This week was supposed to finally bring sun. We've had 2 days, now back to gray. I think it's forgotten how to be Spring. I don't text or Twitter & have no idea how one deciphers that stuff. Maybe it helps to be 14!
And don't underestimate yourself. You're several notches above just "watching" birds!
My birding is best just around my feeder! Several years ago, I took a couple of classes & went on field trips with our local Audubon group. Fascinating & helpful, but more than a bit intimidating. We have professional field ornithologists locally & field guide authors who just rattle off acronyms & can identify birds by sound about a mile off. Educational but man, was I out of my depth. A local group that was more informal had small group politics issues & no longer meets. At 4 bucks a gallon, I don't think I'll be doing the field trip/bird chase bit anytime soon.
These days, I'm doing well to take binocs along when I walk my Basset. Somehow wildlife don't respond to him like he's an intruder! Deer or birds just give a casual glance & go back to whatever they were doing! My chubby little Cavalier, on the other hand, can spot a sparrow in a hedge 1/2 a mile down. It's the only time he speeds up on walks--and then, hang on!
