Yeah, buyer beware. I was actually advised by an MD to take obscenely large doses of whichever B vitamin it is while I was in Mozambique to protect against malaria carrying mosquitoes. And she advised me to pick the highest risk two weeks because the dose I was taking was toxic and not to be tolerated long term. So much for that!

Interesting. I lived in Florida a long time and the mosquitoes are terrible.

My dad was always "sweet" as well and they loved him. They do not like my mom at all. I've also noticed that they seem to like people that are drinking (maybe more blood brought to the surface)?

I do think some people are just more attractive to them than others. If you give off what they are looking for, it makes sense.

I really did like that the patch tested is actually worse than no repellent. Pretty funny.

This article was just on NPR www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/20

and I was disappointed to see that the article didn't really have evidence about the gin and tonic remedies - it's mostly comparing different DEET compounds. It doesn't even give evidence to compare picardin and IR3535 that one of the scientists quoted said was just as effective as DEET, nor did it even MENTION nootkatone, which I've seen heavily hyped in recent years www.npr.org/2011/04/18/135468567/rep

It seems useful to have head-to-head comparisons like this one - one researcher setting up identical conditions to compare two or more different repellants.
And then there's the one variable I always suspect they're not controlling for: deliciousness of the human skin. The graphic at the top referred to the % of mosquitoes attracted to "a hand", but unless it was one (crazy) person sticking his hand into two sealed containers at the same time and comparing the mosquitoes that landed on each one, I wonder how much of those % attracteds was due to the repellent and how much due to the hand. My, anecdotal but vivid, experience as a child was that _I_ was particularly appealing to mosquitoes. On camping trips with my family, I'd be all sprayed with Deep Woods Off and sitting in the smoke on the downwind side of the campfire and I got eaten alive while the rest of the family was protected just by staying within a few feet of me, because the mosquitoes preferred me to everyone else. My dad always said it was because I was "sweet", which I always took to be his describing my misfortune as the inconvenient side effect of a positive personality trait, but then when my husband got diagnosed with diabetes, we went on a camping trip before his blood sugar got back under control, and on that trip, HE got eaten alive and I was almost entirely ignored by the mosquitoes.
