I use the A to Z list in the Dining Guide more than the actual restaurants. I also live in an area that doesn't have a lot of the chains.

I love to go to Olive Garden for the Minestrone Soup and the Salad.
They give you seconds if you are still hungry for more.. This is a complete meal and so delicious and low in points plus.
1 serving of Minestrone is 2 pp
Garden fresh salad w/o dressing is 3 pp.

This is one place I can enjoy for 5 point lunch.

When my friends go out to eat I used the guide to help me order. I asked my friends if we could go to Olive Garden. I had the soup and salad and knew I couldn't eat but one serving of the salad and breadsticks but could have two bowls of soup and was full and sure felt a lot better.

I have not had a whole plate of nachos since I saw that most are over 1600 calories. I can't believe some of the things I used to eat. I'm still a work in progress through....

Thanks for Listenin'

Kathy,
That is so true. I have the book that I bought last year called, Eat this Not that.
Amazing what it tells you about the calories.
Think I need to get it out again and re-read it. Great reminder.

One I found pretty interesting was, on the swaps.
Eat this, turkey sandwich, 6" subway turkey sub with cheese,330 calories,8.5 fat
NOT that -- was the swap
Panera Sierra Turkey, 840 calories and 40 grams of fat.

emoticon Be careful everyone. The Dining Out companion is great for the places, if they are in your area. Otherwise, I try to go online before I go out to eat at the place and check the menu and calories.

YES, knowledge is power for sure!!!

I bought the book DRINK THIS NOT THAT....and was just FLOORED by the truth in there about alot of drinks I see folks drinking all the time.

TIME HAS COME to post calories EVERYWHERE!!! I have seen caloires posted at Subways in California now....WAITING to see that in Arizona. But not just Subway, we need them posted IN EVERY SINGLE EATING PLACE we frequent!

I like the alternative bagels and I also like the Bagel Thins by Arnold's. There of several varieties (I love the everything Bagel Thin) and each has 3 points.

I just saw a sara lee english muffin for 90 cals and whole wheat at Walmart. That is where western can be found too.

I am tired of lying to myself. I am ready to set boundaries and own my life. I want to treat myself like the treasure I am.

Thanks Sarah. We do not have Kroger's in this area.I am in OH and most have closed in my area. We have Giant Eagle stores and Heinen's stores, also trader joe's small store.
I will check to see if they have Western Bagel's Alternative?
I will check for Sara lee too, mini, whole wheat. Are these both frozen or in the fresh bread isles?
Thanks so much. I appreciate it.

Unfortunately the only places where I live which are in the guide are Taco Bell, McDonald's and Starbucks. Have to drive nearly an hour to find more than a couple of other places. That said, I have looked through mine though and saw many of those high numbers. It is enlightening though, especially if you have never looked at the nutritional info when you go out.

Eileen, have you tried Western Bagel's Alternative bagels? They're at most stores (do you have a Kroger-owned chain in your area?) and come in lots of flavors. Most of them are around 3 points plus for the whole thing. They are an average size. Or if you are in California, we have Western Bagels all over the place, like Paneras.

Sometimes I get the Sara Lee mini bagels (I like the whole wheat). They are small, but sliced and toasted with some ICBINB sprayed on, it's still a good bready satisfaction and makes a nice accompaniment to my egg substitute omelet. I think they are 2 points plus each.

I know how you feel. I also did not know the points plus on Saturday for a WHOLE Grain
Bagel, plain, nothing on it
When I got home I looked it up online for Panera Bread, thinking it could be about 4 or 5 pp
maybe. Boy was I shocked.
It was 9 points plus, so with my skim milk I had at home and grapes (0). My breakfast cost me 11 points plus.
Looked like two meals to me.
Then when I looked in our pocket guide, it said-bagels, any type 1 small or 1/2 of a large =4

I guess this must be considered a Large.....
A friend told me she gets small bagels, and they are less calories. If I did this I would have to freeze them. Has anyone ever tried a small bagel? can you suggest a brand that you like? emoticon

I like to try and check it before we go out to eat. Trouble is we rarely/never eat fast food so a lot of what is in it is of no use. Also do not even have some of the restaurants in our area. Luckily we frequent Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel, and Chili's . It is helpful if we travel sometimes.

An eye opener indeed! I keep mine in the glove box of my car so that it is always with me. I need to know! emoticon

my BF & I spend most of our weekends renovating an old house that's going to become rental property here shortly. We usually make breakfast & dinner but wind up picking up something for lunch. Saturday I forgot my dining out guide, I got a grilled chicken sandwich and a baked potato. He got the baconator a baked potato and some chili. When I got home I was adding up my points, and saw that the baconator alone was 26 points! THAT was an eye opener for him.
I remembered my guide for Sunday and we ended up going to tacobell. His usual order is a nacho bell grande and a burrito supreme. I saw that the nacho bell grande was 20 points by itself. WOW.. he was amazed.. and forever changed.

I tell ya that guide is a real eye opener. I'm going to get one to keep at my desk here at work too.
