My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you dealing with someone with Cancer. It affects everyone. My husband is a eleven year survivor of Multiple Myeloma and my niece of breast cancer. I am grateful every day. My sister lost her fight with leukemia and my friend is fighting stage IV ovarian cancer. emoticon emoticon JudyK

Good Afternoon Sparkers. Having a lazy Sunday. Do plan to make a non diet dish for tonight.
Family has been craving Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Hungarian word for Paprika). Very rich with sour cream. Also put over a Hungarian noodle called Torhonua. Not spelled right, but the sound is there. To keep within calorie bounds I have eaten lower calories than usual for breakfast and lunch. Will see what happens.

Good morning all. Prayers going out to those dealing with cancers. As an 11+ year survivor of breast cancer, I can say much progress has been made. We can pray they do find a cure for this disease. But I don't think anyone in the medical field will ever be out of a job.

Wishing everyone a wonderful day!!!

Tried to catch up with the comings and goings by reading some posts. I did enjoy seeing what was going on. It really is a busy time of year.

Kay you and your DH were very brave taking the "live wire" shopping. I only last about 15 minutes in Wal Mart with our DGD who is turning 4 this coming week. She is a live wire also and into Fancy Nancy. I learn lots every time she visits.

Sorry for not contributing very much to the chats last week, very busy week at the office.
My thoughts and prayers to those who are facing challenges for themselves or friends and family.
Good news that Roz is home again.
Yesterday I did the wash and worked around the house, in the late afternoon I built a fire and sat and read with a glass of wine for a few hours it was nice.
Going to a Madrigal Dinner this evening with my Red Hat Sisters, should be fun.
Have a Blessed Sunday everyone.

Mo, enjoy the play. Losing 4 pounds is great. Enjoy the Christmas cookies. You only have them once a year, just watch portions.

Good luck to your mom and you for your mammogram appointments. I had mine in November, and had good results. It's always a relief.

Everyone enjoy this special day.
We are going to early church.

Thanks for prayers for Aunt Dot - prayers are always good.

Well - I have done more decorating for Christmas than I had intended. Once I got started - it just seemed to happen. I did put as much back into the storage room as I put up, I think. Maybe less...

Tomorrow we have a guest speaker at church and then I'm going to a Christmas play with my friend. Alida. and her family. It is a dessert performance so there will be cookies. I should be able to work it into my points. I was down 4 pounds when I weighed this morning. It feels good to be back in control of my eating.

My Mom has a cold or virus again. Her resistance seems to be lower every year. She did get her flu shot but there are always so many bugs floating around. We have Mammogram appts on Monday morning so I hope she's better by then.

Blessings ~ Mo

Hello Everyone;

Roz, hope you are feeling better after chemo and radiation therapies. You will be in my thoughts and meditations. I went through that 21 years ago and I am thankful everyday to be alive, despite whatever troubles may arise, it just means that I´m alive to face them.

Sounds like a wonderful shopping trip with the girls Kay. I don´t know if I will be permitted to give gifts to the children in the guardaria without giving to all of the children at the home. If not, I may just make a donation for something on their wish list.

Judy, I think you hit the nail on the head about pharmaseutical companies holding back. Just think, if there were a cure for cancer how many doctors, nurses, therapists, hospitals, rehab centers, not to mention all the related ambulance and van services and their drivers, companies who make medical equipment and their workers, would be out of work. No, surely, if cancer were to be cured another disease would have to take its place. The insurance companies would be rich not having to pay for cancer treatments and all the reasons for high priced medical insurance would fall throuh the roof. Our economy depends on cancer to keep going. Think also of the Social Security system collapsing. It would be
a blessing and a catastrophy at the same time. It would be a case of the cure being worse than the economic disaster it would bring.

We survived our shopping trip with the little 5 year old. She is adorable, but as they told me a "live wire." My DH said she was fun. She was not boring. She had a list for her parents and sister. She kept changing her mind. She was going to buy her mother slippers, but bought her mother a yoga mat. Her older sister did the same thing. She bought her dad a football, so I guess he plays football with some other men. She was probably the youngest of the group, and she got tired early with the shopping. She had Barbie twice on her list, but decided she didn't want any Barbie dolls.
We did get to meet her mother when we returned to the church, and she was very nice.
It was a good morning.

I did take a nap after we came home. Now I need to wash clothes, etc.

I'm waiting for an appointment for more tests. I hoping they can find what's causing all this.
I'm sick of being sick if that makes since.

I know how you feel about your son. But your sister knows your son. It was her choice & I'd let her deal with it. You have enough to deal with. They have no right to put this on you!

I'm tired so I'm hoping you all have a good & safe day! emoticon

Busy Saturday. Started out with a short walk after mopping the floors.

Mo, Thanks for the update on Roz. Really sorry to hear about your Aunt. As much as I hear about Cancers, it seems there is an increase in affected people. In my family there are 2 new cases. My SIL with Multiple Myeloma and my DIL mother with Pancreatic Cancer. There have been others who either succumbed to the desease or are in remission. As long as cancer has been around you would think that they would have a cure or better treatment by now. Could it be that the drug companies are holding back on research and development because they are making so much money? You gotta wonder.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Ruth, There is nothing you can do. Continue doing what your doing. It is much more important than a family squabble that will probably resolve itself before you return. If it doesn't, then you can deal with it when you get back if you feel you must. Do not let this interfere with the good that you are doing and the pleasure that you enjoy from your efforts.

Ah, Ruth, I understand about sons (and daughters) - don't know much about sisters though as I had only brothers to grow up with. It does seem that it is between your son and your sister and you are not liable since you didn't know about it until after the fact.

Jeanne - I hope the attorney has helpful advice on Monday. Harassment of landlord sounds like grounds for eviction to me - I hope you state laws agree. They sound like a couple of spoiled brats.

I have been decorating around the house. Put my angel tree up in the living room and the traditional one up in the family room. They are small - 4 foot. I bought them last year and they are so much easier to handle than the big one I've put up for years.

Kay - my church does a charity each month and then a big drive over the holidays. This year it is Youth On Their Own. I need to check out the list of needed items and do some "feel good" shopping soon.

Time to call my Mom - she has a bit of a cold and I took her bean soup yesterday - hope she's better. My dear Aunt Dot will be starting chemo and radiation next week. Darn. emoticon

Ruth, I was told many years ago never to lend money to family unless you never expect to see it again. I have been pretty much supporting my oldest son for years, but I am aware of what is going on. I would never pay back money some other fool lent to him, even if that fool was another family member (which has also happened). It's really hard, but it's harder to be away. When are you coming home? I'd feel the need to rush back. I don't know why but just being in my home gives me the illusion of control over.....something. I doubt that your sister just met your son, and she knew what she was getting herself into. She just learned that hard lesson. Beggars get good at begging and only go to the next person when they can't get what they want from the old sources.

For what it's worth, there is a group called Families Anonymous that helps with problems within families, problems that can tear families apart. They helped me more than words can say. I needed that support of people enduring extreme family pressures, people who weren't in my own family, in order to be able to sort out my real place in my own family.

Don't give up on your son. Keep trying. He feels guilty, and doesn't want to talk now. Maybe tomorrow will be different.
It's a sticky situation with family at times. We all have them.
Good luck. I will be thinking about you.

Blessings to all of you who are giving of yourselves and of your bounty to help the less fortunate. Not only aare you helping others but the economy!

I have a delightful Spanish teacher here in Xela. She is so helpful, but I must admit that you can never learn this language once and know it. Every country has its own way of saying things, and if there are twenty countries that speak Spanish there are twenty ways of saying things, especially the names of fruits, vegetables, trees, flowers and animals. Some might use the same word for a similar thing but with a different connotation. Soy muy confundida!
I might spend the rest of my life learning this language and never be able to speak it properly depending on which country I am in.

I am in a real pickle at home. While I have been here in Guate my son asked my sister to lend him money and she did without a promise of a payback or an IOU, and now she expects me to pay her back. Since I didn´t make the loan or know anything about it I don´t feel it is my responsibility, but my son´s as he is the borrower. My isiter and her daughter are both mad at me and I had nothing to do with it. I have yet to speak with my son as he is not answering my phone and his cell has been disconnected. What should I do? What can I do at such a distance?

Penny,
I hope that you find out some news soon about your spells.
Not knowing can worry you.

Jeanne, good luck with the tenants. I don't have any experience in that area. Maybe the lawyer will help.

Lincat, you are doing your good deeds. It does make you feel good.

We are going shopping in the morning with a church group. Our church keeps about 30 disadvantaged children after school. We decided to be the guardian angel for a 5 year old girl. They make a list of what they want to buy for family members, and I guess for themselves. They have guidelines and a limit. It should be fun.

I just got home from shopping at Kmart; this is where I worked and retired from, so I know just about every body there. I got gifts for my two nephews, one is 8 and the youngest is 5. They are brothers. So I will wrap these tonight, as I wrap the gifts as I get them.

The other day I was at City Hall to drop something off and I saw they had a Giving Tree in the hallway, so I picked up a couple of cards from the tree, one for a 1 year old girl, and another for a teen mom. These were going to a Family Services organization in town here. The one year old they wanted a toy appropriate for the age, and the teen mom wanted bath products, body wash, lotions etc. So I got her a gift pack. It's so sad, that these people don't have much of anything.

Hope everyone is enjoying this special time of the year. Weather has turned chilly here too with a possibility of snowflakes on Sunday, don't think there will be any accumulation.

Jeanne, I feel for you and really glad you are meeting with an attorney. Each state has different Landlord-Tenant Laws. I manage rental property and deal with issues on a daily basis and sometimes at night just dread answering the phone! Hope you get this problem resolved peacefully.

The holiday celebrations are beginning here and I'm searching recipes for holiday treats that are healthy to take to the upcoming parties. I really look forward to the fun & fellowship during the Christmas season.

Stay Warm & Healthy!

Yesterday was nice to be out but todays a bit chilly & it's supposed to be really bad on Sunday. The lady picked up the rest of the stuff we wanted gone & Bill's taking some stuff into 2 men tonight at the auction. You can even see spaces! but it's funny how excitited the lady became over the stuff. She was almost as happy to get it all as I was to get rid of it!

Am quilting a wall quilt for my DD in which the quilt top was one that her g-grandmother had begun before her death in 1957. It wasn't completed so we're making it a wall quilt. Her grandpa gave it to me before she was born in 1970. . DD is really excitited to be getting it as she doesn't even like the idea of sewing but loves old things - especailly that had been in the family for years.

Still having werid spells & have to have some more tests. I'm hopefull they can find out what's wrong before long!

Hope everyone has a good & safe day. emoticon

Lincat, I, too, will try the advice to keep a poinsettia this year. I've tried before, and mine just drop the "leaves/pedals" and get spindly and ugly. But obviously I was not doing it correctly.

Still fighting my tenants. Neither is willing to move out and the restraining order one sought against the other was not granted, so now they are back to calling me (2-3 times a day) to ask me to evict the OTHER one. Now my rental is fairly cheap and cute, so neither wants to move. I can't raise the rent during the lease, so it is attractive for each of them. I'm working on getting BOTH out, but the only grounds are "harrassment of landlord." Can calling me often be grounds enough? They pay their rent. I meet with an attorney to find out how to get it done on Monday. I think I've become their mother. Obviously their real mom did a pretty crumby job of teaching them how to behave.

Everyone have a good weekend.

Ruth, Hope that "distressing news" does not mean your son is seriously ill. Will be praying that things work out for him. The toy piano sounds like a good idea, but, as you say, how do you explain what to do with it to her.

Hello Everyone.

Had a great day, ate at San Martin, a restaurant-bakery. Took advantage of its delicious potato soup and had a variation of a Philly Cheese Steak, Guatemalan style...good but only a Philly girl like me knows how it should be done.

Later I bought a small piano play toy for the deaf girl as she liked the one I had used with the other kids. She tried putting it in her mouth, but I motioned to her not to put it there, but too play and listen. I think she picked up on the vibrations. So I bought one just for her as she does not really know what to do with toys. It must be so difficult to be deaf and not be able to communicate or to even have a idea or understanding about anything. She is three years old and still in diapers...no one can teach her anything, and with all the kids at the Hogar there is not time or money for special needs children. My heart goes out to her everyday.

Then I went to Walmart for comfort foods...things like fruit that I do not get at the house.

My sister caled me tonight with some distressing news about my son, but I will just have to work with family and friends to help him long distance. I will be back home before New Years and hopefully things will be straightened out by then.

Good night.

I'll try it this year. Since we won't have flowers blooming, I always put about 3 plants in the front yard before my DH's family comes for the annual holiday get together.

Poinsettias like cool night temperatures. They tolerate dry heat during the day, but being indigenous to Mexico, nights HAVE to be cool. Find the coolest part of your house, by a drafty window, or in the basement and set the plant there at night. I've kept poinsettias for up to March or April doing that. They're so beautiful, it's worth the effort.

Thanks for the advice on the Poinsettia. I didn't know if you could keep them.

Well, Thanksgiving was fun with the grandchildren, also my daughters and one of them came with her husband, the other one came alone, husband couldn't make it. But we still enjoyed it. Still eating turkey.

Guess I'll put up the Christmas decorations this weekend. Last year I bought a poinsettia, and I was thinking whether you could keep it after the holidays. So I went online and found out that if you fertilize it and of course water it during the summer, when September comes, stop fertilizing, just water when needed and it would bloom for the following Christmas. I tried it, and I have the most beautiful plant, it's grown quite large and has beautiful red blooms just in time for Christmas. I was amazed.

We have sunshine and it's 49 degrees. I love sun and can do without snow. It doesn't do much good here. We need it in the mountains, so we have good irrigation water in the summer, for growning crops.

On Thanksgiving day, we watched a Christmas video from 1979. It was fun. I hadn't noticed how quiet our girls were. The youngest was 7 at the time and did ALL the talking on the video of about 20 minutes or so.

My daughter thought she'd put it onto a DVD and send it to her for Christmas. We enjoyed watching it.

One year ago today my husband had his stroke. Then on Christmas Day he fell and broke his leg. I am so looking forward to a normal, joyous Christmas and all the busyness that it involves. I missed taking family Christmas photos last year because I was in the emergency room. This year will be well photographed, and a joy for everyone because Grandpa Dude will be here.

Leaving tomorrow for two weeks by the ocean. Have all my shopping done and wrapped because of being out of town. Also got the house all decorated this past weekend. This is a first for me (to be done this early) and it does feel less stressful.

Try not to get stressed over the next 24 days. It's a joyous time for us. Chanukah is also a special time for many of our members.
