My mom used to make them. I remember her putting liquor on them, with cheesecloth over them while they seasoned (not sure if that's the right term). My aunt used to work for the old Hostess Bakery--the manufacturer--in both St Louis and Detroit. She sent me a fruitcake every year. I'm not a fruitcake fan, but looked forward to getting one of those nice tins that I'd reuse for the homemade cookies I used to make.

I remember my mother making fruit cakes when I was younger and they were fantastic. But the store-bought ones you buy today just donít taste as good and itís a lot of work to make one so I havenít had any in a long time but I love it

We've offered fruitcake to our kids on Christmas Eve, but they don't enjoy it as much as DH and I do. We order two fruitcakes every year. We order one from Assumption Bakery in Ava, MO. Those are rum-flavored fruitcakes made and baked by Trappist monks in the monastery there as a source of income. The second comes from Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas. It's loaded with pecans as well as all the standard dried fruits. In their literature, they brag about sending fruitcakes to sheiks and the Queen of England and lots of celebrities. We're in good company, I guess.

When we had weekly lunches, the other women looked forward to slices of fruitcake. They compared one with the other. Whereas I like Collin Street's better, many disagreed, saying they liked Assumption's better.

People have made jokes about fruitcakes for years, and I know I've had a couple really awful ones. I will never buy one from Walgreens again! But get a good kind. I guess they cost more money, but they are so good. It's definitely a holiday treat.

Have you ever given or been given a fruitcake?
