Struggled with my run today barely running more of a shuffle but kept moving for 40mins. Disappointed but at least I ran

Hey, thanks guys.

I think there are two big reasons why my time was better than expected:

-- For the past 3 months of training, I have been running the exact same route each time. I know when the hills are coming, so I learned to pick up my pace just before the hill, and after I crest the hill.

-- During the last month, when I was asked to run for 30 ~ 40 minutes without any walking intervals, I kept track of my pace carefully. I used a rhythm pattern -- and tried to make up some music in my head that fit that rhythm. When I got used to the pace, I sped it up slightly, like moving from listening to a slow rock song, to more of a steady rock song or a dance song. Thus, my pace would slightly increase in a natural way.

My background is music, so the latter technique worked out well for me.

-- Finally, during the 5K race day, I tried to visualize myself running light and free, without pain, without worry, just enjoying the run. I looked up a lot more than normal; usually, I am looking at the road in front of me while running. The final time, I looked at the houses around me, people in my sight, etc. I think those visuals distracted me from feeling tired, or feeling some pain in my knees (which usually happens at the 20 minute mark...)

I hope my words inspire other runners. emoticon

Your time was excellent by any standard! I don't know what your goals are BUT you're a runner now! I sincerely hope you continue to run on a regular basis.
emoticon
Remember training runs should be 1 -2 minutes slower than your race pace. Your 5K pace was a 10:12 mile!

Finally got in my final and full, 5K to finish the program.

Everything felt right today -- the weather was cool, my pace was faster than usual and my body felt light. I promised myself I wouldn't look at my watch until the end.

My time? 31:41:60!!! WOOO!!
I am very, very pleased with this result. emoticon

Thank you everyone for your great support during my training. It was a big help!

Completed another 30 minute run today. The weather here is much cooler (22C) so the run was quite pleasant.

I tracked my miles using Google Map function on Spark -- I ran 4.7K. So, my time was a little faster than I thought.

I calculated a 5K run on the map too, so I hope to complete that on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Looking forward to crossing that finish line and earning my trophy! emoticon

Checking in for week 5. Just finished day 1. I only covered 4.5 K in the 30 minutes.

Very nice to read other members finished the program and ran a 5K in about 40 minutes! emoticon

I hope I do as well as everyone else. emoticon

Martha, I'm so proud of you. I know that feeling of finishing that 5K. AND you never forget your first! When I finished mine, I made a point to do at least one 5K a month. I've totally lost control now and do 5Ks to Half Marathons to combined challenges! It has helped me maintain my race weight and my healthy lifestyle! Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey!

I guess this is my last check-in. I ran my race on Saturday in 41 minutes. I was happy to have done it and wasn't really tired, so I should have tried to go faster! Now I'm going to add another mile to my regular runs. It's so nice to be back into it. Thanks for your encouragement.

Finished Day 3 of week 5 this morning! Yay! I can run again at last. The race is actually on Saturday, so I finished the program in plenty of time. I hope I run faster at the race than I did today, though.

Had one day left in the program and then I hurt myself playing soccer and got sick. I am at least walking for now. One day at a time.

How's the weather, Elaine? I'm not a big fan of treadmills as I will run in any weather here in the Tampa Bay area. However, when I travel, I will always get on a treadmill if the weather doesn't allow my run.

Just wanted to pass that on to all who have that option.

Really looking forward to my run tonight. Wanted to go for a walk but it is raining maybe later. Got my walk in outside it cleared up, still really windy though.

Woo hoo to all of us!!
Goal #1 met: I finished my 5K!
Goal #2 met: I did not walk at all!
Goal #3 (sort of a dream goal) met: I ran the race under 45 minutes. The official times aren't posted yet, but the little tracker at the finish line showed less that 38 minutes.
Thank you soooooo much for your support! I truly never could have done it without you!!

Jogged my 2nd 5K, did not walk any, 49.05, pace 15.47. On 8/18 did a virtual 5k in 53.86, pace 17.79. I am so psyched! When you do the actual 5K I think the spirit of competition makes you push more!! Good luck Mary on your race tomorrow.

Thank you MIRAGE727!! I'm going to keep this up. 5K virtual race, 3.1 miles, 53.86, 17.79 pace, I thought I would jog 3 days a week, 35 mins 2 days and 40 mins on the 3 day and on the second week 6th day a virtual 5k, what do you think? I'll cross train and strength train the other days. I'm going to sign up for a 5K for the 27th of Sept so want to keep training.

w5d1, 40 min jog, 2.12 miles, 18.52 pace, was feeling a little sluggish today but jogged anyway and was glad I did. I felt a sense of accomplishment afterwards emoticon

Note: This was actually my last run of week 4, got behind when I was out of town.

When you do your training for week 5, come by this thread and tell us about your accomplishments for the day.
(Example)
How far did you walk?
How did you feel on the day you did it?
Or anything else you want to talk about for your 5k training for week 5
