Unless I am super late or working a double, I get some exercise when I get home. My dogs won't take excuses when they expect me to take them out for a walk.
Walking my dog was what got me started on real weight loss!

Some of the nurses on my unit went to the supervisor/head nurse and asked to have a more consistent schedule (week nights/week days) so they don't bounce around so much. It seems easy, but she struggles with it.

Many of the night shift nurses are young mothers who do not sleep for 36 plus hours twice a week. Not healthy at all.

lOOKING AT HOW I CAN WORK THE SHIFTS TO HAVE A BETTER WORK - LIFE BALANCE AS WELL AS TACKLING THE INSOMNIA I HAVE FROM TRYING TO SWITCH MY BODY AROUND FROM DAY TO NIGHT AND BACK AGAIN. THIS DOESN'T HELP AS I GET TOO LITTLE SLEEP AND IT IS POOR QUALITY AT THAT. BUT THANKS FOR THE ADVICE IT HAS MADE ME THINK OF HOW I CAN IMPROVE THE SITUATION AS AFTER ALL OUR OWN HEALTH AND WELLBEING HAS TO COME FIRST.

Of course you are tired when you keep those kinds of hours. A lot of nurses like it because they see the four days off, but it is really hard on your biorhythm. It is hard on your health.

Try to have good workouts on your days off. Try to keep a mid range biorhythm so you aren't exhausted at both ends of your day. Sleeping in half days gives you at least a shot of not being totally off on your days on. Some days you will get up a few hours early, other days, you will stay up a few hours.

Leave home 6h50 and get in again at 21h00 or just reversed for night duty. Working 3 - 4 of these shifts / week with switch around from night to days and back again thrown into the mix. Always tired and listless. Just trying to run a home is too much despite some help from hubby. Some of the days off I need to sleep to be ready for the next day's shift so find I have not started my exercise yet. Anyone in the same position as me?

Since I can never be sure when I will get out of work, I need to get my run in the morning before work. It is rough getting up at $:30 am. Running is what really helps me to maintain all the success I've had over the past year!

I find it almost impossible to work out after work. I have to drag myself out of bed early to get my workout in before work. I always feel great after I do it, but I dread the alarm every morning!!!

I work 12 hr shifts and it's about a 30 minute commute one way. And some days I do have to stay over to complete paper work and my charts. So I do try to make up for the days I that I work but dont workout. I typically do 3 12 day shifts so on my 4 days off I get in some really good exercise and workouts. But it good to know that I am not alone and it is really hard for other nurses to workout after they have worked all day.

God Bless,

i work 12 hr shifts and find it almost impossible to work out on the days that i work, especially if it's been a really rough day and i had to stay over to catch up on charting. If i do find the energy to work out on those days I've found that if i do it immediately after i get home i've got a better chance than if i wait til later. I dont beat myself up too badly if i dont work out on those days though. I figure i've got 4 days off a week to get my workouts in. You could also try maybe just doing one or two of Nicole's 10 minute workouts on the days you work.. At least that way you could say that you did something. :)

I work 12+ hours and with commute and the time it takes to "catch up" at the end of the shift, I'm often gone a lot longer than that. It is impossible to do much more than eat and go to bed, but we have very physical jobs, so I don't worry a lot about working out those days and do more on my days off.

I think you are doing great - if you can work out on days you don't work - working `12hrs and an hour drive - my goodness - you have no time for anything but ...surviving your schedule. Be good to yourself and concentrate on the days you can work out and eat well and healthy when working. Good luck

I do 12 hrs and have a 1 hr commute one way. Absolutely no time for anything but eat, sleep and work. But only working 2 nights a week helps!

Do you work 8 or 12 hrs shifts?
I work 8 shifts and if i'm on days - if i don't go immediately after work - then it's over - i don't get to the gym. It's easier when i'm on afternoons - i can go before work. Hope it helps. It is still a promise to yourself - we are good at keeping our word or promises or duties, at work - as nurses, we pride ourselves on "being there" - now be there for yourself!! emoticon

Just wondering if any other nurses find it hard to workout or exercise after working all day or night? I do great on my days off but on days I work when I get home I'm just to tired to exercise. I do great on my days off and I really get in some good workouts. So does anyone have any secrets to getting in a quick workout after a day at work? emoticon
