Thank you both for your help. In the end, I decided to skip going back to the gym and just take the dog on a leisurely walk through the park instead--nothing taxing.

LYSINGR is right. Elliptical, stepper or bike will work your legs differently but you don't want to overdue things if you haven't done something like this before. Working core and upper body are a great way to cross train on a walking day. Just listen to your body.

I think it is probably up to you on how you want to handle it. I would be a little bit hesitant to do more leg workouts after having pushed extra earlier today as it might make you incredibly sore. If you do decide to try putting in more time cycling or on the elliptical, definitely make sure you give yourself plenty of time stretching afterward.

You could always use the extra time to work on another muscle group, like core or arms.

I need some thoughts on this topic. I went to the gym this morning and finished today's workout (1 mile) plus an extra half mile. My plans for the evening have fallen through. I'm seriously considering heading back to the gym to do some cycling or elliptical cross-training. I can watch TV there as easily as at home, lol. Anyway, since the workout is technically the same day, can I legitimately count it as a cross-train day? The plan calls for them on separate days, but I'm not sure about workouts done 12 hours apart. Thoughts?
