more either. My DH hates how commercial it's become and it's been a few years now since we stopped putting up a tree and decorating. I hate to admit it, but I love not having to put everything up and then take it back down and store it away. emoticon

I really miss Halloween. It's a misunderstood holiday here....people think that it's satanic. I have tried educating people on the true history of Halloween so that we can celebrate it in my school, but I've given up. It was one of my favorite holidays. I guess Halloween candy is out in the stores now. Yum!!! emoticon

Marlene, your trip to Valley Forge sounds like fun. I love history and historical sites. When we lived in northern Virginia we visited Harper's Ferry frequently. Such a beautiful place to hike. I hope your DGG stays safe in Iraq.

Thanks for the silver trophies. How exciting!!

Hello Again -

I usually don't take the time to post twice in a day, but today is an exception.

About Becky - she posted on the Challenge thread yesterday so she must be okay and have power/electricity. I heard just a tiny bit about a hurricane or storm hitting Costa Rica, but with the shooting in Las Vegas, a car attack in London, the devastation from a hurricane in Puerto Rico, etc., etc. there has been little about Costa Rica -barely a mention. I'm assuming that if Costa Rica got hit it didn't do much damage. Hopefully Becky will post and let us know.

Ellen - I hope doing more walking will help your legs. Sometimes I think the doctors take the easy way out and don't explore to "really" find out what our problems are and what's causing them. And as said before if you are a woman "we are all chronic complainers, so no need to take us seriously." If overweight, "if we exercised more and lost 100 lbs. we wouldn't be having problems." If we are elderly, "what do you expect? You are old." As you've learned I'm the last one to talk to about doctors. I know we need them, but most of the time I find my visits to them a waste of time. There is a new TV series this fall called "The Good Doctor." This young surgeon is autistic and a savant - also brilliant with the cutest personality. The show focuses on our preconceived notions and prejudices, as well as just what I'm talking about here when it comes to doctors. You may want to check it out.

What does my husband do on his computer all day - mainly playing his role play games. But he is also on Twitter and Facebook and keeps up with the news. Sometimes he breaks and watches some TV in his office or reads. He is an avid reader too. His Apple Watch will tell him to get up and move every 30 minutes or so. Who knows if he does it or not. He claims he does, but I haven't seen it. And no, neither of us know enough about high finance to play the stock market. We are both smart and good at math, but know all too well we don't know enough to venture there. Plus neither of us are lucky people - fortunate yes, but not what you'd call lucky - so we don't gamble.

Fitbits - as I've said time and time again about pedometers and like devices they are not totally accurate, but my Fitbit does give me a good ballpark figure about what I'm doing. Sometimes my sleep function works pretty accurately, but sometimes for some unknown reason it doesn't. You can go on fitbit.com and explore the various models and find one that would fit your husband's needs. I wear mine 24/7 and he may not be willing to do that.

Yes, I know there are medications for restless legs as well as overactive bladders, but some of the side effects I don't need to deal with. Thankfully I don't have restless legs often, and it usually is caused by me being over tired and I need to go to bed, but it is too early to do so.

My BIL farms several thousand acres with these huge machines (he does this at 78 years old). It turns out his feet are going to sleep like mine. He went to a neurologist, did all the studies and the results- EXERCISE MORE!! Although he farms, most of that is sitting in an air-conditioned and driving. The other hard work is hired out. So, this is Day one of my goal to MOVE MORE!! Why do all those tests to just be told to move more? I have my six month check up with my primary doctor in November, so I have a little over a month to try my plan.
I am going to try and fix this problem on my own until it gets worse.

Grace- I am constantly reminding myself to keep the spine straight, squat, donít bend over with my knees locked, etc. It is a constant battle.

Irene- good for you for walking away from the crisps/chips! They can be my downfall and just 16 potato chips are 160 calories!!! *I read a Spark People blog where the person said they just ate Ĺ of everything, Ĺ baked potato, Ĺ steak, etc. I wish I had that kind of discipline- I use to have it. *After reading your post, my goals for the week are MOVE MORE and BE POSITIVE!

Shirley- all those lights in public restrooms, salons, and other places make me look horrible. I look like I am 100 years old, havenít slept in days and have no make-up on. *My DH spends way too much time watching TV, but he does work out at the gym and is doing physical therapy. I canít imagine what your DH finds to do on the PC all day. Does he invest in the stock market? *You are right. My eating is out of control. I am trying to drink more water but I seem to just get hungry often; maybe not enough protein? *I am seriously thinking about getting my DH a good Fitbit just to record his sleep. I bought him one of the least expensive Garminís but it was too small for his wrist (I canít even put my fingers around his wrist). But I am afraid he would not use it. *Did you know there are medications for restless legs?

Miller- I find decorating my house for the seasons is so uplifting. I strongly recommend doing it! Also, I love lighting candles on the mantel on dark days; even it is just some Yankee Candles which may be safer. emoticon emoticon

Allie- I am always so glad when you find ways to lessen your pain. *I donít want to go to any stores on the week-ends. It is just too crazy, but I have found our grocery store around 6 pm is not all that bad.

Marlene- you are right- I know Peggy was going to a high school reunion, but that seems quite a long time ago but maybe it wasnít. I am also very concerned about Becky.

Good Morning Everyone -

I'm glad to hear a number of you enjoyed the graphic I posted yesterday. It is one of my favorites too.

Marlene - I woke up at 4:30 this morning and struggled to get back to sleep. I guess I must have dozed somewhere in that period and finally getting up at 6 as my Fitbit recorded I was asleep. * I can get restless legs during the night as well as numbness on occassion, and you are right such keeps us awake and is very annoying. I find taking a couple of Advil will help me. * You do manage to do more walking than I could handle, but I must say your outing with your friends, Barbara and her friends did sound so nice. * You are right about Peggy. I had chalked her absence up to them traveling again, but I would think they should be back home by now.

Allie - when I used to go to the gym, although I was working then I wouldn't go to the gym on the weekends for just the reason you said. * How interesting about sitting in the sun and its effects on your pain. I don't think I've heard or experienced that before.

Miller - I haven't decorated for Halloween in many years. In fact now days I don't even do much decorating at Christmas either. I do need to get to Michael's and buy a new Fall wreath for the front door.

Have a Happy Sunday everyone -

Shirley

Hello Team Sisters. It is midnight and I am not able to go to sleep. My right leg is numb and that is annoying. I walked alot yesterday and today. I wonder if that is the cause.

There was a Women's Fair this weekend. Two friends and I go every year. Today Barbara and a friend met up with us. So that was my walking. All of us then went for lunch which was nice.

Shirley, your Saturday greeting is so nice. Thank you.

Must be something in the air I too have been bad with eating the last few days.

I've been wondering about Peggy. She hasn't posted in awhile. Hope she and Tom are okay.

Guess I will try getting settled and sleeping.

Good evening team:

I decided not to go to the Y today. It can be a madhouse on the weekends. There are a lot of children and the pool can be extra crowded.

I did work on my yard so I was able to claim that as exercise. The fresh air did me a lot of good.

When I sit in the sun, it helps decrease my pain. I did a lot of sitting after my yard work and it was just what I needed.

I hope everyone has a good evening and you all sleep well.

Hello to all and Congratulations to all in the Challenge. emoticon

SHIRLEY, what a lovely Saturday blessing. It brightened my day!!! emoticon emoticon

I'm working on getting my eating back in line, but I doubt I will see a loss on Monday morning. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a gain. I definitely don't want to gain back everything I've lost, so I have to try hard to stay motivated. These next four days of rain may prove to be challenging, but I can turn on all the lights to make things brighter in the house and maybe get Katie or Randy to get my Halloween decorations down from the attic. It might be fun to decorate a bit. I already have up some fall decorations, but a few more might make things more festive.

Good Morning Everyone -

Irene - you should be proud of yourself for doing so well on the September Challenge. You, Marlene and I are the oldest members of this team, and we have some on the team that do so Very Well with not only exercising, but eating and weight control as well. You definitely deserve all the praise you can get. And I so agree with what you said about this team. * I'm glad you got your eyes tested, as said more than once here, my husband and I Must get that done. As for choosing frames, I like rimless ones with wire ear pieces. I like for my glasses to be as inconspicuous as possible. It sounds like you and your daughter-in-law made your eye appointment an outing, and that was good.

Grace - you are so right about posture. When our backs hurt or we are tired it is so easy to slump. My husband is quite stooped and hunched. For one thing he sits at his computer too much sort of slumped, plus has never paid attention to trying to make himself stand straight. His mother became hunched over in her old age, so who knows such may be hereditary too, but who knows.

Ellen - my little portable exercycle was such a disappointment, and thus I never use it. I'm glad that yours works better than mine. * Interesting about eating - on Thursday I found I couldn't be satisfied with what I was eating, and I ate more than I had in ages. Yesterday was better, but still not the best. I've had a couple of frustrating days - making dumb mistakes when trying to do things, my mind not being as sharp as it should be, and thus my computer and iPhone and Pad not doing what I thought they should making things worse. * Dying ones hair - I have a close friend that colors her hair too. Like you she colors it a soft brown, I guess you would call it, and she always looks lovely. She is about your age. From your pictures I like very much the color of your hair. Like your pastor's wife, I had a friend whose hair was totally white and beautiful, and when we met she was a rather young woman, she and I are the same age, and her son was grown and married. The story goes when she had her son and only child she almost died. The experience was so traumatic it left her with snow white hair. Her hair was beautiful (as said) and with her young face she couldn't have been prettier. My hair is still quite black with grey highlights, but each time I get it cut in the salon lights - not only do they make me look really old, but my hair greyer too - smile.

Allie - I agree with what Ellen said to you about that guy at the Y. Why is it that some people enjoy so much being trouble makers. From your posts it sounds like the pool at the Y is a big one with lots of lanes and thus it confuses me why the lane you prefer is the one everyone else wants too. Remember my son swam competitively since he was 9, so where I'm not a swimmer, although I do know how to swim, I'm no stranger to pools, swimming laps and swim meets either. * You should be proud of your trophy for September. You definitely earned it and deserve it.

Miller - thank you. Your sympathetic words and encouragement is so appreciated. * What's going on with several of us and wanting to overeat? Ellen and I both seem to be having this problem right now too. Yes, stress can cause this, and it sounds like as far as you and I are concerned that may be the case. Although my stress is nothing serious as yours could be, but more aggravation.

Marlene - I'm glad to hear your trip to Valley Forge was enjoyable. Sorry to hear Walt isn't feeling well however. * I hope your new neighbors prove to be good ones. Our new ones as of a couple years ago are the nicest people. However I'm seldom in the yard any longer, and to tell you the truth haven't felt like encouraging the friendship. There was a time when this wouldn't have been so. * I have seen nothing on the news about Costa Rica being hit by a hurricane. After your post, I've listened but have heard nothing. All that I'm hearing is the same stuff over and over and OVER about that horrible shooting in Las Vegas. However yesterday they did say a hurricane or tropical storm was heading across the Gulf toward Mobile and New Orleans. Let's hope it peters out before it gets either place. Those poor people have had more than their share of the trauma from these storms. Like you, however, I hope Becky and her family are okay. It concerns me a bit about what you posted since we haven't heard from her in a few days. * Sorry to hear Andrew is back in Iraq. I do thank him and all his buddies for their service, but... * I know you will miss Barbara and Tom at Christmas, but I'm glad they can spend Christmas with their family and grandchildren too.

Have a good day and an enjoyable weekend everyone,

Shirley

Hello on Saturday
I was amazed yesterday to see I had won two awards ,
I felt I had done well and proud of myself !
At last I seem to have found the right way for me to eat and exercise.
I congratulate all the others. Winners and Tryers , there are no losers in this team ,

Two things helps me in everything I do . Believe in myself and Stay positive .
Yesterday my ddil took me to another town for an eye test, she parked a way from the place, so we walked there and back. After my very thorough hour long test I was too tired to chose new glasses frames then. I had been told there was quite a change in my right eye . I said I will go back to chose my new glasses and have the lens fitted to my own choice frames.
We then walked to a small cafe for a light lunch. I chose baked potato with Prawns . Plus salad. The plate came with what we call crisps too, I think they are potato chips to you? Maggie eats healthily too so we both left them .
Walking back to the car gave me more exercise minutes ,
I gave in at home and had a much needed nap ! Enjoy your weekend Irene

ELLEN, I've been meaning to tell you that I'm grateful for you for reminding me to watch my posture and not walk around like an old person. I know Shirley has good posture but I have to fight for it. It's easier to slump around like the downtrodden I guess. (smile)

emoticon Congratulations to Irene, Becky, Miller, Allie! You did awesome in September! emoticon

A new month! A new me! I really hope I do better in October than I did in September. I am not going to meet my 2017 goals if I donít change my habits. I did get on my big stationary bike and did 20 minutes. I am so out of shape! I may get my little exercycle out and ride it tonight watching TV.

Miller- I did not have a good day yesterday eating wise and need to improve tonight.

Allie- I am so glad you recognize that it is ďa gameĒ the guy at the Y is playing and donít let it impact you. As the old saying goes, ď Not my circus, not my monkeyĒ.

Marlene- I didnít even think about the current hurricane in the gulf impacting Becky! Oh, dear. I hope all is well with her and her family. *Years ago, my DH and I visited Valley Forge. I tried to picture in my mind that terrible winter George Washington and his troops went through.

It sounds like we are all inspired to do more ďsparkingĒ in October!

Good afternoon team:

I slept in but still made it to the Y. My right shoulder was hurting me so I cut back a little on my swim.

Shirley: Thank you for my gold trophy. That inspired me. Now hopefully I will work harder on my weight loss.
