Rejoined 9/22/19, fell off. Starting again today. New dietary changes, not only Type 2 Diabetes, but also Kidney issues. So I cannot have any boxed, canned, cured or process foods. No chocolate or dark colas. All have phosphates and salt. Limited amounts of cheese and nuts. Other foods that have phosphates are limited too. Have more testing for kidney and high blood pressure.

GOALS:
Check blood Glucose once a day.
Take blood pressure and pulse morning and night.
Drink 8 cups of water a day.
Start walking 45 minutes a day, Dr. advised.
Stay in calorie range.

Need to stay positive and excited about each goal I meet. emoticon emoticon

Hi All! New here...first week. I was just diagnosed as diabetic a couple of weeks ago and have an A1c of 6.6, which most of you know is just barely over the cusp, however, I have been dealing with pre-diabetes for a number of years. I am committed to change and because of other health concerns have been practicing a new lifestyle change over the last 12 weeks and have lost 22#'s and got my lipids down to 203...the lowest its been in 20 years! Anyway, doc has allowed me to do this without Metformin and I am not required to do blood glucose testing at this point. Checking in for the day!

I rejoined 9/22/19. I haven't did the daily log, Trying to get everything figured out. I have started following the Diabetes Nutrition Plan, I haven't followed it 100%, but am trying. Did my grocery shopping the last couple of days for the plan, so hope to apply everything.

and then took bs # b4 lunch.... too high.... that helped with the "I wannas" - diabetes so sucks. this, me, us... we are worth this, eh?

Hello-Hello!!
I think that I finally have the site/challenge figured out-YaY Me!!

I set my goals (on here and in my paper "Weight Loss Journey" Blog). I am so excited to get this going!! I've lost 57.2 lbs since Jan 1, 2019 and am feeling much better. My Doc (I fell down stairs and severely rotated my pelvis) has cleared me to start exercising (seated to start) and has said to increase as I feel fit. I've read a few articles and have gained some really good information. I'm going to look for a walking partner and maybe buy a bike this summer!!

there's a lot to learn... and even then, I read it and not sure it makes a difference.. but the doing and practice helps... and then it is encouraging to see how it helps... this time, just keeping my focus on # of carbs (& total cals) for meals and snacks has helped me keep going.... I'm so thankful we have the sp diabetes tracker to help us understand how much is enough!

Yay You!

did some exploratory shopping for foods I can try (walked and shopped). forgot to take a snack with me... note to self... take snack!

emoticon I was surprised how many of the cereals had more than 5g/serv of sugar; mostly added sugars. I wanted a low sugar cereal for a trailmix type/finger food snack. Chose O shaped whole grain oats cereal (similar to cheerios) with just 1g sugar in a cup... but 20g carbs, so will try 1/3 or 1/2 cup with 1/4c mixed nuts and maybe tbsp. craisins or raisins for a snack. will have to put in tracker to see quantities

Just learned I am pre-diabetic which means a chance to educate myself on how to reverse it and also to eat healthier.
More greens and less fruit for a starter.

Week 1, Day 2
Tried to do an exercise video last night but my iPad did not cooperate. Hope for better luck tonight. Today is my first follow up appointment with my doctor since diagnosis. One month down with diabetes meds and two months since my bloodwork showed I have diabetes. Based on my blood sugar readings and an online A1c calculator, I believe I have gotten my A1c down to between 8 and 9. With more dietary changes and adding in exercise I hope to get it down to below 7 by my next appointment when they can do bloodwork again.

emoticon glad to see so many people doing the challenge! I am just wrapping up week 1, and looking back, it's been a good week - I am getting over a cold and so I adjusted my food types but stayed in the suggested carb ranges. that was a 1st for me, and my NSV for the week! woot! Think broth chicken noodle soup stuffed with veggies instead of crackers, whole piece/oranges instead of juice. I think it helped It did not trigger a voracious appetite and I am moving forward instead of starting over! Now to remember this... writing it down in my diabetes epiphanies/learnings notebook!

Ok... have a great week 1 everyone! Onward! See you week 2!

Week 1 Day 5

Hello you wonderful friends of mine,

I hope you are doing well today. I am also proud of everyone having losses and gains on exercising.

I have been doing real well on my journey this week. I have lost 6 pounds by staying under 1600 calories every day, drinking 8 glasses of water or more, exercising almost every day, eating proper foods, tracking and not eating after supper. I call it Kitchen is closed. If I do get really hungry, I have some fruit downstairs to munch on. This way I do not go to the kitchen and see things that will tempt me to eat. It works well for me. I try to keep myself busy and keep my mind off of food. I watch tv and fast forward through commercials so I do not see food, clean the house (good exercise), sort items and straighten things out, read articles on SP and eventually I want to make curtains for the house and go back to doing art work and crafts. Things to keep me busy. I can't believe how much energy I have right now. I feel like a force that can do anything.

I have been reading several articles on Diabetes and related materials. The more I read, the stronger I become. I feel like I can handle anything. I have turned down sweets that were offered to me and when Tom asks me if I need anything from the kitchen, I say no. I am most proud of the fact that I want to exercise. I am finding the short videos fun to do.

I wanted to post something I read yesterday:

Visualize what your life will be like.

Brandon Cole, personal trainer and nutrition coach, uses a powerful exercise when working with clients for the first time. He asks them to visualize what their lives will be like once they've accomplished their goal—what they will look like, and how they will feel emotionally and physically. He encourages them to get into as much detail as possible.

“The purpose is to get the person emotionally connected to that image,” Cole explains. “We have two brains: one rational and one emotional. The rational brain knows what they should be doing to reach their goal, but the emotional brain is impulsive and always wins out if there's a struggle between the two. If a person doesn't have an emotionally vested interest in staying on track to their goal, it won't be motivating enough to keep going when times get tough.”

This sounds like something we all should do. I am going to write it down and post it where I can see it everyday. I want to be healthy and more in control of my brain.

Have a great day Friends.

Week 1 Day 3

Day 3 already? This is going by fast. I will do my exercise tonight. My food calories, water consumption and will power are on target. Last night we had friends over. I drank water, had a banana and an apple. I passed up 2 chocolate candies that we're offered to me. I was proud of myself. I need to do this. I am going to do this.

Lifechangz - Keep strong. You can do this. I find staying busy and staying out of the kitchen helps. While you are having thoughts of eating what you shouldn't, go to a mirror and tell yourself out loud that you can do it, you are worth it and that you will try harder.

I have faith in you. We all have faith in you.

Have a great night everybody.

Alley

Week 1 Day 2. Chopped ice on the sidewalk, took Christmas lights down and threw stones on the icy driveway. What a workout. Pretty sore. Doing well sticking to my plan. Very happy that I joined this challenge. I seem to be more active and healthy minded. Hope you all are doing well.

emoticon Shirla! Have you switched over to the SP Diabetes food tracker? I use it to help me with the portions.

Mostly I use these things to help me see/deal with the carbs and how my bs#s are trending...

Although I am using the SP tracker to help me with meal/snacks carbs and overall cals, I also use a paper tracker/journal so I can make time notes, put my bs#'s next to the meal either before or after, flag/highlight weird #'s... and things like exercise, nsvs/struggles other things I want to note... I find the paper tracker/journal easy to flip back through to see trends... like what are my morning fasting bs#s or dinner #'s running or or or... I haven't figured an easy way to do that with the SP trackers... (and easy to show doc/nurse... I take it to my apptmts)

Thanks Lifechangz for the information, it is starting to make more sense to me now. I'm going to start this day by tracking my food on SP, haven't done that in ages, I like to write it down, but I'm going to try this way again. Then I'm going to go read an article.

Hi Alley & everyone joining the challenge this week :)

I have been doing this, repeating since August - as a way to stay focused on taking care of myself every day/help myself deal with the diabetes...

emoticon each week, I do a simple paper tracking - I print out the Action plan and on that piece of paper I make notes.

W. tested & tracked bs, food, exercise and read an article
th - ditto, etc each day

also note goals, nsv's, results, something I learn and want to remember... I still have my sheets and it's easy to flip back through and see trends - when I skipped stuff, the improvements/results...

this is kind of like everything - it can be a tool and point us forward - and help keep us going when we feel like quitting.... we're worth doing this :)

emoticon the challenge has links above the discussion forum for each week... right now, there's week 1. easy to click on it and the action plan then has links to different articles and suggestions to do for eating and exercise each week. I try to read an article each day for motivation (if I've read it before, it's a good brushup…) at breakfast time. seems to help me stay motivated

emoticon i'm looking forward to doing the challenge together :)

--my fasting bs#'s have been up, a lot, most of this week, and my other #'s also up... not quite sure of the reason... but it scares the bejeebers out of me and I am determined to do things to help it... hoping I can get it back down... i'd prefer not to do meds....
