Hi Susanne. Yes, walking is often something that, even with low energy (as long as we are still ambulatory) is good. However, the amount of effort required to burn the same number of calories exercising, as compared to being motivated to lose them with dieting seems like a big difference to me.

So; yes, exercise. But, I really needed to be almost militant about documenting calories. I found that, often, I was not eating enough, and my body was retaining weight for that reason.

I calculated my BMR online (basal metabolic rate). That's the number of pounds my body uses in a day if I don't exercise. I ate in that range two days per week (usually Wed and Sun). For me, that was in the 1200 - 1500 calorie range.

In order to lose a pound a week, we need to decrease calories by 3500 calories. So, on the other five days, I ate less than 1200 calories. Often in the 900 - 1100 calorie range, but, once a week, usually I had a "hungry" day and ate in the 700 - 900 calorie range.

I averaged a 4 - 6 lb loss per month, and lost 60 pounds in a year.

Hello and emoticon . Before doing any exercisee make sure your doc is in agreement. I suggest small steps to start...nothing too major or you'll be too sore to keep it up. Walking is generally good (no matter if you're a beginner or advanced). Also have ms so can understand being fed up with things. We'll willingly cheer you on!! emoticon

First two months of 2015 over. My weight has fluctuated a lot during that past two months. Highest: 140.8. Lowest: 131.8. Today: 133.2. Working on trying to get back to 121's or 122's, where I was prior to two flares with steroids in 2014.

Your welcome Barrister.

and, during these weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's, when you are tempted to over-eat, just remember that careful eating can occur during the holiday season too. If you wish to put your dieting on hold until after the New Year, it's OK to do that without feeling guilty.

But, don't use the holidays as an excuse to binge. Eat sensibly. Eat when you're hungry; stop when you're full.

Listen to your body. Make your goal, at a minimum, to not gain any weight during the holiday season. Enjoy the good foods, by all means. But, exercise portion control.

Thanksgiving coming up tomorrow. Enjoy your day!

And, enjoy your food. Please don't feel like you need to eat in a skimpy way. Don't binge. Just listen to your body and enjoy unril you are full. Then, quit.

Was in a flare in July. Finished with that and it's symptoms. Also finished with the steroids.

But, between my Christmas flare and my summer flare and all the steroids, I've gained about15 pounds during the past 8 months.

I worked really hard, 3-4 years ago, to lost 60 lbs. Time to get these 15 back off, before they mushroom to bigger again.

Hmmm. Food for thought. Not sure if I agree with all of these points, but, it's always good for me to hear and consider other perspectives on the points that I don't agree. And, we are, absolutely, all different. What works for one, does not necessarily work for everyone.

Hope some of you can take something from this.

Wow this thread hasn't had any activity since the beginning of the year. I thought there would be more responses since MS has a huge factor on weight issues. At least it does for me. I have been up and down from 156 - 160 up and down for a month or longer I think. Its IBS which is brought on by the MS. I need to lose 20 more pounds and its not happening so I see a nutritionist next Wednesday and next month I see a Gastroenterologist. Hopin to figure out the trick that my body needs to drop these last 20 lbs.
Ur talking about ur waist well mine swells and shrinks daily due to the IBS.

Happy New Year, everyone!

It's not unusual to gain some weight over the holidays. If that applies to you, don't become discouraged. Just try to eat sensibly at your New Year's Eve party this evening, and jump back into your diet and exercise program tomorrow or Wednesday.

Remember, it's a lifestyle. And, if we have a day when we don't clean our house to our satisfaction, we don't throw in the towel and decide that we've failed and we're never gong to clean it again. We just take care of it, and try to do better in the future. Or, if we yell at our spouse or our kids one day, instead of responding more appropriately, that's not a forever-failure either. Again, we just try to do better next time.

Keep on trying!

Hmmm. Interesting, FW. Thanks so much for responding. This is a "dilemma" that I've been working towards solving for quite awhile. Maybe some of us just can't get there.

107 pounds is the lowest that my BMI calculators indicate that I should get without being underweight.
- I'm currently around 116 lb, and close to a waist of 33". I'd like to be down to 31.5".

For me, that might mean that it is still possible, as losing an inch usually means losing 4-6 pounds. But, I'd be right near the bottom of my BMI. If I'd exercise, I suspect that I could lose some in my waist while gaining, instead of losing, weight.

Hi Faith,
My waist measurement is disproportionate to the rest of me.
When I was aiming for a good waist measurement, I was too low weight for my doctor and had no bum or boobs for my brother (gay) and husband (luckily, not gay).
I would aim for a safe BMI, rather than a perfect waist.

I have a question.

My current goal is to get my waist (is now 33") down to 50% (would need to be 31.5") of my height 63"/5'3").

I've read that, for health reasons (reducing risk of cardiovascular disease and Type II diabetes), that's where it should be. My family has a strong hx of high cholesterol (so do I!), and of Type I diabetes (which increases my risk of Type II). With already having MS, I don't wish to add any new diagnoses to my health repertoire.

But, I'm wondering what the "norm" is for others.
- Is a 50% Waist/Height ratio a goal, or, is it attainable for most of you?
I would like to hear your input.
