I don't find this way of eating all that difficult when I travel. I take food with me that I can use if necessary and sometimes shop along the way but most restaurants are fine -- I just order a hamburger and throw away the bun. Instead of French fries, you can often substitute for a salad. You can even manage in MacDonalds or other fast food restaurants if necessary. The friends and family that I visit when travelling all know that I can't have carbs and they are very accommodating. I always do some grocery shopping so there is always food I can eat in the house. Meat can be bbq'ed without sauce and fish can be fried without batter. It's true there are times you might end up in a restaurant where there is nothing edible on the menu or on the buffet but I think that is rare -- In those cases I just order a herb tea if it's available and water if it's not (I don't drink coffee but that is an option if you do). Of course, the fact that I was a full-blown diabetic on insulin is a factor in my thinking and staying in ketosis may not be all that important to others. My point is just that it can be done. The main thing is to enjoy the people you are visiting.

Hello, team... I'm working on attitude and mindful thinking this week. We are traveling this weekend and there are lots of off-plan eating times that ALWAYS derail my efforts. I feel too good right now to mess it up!
emoticon
Friday: Family time at favorite BBQ place.
Saturday: Fish fry (we are to bring coconut cream pie... will buy one so I don't have to cook)
Sunday: Family meal after church.
Monday will be a traveling fasting day!!!
You know what carbs do to a person who is in ketosis... emoticon
My plan... portion control and lots of prayer. Fast between social engagements and drink plenty of water. Then... more prayer to deal with the cravings that are sure to come!!!

Spirit! Of course You are doing something right! Way to go! Isn't it wonderful when the clothes fit so much better? Looking forward to that soon-to-be day when you let us know it's time to go shopping for a better snugger fit! Yea! Keep SPARKING!

Linda, so happy for your ability to feel great when fasting now. I find it easier to fast if I skip all food until my evening meal. Once I eat ANYTHING for breakfast (even cream in my coffee) I get more and more hungry with cravings all day. Your husband sounds like he really cares and I think that's lovely.

KD, the comment you made about the dam breaking is so real for me. That is why I have difficulty with travel and eating off plan. So hard to get rid of the cravings. Thanks for answering the exercising question. I know I should exercise more... but I don't. I get some during work but my bicycle is collecting dust in the garage. Hoping to motivate my body into hopping on this spring.

Minx and Linda - both of you are doing great!! Stretching the hours out is training your body to run on it's own fat stores. Gets easier the longer you do it.

The call of carbs is strong though. Once you break the dam, so to speak, the pleasure center just wants that sweet/starchy stuff and it's hard to resist. This muscle needs a lot of work.

Gen - I will answer your exercise question. I have not been doing any. Either cardio or strength training. I need to put both back in, because my muscle tone is terrible and my endurance is not good either. I had to walk up a long hill last week, and I was exhausted. I used to do sprint triathlons - not that I was fast, but I had a lot of stamina and my goal was just to finish which I always did.

My plan is to do 2 days of each a week until I get into the routine of it. Maybe finish both days off with some balance/stretching/core work. I'll map it out today and maybe show you tomorrow if you're interested. I'm just starting all over at this point.

Spirited Minx - I LOVE your losses and encouragement! Good job! Learning and seeing results are wonderful!!!
KD - so good to read you are back and geared toward success - you have sweet upbeat spirit about you!!!
Am looking forward to a new step upward in my amounts of fasting and last night was good start
IF 4pm to 8am= 16 hours. happy and felt good... I am still amazed that I don't feel awful when fasting - for years I have gotten dizzy, nauseated and CRABBY if a meal was just an hour late - and here I am going 16 hours with nothing but water and routine pills taken on time - even with no food cushion for them!!! tummy is great, I feel good and woke up once in the night and giggled because I felt a little hungry but no desire to go to the kitchen! Very unusual for me and I love it!!! Hubby frets over me not eating but I tell him I feel good and ask if I act weak or crabby and he says "I guess you must be OK" This is all with me at home - I worry bout being out in public round food choices though.

Hope you are all having a great day. I woke up to a scale loss of another 7 lbs so I am having a super day. I notice the difference in my clothes now. I don't know if my macros are correct because I'm not sure what my actual body fat percentage is. I had to guesstimate. Still, finally seeing the pounds drop again must mean I'm doing something right? I'm still fasting for a 12-16 hour period, though so far today I have made it to 17 hours. I would like to eventually make it to a 24 hour period.

Today is a fasting day of lower calories. Mondays and Thursdays hubby & I eat an evening salad to cut back on the overall calories throughout the week. Finally...after 5 days of strict fasting and low calories I'm not craving carbs. Yea!!!

Leia & KD... your posts reminds me of myself... every two weeks I have to "white knuckle" the cravings after my travels and over-the-top sugar consumption. You are right... it's so important to get right back on track!

What kind of exercise do you like to do? emoticon

Motivation Monday! Off, off weekend for me. The backwards good news of it is my body is sooo much more reactive to off foods nowadays. Ready for the 3-4 days white-knuckle cravings amped up for hormone week to get back to feeling good.

Week's focus is steady and consistent -- between 14:8 and 15:9.

Bev -- thank you for sharing your story
Gen1 -- safe travels
KD -- welcome back, glad your events were all fun! love the meme.

Ladies I'm back! The 80th BD party for my father-in-law was wonderful. We had company both before and after, and I'm still trying to catch up on the laundry. Then at the tail end of that I had to go to Dallas (5 hours) for my best friend's wedding. Just got back last night.

Needless to say, there were some choices made that were not excellent.

However I did have a lot of fun, and am back and back on track.

This week I'm fully diving into keto, making my meals either 1 or 2 per day. That's it. Oh, I'm also going to start exercising since I've been making a lot of excuses why food choices matter more. I saw a girl at the wedding who looks wonderful (my age) and her flight back to San Antonio got cancelled so I gave her a ride back. We had 5 hours in the car to chat about eating and exercising. I'm fully motivated!!

Bev... Your journey is amazing. Yes, we have to listen to our own body and I really believe we all have to find the right diet that works for us.
My doctor has NEVER agreed with low carb dieting. Yet, when I lost 70 lbs with low carb he STILL didn't agree with it but told me that "whatever you are doing is working". I've had this doctor for 30 years and 25 of those years he has seen me obese. Yet he STILL didn't admit low carb is a healthy diet! After that experience I decided to say NOTHING about IF.

I feel so much better after consistently fasting this week. Next weekend we travel again and I am always derailing when we do this! The people all around me eat anything and everything. I have to get a better mindset and focus on my own health... have portion control... and fast before/after the off-plan meals. It is such a learning process and one I'm so often failing.
I need a shock collar! Zap! Stop eating!!! emoticon

The goal on my ticker is only a temporary goal -- to make it not look so daunting. I may have another 100 to go after that but I am not setting a final goal because I have no idea what a healthy weight would be for me. I did get down to 130 once but quickly gained back 10 lbs. I managed to stay around that weight for a few years but then the weight just crept back up -- there were a few periods of weight loss but the trend was mostly upward till one day in the mid 90's I stepped on the scale and saw the number 340 -- I jumped off the scale so quickly that I'm not sure what the actual number was. I moved to Ecuador in 2001 and started to lose because I was actually doing a lot of walking and eating a fairly healthy diet (not perfect but a lot less sugar and carbs than I was used to). However, by the time I came back to Canada in 2007 I was back up to 230. Since I had been diagnosed with diabetes in 2004 I knew that I had to keep my carbs down to regulate my blood sugar but it was not until I was back in Canada that I realized that if I really kept my carbs down I didn't have to take insulin. At this point I hadn't heard the word ketosis or ketogenic diet so I got down around 300 and just stayed there for a couple of years -- then I tried the Dukan diet and lost another 10 lbs or so but that diet was unsustainable for me. I stayed on lowcarb and lost a few more lbs but was lured in by a vegan guru on PBS who said his diet would cure diabetes completely. Well, his program didn't work for me even though I stayed on it -- religiously weighing and measuring all my food. I gained back almost all my hard earned weight loss and my blood sugars were higher than they had been for quite a few years. I realized that the only thing that worked at all for me was lowcarb and they only person I knew about who was talking about lowcarb was Jimmy Moore so I subscribed to his podcasts and bought his book. It was about this time that he started talking about ketosis and then about fasting and the weight has been trending mostly slowly downward since then. Keto Clarity came out in 2014 but it took me about a year to start losing again and that is when I discovered fasting. Then we moved and I didn't do much fasting during that time. My new doctor was fully on board with the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting but he wasn't so keen on the extended fasting so for the next year I just tried to keep the carbs low and be in ketosis (I wasn't measuring ketones at the time so I probably wasn't really in ketosis although I thought I was). After that year I realized that I really needed to be fasting so after my annual doctor's visit I decided I was going to do it whether my doctor agreed to it or not because I knew that it worked for me. So I have been doing mostly 3 days fasts since last summer and now the weight is slowly coming off again -- right now I am struggling with getting through 250 and staying there but there is light at the end of this particular tunnel.

Bev Anne - you are getting so close to goal - then maintanence will be a new challenge - do you have a plan or will you just continue your present efforts

I am such a slow loser - I started a new ticker the first of this year my true loss efforts began in spring of 2014 when I got two heart stents and began to change my eating to lower cholesterol and towards heart healthy - lots of reading and efforts Then another challenge came from Dr telling me to lose 30 pound immediately and prepare for parallesis from waist down that was at 238# I have carried that weight since children born 39 years ago.so I have lost 30# and kept them off - lose and gain and lose it again the next 4 pounds and still doing the same!

IF for Saturday 5:30pm to 8am =14.5 hours

My weight loss hasn't been very fast. My highest weight was about 20 years ago. When I moved back to Canada from Ecuador in 2007 I weighed about 330 and I have had a lot of ups and down over the last 10 years or so. Right now I am trying to break through 250 and stay there.

The 2 Keto Dudes recommend that you don't try longer fasts until you are keto adapted -- it is much easier then.

Bev Anne... You are amazing! emoticon I can't imagine fasting that long!
I'm focusing on fasting for 23-24 hour periods. Today is my third day and we are having salads each evening. Having salads sure does make meal prep easy for me! Wasn't hungry at all yesterday but today I am a little. I think of it this way... hunger means my body is burning fat and regenerating! So that is a good thing!!!
emoticon What I have noticed by fasting 24 hours the last two days:
*the scale reads -4 pounds which I'm sure is water weight
*my appetite is already under more self-control
*when I fast the veggies taste better!

emoticon on your successful EF, Bev Anne!

15:9 yesterday.

Girls night out dinner for a friend's birthday at...Thai...this evening. Our family eats early enough I can do slightly smaller regular dinner before and then the restaurant's super yummy lemon grass soup. No drinks, I think it would throw me too far off track right now. Hungry this morning, so will keep to usual 7am breakfast with kiddo to not get over-hungry and blow my evening strategy. Might still make a 12h eat window today.

5:30p-7:30am 14 hours and content to go longer but hubby wants me to eat with him and that is important at our stage of life -

We don't eat out nd rarely try any Chinese cooking - daughter does a lovely gluten free Chicken dinner occasionally when she comes home that meets my "need for" I know she uses stevia for sweetener and no MSG - makes it all from scratch. Sorry no recipe.

The only decent buffet restaurants in my area are all Chinese so I have tried them all. I find that every time we eat out at one of these restaurants that we gain about 4 lbs overnight. I don't know for sure what the cause is -- breading on the chicken, sugar in the sauces, the oil that food is cooked in, an excess of table salt in the food or some other hidden ingredient. No matter how hard I try to avoid breaded foods and sugary sauces I still come away bloated and with a weight gain that doesn't disappear for days and reverses weight loss because while my body is dealing with this it can't be losing any more weight.

For this reason, we have stopped going to Chinese restaurants and pretty much avoiding restaurants completely because we prefer buffets where you can pick and choose your food and they just don't exist in our area.

Just 13h yesterday.

Oriental food out is hard. I pre-planned their 'healthy menu' steamed chicken-seafood stir fry with a lower-sugar sauce on the side (no rice) then avocado and cheese as soon as I got home to get some fat in. I think still too lean, which left me over vulnerable to the last of the leftover birthday cake when the fam got it out for their evening snack. I think I would have been better off for day's totals with mongolian beef. OR eating before and a polite cup of egg drop soup?

Do any of you have go-to's for oriental food outings?

Was restless in the night and so extra tired today - took afternoon nap and pain levels went back down - wanting to avoid the pain meds if I can get through with rest and fluids and positive thinking - hoping the thermometer goes back up so some of the symptoms ease up - have good proteins and veggies planned for tomorrow - forward HO!!!

You girls with longer fasting are such an encouragement to me!!

I passed the 3 day mark about 4 hours ago and I'm going for another day. I'll probably go to about 4:00 pm to make it a full 4 days (96 hours) but it depends on how I feel tomorrow.

Fasting today made me feel better... 16 hours. Was my first fast in a while.
Had a big salad with eggs and walnuts for my meal this evening. It is very satisfying but I still feel bloated from the last few days which were so full of sugar. I'm hoping that fasting again tomorrow may help with the bloating. emoticon

15:9 yesterday

Excedrin migraine about lunchtime, but afterwards (after even the med caffeine rush) my calorie-cuts low energy and brain slog were gone and hunger through the evening much less uncomfortable. The story I'm assigning to it is that it was a 'sonic boom' breakthrough to fat burning. I'm adding in some visualizations the next while to let my body know light-switch clicks are just as effective and much more welcome than drama llama jet booms.

I'm about 43 hours into my fast and feeling great -- I am fully keto-adapted now and I usually have very little trouble fasting for 3 or 4 days. I listen to my body and if anything feels a bit off when I am fasting I end the fast. I have fasted longer but 3-4 days seems to be my comfort zone.

I'm not sure how long it took me to be keto-adapted. I was in and out of ketosis for a while and then I started to measure my blood ketones from time to time and pay more attention to keeping my protein within a sensible range. Then one day I realized that although I had eaten a few too many carbs (or too much protein) that kicked me out of ketosis I was quickly back into ketosis when I got back on plan immediately. That was when I realized that I was keto-adapted. I think that was probably sometime last Spring. I wasn't doing much in the way of longer fasts at that time but I started again at the end of July with a 7 day fast and it was much easier than it had been before. Since then I have been doing an average of a three day fast 2 or three times a month.

I love fasting because it is so easy -- no food to prepare, no dishes to wash. Of course, I love my food too and I eat a lot of fat on feasting days which keeps me satiated.

Everyone is different and what works for some people doesn't work as well for others. My experiences are my own and everyone has to figure out what works for them.

15 hr Sun to Mon. It felt like a moderate push after the 20hr day prior. I know I'm not yet fully fat adapted. I had the cals so did coconut oil in herbal tea after dinner to get through the evening, it eased the hunger but triggered reflux overnight. Won't be repeating that tactic.

Bev Anne, I too am curious to hear ins and outs of your extended fast. I've done up to 7-day juice fasts in years past, and I'm curious about in what ways full fasts might present differently.

Question: How long did it take for you all to feel fully fat adapted? I suppose I'm wondering specifically about hunger suppression and steady energy.

Lela, super Keto macros and sounds like you are really getting this to all pull together - Happy for you and learning and being encouraged by your progress.

I cannot imagine doing a three day fast - I can't even get past 15hours! 14 is still more comfortable but occasional 15 is OK. But I learn and stretch the comfort zone a little consistently and I will overcome!!! Keep up your good works and tell us each step of the way and how to do it - Encouragement is needed for me to do this!

Sunday to Monday 14 hours and content.

Just starting another longer fast -- aiming for 3 days -- maybe more. I started sometime yesterday afternoon after my meal for the day. Didn't look at the clock so I will estimate the time around 4 pm so 3 days would take me to Wednesday at supper time but I'm aiming for Thursday afternoon and then I will see how I feel. The first day is always the hardest for me but it's purely psychological because I do love my food -- especially the food on a ketogenic eating plan.

I feel GREAT with how I handled this weekend. Birthday celebration Saturday I kept to 12h and made the best choice at dinner out (kiddo's choice) Panda Express (al a cart teriyaki chicken with sauce on the side) and thoroughly enjoyed a small piece of cake, leaving some on the plate as planned to practice mindfulness. Did 20h Sat to Sun with a 4h eat window at keto macros 76% fat, 19% protein, 5% carbs.

I won't lie, yesterday was HARD for me, but I did it and I needed to show myself I could. I credit you all on this thread for helping me with that resolve, it makes such a difference knowing others are actively working the same WOE that I get to check back in with. Fung's matter-of-fact words also helped, acknowledging it will be difficult at first but easier with practice.

In that regard, this week my plan is 14-15h six days with one 20h.

Fiber does not happen in my life either - I sometimes think I really should get more in but just does not happen - I do love my avocados!!!

Fasting plans for the week? I am the quiet, consistent 14 hour and occasional 15 hour and am content with that for now - I love to read about you girls' adventures but the steady routine is better for me right now and I am content with it. Getting the carbs down is greater challenge for me and I think more important for my health issues and it is working!!

Hi Sparkler's emoticon

Wow!! great job everyone emoticon
I've been hanging out at 15-16hrs most days. If I eat something that throws my system off Im looking at 18-24 hr fast usually 1X a week as a reset. That's really been working for me. Cauliflower/Sweet potatoe mash with Roasted garlic & Ghee turned out Amazing!!!!

Thank you all for your take on fiber. I have officially (just now) decided not to sweat it. I think fiber is promoted mostly to help every dieter feel full. I feel plenty full on LCHF. Before LCHF I didn't get much fiber either because I was trying to shrink my stomach (and it worked). So long as I am not stopped up, I'll forgo supplements.

What are you all planning for fasting regimes this week?

CTYONIT: Thanks I just had to try EF for myself, I think mostly I’m going to stick to my 16/8 but maybe every great once in awhile I’ll do an EF

Fiber I just try my best to get it through veggies

LJ: I’m in the PNW too, love it!

Fibre shouldn't be an issue on a high fat diet but if I do have a "problem" I will use a gentle herbal laxative that is made here in Canada by Wild Rose and is called LBT 3 Lower Bowel Tonic. This is very similar to "Dr. Christopher's Original Formulas Lower Bowel Formula Capsules" which are available on Amazon.com. The Wild Rose formula is based on Dr. Christopher's Original Formula so they are pretty much the same. Another fairly gentle solution can be Milk of Magnesia which is recommended by Dr. Westman. Psyllium Husk does not work for me and just makes the problem worse.

My ultimate goal: Echoing long, healthy life outside of drs offices and pharmacy lines. Messy lchf/keto and IF has gotten me from largely bed and couch ridden in 2012 to 'normal' everyday active and steadily healing from where I was told I wouldn't recover. I'm now done 'negotating' this WOE is an off-on option for me. I don't know what an ideal weight will be but estimate around 85 lbs from here. I want to be healthy, trim, and (beyond my former fat-but-fit) active to take in all that our PNW outdoors offer for as long as I can.

Fiber: I don't sweat it right now, trying to deliberately add fiber has always caused me problems beyond veg at 2-4 c a day, but known gut issues. Some trusted lchf/keto talking heads claim fiber is a myth along with the carb business, I haven't read into it deeply yet for myself.

More catch up later...

My turn for a question (2 really).

As you can see by my stats my fiber is a mere 5g. Even on days when I eat avocado the fiber doesn't come near the recommended daily allowance.

How much emphasis do you ladies put on fiber? What are your sources of fiber?

Ladies you are so right Heres to being healthier! Id like to be the healthiest I possibly can. Id like to avoid medications as much as possible. Just last week I had to have an antibiotic prescribed as a precaution for my root canal. As I waited (forever) for the script to be filled I realized it had been at least 6 years since I had to fill a script. My goals also include maintaining my weight, dodging the diabetes bullet, and combating PCOS--all possible with LCHF/IF

LJ Have a wonderful celebrationDr Fung would say have your cake & eat it too!.

Watchinw8that sounds like an awesome fastingschedule and great meal strategy

Feel free we have no monopoly on health. I don't expect to ever look good in a bikini -- way too old for that anyway -- it's more about how I feel and mobility.

Thanks for the lovely question of "what is our ultimate goal?"

My main goal is health - for me that includes heart health needing weight loss; avoiding full blown diabetes by managing carbs and weight, exercising to help with weight loss and maintain mobility into old age and advancing neuropathy.

I usually try to fast for 20 to 22 hours a day. I ate Thursday night it was Caesar salad and baby back ribs about for bones. And I plan to eat Sunday because we're going out to a movie and then going out to dinner. I find that doing a few 36 or 48 hour fast really help me to stay on track. I don't usually count my macros but I try to make sure I put lots of extra olive oil on my salad and try to eat a fatty protein to stay low carb and get some extra fat in.
