Hi everyone.

Saw the doctor and he said I had a Gastroentestinal Virus. If it comes on again I should starve it. He gave a long detailed explanation of what I should do and to be prepared to lose at least 5 to 6 pounds. Not a good way to lose. Said not to worry as I would gain it back quickly as it is mostly water. I need to gain some weight back as I cannot afford to lose any more. He said my weight should be 120 to 125. I weighed in at 108.8 on Friday morning. I will try to add more healthy calories and hope this virus stays away. He also said that I would not be able to go off the Boniva yet. My Dexa scan was better, but I still need to increase my bone density. At least another two years.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Viv, I am so sorry about your friend. My prayers with her and her family.

It's an adjustment to work from home. Some are very disciplined, and some are not.
I think you will handle it fine. Also, make sure you and you fellow employees get together at least once a month for a catch-visit.

Sorry I have been MIA from the chats. Will catch up this weekend.
Been a very trying 10 days. December 7 our company informed us they were going to close the office and we were all going to work from home starting in the new year.
Have mixed emotions about this like everyone else.
Will not miss the hour + travel each way or the winter weather but will miss the people.
Then to top it off one of my people who is only in her 40's went into hospice care this week. Lot's off emotion as you can imagine.
Have a Blessed Christmas and Happy Hanakuh everyone.

Hello Everyone:

Kay, sounds like family fun, and it{s so nice that everyone brings something.
Judy, take care and get better before the holidays.
Nell[ What a blessing that your kids pitched in.
Something like that happened at my sister{s house a few years ago. She broke her foot on Christmas Eve, and had a cast put on. All the invitees tried to do the work but my sister, who is a perfectionist, couldn{t keep seated or still for very long. I think it was the hardest Christmas for her, not being abvle to do everything in the Martha Stewart fashion.

I had planned to go away for the holidays but I think it will be very hard to get reservations now that I have left it for the last minute. Then again, after last week{s debacle with the landslides and the hundimientos I am not sure I want to get back on those roads until I absolutely have to on Dec 29.

Children are amazing. Some of them will listen to reason, and when the reason makes sense,( and is not some lie to get them to do things) they will react with great humanity.
Today, my little Brian, wanted to play on the scooter toy. When I told him his five minutes were up and that he had to give the scooter toy another child he cried. I took him aside and told him that all the children have the right to play on this toy and that he will have more time later. I asked him how he would like it if another child hogged the toy and would not let him play on it? I think that made sense to him and he stopped crying and joined in another activity.

I also learned another lesson today. Yesterday I left a small train set with a little girl and today it was destroyed and all but two track parts were missing. I have absolutely no hope that any of the toys and puzzles that I leave behind will be intact one day after I leave. Nobody there cares about the children{s education for the preschoolers .
There seems to be more control in the classrooms with the older kids, but there is nothing for the preschoolers. They will go back to being left in front of a television set 12 hours a day and never getting out for recreation. They really need a preschool teacher but the budget probably can{t afford one. Two full time niñeras is all they get.

Kay, your Christmas will be wonderful. I do Christmas here for 14 adults and 4 kids every year, but I do all the cooking and baking. And wrapping gifts for everyone. It's the most hectic and wonderful time of the year. Last year, though, my husband broke his leg about two hours before everyone was to arrive. The kids were amazing. They finished up the prep (my middle son is the head of food service at a hospital so he can put anything together). They had the meal, opened the gifts, cleaned it all up and put everything away while we were at the hospital. There is nothing like adult children!! They make life glorious under good conditions and rise to the challenge under difficult conditions. You will have a wonderful day if you are surrounded by wonderful people.

Judy, I hope that you are better. It could be the season.

We are having my DH's family for our annual Christmas get together. There will be 14 adults and 4 kids. It's very hectic. After Mrs Vaughn died, we offered to have it the next year. I thought after we had it; we would rotate. It didn't work out that way. Our house is convenient and we have a finished basement for the kids.
Everyone brings something, so I don't cook anything. We have a ham. My husband made 3 different kinds of candy. My job is to get the house ready and decorate. We have been working on the house since Thanksgiving.
Our son is coming later today, so that will be a big help especially in the morning when we are getting last minute things together.
Say a little prayer that it goes well. This is difficult for me. It doesn't come naturally.

Good morning Sparkers.

Sorry I missed chatting yesterday. Was very sick with Diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. Have an appointment with my doctor today to see what is going on. It is not the Flu. Feels more like I did when I had the bacteria in my system. Could be the bacteria is not all gone.

Have a good day.

Hello Everyone;

Came home after volunteering yesterday and fell fast asleep for three hours. I had intended to get up and go to the Internet cafe, but, as you can see, that didn´t happen.

On the subject of weight I have maintained the weight I had when I left the States Nov. 3. I went into the infirmary the other day to check out the weights of the cuna kids and got on the scale myself. One would think all this walking would be good for me, but I think the torillas, beans, rice and few fruits and veggies is canceling out all the positive effects of the walking. I usually try to walk fast in the mornings, getting in some aerobic steps, if only 10 or 12 minutes. I love it and my work here in Guatemala, but I would really prefer to be in my own kitchen and have control over my calories.

I have always loved hats. As a fashion editor I had quite a large collection of wide brimmed hats, though not quite one to go with every outfit. Later, when I lived in Colombia I began amassing hats again, but to appear taller. No matter how energetic, ambicious, talented you are leadership positions are not given or conferred on short women. Most of the famous women entrepeneurs are probably short women because, unfortunately in our culture, short women and men are "överlooked."

Last weekend my cameraphone fell off the balcony into the garden three stories down. When I retreived it the glass was broken and I cannot take pictures of my Guatemalan adventures or post them when I get home, unless there is some way I can retrieve the photos I have already taken. But I´m not too mad about it, because these are my memories, not anyone else´"s . Just realized there is not an apostrophe on this Spanish keyboard!

After reviewing my email I am heading out to Hipepais to do some shopping for the family with whom I am staying.

STAY WARM EVERYONE!

Mo, I've had the same "forever" stamps since forever started.

Is it "forever" yet?

Naomi, I've gained too. New resolve needs to come from INSIDE before I'll get going in the right direction. Working on it. Not sure what happened.

I was born and raised in Arizona and about the only hats I ever wore were of the cowboy variety.

I wonder if the identity theft thing has anything to do with fewer people using the mail. I know I always take mail with a check or personal information to a drop in mail box - and I tend to bring the incoming mail in as soon as I hear the mail truck in the cul-de-sac. Then there is the price of stamps - I buy a batch of the Forever Stamps when I need them and the postal rates go up 3 or 4 times before I run out of them.

Blessings ~ Mo

Good morning all. Still busy with the Toys for Tots. I keep forgetting to ask when the last day is emoticon

Naomi - not sure how to answer your question because I don't know if you're using IE or Firefox as your browser.

After all these years, I still feel uncomfortable going to Mass without something on my head. Of course, being back in NY, my head is covered pretty much all winter emoticon

And I do my part to help the USPS. With my family scattered all over the country, birthday/Christmas packages/cards still get mailed. And although I don't mind receiving thank-you notes via e-mail (better than not getting any!!!), I still write/mail mine out.

Waves to all & wishing everyone a GREAT day!!!!

Good Morning

Does anyone know what to do when I have to put my user Id in every time I go to sign in. Prior only put password in. How do I correct this?

I am so disgusted with myself. I took a good look over the past months. I knew I gained weight - what a shock when I saw it was 16 lbs. since July.

On the positive - I lost 4 since Dec. 1

Good afternoon everyone.

Boy, do I remember having to wear a hat. We also wore gloves and god forbid that you wear pants. I do not look good in a hat so I am happy styles have changed in that direction. I do wish that people would take a little extra care in how they dress when in public. Sometimes I am embarrassed by the way the young ladies reveal themselves and I could do without seeing the underwear of our young men.

Times have changed indeed.

Nell, I agree about the letters/cards…snail mail stuff. I actually get a little annoyed when I have to get a stamp to mail something, which is really silly. That used to be my norm and I loved getting those love letters when my DH was away from home. Still, now I even do my bills on line with bill pay, so not much goes through the post office from me. When I get a card or letter, I do like it (hard to put emails in memory boxes), but I usually thank someone via facebook or email for gifts or letters. It IS a different world. Carol, I agree about “tone” in emails, but also in letters, so face to face is always the best. Just not very practical.

Carol/Nell, I remember (with fondness) those Easter bonnets we got as kids every year…and Jackie Kennedy always had one of those pill box hats in my memory. Maybe they SHOULD make a comeback. It seems like it was a less frightening time for our country, but maybe I’m just romanticizing it. There was Russia and the cold war, along with civil rights fighting. My only hat usually is a ball cap if I’m having a bad hair day, or if I’m in the sun.

Speaking of facebook, I visited Ros’s page recently, and she is posting there. Sounds like she has lots of recovery to go from her stroke, and is also facing chemo. Prayers and best wishes to her. She is such a dear lady.

I remember when you never left the house without wearing a hat. When I was little, I always wore a hat that to church that matched my coat. Both my parents had many hats. I remember the hat stores where Mom would try them on. Remember hatpins? Then hairstyles got pouffy and hats just smashed them down, so hats went out of style. I think the Jackie Kennedy pillbox was the last of the hat fashions. I only wear hats now for function: to keep my head warm or to keep the sun out of my eyes. To this day, many women don't wear hats even in cold weather because they don't want their hair messed up at work.

Yes, Ruth, it was great to get a letter from Josh. I intend to keep them all. I have copies of where a my g-g-g-grandparents (came ffrom Liverpool, England to USA) wrote letters. to their daughter (she went to Canada) and they wrote across the page & then turned it & wrote across it the other way. I intend to write him once a week no matter if he can answer right away or not.

It's raining again today. But it's supposed to get up to 60. We'll see.

Almost finished with the quilt. I'd forgotten that feed sacks & flour sacks tend to stretch as they're quilted so got to adjust for that.

I've been thinking about getting a hat. I think it's from watching too much Midsumer Murders, Poirot or Miss Marple!

Hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Oh Jeanne, I’m always starting at day 1. I have gained so much – not lost. Anyway I’m finishing up day 2.

Nell – I guess I’m just old fashioned. I don’t do facebook and occasionally I do write and receive letters. Though I do email at times I think calls are better. Sometimes you can read into an email something that isn’t there. When talking to the person the intent can be clearer .

Judy, it's been so long since I got a real letter from anyone that I am now just as happy for email or calls. I don't do letters myself anymore. And I don't even bother with Christmas cards because with Facebook it's all been said. It's a different world.

Good Afternoon Everyone;

Just got to the internet café after having lunch with my Spanish tutor. She is a real help to me, even when I´m not actually in Spanish class. She has imparted much of the Guatemalan culture and mental attitudes that help me to understand the people where I am living. She can give me the history and the background for the laws and customs that makes it so much more relevant living here.

This past weekend I bought a little plastic riding toy for the kids at the Hogar. I had to check on the weights of the kids before introducing it because it will hold children up to 25 lbs. The bigger kids were very disappointed, but I explained to them that I have brought many toys and puzzles to them which the little ones cannot use and they have to accept that they are too big and might break this scooting toy. So the bigger kids pitched in and started pushing the littlest ones until they got the hang of using their feet to propel them forward. There were some tears, but I suppose as long as their are kids there will always be disappointments in what they can and cannot do, but luckily they forget by the next day.

I found a multi-language bookstore/exchange today and traded in 5 books for one, and bought one, which the proprietor said he would buy back for half price when I am done reading it. Right now I am reading ¨The Help¨which was recently made into a motion picture, but the dialect sounds authentic...don´t know if it is, but sounds like Mississippi in the 60´s.
I have another book by Isabel Allende (I only read her in English translations) but I have read many of her books and enjoyed them, so thought this might be a good read.

Without being invited to watch TV with the family, and not having access to the internet in the home, I have to fill my night time hours with books, crossword and sodukos. But, really, those little ones can wear me out and I am thankful for the quiet downtime that I would never tolerate in the States. I´m usually in bed reading with the lights out by 10 pm. I´m not much on partying and drinking like the young volunteers who come here and barely make it in in the morning with out a hangover. That´s what happens when you get OLD.

Hasta Mañana!

Good afternoon everyone.

Ruth, your chit/chat is always interesting. The part that I could relate to was getting real letters from my children. After all these years of e-mail and phones, I realize how much more satisfying getting a letter is and enjoying sending my own in return. You have more of an opportunity to really say what you mean in great detail.

Everyone have a great evening.

Ruth, it would be a great idea to copy some of your posts into your personal journal here on Spark (or elsewhere on your computer). It would be a shame to lose them. I, for one, am really enjoying the posts, but I hope you are keeping them for yourself as well (or in a blog?). Take care with the UTI. Not a good thing to live with.

Naomi, I wish I could catch your determination. I always start each day positive, but somehow during the hustle and bustle of the day I lose track at times--and a slip usually follows. Holidays are tougher, I know, but I thought *I* was tougher than that.

Mo, what is your Monday night group? Just a group of friends, or some "themed" group? Sounds like a great time. I LOVE Lentil stew. I'm from lentil country!

Kay, tea time will be a great memory for your little niece.

This will be my last Christmas "working". We do have fun parties here (we have a departmental party on Wednesday and then a much smaller office party next week, where we exchange gifts and white elephant gag gifts (it has been a tradition for years). I try all year to find the perfect white elephant, but this year I falied. It will have to be something from my junk drawer.

Everyone have a nice day.

My Monday night group had our holiday party tonight at my house as usual. I made lentil stew, someone made roasted vegetables, another friend made smoked salmon on rice crackers with a pesto topping. Another friend brought homemade tamales that she had been part of the team who made them and the last member made a Kahlua-chocolate cake. We had a gift exchange and everyone got lovely things - it was all quite wonderful!
There is no way to figure the points but I'm sure I probably used up most of my weekly bonus - it was totally worth it!

DDIL send an email about walking through Winterhaven Wednesday night with Lil D - apparently he is really excited about Christmas lights this year. I didn't consider it very long - cold winter evening and a couple of hours of walking - my hips and back said "No, No, No!'. Too bad, but I have to know my limits. I think some of the older grandkids may join them.

Ruth - those UTIs are miserable - glad you were able to get meds right away. Your posts are so interesting - I feel like I'm traveling vicariously with you!
Judy - a belated Happy Birthday to you emoticon

Kay - your tea sounded lovely - a real memory maker for your great niece - and you, too.

Stay warm and safe, friends, as the holiday season gets busier!

Blessings ~ Mo

Good Evening Everyone:

My weekend at Lake Atilan was wonderful and horrible. I woke up early Saturday morning and had to go to the bathroom only to have a burning urine sensation. At breakfast the aid at the front desk made a doctors appointment for me and I boarded a water taxi a half hour later to go to Panajachel. La Doctora was very nice, took a urine sample and told me I had a bladder infection. I searched around for a pharmacy to buy the medication, ate some lunch and waited more than an hour for a water taxi to take me back to the hotel. I spent the rest of the day resting out on the balcony and taking in the sun and the perfect view of the three volcanoes that surround the lake. I was totally enervated and afraid to venture too far from a bathroom

By 7 pm the first of the antibiotics kicked in and I could eat. Sat at a table with a lovely Guatemalan ecotourist guide, her tourist from Iowa, and gentleman and his wife on a mission to operate on children with cleft palates, and a recently downsized PHD scientist from San Diego . But as I took the second dose of antibiotics sleepiness set in and I had to go to bed earlier than usual.

The next morning I ate breakfast with the scientist and we decided to explore the lake town together. I had to be back by 3 pm. so I could catch my shuttle back to Xela. The shuttle was late, and then once on the road there was a terrible back up on the road as there had been a landslide and only one lane was getting through on a four lane highway. Eventually we changed vans and the new driver hit more traffic because of an hundimiento where the road slides off into an abyss. He tried to detour thorough a small town only to be met with closed roads, and we had to back track. A two hour ride took more than 4 hours to complete, that's the horrible part.

I have seen so many of these landslides and roads sliding down the side of the mountain that I am now thinking of staying here for the holidays as one can never be sure of arriving at a destination. It does not seem that there is enough good engineering going into the preparation of these roads and that they are just put in willy nilly. But I suppose that is the risk one takes when travelling in an underdeveloped country that is 2/3s mountains.

Today the American School women came by with a snack box for all the children at the Hogar, a program and balls for every child. The kids were delighted with everything. My Jose el Grande spent the rest of the morning kicking and running after the ball, playing with Luis or me . He was the most delighted kid, a smile from earlobe to earlobe.

I have spent more special time with the deaf child and I think she is beginning to understand that she should not put the toys in her mouth, especially in front of me. I feel like I am making some headway with her. The other guardaria children do not play with her, although the older children do take he aside and include her. When I see the compassion in these kids, even ones who have not been shown a lot of love or compassion in their lives I am truly amazed at their outpouring of humanity.

It is nice to read of all your love and outpouring to children and adults in your communities.
CopperPenny, didn't it feel great to get a real letter from your grandson? I started writing to my step granddaughter when she was in the service, and even though we can email and phone each other we have kept up a correspondence, which I think she really cherishes (I know I do, getting her letters). emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Took a day off work for ....mental health I think. Anyway, it was nice to sleep in a little this morning.

Getting used to my upcoming retirement, little by little.

Judy, it is awesome that you will be off all your prescription meds. Good luck with the scan.

Congrats everyone on weight loss. I did not weigh this week. Afraid of what I'll see. But I'm back on track today, so hope that is a lasting goal throughout the holidays.

During this season, anyone losing weight is awesome!

It's in the 30's & supposed to have rain storms beginning tonight so Bill's burning the big brush pile. I was working on the quilt till he got AOL to come up so I could do my emails. Don't know what's wrong with it. Nor did any of my Spark messages come up on my Yahoo mail. When I get all caught up I'll go back & work on my quilt & watch some more Poirot. Sounds like everyones really busy.

Hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Good Luck Judy

Kay – they are not hard. I will send you a recipe. The secret is to have hot oil.

Taking a friend out to lunch for her birthday, Lydia, the woman I visit on Mondays.

Have a great day!

Good morning Sparkers.

Had my Dexascan today. Hoping that I will be able to go off the Boniva this year. If I can, I will no longer be taking any prescription medications emoticon I will still have to take vitamin D supplement and Calcium, but they are not prescription. I am praying for good result.

Everyone have a great week.

Naomi, I want to try to try to make the lakles. They have always sounds good to me.
Are they hard? We all need carbs for our brain activity.

Jeanne, it is busy this time of year. I'm going to review some court cases this morning, but the drive is short. Then I need to run some errands that are close by.

Everyone, try to relax some today.

It is such a busy time of the year. I SWEAR I spent 4 hours yesterday in lines and traffic. I was finished shopping, but went to get groceries and a couple little items I still needed. Took 6 hours!!! Anyway, even when I'm not on the chat, you are with me in my heart.

Love to you all, and best this holiday!
