Everything is working well with the Ancestry/Roots Magic combination. The only thing lacking is user motivation and I can't find an app that cures lazy.

Kind of on the subject, I just started a detective novel where the heroine is a "forensic genealogist". Didn't know there was such an animal. It's the first in a series, so I hope I like it. "Never Let Go" by Elizabeth Goddard. It gets 4.3 stars on Amazon.

Many just build an Ancestry tree online and don't have a copy of it on their computer or even a hard copy and if you quit paying Ancestry you lose access to much of what's online. I gave it to DW for Christmas, so we'll soon know.

I don't know. But the genealogy guy in our family said always keep hard copies because the computer programs are all just enough different that you can't really transfer those. But I don't know that he was referring to exactly what you mean in websites.

Okay, so a couple things have happened. I got my DNA tested and I am a human, so that got me interested in working on my tree some more. Number two, I'm actually finally getting my computer organized and am wondering this; if I join Ancestry and build a tree there, can I copy all the info I gather there to a program that is resident on my computer (like Gramps or Family Tree Maker) and retain it all even if I quit paying Ancestry? (Are there some things on Ancestry that can't be copied?)

Thank you STLOUISWOMAN for your response, I'll try to call them today as I bought a kit for my Dad and now wondering what to do with it. If they can do the cheek swap that would be great.

Check with 23andMe to see if they can do the check swab in cases like this. I know that one of the companies can & I think they are the one but it may be Family Tree.

So I ordered 23andme kit as my BIL bought this kit for my MIL and so did my son. My Mom was appalled at how much saliva she had to spit. My next question is....does anyone know which kits are just a cheek swab. My Dad has Parkinson Dementia and there is no way, we will get him to spit.

I suggest the Ancestry DNA kit ONLY BECAUSE while Ancestry does not allow transfer of DNA results from other companies you can transfer their results to many of the other companies & also to Gedmatch & Genesis Gedmatch which have kit results from all the major companies.

I chose Family Tree DNA. I read about many different companies. I also read reviews
of all of them. FTDNA have a huge database. I hope this helps you decide.
I'm still waiting for my procrastinating family to submit theirs kits. emoticon

I want to pass on this free download. Right now through Sunday, December 24th, this handy guide is available for FREE as a downloadable PDF. This guide has so much information about how to decide on the right DNA test to purchase.

I've read this booklet and made notes so I can make a decision on which DNA test is best for my research. I'm giving the DNA tests to my family as Christmas gifts. But it's really all about giving Christmas gifts back to me. emoticon emoticon

This is the place to ask any of your questions related to DNA. Hopefully, someone in the group will be able to give a helpful answer.
