I ran a full marathon. My third. Seriously. When did I become the guy that can do that sort of thing?

Seeing real change in my life... that keeps me motivated.

I am motivated by gaining back all the weight I had lost in the last month; also, I am happy about how good I have been doing with my running. I am running faster and easier every day so I am doing some things right. Get my drinking/eating under wraps again and I will be just fine.

In a couple of weeks, my event schedule goes crazy. I'm running the Bay to Breakers in San Francisco, the Tough Mudder in Running Springs, the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in San Diego, and the Run Amok Mud Run in Quantico.

What motivates me? The confidence that I can do every one of these!

Despite taking the better part of a week off, I was still able to do back to back 4 mile runs on Saturday with two friends.

Knowing that I am in that kind of shape motivates me to STAY in that kind of shape.

Resurrecting this thread... Yes, I do that... wallpaper on my computer! :)

I blog about this externally, and call it a "Dream Sheet."

Below are the key concepts for my current "Dream Sheet" (maybe someone will find it useful) ;)

It's a more livelier version of Spark Points' "Put Up Visual Motivators" under "One Time Challenges."

---

1. The plan (be specific as possible)

2. Monthly rewards

3. Favorite inspirational quotes

4. Template of sample schedule

5. Snapshot of a slenderer self (if available)

6. Any other snapshots which may inspire or motivate

7. Grocery list

---

Random quote:
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ~Melody Beattie

I have never made a vision collage, but I collect a lot of motivating images and sayings in a "fitness" folder on my desktop. Maybe I need to make my tech version of a collage and create motivating wallpaper for my computer.

(And a puppy as a reward? How cool. Talk about a gift that will keep on giving you motivation!)

I made a vision collage - me back in skinny jeans, me hiking in the mountains, me with the new puppy I plan to reward myself with when I hit my first major goal - and posted it on the door so I see it whenever I head out for my walk. I think it motivates me to go a bit farther and at a bit quicker pace.

Enjoying the journey.....

My "get out and move it" motivation is down. My "work is making me insane" factor, though, is through the roof. Still, I'm eating right and even managed to drop a pound to 187.

I started gaining weight right out of the Marine Corps in the summer of 1989. I kept right on gaining weight until October 2005, when I decided to do something about it. I had a great run for about a year and got down to 183 pounds, then I contracted pertussis (adult whooping cough) in January 2007. That sidelined me and I stopped working out.

Fast forward to January 2010 and I weighed in at 220. I got my act back together and started working out again. And here I am now at 188.5 and steady losing.

Being close enough to see my previous low and knowing that I will be there soon... that is what motivates me today.
