You mention that you have a union. The words "union grievance" cause fits to upper management. I would talk to your co-workers and find out if any of them would support a group grievance. If so, then have your union rep send a letter to the manager and tell him/her that steps will be taken to fix this. There's no reason why you should have to suffer.

I'm with Bren, but also keep your eyes open for something else, in case they don't help!

This sounds awful, how stressful for you. If it's a big corperation, there must be someone further up the ladder you and your coworkers could go to. Enlist your coworkers to get together and contact the higher-ups. They dont' want these guys either and may not even know what is going on. Good luck!

Honestly, I would look for another job, but not quit the current one until I had a new one. Going to the top will most likely not produce the results you want.

Unfortunately he's person in absolute charge of the store and EVERYTHING has to go through him for approval, or not.

Wow, that sounds awful! I wonder if someone else could take care of scheduling and may be able to do it with paying attention to people's eligible hours. I hope things improve!

I work for a major retailer in the Ann Arbor area. Our problem is our store director is a person who has a big ego that constantly needs to be stroked. He keeps changing schedules-forcing some parents to scramble to find child care (If they can). And many people scramble to find family time that they are used to having all along. Some people work a ten hour shift only to come back eight hours later to work another ten hour shift. Overtime is random, but mandatory (If you've already worked your ten hours- you still have to stay for overtime). When we hired in we were told to fill out our "hours of availability"- we didn't pull random hours out of nowhere, we put down what we could work. Now those are being totally ignored and he's picking random shifts for people who are used to working a set schedule. I feel this is raising stress levels, causing mroe illnesses, and morale is in the toilet! I've already thought of going over his head- that person cares even less about the employees, and the union is useless. I can't afford to lose my job but, like many, many other people at this retail location, we're getting fed up and a lot of us are ready to quit regardless. My question is..should I write to the corporate headquaters and go straight to the president of the company or should I grit my teeth, invest in Ibuprophen and hope for the best? By the way almost half of hte staff are already gone and the rest of us are expected to not only get our own work done but everything else too. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
