Photos?

I was taking photos of Lake Atilan when my camera phone fell off the balcony and rolled down the cliff. Think I lost everything as they were saved to phone, not SD card.

My Ausssie friend is supposed to email me some photos, likewise my hostess, but other people's photos is all you'll get.

I am bummed because now I need to order a new phone and all the phones are more high tech than the one I had, and yipes, I have to learn to use the phone again, and transfer all my stuff, if that's possible. Why is it that with age I hate learning new technologies? I'm not that way with other subjects, but I've got a mind block about new technologies.

Have a great new year's eve and a fabulous new year.

Counting down the hours in 2011. Where did this year go? Why is it the older you get, the faster the time goes? Remember when we were kids and summer lasted forever?

Now the only thing that lasts forever is arthritis!!! Mine flares up in the winter in my knee, but I am relatively well most of the time.

We've been moving our older daughter's things out of our younger daughter's spare room this week. LOTS of exercise, but it isn't a fun kind. I got a Wii for Christmas and have been doing the exercise/dance videos. That IS fun, but I am out of energy for it at the end of the day lately.

I hope each of you has a marvelous adventure in the new year that you can share with the rest of us (positive, of course).

Ruth, waiting for photos!

Got on the home scale today. Good news. Even though I didn't have many veggies or fruit I lost six pounds in the two months I was in Guatemala. Must be all that walking. Clocked at least two miles a day and sometimes more than that. Just hope it doesn't slip back on that easily now that the car keys are in my pocket. That is the greatest new year's news of all.

Ruth - welcome back. I used to drink hibiscus tea - it had a lovely tartness if I remember right. I used to gather the dried bloom from my bushes. Now I can't remember where they were planted. 40 years in this house and plants have come and gone. I probably have a photo or two somewhere. I just ordered some of the tea from Amazon after reading about it lowering high blood pressure.

Jeanne - do you have caller ID? Can you get a restraining order to keep them from contacting you? Changing your phone number is a drastic measure, but if that's what it takes to get a break from them..... I wish you peace and a rapid solution for the new year.

Kay - have a safe trip and a good time playing with the little ones.

Ginna - I am ready to start tracking again - it has gone by the wayside with all the holiday gatherings and my scale reflects that! What do plan to write in your journal? Is it for weight tracking or a more general type of journaling?

Stay safe and warm, Spark friends, as 2011 winds down and the New Year's Eve celebrations begin soon.

Good Morning Everyone...and happy new year.

After a day of traveling and doing nothing, taxis, four hour bus ride to Guatemala City, taxi to airport, wait in terminal, plane ride to Houston, rush to get though immigration and customs and recheck bags, run thorough terminal, board plane wait on tarmac, sit in seat for 4.5 hour flight to Philly, wait for shuttle, arrive home at 2 a.m. EST. I am exhausted!

Today I'm cleaning house, washing, reading four days worth of emails and two months worth of mail, generally getting my act together.

First thing I did when I got through customs was to have a cup of Colombian coffee with half and half. Today it was Colombian with skim milk, but it is oooohhh so good to get good coffee again. I drank tea most of the time in Guatemala because the coffee was not good. I have developed a real liking for Rosa de Jamica, otherwise known as hibiscus tea. I had this in Egypt many years ago and loved it hot or cold, but have not found it in the US. I brought back four boxes of tea bags and a 1 lb. package of the dried flowers. I think there will be hibiscus flowers in my garden come May or June.

It is good to be back even though there seems to be so much to catch up on. It is good way to wind down the year and prepare for a new one.

Saludos to all my Sparkers. May you have a sparkling new year.

Jeanne, I do hope that your tenants will be evicted soon without much expense.

Ginny, you make sense with the tracking. I'm still snacking some.

We are going to Sky Valley. Ga. in the morning. My BIL and SIL own 1/3 of a house. They have it often. They are taking their 2 grandchildren that we adore. We will be playing with them.
We are coming back Monday morning. My DH has to watch the bowl games in his recliner and I have a doctor's appointment Tuesday.

Happy New Year to all of you.

Sorry to hear about your tenant problems, Jeanne. That is an awful situation in which to be stuck. I hope it resolves early in the year.

I'm in total agreement about the tracking and limiting the wasted calories in our diets. It really does make one feel better. We can all think on this as the new year starts.

Have a nice day!

Mo...no, the problem tenants are still fighting one another and both refusing to leave. I am working on eviction, but attorney says it will take about 6-8 weeks (can we all survive?) They actually called to complain on Christmas Day (and nearly every other day too). I think I will change my phone number.

Both have said they will fight eviction, so it could be a LONG, expensive process...

On a brighter note...I am using this week off work to get organized, motivated and DO what I need to do. So far it hasn't been bad. Excercize, drinking water, watching and tracking foods. Already I feel SO much better. Why do we ever let that go?

Good morning and one day closer to the new year.

Thanks for responding with encouragement on the journal. My journal is very general or at least it is supposed to be. However, this one is not very well used. It is a pretty little book of "paper blanks" which have really remained blank. I must confess that the only writing occurred on January 2, 2010 and January 1, 2011. Now I have written some journal entries and some blogs on Spark, but my pretty little book doesn't even really qualify as a work in progress. My first resolution will be to fill 1 page per week. That really shouldn't be that difficult to do. Actually, after checking back I see that I did write two more times in 2010 - still not a great record.

Enjoy your nice weather, Jeanne. I love having mild weather at this time of year. And, that touch of "retirement" won't hurt either. I need to get busy putting more oldies on the MP3 player that was a Christmas gift from DH. I love just plugging it in while in the car and not having to switch CD's.

I'm with you, Mo, on ending the holidays. After Sunday many of us will join in tackling extra pounds or just being more healthy.

Jeanne - is the "problem tenants" situation resolved? Don't know why that popped into my mind today.

Ginna - a journal sounds like a good idea - is it a food journal or a more general type of journal?

I will be glad when New Year's Eve is over and it feels like I can start putting the holiday stuff away for another year. I will be helping with the taking down of holiday decorations at church, too.
I am ready to let go of some extra poundage that found my hips and belly in 2011, too.

Viv, I like that idea, too. Looking forward to the tips.

I have been enjoying my week off (between Christmas and New Year), as the University where I work shut down for the first time in history this week. I have to take vacation time, but it has been heaven, and I'm getting a little taste of how nice retirement will be (it's a-comin'!)

I've been downloading oldies from my CDs to my new ipod most of the day. Been fun to listen and know I can carry them around for those moments I am kept waiting.

Hope everyone is having a good week. We are in the 50s today. Odd for the Northwest in winter!

It looks as though this team has some ideas for starting fresh in the New Year. I'm so glad to see that as we all know that "Misery Loves Company." Actually that is a rather negative way to put it, but it is intended in a humorous way.

I am going to get my journal out and check on my resolutions from 2011. The fact that I have to "get it out" might be a clue that my results won't be good. I am ready to do the exercise of writing something down for 2012. Maybe I need to keep the little book closer at hand. I guess I could write them in a WORD document and use it as a background for opening my computer. Somehow that doesn't sound like fun and motivating.

One thing for sure - I will resolve to Blog more frequently. That does seem to help create a focus on some healthy habits. Any ideas? emoticon

I thought for the January tips we would have some fun and look into using pantry items for caring for your hair, skin and nails. Also some old remedies for colds etc.

I am pretty tired today. New resolve, maybe a bit too much exercise yesterday (too much for how out of shape I've become, that is). We're having fun playing with the new Wii we got with lots of dancing and exercising, games (physical) etc. It is a good answer for this miserable weather. I love to walk, but tend to let it go too much in the winter, so I'm hoping this will keep me active.

Sounds like everyone had a BUSY Christmas, which is the way it's supposed to be! The show went off without a hitch and we all had a great time. I hope everyone else did, too.

One more big Food Day and we can all get back to normal. Until Superbowl, that is.

Sounds like most of us had a good Christmas. I havn't been on Spark very much as I was extremely busy. All of my 22 guests said the food was great and everything looked very nice. I took the 26th off to rest. I have been eating things I havn't eaten since April, but since I am below goal, I think I will do OK. Will get out for a walk today. Yesterday it rained. Heading toward the New year and I am looking forward to it.

Sorry I haven´t been on the ´net the last few days. Hope you all had a great holiday. I went to the Lake Atilan , spent the day visiting small towns on Saturday and Sunday and spending the afternoon by the pool. My Aussie friend and I went to a wonderful restaurant that was filled with tourists (not that many actually) who were likewise celebrating a holiday away from home.

This is my last week in Xela and I will be saying goodbye to all the children and hope they have had some good experiences and some learning opportunities as I turn over their care to my Aussie friend who has limited Spanish.

Yesterday a new child arrived at the home on Christmas day. She is constantly crying, a natural reaction when being separated from her family, but with lots of hugging time and some smoothing words she will adjust and begin to have fun with the rest. I just can not imagine the kind of Christmas her mother must have had giving her away to others care on Christmas day. There are truly many sad stories here.

But last week, a little boy, named Luis, who had been at the hogar since an infant was adopted, and that is a truly wonderful thing for this little five year old boy.

I am glad that I had the opportunity to get to know these sweet children from various troubled backgrounds, but also hope that they will have a bright future, if not wby being reunited with their families, then by being taken into foster care o adopted by new parents. We can only hope for the best for them,

Do not know how much time I will have on the Internet this week, but to all a Happy New Year. I´ll be back in the US at the end of the week.

Ciao!

They're saying that we might get some snow along with some rain this aftenoon. Yesterday was near 50 with lots of sun shine. Today's grey & dreary. Doing the wash but won't be able to hang out.

Hope everyone had a good day yesterday. i spent most of the day playing games & putting puzzels together with a 5 year old.

We are home and safe. It rained most of the way. We had a nice visit with mother and my brother's family. My other brother went with his wife to visit her daughter. I missed him, but I understand.

Oh, copperpenny, good luck with your tests and getting your numbers better so the doctor is happier :-) I see mine the end of January and will take in several weeks worth of blood pressure readings.

DH and I have decided to go to Florida for February, get away from the cold and possible show :-) so I'm starting to get into planning for that. We'll go to my stepsister's for dinner tomorrow night and then my brother-in-law's the 26th for another family get together.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Saw the doctor yesterday & he said that I had atrial fibrillation & with high blood presure plus age, that I was a high risk for a stroke. He did EKG yesterday & would have the chemical stress test next Wednesday. It's the only test that I haven't had so far. He also said that I would likely be put on coumadin which I don't want. In case anyone doesn't know the stuff it's made from also makes rat poison. Great, huh? Speaking of insurance, I'm so glad we have ours! I used to work with some people who made fun of me for paying for insurance when times were really hard. It's sure paying off now!

We go to a candle light service tonight, Then to my youngest daughter tomorrow.

Hope everyone hasa good & safe day! emoticon

Kay, I'm glad your son's power came back on in time to enjoy Christmas! Amazing how utterly dependent we are on electricity for everything. I invested in a whole house backup generator just because I couldn't handle the idea of being without power.

So glad that your son's power came back on, Kaye. I must have really isolated myself getting ready for Christmas because I hadn't heard of the tornado. I hope that your DS didn't have any damage. Have a good trip.

Just wanted to wish the team a Merry Christmas. I probably won't get on here tomorrow, but I'm going to try to be more active on Spark in the new year.

His power came back on after 23 hours, and he made it home safely. The 3 of us went out and had a nice dinner. This morning we will have our Christmas before we drive to Savannah.

Everyone, have a great weekend.

Our son is coming home late this afternoon. They had a tornado last night. His power has been out since 5:00 p.m. Thursday. He sees power trucks in his neighborhood. A tree near him fell and brought down some power lines. Several transformers went out. I hope that it comes on soon. He doesn't want to leave until he knows the power is on. He has some concerns.
We will leave late Saturday morning to go visit my mother and spend the night. Then we will come home through Augusta where my SIL lives. She is alone on Christmas. We will eat with her and visit for a while. Then we will head home. It will be a rushed trip.

I do hope that all of you have time with family and friends.
Take care and don't snack all day like I have been doing. I think it's emotional eating.

Thanks Mo. Maybe this chemo will help Roz.

We had fun last evening serving supper to about 200 foster kids and their foster parents. They do like desserts. I was working that table, and didn't eat one piece of pie, cake or cookie.
When I got home, I did eat one small piece of chocolate. The brain needs to be working well for the next few days.

Update on Roz from Facebook -

"We met with the oncologist today, Dr. Vicky Lee; Rosalyn will be starting a very low-dose pill-form chemotherapy within the next 2 weeks. So bad news is, due to her age, and the fact the renal cancer had metastasized to her lungs and brain, surgery isn't an option. And, the good news is that this form of chemo has minimal side-effects.

Learn from Rosalyn's example in this case, and buy quality health insurance while you're young & healthy, it is a necessary expense. Also, do what she didn't do, and document any and all aches, pains, ailments, to report to your doctor-- this allows you to advocate for yourself more effectively. Also, push for a deeper investigation, don't buy into our culture of OTC remedies, whether pharmaceutical or homeopathic, even at the doctor's recommendation. Yeah, acetaminophen may make you feel better, but feeling better isn't equal to being well.

Peace and well-being,
Erik Michael Haraldson"

Jeanne, it's a chemical-stress test. Some of the "ladies" at the auction took great delight in teslling me of the test they've had last night. I'm sure that they enjoyed it a lot more than I did. No matter the age it'll hurt to not have something to open when the other kids open presents. After all it's not their fault that thy're at your home instead of with their mother. A book or some little something would be a nice thing to do, I think. Giving a gift to a "needy" child would be something to set up, with each child, for next year.. Living with divorced parents is enough to deal with in childhood. Just my way of thinking as I had such a childhood.

It's grey & raining here. Going to do some ironing & get some more work done on my orange room. Hit my little toe on a large piece of marble & it's black & blue. A result of going bare foot. Bill's going to make a coffee table for me.

Hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Ruth, I think your idea is a winner. The girls are actually "young adults" (13 and 16), and they can CERTAINLY get a better idea of the real meaning of the season if they give instead of expecting to receive. I think this may become a tradition at our Christmas Eve! Thank you for the wonderful idea.

AND...I think the other gifts will just go unopened until the girls go back to their mom's place (their other grandma's house where their mom will be). I, too, was a bit puzzled why she wanted me to take them Christmas eve when they live with my son and she only gets to see them on holidays and every other weekend. But then, that is probably why my son got custody. Not wanting to start problems, however, I'll just go with the flow. The girls are wonderful people and will continue to be so. I love having them, so that is never a problem.

Everyone have a great Christmas!

Judy, I do hope you Christmas will be special with so many family members. Try not to get stressed out like I did.

Jeanne, I think Ruth is right also. Giving to a needy child is something worth doing. It's better to give than to receive.

Judy, I bought a couple of those fold up tables with carrying handles (from Target) for big dinners. They will all be deployed at Christmas. I got tablecloths on sale at Macy's some years back and the whole living room, dining room, porch looks wonderful, and holds everyone. I've had to collect chairs which I keep in the attic the rest of the year, but they were cheap.

Jeanne, I think Ruth is "Spot on" this dilemma. I really like the idea of having them give something to a needy person or charity.

Heard yesterday that 2 more family members have decided to be in town for Christmas. That means 24 on the big day. Oh well, What are two more. Kids can sit on the floor, right?

Have a great day.

Jeanne;

If the girls are old enoughto understand reason, tell them that they celebrated Christmas with you on Thanksgiving weekedn and that Santa Clause has so many other children to take gifts to that he can not deliver them t o the same house twice.....Or you could tell them that they are already enjoying thier gifts and unlike other children who have to wait, they had their Christmas early. I would not buy into the guilt thing and buy another gift, much as you may want to. Children in the US already have more than they need. Instead why not go on the Internet and find a place where you and your grandchildren could send a gift to a child who has nothing. I think that might improve their spirit, giving to others instead. Then you would be teaching them what Christmas is all about.

My co volunteer a the Hogar.an Australian woman, and I have decidedto go to Lake Atilan. I was there two weeks ago, but it is so lovely that I am happy to go back. This time, we have a hotel with a pool, so after doing the lake toursto the towns we can relax, eat ouralmuerzo and take in the sun at the pool. Since she is Aussie, this is what Christmas feels like or should feel like to her.

Took the hats and dress up costumes to the kids at the Hogar today. They had a great time, and we had a parade and all the volunteers and staff with cameras took photos. They were so cute.

Ciao!

Jeanne - how old are the grands? My first thought was craft things, Even my older grandkids still like to sit around the table and color in my Christmas coloring books. There are a couple of websites where you can print out mandalas for kids to color, too. It sounds like you will just have them Christmas Eve - maybe their Mom is going to a party? You certainly don't need to buy them any big gifts, but if they'll be there when other family members are opening gifts....

Jeanne, that is a dilemma. If they are going to be there for a while, I would get them a very small gift so they would have something to open. Much depends on their age. You could have them tell about their early Christmas including the gifts. Why can't their mom take them for Christmas? I would think she would want too since you had them Thanksgiving. She doesn't make sense.

Time is getting short.

My ex-daughter-in-law called today and asked if I wanted my grand daughters for Christmas Eve (she is coming to visit HER mother and they live about 20 miles from us). Of course I would love to have the girls, but we had Christmas with them on Thanksgiving, because their mom was to have them on Christmas (they live with my son). So, now the dilemma....do I get them a couple more gifts as my daughters and boyfriend and hubby WILL have gifts under our tree? Maybe put off opening them until the girls go home? What to do?

Thank you all for the best wishes on my weight loss this past week. I know that most of my success was due to stress ( friend's passings, illness of family, having to say good-bye to a much loved family pet). However I will try to keep it off.

Hello Everyone;

Yesterday I joined the USC women fora visit to a chocolateria. As opposed to a factory, this is a little shop, Donna Pachá, run by her great great grandaughter. The history of chocolate, going back to the days of the Mayans, was extremely interesting. Mayans used the chocolate bean as currency. Today, that bitter sweet bean is used for candy, sweet drinks and few of its medicinal properties are taken into consideration, but we as women know that a bit of chocolate each day heads off depression and makes life worth living.

Today the women went to the hot springs outside of town, but I did not feel like I wanted to visit them, even though they may be revitalizing. I´ll get the full story later on.

Today most of the USC women were at the Hogar but they were put to work painting, as I had heard that some overstepped their boundaries yesterday by asking the children how they felt being away from their families. As social workers those may be appropriate questions for THEIR clients, but the Hogar personnel were upset that they took these liberties. They are here to volunteer, play with the children, but not to do a social workup and psychological profile. I must admit, when I heard what was done I was a little shocked.
These children have been traumatized enough being removed from their families without having masters in social work students aggravate them further. Seems a little insensitive to me. What do you think?

It will take lots of Goof Off to wipe up the paint splatters they left and repair the damage to the girls´ dormitory. Wish there were Goof Off to remove the other damage they might have done.

A new Aussie came to the cuna today . She will be here five weeks, and hopefuly I can train her to take over when I leave at the end of the year.

Have a great evening.

It's still raining. The weatherman said that we needed at least 13 inches of snow so we wouldn't have another drought next year. This was after he said if the rain we'd had was snow we'd have had 5 inches. Getting to where I don't pay much attention to them any more!

We took 2 friends to lunch yesterday & then ran some errands. One was to the post office 7 the man was really grippy, the lady was friendly. Course they had a line all the way from the entrance door to the counter, but still -----!

Today we have to finish wrapping the gifts & I want to get my new book shelves filled. Bill thinks I'll have space to spare. He hasn't seen my TBR stack! Did get my sewing room in order after I finished the quilt.

Am really dreading the test on Friday. I don't want to be stuck in the hospital over Christmas!

It seems like several familys are getting their kids pets for Christmas. Like in dragon lizards & the turpins that get big, slowly. Better them than me. But guess they're better than snakes!

Hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

HELLO EVERYONE¨

the weather was breezy yeaterday in the Highlands, kicking up dust everywhere...sometimes I´m glad I wear glasses, keeps a certain amount of dust out of my eyes. There was a market in Toto but the placed I really revelled in was a three Q store, much like our Dollar sores where everything is 3 Quetzales. I bought rattles for the baboes in the cuna and a nose aspirator for the little ones who cant blow their noses yet.

Pver the weekend nine women arrived from USC and they wilol be volunteering in the Hogar this week. I was happy to have two mothers who were happy to pick up and cuddle the babies. It is so amazing what can be accomplished with a little help. One of the young women is a Mexican American and speakes Spanish really well and wshe was a blessing to the group.

This week I will be introducing some of the last of the toys I hve brought with me.

Did I mentiuon that my quiet little Jose is now beginning to speak. When he wanted to play on the scotter toy instead of pointing and saying ëh,eh¨he said moto.¨I am seeing progress everyday. even in the children´s attitudes of not hitting.

Well, It´s time for me to go, got yo get back to the house for almuerzo.

Everyone, have a great day. I'm off to have lunch with a friend. We taught school together. Now we meet about every 6 weeks for lunch. At Christmas, we have a special place that we meet for lunch. It's always special.

Good Morning

Mo - Daughter and her family live about 75 miles from me. Takes about an hour and a half to get there. going Thursday to babysit as daughter and son-in-law both have to be at work.

Seeing Lydia today. We are going for pizza as today is her actual birthday. I took her out to a nice restaurant last week.

Enjoy the day

I have been MIA for a couple of days - lots of news to catch up on here!

Judy - I hope you are feeling better. I sure wish I could send you a few pounds...

Kay - I'm glad your day went well and hopefully someone else will take on next year - perhaps after thinking about for a while someone else will take a turn.

Viv - thanks for the lovely Jacquie Lawson card. I received her advent calendar from a couple of friends this year and it is even more delightful than last years was. Such creativity! I'm sorry about your friend who has gone into hospice care.

Jeanne - Christmas changes as our children grow up, doesn't it? Yet it is still Christmas.

Nell - I agree that adult children are wonderful. And adult grandchildren, too.

Naomi - your grandchildren are adorable. Do they live close by?

Ruth - how quickly your time seems to be going - I'm sure those little ones will be sad when you leave.

Kay, glad it went well and you can relax.

We did Christmas with our grandchildren on Thanksgiving (my son had them and their mom has them for Christmas, so we combined the holidays).

Now I'm a bit blue wondering what next Sunday will bring in the way of surprises. My own girls will be here but there is nothing like little ones at Christmas time.

My name is Jeanne (pronounced Jean ee); I live in eastern Washington State.

Judy -- glad you are feeling better. Hope you do not get another flare-up. Just a suggestion about your bone density. I was unable to continue with fosamax becuase it was giving me severe reflux. My bone density was too low so last year I was put on an infusion, reclast. It is a once a year treatment, and seems to have worked for me as my bone density has improved. Going tomorrow for this year's treatment.

Thanks for the recipe Viv. Doc did not indicate Diverticulitis but a Virus. Starving it means not eating or drinking anything for the first 6 hours of the attack. Then clear liquid for 6 hours. If Nausea continues go back to nothing for 6 hours and start again. After clear liquids you can do 6 hours of cloudy liquids but no dairy products. After that, if everything OK, you can start solids but no dairy or high carbohydrate foods for 24 hours. I just hope it doesn't come back.

All have a great Sunday.

Kay you should do what we did a few years ago, put all the names in a hat and have someone pick one while you are together. It has worked out well.
Judy hope you are feeling better, when I get this or my divitiulities(sp) kicks in I revert to my Mom's old recipe, always works for me. Brew a cup of strong black tea add 3/4 ginger shavings brew for 10 minutes and then remove ginger. Sip slowly, repeat every couple of hours.

Yesterday is over. It went well. I asked if someone would have it at their house next year. I got no takers. One of my husband's sisters stayed and visited after everyone left. She has a small condo about 45 minutes away, and would have the get together. It's just too small for 18 people.
We are going to see if someone comes forward. It was just too much.

Judy, take care of yourself. That is a low weight.

Viv, keep us updated on your friend.
