Karine,

Well, you know how how in the written word some things get lost in translation...lol.

To all:

I have probably had more junk and struggled to stay in my range more this week during this challenge than I have sincve I started this in January. Whatever you do, don't use my calorie intake or food choices this week as any kind of example...lol. I have been logging extra fitness to try to make up for my indescretions, but that's not fool proof. It's not a lapse or anything, just a tough week. Time constraints and a few times where I didnt have many choices contribute a little, but ultimately I exercised my power of choice to make easy choices instead of right ones. It's not the first time it has happened and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I'll just keep pushing on because I'm in this to the end...I still have more than 100 more pounds to lose-I can't quit now!

Thanks to all of you for your support!

Aimee

I was just playing. I know the pudding is junk. I just thought I'd have a little fun withthis challenge. I'll forfeit the bonus points. Besides, I ate GREAT yesterday AND stayed in my calorie range AND stayed under 2300mg sodium. So it's all good.

Thanks or doing these challenges! You are making me sooooooo aware of my food. I just never looked at what I was putting into my body like this before. The challenges are great!

Love you!

Karine

Okay I know I was below 1200 calories but I left room for a snack just in case I get hungry before I go to bed. I am so sore from yesterday's workout and gardening that I am going to sleep early tonight to rest my poor muscles. If I eat any junk later, I add it! Nite, nite

Karine,

It's not that the pudding is bad...it's actually likely a good thing if it curbs a sweet craving AND if you can have it and stay within your calorie range. This challenge was actually just to bring awareness to each of us about how many calories we consume that are non-nutritional calories.

It's not that the "junk" calories are always bad things. They may however be things to cut out of our day if we struggle to stay in range. Further as you continue to lose weight they may be things that you have to cut out to continue losing.

These challenges exsist to create awareness and perhaps potentially take your weight loss to the next level. The pudding is still in the junk category...doesn't meanit's a bad thing-just means it's a bad thing for this challenge.

:-)

DANG!!! You're hurtin' me! I NEED my puddin. I mean, come on...
(Note: I'm stomping my feet.)

It's not like I'm eating homemade hot banana puddin made with whole milk, heavy cream, fresh bananas & a pound of sugar.

Oh yeah, baby! Oooh... Ahhhh... Yum..yum...

Uh... uh-oh -- sorry.... I got a little carried away....
(You didn't see that did you? Oopsy.)

Banana puddin. Oh my.....
That's another thing I discovered when I moved to the South; Banana Puddin.... Ohhh, it's soooo good.
(Wouldn't be a church social without it...)

Sorry I'm digressing again.

Anyway, I can't drink milk. (No, I'm not lactose intolerant. My plumbing just doesn't work like everyone else.) I can't have sugar. Actually can't have anything that ends in "-lose." That includes fructose, lactose, sucrose, etc. It all turns to sugar. So I have to be very, very careful with my sugar consumption if I don't want to get violently ill.

Therefore, I think my fat-free, sugar-free chocolate pudding is a very legitimate way of getting in some calcium. Don't you? After all, not all food that is good for you needs to be boring. Some foods need to be yummy (like baked sweet potatoes).

So what do you say, we call that a nutritional part of my meal plan.

Please?
Please?
Pretty Please?
Pretty Please with Sugar (make that Splenda) on top????

After all, I only need one (or 2 or 3 -- just kidding!) every day. I'm a 50-year old menopausal woman. You don't want me to get osteoporosis now, do you?

Tee! Hee!
XO,
Karine

LOL...well, it's kinda junk. Junk is typically something snacky with pretty much no nutritional value-or, you might have heard the phrase empty calories.

My baked lays-junk
My skinny cow truffle bar-junk
Anything that contains the word candy or cake-junk

If it helps, nutritional snacks could be:fresh fruit, nuts (in small amounts), yogurt or even cereal bars or fiber one bars.

Aimee,
Are you looking at my Shared Nutrition before you make up these challenges? I've been giving myself Bonus Points for no junk. However, I just read everyone's posts & it sounds like what I thought was a healthy "snack" between meals might be junk. Since I can't drink milk, I've been enjoying my Sugar-Free Jello pudding snacks. Is this junk? Please let me know before my arm gets stuck on my back (I've been patting it for awhile now.)

I make it count by parking in the student parking lot (farther away than faculty parking). I make it count by eating chocolate Jello Sugar-Free pudding snacks (feels like a REAL treat). I make it count by reading EVERY label BEFORE I buy or eat anything to make sure it's really worth putting it into my mouth.

You guys are cracking me up with all of your "junk" food confessions...lol! Ya know what-me too, but now that my honey and I have finished up the last of the Skinny Cow truffle bars I think I'll be earning my bonus points for the rest of the week!

For what it's worth, the last two days I NEEDED it to get within my calorie range. Ok OK, so I could have had a banana and done the same...lol! There is a bit of difference between need and want huh? I confess, I'm a junk food junkie!

OK...yes, I was VERY bad yesterday. There was however no chips, candy OR desserts. While I did seriously splurge a bit on the bagel, I ordered from the wood grill menu at Red Lobster which hardly justifies the biscuit and the lobster buttered mashed potatoes.

I figured if anyone would call me out on it-you would...lol! This is why I love you!

I suppose it's not worthwhile to make the excuse that there were no other meals or snacks all day? And that I exercised twice in an attempt to make up for it....53 minutes of cardio after the bagel and then another 45 minutes of cardio after Red Lobster. No excuses. I was BAD with a capital B!

AIMEE, I almost have to beg to differ with you on some of that Red Lobster stuff being, NOT junk. What classifies as "JUNK" exactly, anywaz? Hmmmm...
What do my fellow sparkers think of a Red Lobster Cheddar Biscuit, or a McDonald's breakfast bagel sandwich? I guess they do have some redeeming value, and are not "sweets" but oH the damage they can do!
You did stop at one biscuit, I have to give you credit for that! emoticon That is HARD for me to DO! emoticon
But that Micky D's sandwich! Next time you might want to consider an egg McMuffin. Less than 1/2 the calories, add a fruit and walnut salad and still be at only 520 calories for both! Just sayin'! emoticon Hope you still emoticon me!

emoticon emoticon
(I have no room to talk with the "Junk" I put in my mouth yesterday at Sonny's! Some of that stuff even had trans-fats in it! emoticon )

Psalm34v7,
Cotton candy is candy but I can see your concern. Consuming 1,264 calories is awesome! Obviously you were making every calorie count. We will have to see what the rest have to say.
Which brings me to me, I came in at 1,202 calories. I wanted a dessert and had angel food cake with strawberries and lite cool whip. Would this be concidered junk food??? cake is cake.
Need your help friends.

My calorie range: 1200-1500

Calories Consumed:
(5 points each day in your calorie range)
May 22 Sat: 1264 (I went to a rodeo today and had 1/2 a bag of cotton candy; that's 1 oz - said 2oz on the bag. Since I was at a rodeo, would that be counted junk food?)
May 23 Sun: 1324 (I'm a worst junkie than I thought emoticon )
May 24 Mon: 1415 - Junk for sure
May 25 Tue: 1211 - Junk
May 26 Wed: 1208 - Junk
May 27 Thu: 1361.5 - I had to find the restaurant's food online and add it with a calculator, hence the "0.5". NO JUNK!!
May 28 Fri: 1725.5 (included 1/2 of the previous day's left overs, so again "0.5") - had junk.

Live it Points Earned: 30
Bonus Points Earned: 5
(5 bonus points each day that you have no "junk" calories plus 20 additional bonus points for staying in your calorie range every day of the challenge)

Answer this question and earn 10 additional bonus points:

How do you MAKE IT COUNT?

I make it count by...
1) Drinking water when I become hungry/ develop a crave and waiting 30 minutes before deciding its real hunger
2) Planning a day to 2 ahead everyday
3) Working out (at least) an extra 100 calories extra for every time I eat something I shouldn't
4) Not making excuses and saying "no" when a friend asks me to go work out or do some physical activity (unless its physically impossible)
5) Limiting sedentary activities like TV and movies to be a treat only ~2 times a week - max.

Total points: 35 + 10 = 45

How do you MAKE IT COUNT?

Hmmm....let me see...let me count the ways, that I make it count...It's been a wild road for me since August. I am a totally different person then I was back then. Less of one, I guess you could say! When I first got the Wii Fit, I never used it for almost a year! Now, when ever someone wants to play a game, I always want it to be an action game of some sort! I use to Love the beach when I was younger, then I didn't go for years! Now I love it again. AND when I go WE HAVE to walk, jog, toss the Frisbee or the volleyball! I once LOVED to eat out! Food was my obsession! Food and large quantities of it, until I made my self sick from over eating! emoticon I am just now starting to enjoy eating out again. Thanks to different tools on the internet for restaurants that give me a heads up on what to order, and just the fact that I am in better control of my ordering, and eating habits now! I ordered all you can salad bar even, and did it all in moderation! emoticon
I have revamped my entire food shopping list! I spend much more time in the produce section now! I LOVE IT THERE! ((except for the prices and short shelf life) (I did find that if you get spinach instead of salad, when it starts to wilt you can always cook it and eat it still!)) I also, found Flax seed, which I grind up in a coffee grinder, and eat everyday!
I no longer search for the closest parking place! I haven't used my handicap parking plaque in ages! I DO NOT NEED IT ANYMORE! PRAISE GOD!!! emoticon
I definitely try to switch up my workouts as not to get in a rut! I do not have a gym membership, but still manage to find something interesting to do every week!
WOW! This is getting really long! emoticon
I have not even mentioned all the changes I have made to my diet!
Like, changing to the family of flatouts products

www.flatoutbread.com/
Bagel thins, burger bun thins, new lighter English muffins, and Alternative Bagels, etc. Changing to Fiber one yogurt and Chobani yogurt, Turkey bacon, skim or hood simply smart milk, reduced fat or fat free cheeses,
Here is a list of the calories in cheese:
1/4 cup reg shredded cheddar: 110 calories
1/4 cup 2% shredded cheddar: 80 calories
1/4 cup Fat Free Shredded cheddar: 45 calories
Egg beaters rather than eggs
Naturally more peanut butter
www.naturallymore.com/
Natural applesauce in place of oil in recipes.
I feel in love with Emerald Cocoa Almonds!
www.emeraldnuts.com/
I am a Pasta eater! Grew up on it! So I switched to Ronzoni Healthy Harvest!
ronzonihealthyharvest.newworldpasta.
co
m/pasta_coupon.cfm

AND only eat what the package calls a serving! WOW! is that a lot less then I thought! emoticon
Here is a Spark article that I used to teach me about portion size!
Picture-Perfect Portion Sizes (slide show):
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/slidesh
ow
.asp?show=12

I learned to pack in the protein in my diet as not to loose muscle mass. And I eat some right before bed every night! So, contrary to what "they" say, as long as you have allowed calories, you can eat late at night. It's what you eat that matters! The protein keeps your metabolism going while you sleep, so it does not have to work so hard in the morning to get going. AND a fast metabolism burns FAT better!
OK, that's just a few of the things that I have done to "Make It Count" over my 9 month journey! I hope this helps someone. IF it only helps one person, it was worth posting!
Blessings,

I drink more than 8 cups of water a day. It really does help me feel full. And I eat breakfast. I don't get the wild munchies anymore. I also monitor my wild child and keep her soothed with promises of snacks!

That is fine RK2008...those are still parameters that you have set for yourself to lose weight so that works.

I would suggest at some point going forward just checking your calories to see how close you are...I think it would help you simply because then you'd know how many calories you need to burn each day. Totally not necessary for this competition though!

I make it count by battling my perfectionist, all-or-nothing attitude (a lot of this battle is mental!). I make it count by using mustard when I want to use mayo. I make it count by finding low-cal, high-fiber, natural breads/wraps/etc. I make it count by seeing if I can add fruits/veggies to every meal. I make it count by filling water bottles to encourage my hydration. I make it count by tracking even when I know I am over (this week has been great).

I make it count by by parking further from entrances. I make it count by pacing at the copy machine. I make it count by making multiple trips for things at work sometimes when I'm not overly busy instead of trying to do it in one trip. I make it count by finding low cal snacks (like Skinny Cow) that seem decadent and satisfy that need for something scrumptious without blowing my calories. I make it count by plugging in extra workouts when I have over indulged.

We are going to do another 2 part challenge this week. This weeks mini mission is all about the counting that makes it, and making it count. The counting I'm referring to that makes it, is all of the info that goes into your food tracker.

Not to diminish the importance of all of the numbers there, but the one number we're going to be watching closely this week is your calories! This is the number that above all helps helps you stay on track. Last week we learned the importance of cardio in burning calories so it really pays to be tracking them consistently and correctly.

This week when tracking your calories remember to track every little thing. Sometimes, especially while we cook, we tend to have a little bite of this or that to check it for spice, but before you know it we've taken in these additional calories that we don't really think about. So this week pay really close attention and make sure you track every single bite, lick and taste. Live-It points will be earned by:

*Staying within your calorie range each day is worth 5 points.

*It's important to make sure your calories come from good nutritious food so give yourself 5 bonus points for each day in which none of your calories come from "junk foods". This is one where it might be easy to compromise so make sure you're honest with yourself about what junk foods are. If you don't know, feel free to ask the group and I'm sure you'll get all kinds of responses...lol!

*Award yourself 20 bounus points for staying within your calorie range for the whole 7 days of the challenge.

The second part of this challenge is about how we "Make it count." This lifestyle change is about making small changes to reach a larger goal. Sometimes these changes are something as small as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. The way we can make all of these small changes count is to stay within that calorie range and continue to make positive changes in our lives. For this part of the challenge I want you to tell us all, how do you make it count? It's just a one time post sharing with everyone some of the smaller changes you have made in the process of changing your life. Some of the things we share may be things that several of us are doing, but you may also share something that someone never thought of-somthing that might help them make better choices and positive changes and even change their life. Posting an answer to this question earns 10 additional points.

So get out your calorie calculators this week and let's MAKE IT COUNT! Are you with me?
