Trying to talk myself out of my first 5k, I compared summer races in our area to my insanely busy schedule. I actually found one right down the road from my sister's house the first weekend in October.

Okay, not summer, but close.)

I can stay with her the night before and be right there when it's time to go. Now all I need to do is build up a bit more endurance without sidelining myself from over-eager training. (giddy grin)

When not running, I write sensual happily-ever-after books for the queer community. piaveleno.com

Great job, Doug!

I ran the half marathon in Palm Beach 2 years ago and it was a great race! You'll really enjoy the 5k!

emoticon I did it! I ran my first 5K this morning in 30:12 in beautifully sunny 65 degree weather. My first 5K since completing Couch to 5K was the Firecracker 5K in Brevard, NC, located in the picturesque western North Carolina mountains.

Not only was this my first 5K race, but it was my first race at altitude. Brevard is about 2,800 miles above sea level while I'm used to running at sea level in West Palm Beach. The altitude wasn't anything I noticed however.

What was most difficult for me were the hills! Near the beginning was a short steep hill and along the route were several other long inclines. I'll honestly admit that I walked for about 2 minutes total over the course. Hills are something very difficult to simulate in Florida, but I know I need to practice this more by running some bridges.

As I've read in many other people's posts, all that matters is you're still moving forward! As I've commented in the C25K team messages, the mental part is the toughest! This is what I need to work on, along with more mileage.

While my performance is very satisfying, I was still disappointed in not finishing under 30 minutes. Based on my training I felt this was achievable. Perhaps if I had toughed it out instead of walking, I might have. But still, I'm hooked on running. I also know that I need to test myself occasionally by running races. Don't know how many races I'll be able to fit in over the summer (not many during the blazing heat in Florida), but I know that fall will bring many opportunities nearer to home.

Plan to run the 5K in the hometown Palm Beach Marathon in December. Would love to hear from others planning to run either the 5K, half-marathon or marathon in West Palm Beach. Would also love to meet up with future friends planning for this run! Weather should be comfortable then.

Good luck to all others racing this 4th of July weekend!

5k in two weeks, maybe a 4miler on the 4th of July, but not really to 'race' it, just for fun.

Might add another 5-10k for late summer, if I find one I'm interested in.

The only race thus far I've signed up for is a local 5k (local as in down the street). I feel like I need to ease back into this.

My PR for the 5k was set in '95 and is 21~ or so. My team took 1, 2, and 3 in a dual meet. I knew the girls on my team would finish in the top 3, and I was chasing the #1 girl on the team we were competing against, to hopefully make that 1,2,3,and me as 4. Too bad she barely beat me! After that run, I was so heartbroken.

So, I'd like to win my age group eventually. I'm just starting out again, after a 14 year hiatus.

I'm hoping for a 25~ or so. I run with the Galloway method, which emphasizes walk breaks interspersed with running segments. It keeps me fresh and lets me bring out the kick in the end. Hopefully this strategy will help me do well.

Just finished most of my Spring races; 5K; 10 Miler & 2 half marathons. Set a PR in every one of them; stoked about that!!

Next race I'm registered for is Aug 1st, Chicago Rock n Roll (another Half), but may sign up for some local 5 & 10 Ks as part of my ongoing Spring & Summer training.

1 LSD each weekend
1 Tempo Run once a week
1 Day alternate between speed intervals & hill repeats.
1 Easy Run
1 Either Run or Cross Train
1 Cross Train
1 REST

Still determining whether to add the other run or cross train 2 days instead of 1 working on strength, core & Flexibility.

March 14th: Henry Weinhard's St. Pat's Day Dash (3.8 miles, two walk breaks)

April 17th: Magnuson Series Earth Day 5K. My third race and my second 5K.

May 29th: Magnuson Series 10K. I'm currently doing Hal Higdon's 10K training plan. I'm nervous and excited to run my first 10K. So far my longest run is 3.5 but I have my first 4 mile run scheduled today.

In January I made a goal to run one race every month for the rest of the year. I have races planned through September and I hope to run my firt half marathon then.

I have done 2 5K's myself this month. Coming up is the Wildcat run which I will be doing the 5K (trail run). Hoping to beat my PR.

Going to take a month off on May since there have been 2 months I have done two races and on 06/05 plan to do a Nitro 5K Trail run.

I've already done 2 5Ks since March 14 (one of them doesn't really count, since I walked it pretty slowly with my sister) and have a handful more scheduled for spring:

Ravenswood Run 5K on 4/25
Kickin' the Trails for Kic-Leukemia 8K Trail Run on 5/8
Get Your Rear in Gear 5K on 5/23
Run for the Zoo on 6/6

The 8K on May 8 will be my longest race to date, and immediately afterward I start training for my first 10K on July 18.

Papa John's 10 Miler this Sat

Ky Derby 1/2 Marathon 4/24th

Currently looks like my big spring race will be the Capital City Marathon in Olympia, WA in mid-May. The hubby doesn't think he can get the weekend of Eugene off from work (that was our first choice race).

I am a MARATHONER!!!
Tacoma City Marathon (3 May 09) - 3:49:13
... and I'm BOSTON BOUND!!!!
Capital City Marathon (16 May 10) - 3:36:52

...and instead of running Boston, I had a kid! And then 2.5 years later I had another one.
BUT, I've never stopped running or racing!

One of these days, I'll re-qualify for Boston. And tackle Goofy's Race and a Half. Maybe an ultra. Or a half Ironman...

I'm running the Boston Athletic Assoc 5K on April 18th. It's the day before the Boston Marathon and finishes on the marathon finish line.

I'm also doing a 10K the week before that, the Providence RI Half Marathon on May 2nd (the day after my 40th b-day), and another 5K a few weeks after that.

My first 10k is coming up first weekend in May too. I have a 4.1 miler (5k plus one) in late April. Sorry, can't remember the dates. We'll be revisiting our first 5k in Hayward, WI in June. (Hubby and me) And I'm reading running books to learn how to build up to my first half marathon. I want to travel to New York for that one, so it may be a few years, but I can start learning and dreaming now.

Jackie - looks like you have a "streak" going on... :)

I have no plans... Tomorrow I will be running a 5K with a friend who is new to running. I also may do a 4 mile run in April at my church.

I have no big race until July - Nova Scotia here I come... :)

I ran my first half in March, then have a 10k in April, half in May and another 10k in August.

May run another half in the fall, but haven't decided yet.

I have a half on April 11, and then a 5K in June - it is the race I first ran, so I like to run it every year!

Couple of stand-alone 5ks, some bike racing in April, then Duathlon season starts.

3 of those until June, and then a switch to bike racing again and some stand-alone 10ks.

This is great thread! I am looking for a summer marathon, so maybe someone will give me a good idea!!

I have nothing coming up except for a 10k on May 8.

Have fun everyone. And Jackie, WOWZA! You are a racing machine!

Tomorrow - Palm100 - 100 mile relay
4/10 - Rooney 5K (awesome breakfast buffet afterward)
4/18 - FAU Sprint Triathlon (my coach has a mock tri 2 weeks earlier on this same course that I am doing)
5/1 - Turtle Trot 5K in Jupiter
5/8 - Muddy Buddy in Orlando

After that I have no plans for anything, although I think there are a couple of sprint tris over the summer. After early May there really isn't much in the way of races. Just too hot. So I'll be working on my cycling and ST, and starting my marathon training later in the summer. I'm thinking of doing a 20 week plan instead of 16, and am looking at a combination of Hal Higdon and CoolRunning.com.

There are some local races that I try to run every year so those are on the calendar. Two are 10k's; I've already signed up for one. I ran a HM in March and I'm feeling a bit stronger so I might try another HM.

After the Chesebro 1/2 tomorrow, I'm not registered for anything until Napa to Somona in July...but I am considering a couple local 10ks and maybe the Rock N Roll San Diego 1/2 in June!!!

After tomorrow's 1/2 I will have run 23 race in 23 months...if I do the River 10K on April 11, I'll have 24 in 24!!! Something to shoot for??? We'll see how tomorrow goes and then I'll decide!!!

Spring is here. Some are gearing up for racing others are nearing the end of their racing season.

What are your spring plans?

It appears that TOBEARUNNER, JOPAPGH, and I are running a 1/2 marathon in Nova Scotia (Bluenose Marathon weekend) on May 23, 2010.
