Tracie, your new doctor sounds like a keeper. I love how he encouraged you to trust yourself and listen to your body. And that the limits he placed were because specific risk factors weren't known yet. He sounds like a great person to have on your team!

You can always try the Galloway walk/run method, way easier on you and your joints. I find I run just as fast because my running time is faster when I take walk breaks than when I just run. Either way I'm still pretty slow. emoticon

Well folks the verdict is in. My cholestrol, A1C, and C-reactive protein were all extremely high when I began this journey. My A1C was just recently tested and I was taken off of Metformin( diabetes med). Yesterday the new doc had new blood tests run for my cholestrol and c-reactive protein. My blood pressure was 110/70 and my heart rate was 62 ( not exactly resting, but after waiting in the waiting room for an hour)This new doc( Dr. Stangebye) was interested in the fact that I have been snowshoeing at over 10,000 feet elevation in the last 3 months, with no breathing difficulties after having been diagnosed with lung disease. Just like everyone here, he suggested that although obese, I should listen to my body. Cholestrol could be elevated still and I could go ahead and start running. C-reactive protein that is elevated can cause a stroke ( it has something to do with arteries and the heart) so he said not to run a marathon until I get the test results back but as for working up to a 5k- I have the green light to go ahead. Will start back on track Friday. Thank you everybody for being so supportive, you are a great bunch. I honestly believe that if I set my mind to it, I can accomplish anything. I know you all can too!

The doc saying you could not lose weight without surgery does not appear to understand or acknowledge a few small points.

1) With God, all things are possible.
2) In a supportive environment and with the determination people can rise beyond their former limitations.
3) You may recognize his motive to gain money from performing surgery ;)

I am not a doctor, but I can see your progress tracker, and that alone says you CAN! I strongly urge you to continue forward in a safe and careful path to improvement and am happy for your progress.
Pay attention to the cues from your body. If running proves to be too much on the joints then maybe the recumbent bike, hiking, swimming or all the above may prove to be your cardio comfort zone.

A few months ago I had a colonoscopy done ( routine) the surgeon who did it also is the ONLY doc in our county that does weight loss surgery. He told me that it would be literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to lose weight because once you get so big, you just can't lose it and that I would HAVE to get surgery in order to get my weight down. And, he was happy to offer to be the surgeon, for the sum of 15,000 bucks. Another doctor one time told me, " if it tastes good Tracie, spit it out." I'll keep you guys tuned in, even if it doesn't go my way, it will still go my way!

I'm curious what he says too. I think you can listen to your body. It will tell you if you are harming it. But I do understand that the heavier we are the harder it is on our joints.

I once had a doctor tell me to eat 1200 calories a day to lose weight when I was almost 300 pounds. Well, I did, I lost 30 pounds, but I also started smoking again because the diet was so restrictive. Then I quit the diet but not the smoking and gained it all back. Years later, when I started my current journey, I realized that this doctor had NEVER ONCE suggested I exercise. I should have known right then and there not to listen to him.

They don't always know best. Good luck to you!

I want to know what the new doc says!

Hi my name is Lin. Time zone GMT-5
The plan is to do Zumba at least 2-3 times per week and TRX or other hour long workout once per week.... (or 2 half hour workouts). Total goal 500-1000 fitness minutes weekly.

BUT i injured my knee so I have to learn to do some chair exercises. Please ask me if I started yet.... cuz I probably didnt.

I made an appointment today for another doctor and will be seeing him on Tuesday, this doctor is younger, around my age and looks like he is some kind of weightlifter or something ( I checked him out online before I made the appt.) I forgot to mention that the doctor that told me this ( about no running) also told me that he thought I was losing weight too rapidly and doesn't want me losing more than 2 pounds a week. I have always kind of felt like he was a pill pusher(quack-like)and he seemed a little bummed out that I didn't want any "drugs" this time. Isn't that wierd, a doctor ASKING if you want a prescription? Keep your fingers crossed on the new doc,if I like him he will be my new PCP.

Swimming or water aerobics is good in taking out so much of the impact from step aerobics.

Also, maybe do some cardio on a recumbent bike?

If you feel that you don't want to stop I would at least get a second opinion first. Believe me I know how much you want to be able to keep going and achieving your goals, but at the same time you want to make sure you don't do any permanent damage in the meantime. Why chance it? Go to a different doctor first.

A month ago I went to an orthopedic doctor because my right knee was bothering me. It seems I have arthritis. And that doctor told me I needed to stop using it so much that I was doing a ridiculous amount of exercise. He told me to stop all of it. emoticon
I did get a second opinion because stopping all activity is completely against all medical advice I have ever heard. A second doctor reasonably limited some activity and added some physical therapy stuff I wasn't doing. And he is monitoring me. I go back in about 2 weeks. He added a brace, too. Some doctors do not advocate exercise.
I would think running with a brace would be ok if he was concerned. But again, I am not a doctor.
Get a 2nd opinion. Be honest. Tell them what you are doing and what you want to accomplish. A good doctor will help you road map a path to your success.

Be your dream! Don't just imagine, do it!

Go for it. Though you may want to consider getting another doc just to be safe. Someone closer to home, who can learn your Previous health issues, will be on your side and know that you want to exercise and become who You really are.

that's right. I'm gonna keep on doing what I am doing because whatever I am doing is making me healthy. And he.............is not. Maybe he is afraid to have a healthy patient, one that has basically been at least a monthly thing for 2 years up until about 3 months ago. I am sure I have helped put at least 1 of his kids through college already!

It sounds like he is dishing out good but stereotyped advice. I would be more impressed if he offered to follow you closely as you run and have you promise to stop if there is any pain, ANYWHERE.

Get the 2nd, get excellent shoes, run on soft turf like grass and dirt rather than concrete or road.
Build up gradually and check with your doctor often... if only by phone. (I suspect this will be another doctor)

I would also get a second opinion (but I'm known for doing that until I get the answer I want...).
Or, I would start swimming to lose the 40lbs and then start from there.

I hate to say it...you could always get a second opinion. I do not know your doc or anything about him or your health, but some are more inclined to medicate and some are more into physical good.
I had a doctor before who really refused to give medicine unless you were going die!! (not really, but it seemed that way!)
His first 'prescription' was always exercise. I dont know...just something to keep in mind.
This doc may just be underestimating you. Wouldnt that be great??
Otherwise, keep walking and feeling good and lose the weight and then run like heck!

YES I DO. I mean, come on I broke one of my ankles about 15 years ago and the other one about 7 years ago. What's the big deal? He kind of freaked me out like my shins are going to start cracking or something. You know, very heavy people can work up to good physical health and he took me off of diabetes medicine, anxiety medicine, sleeping pills, I don't need any of it anymore. Exercise works for me

That stinks! Dont you hate it when you decide to do something good and someone else (in authority) makes you stop??

I just came back from my 50 mile roundtrip to the doctor and he has asked me to NOT run, or do the C25K program until I have lost another 40 pounds, then he will re-evaluate. I have broken both of my ankles and he said that walking briskly is about all he wants me to do at this point. I told him that I was already walking 2 miles in 30 minutes and he said " Are you serious? Well, please don't go any faster than that." I asked about low impact aerobics he said that was fine as long as I don't push it too much, but no step aerobics. I just bought the frickin' step and 3 DVDS!!!!!!!!! I think he is being a wuss, but I'm going to follow his request. Trust me, I'LL BE BACK! I did good on the first 2 days so, I don't know, he said that running is really bad for your joints and he does not advocate running. Maybe it's time to find another doc? Thanks everybody for having been so supportive.
