Wrapped up week 5 yesterday! My first jog interval started out kinda rough but I eventually found my groove. I finished up at 47:25 and am pretty proud of that.

I completed my 5K last Saturday. I beat my time so I was happy. The route had changed from last year so there were some hills, so I walked a bit but I am very happy about my time. 42.38. I will be looking for more races! This is better than anything I have done and I would have never thought I would like to run...:))

Hello @Moore, I have never taken part in a race before except my virtual races, and they had been so challenging and awesome at the end of the race. A little advice is this, breathe well, have your water and be determined to finish the race irrespective of whatever happens along the way, even if you need to walk it just be sure to finish.

Below is a link to an article about a first 5k by coach Nicole. I hope you will find some helpful tips to help on your way to the finish line.

Day 1 down. I ran at a nice trail near the ocean. The wind was against me, at times, but I finished the 36 minutes! AND I sighned up for the race at my town on saturday ! I can hardly believe I am doing this. If the race was in a different town or date, I probably would not have registered. Now day 3 is set foe Sat. should day 2 be Wednesday or Thursday .....that is the question. emoticon

My average pace was 12:10. I use RunKeeper, which also splits it according to each mile. Those ranged between 11:24 and 12:59. I'm just excited because 8 weeks ago my first 5k time was 51:10! Still about 3 weeks to go before my first real race.

Thank you, I set a goal for myself to finish in 49 minutes and I finished 49 min and 32 seconds. I was five out of nine in my age group. I was thrilled. I am going to start the program again in January. Now that I know it isn't going to hurt my knee, I am going to work on the program as scheduled. I couldn't do that last time, but now I am ready.

I am starting week five over because I haven't made a 3 minute jog yet. I am getting a new knee brace on Monday and I hope that will help with the swelling and the pain.

I am so happy for you and to know that the d-day is just 4 days from today. Just as I always do, try to focus on your breathing as you run, it makes it easier for you and help you stop thinking about anything.

Keep on keeping on.

The race is in 4 days so I guess I'll finish up the last of my posts in the week 5 section. I'm really excited for Sunday and I hope to have a time of about 45 minutes. I don't know if anyone is coming to cheer me on, so I'll have to ask someone to take my picture at the finish line.

It's supposed to be chilly too, so it's a perfect excuse to head to Sports Authority with my $14 rewards coupon and get a nice long sleeve running shirt for the event and long pants. All of my work out pants are capri length, I want the Nike Dri-Fit slim fit long pants, I am in love with the Dri-Fit line of clothes, so I'l probably get one of their warm long sleeve layers.

I'm 5'8" and determined to make a change now. Ten minutes of fitness daily. Too many times I've fallen off the wagon, time to make long lasting positive habits stick. Can I do it?!

I'm feeling much better, yesterday and today! I went for my normal jog/walk today and did 3.24 miles in 38:40. So feeling less sore and tired! Thanks for the words of encouragement and knowledge!!! I took a few days to recover and feeling great after today's training! Can't wait for my next 5k in November!!

Don't put off till tomorrow what you can accomplish today!

I stretched before the race, but forgot to afterwards. I did go home after eating dinner out to celebrate, but that was an hour or two after the race. I actually stretched out before bed that night, too. That is good to know. I will plan on taking it easy tomorrow again, just stretching and maybe try again on Friday to see how it goes. Thanks! I was very happy with how it went, too!!! :)

Absolutely normal, you just need lots of rest. Did you stretch after the run on Sunday?

It is also good for you to know that you just ran a distance on an unfamiliar terrain, so it is expected that you feel this way. I think you should take a few days off still so that you body can return back to normal.

I am so proud of you and your successes.

I am currently in "week 5" even though I had my race last Sunday the 6th. It was a true cross country race, with hills and valleys. At one point we went up and over a sledding hill. So I have been fairly sore in places I'm not usually sore it, but b/c of the type of course it is to be expected. The issue I have is my muscle fatigue level at this point. I took Monday off and just stretched my muscles. Yesterday I stretched but walked with my daughter and our dog for 1.8 miles at a very slow, relaxed pace. Then today I tried to get my training in, but grew very, very tired in the middle of it. I was able to complete 4 full cycles of jog 3 min, walk 3 min, totaling 24 minutes for my training. My warm up and cool down consisted of the remaining time to a total of 42 minutes for 2.9 miles. I came home and ate breakfast (Pbj oatmeal) and took a long hot bath. I am wondering if this level of muscle fatigue was normal? Or am I missing something in my diet that could be contributing to the level of fatigue I am experiencing. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Chriss, I can see that you are stronger than you think. Determination is very important in any race, you can do this and you will succeed in it. Running 7 min at once is not an easy task, when I practice, I try to run 10 min non-stop most times and the more I did it, the stronger I became.

WTG, Chrissy! From what I've been reading on your posts, you'll be able to jog the whole thing :-) I have realized and experienced in the past that what I could do was influenced greatly by what I gave myself permission and encouragement to do. Sounds like you are determined to jog the whole thing, and I bet you'll make it :-) Hydrate before you head out - soon enough that you can visit the restroom shortly before, lol, and eating something about 30 min before you start will probably help. :-)

OK, so today I stepped it up a notch, I walked 1 min, jogged 4 min and finished in the last km with 7 minutes straight. I'm confident that I'll be able to jog the entire 5k on Friday. I was a little dizzy at the end so I think I'll drink a protein drink before I go out on Friday (I ususally exercise on an empty stomache).
Ageishot, I pictured you telling me I could do it, so thanks!

I have a bum knee but last year I did Insanity anyway. I just have to take care of it (stretch, ice, rest, cross-train) and I'm ok.
I'll let you know how it goes. I'm running on Friday.

There is nothing "too ambitious" in reaching a goal which is what you are doing right now. The only way I can feel otherwise is if you do not have a clearance from your doctor before doing this (if you ever need one). But right now I think you are doing really great and you are ready for a race if you ever signed for any yet.

Most people find success in running by first running for endurance then running for speed. For me now even after a year of running my last 5K, am still running for endurance and not for speed. I want to always run without tiring out. You can even try running beyond 5K now so that when you are ready for the race, it will be a walk over.

Right now I'm walking/jogging. Week 5 has walk 3min, jog 3min. Do you think jogging the entire 5 km is too ambitious?

If you are already running a 5k right now, then no qualms. The most important part is for you to run without tiring out through the entire time.

OK, so I'm in week 5 and I realize I have done this all wrong! I only joined the team in my 3rd week; I selected the wrong program (I'm doing intermediate, but I really want to jog the entire 5k on race day, this Friday and I have been doing 5-5.5 km EACH DAY!! Should I go for it?

I went on the treadmill last night to do some running (it was a little chilly yesterday), but it was a bad run. My knee was really giving me problems. Usually I'll get the first ache during my first running section & I'm able to run it off, but the second interval of running, it felt like it was going to give out. Needless to say, I only ran three intervals & short ones. And I walked the rest of the time (total of 35 minutes of run/walk). I think I pushed too much between Monday & then Tuesday. But I was selfish & wanted to get another run in for the week. I've got volleyball tonight, horseshoes tomorrow, & then out of town on Friday & Saturday. The good thing is that I listened to my body.

@AEGISHOT, I would like to run outside, but I seem to push myself more on the speed with the help of the treadmill. If I ran outside, then I would be training better for the 5k. And I am not a morning person, so I run after work. If only I were.... This upcoming week, the temps should be nicer.

I think my gym must have good circulation with the air conditioning. It seems like a good temp when I'm there. But lately there haven't been a lot of members there at the same time. They all must be running outside. :-)

Hope all is well for everyone!

@GPEOT78, Its nice to know you are still hanging in here. I hope you enjoy the treadmill, I don't and so even when the weather is hot, I only go early for the run and go light too. I seem not to enjoy the treadmill at all, and I think my gym is hotter than outdoors.

TIPYRAIN, Welcome back!

I'm sorry to hear that you can't shake your cough. It will go away soon. Hang in there.

The hot weather doesn't help me stay motivated to run outside. So, I go to the gym then. I feel that since I pay for the gym membership, I've got to use it. Although this past week was crazy busy & I didn't have much time to get there. Or at least, I didn't make the time. I would rather sleep or do my other activities.

Believe in yourself that you can control your eating habits. Just take one step at a time to get back onto the wagon. I am doing the same thing. I have been bringing snacks with me to work or at least my drawer has better snacks in there (raisins, granola bars, 100 calorie popcorn). So, that's one step closer & it's better than going to the freezer to grab an ice cream sandwich. Focus on adding something different to your routine whether it's eating something new or being motivated a new way. And add something new into your routine every so many days or at least once a week. I'm going to do the same thing. This week is bringing snacks to work.

Hang in there. And stay motivated! You can do this!

GPEOT78,

I hope you get this! I didn't do it!:(( I just can't shake the cough from the illness I got! It's horrible. But, I probably wouldn't have done it anyway. The weather here has been so hot! Over 100* heat index or feels like temps.!!! I LOVE hot but, this is just oppressive! There is rarely any air moving when it gets this hot. If there was at least a breeze running MIGHT be ok. So... there you have it. I wasn't losing any weight anyway. I want to but, I just can't restrict my food for some reason. I see it, I want it, I eat it!!!! I know I have better control than this!!!

How are things going with you? I agree though. Family and living life DOES come 1st!!! We only have so much time in this life and if you can spend it with the important people THAT counts a lot more than being "perfect"!;))

@TIPYRAIN, things will get better one way or another. This weekend would have been the perfect weekend for an outdoor run, but I spent the whole time with my sister & her two boys (15 & 19) at a disk golf tournament. The temps were in the upper 60s here & it would have been comfortable, but family comes first. I did lots of walking on the 18 hole & 27 hole courses. But both days I didn't meet up with them until halfway through. So tomorrow I start again.

Good luck with your run. Let me know how you do!

Thanks GPEOT78,

I couldn't do the next run which would have been Friday NOT Saturday cuz it so hot the minute you walked out the door your shirt was HOT to the touch!!!! NO KIDDING!! I was mixed up on what day it was. That happens a lot! LOL!;)) Then Saturday I had a get together to go to with Hubby. I was ok when I got up but by the time I got everything ready including myself, I was exhausted! Then, during the thing I was experiencing waves of feeling ok & the next minute wanting to lay down and die. HAHA! I made it thru without incident, thank goodness.

Anyway, I think if I do my run as soon as possible tomorrow I should be able to get 'er done!:)) Things in the house can wait till later. It just is crazy hot here!!! HAHA!!!! ... the tummy comment! Ya! I think about weird stuff like that. I wish I didn't. I see women 3 times my size wearing stuff I wouldn't be caught in for a joke to make myself look stupid!!!! I know that's kinda mean. I'm a bit envious that they feel secure enough to feel good looking like that.

So, today is a new week and let's all do our best! I'm going to force it this week. I'm tired of being stuck!!!!
