The nutrition tracker has helped so much. I noticed when I really added that in and could see what I was eating, the calories and also the carbs my weight loss really started to move. I've been a lot more aware of what I'm putting into my body. I don't test my blood sugars daily because the doctor didn't say I had to yet (I'm pre-diabetic) so I'm not sure how they are. I've really starting using the exercise videos on here and they are great.

I love love love the nutrition tracker! It really helps when I am trying to stay within my calorie goal and it is so simple to use. So far, I have lost 8.5 lbs in less than three weeks and sparkpeople is helping make that happen! I am so thankful for all of the useful tools that they have made available!

Tracking food helps me see where I mess up, and how tomorrow I can and often do make better choices. It also helps me be more creative when I make the grocery list.

day 1 week 3
i am excited about this week as i am using this time to re-commit to the program. i have been at a standstill since nov 2011, including a gain of 4 lbs of the 26 i lost last year. last week i started exercising again & have joined a virtual 5k ending may 5. in october i did the 1 mile version and completed it in 30 min, so my goal is to complete a whole 5 k by the end of 2012 and i hope to be able to complete 2 miles by may 5th. i am also going to track my food and cut down on carbs this week, i BELIEVE that these actions will budge the scale next week. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I also get down a little when I dont lose as much. I"m kind of stuck right now had lost 12 and keep gaining and losing one pound the same pound. But when I use the food tracker I know how much fat I eat over my limit etc. that really is helping me keep track of it in my mind. Shows me to be more careful in my choices. But I am losing inches even if I'm not losing as fast as I want my clothes are fitting better and I feel better. My sugars are going down. I messed up yesterday and ate a donut had not done that in about a year. But it didnt destroy my sugars as bad as it would have if I had not been on this program. So I know this is working overall. Good luck to us all!

I'm just beginning week 3 of this challenge, but have been back on SparkPeople for about 2 months, tracking my food. I lost 4 pounds the first month, and my weigh-in for this month is next week. I have issues with weighing, so I only do it once a month and even then I get discouraged if the scales don't show a loss. But, I feel so much better than I did a month ago! I'm not eating any sweets and am eating less than 120g of carbs daily; I'm drinking 8+ glasses of water daily and eating more vegetables than fruit. Tracking my food helps me see what I'm eating before I eat it and I can make changes to keep me within my limits.

I am going sort of slow. I need to make so many changes with nutrition, that it's a huge learning curve for me. Cutting carbs, sodium and I have a potassium issue right now too. Very very challenging to find the right 'mix'. The trackers are great. I couldn't do any of this without them.

Hiya all,
well I've been on SP now 4 weeks now and am in my 5th.. 'SP had put me on this challenge and the 50+ 50 to 55 pounds to lose;... so been pretty consistent here..
I've been off 2 days now; 1 day I didn't feel able had some stress.. yesterday i was the whole day on my bike doing stuf around town.. and getting to some shops that are more than 2 kilometers away..
I just casually weighed myself to see how much i had put on by not exercising 2 days..
To my surprised i lost nearly half a kilo... aprox 1 pound... wowww..
I have been sticking to the diet advice from SP and have started to eat more peanuts.. but i dont really like them.. i prefer peanut butter.. so i was really expecting to put more weight on.. in total in the 4 weeks i have lost 3 and a half kilo.. with eating more calories, more fat and more protein, ( who would believe it??),
my portions have changed a little, but i have never really been a big eater...
What has been the biggest change is that the desire for sweet stuf; which i had developed since becoming a diabetic.. i used to blame it on the med.. but i see now it really was my diet.. i was missing something??.. Thankyou so much SP....

emoticon

my dietrician i had for 3 years didnot help me as much as a few weeks on SP...
so everone keep on track you will surely be rewarded..sucess everone..
have a good day.. emoticon

That I was doing it all wrong!! Now with the help of Spark, the nutrition tracker, exercise tracker, articles, and the support of everyone here at Spark. I have learned to eat better, to exercise more and have brought my daily blood glucose down to between 80-90 at am fasting. I feel so much better and have lost 22 pounds since returning to Spark. As most of you may know I have also added a Glucerna Shake to my daily nutrition which helps to gain control of blood sugars.

Logging on nutrition tracker, drink more water, continue with walking and exercising, also looking into pliates. Monitor blood sugars and continue to have a Glucerna Shake daily. Weigh and measure myself once per week.

Well after 2 weeks with trying to meet my calorie & protein goals which SP adviced me on the tracker, i finally lost the half kilo which i had put back on trying to follow advice from SP..
I found it so strange in the beginning when SP kept advicing me i had to eat more calories and protein and fat..
But after reading through the diabetic messages they sent which is sometimes hard to find..(still haven't found my way around SP..haha) i started to realize that one goal i asked was to be able to cut down on my sugar medication..
Then i realized that this diet advice was to get my sugar on track first.. so then i started to seriously try to meet there suggestions with the food i have in house and the few that i can afford..( i still cannot follow the recipe's to the dot because of my finance.. but i try to meet it with what i have).. and this coming week is my sugar control so I'm quite anxious about it and am hoping that this diet has paid off.. even a little.. so i'm keeping my fingers crossed..
I'm so happy for the half kilo.. and am sticking as much as possible to this routine..
good luck all and congrats for weight loss..tisha emoticon

Hi, I am doing the Thin Within book which speaks to emotional eating. You eat when hungry and stop as soon as satisfied usually 1-2 fists or 1-2 cups of food at a time. I am also working through a 30 day diabetic cure workbook. For the first ten days each day you give up or add one thing. Day one you give up sugar. Day two you add 1/4 tsp cinnamon daily to your diet. Day three which is where I am you eliminate soda's and sugary drinks. He does not recommend artificial sweeteners other than stevia or slimsweet. I am combinning the 2. I want to be able to come off my diabetic meds. I also am trying to do at least 15 minutes of exercise daily.

Hi Dale:

I get a lot of negative feelings too. I am not sure why but it has to do with my mother and her negativity. I am living with her now until I get a job. She watches everything I do and then offers criticism. Even her questions contain a negative comment. She is also overcontrolling as in wants to control everything around her (me) and to make it about her. She passes judgement on everything I do and say and wants to stop whatever she doesn't approve of. The only thing that works I know of is getting her approval before hand and then she doesn't stop me.

You know I started this diet but didn't tell her. She went out that afternoon and bought every snack I like. Chips, pretzels, dip, candy, pizza, and popcorn, What a great diet aid. lol.

It really piffef me off. lol. I get real mad and eventually it gets to me. Anger is a destructive emotion. There are only two negative emotions that I know of anger and fear. Of course there are others like envy, greed, and lust I suppose but anger and fear are the two bigees.

My mom fears loss of control and the actions of everyone around her. I hate the things she does and has done to fuff up my life. lol. She probably hates it too cause her daughters often hang up the phone on her and others avoid her. She has few friends. After a while it makes me act like everything is about her too. Stockholm syndrome. lol.

But you asked about getting out of negative moods.

I have a long list of stuff I do. Have sex. That usually helps. Grab your wife/mistress/husband.

Eating is off the list now for me.

I also try to figure out what is eating at me and then rationalize the problem. As in thinking about it in a rational way. I usually do this and then talk about it to someone I know (not mom).

Reordering my priorities. Lets face it most problems are way too big for their britches. Its only a big issue between your ears. As someone said "There are no big problems just little ones".

I also go through all my accomplishments for the last several days. I just list them in my mind. Lost 5 pounds, walked 7 miles, etc...

I also make a mental list of all my good qualities. Smart, loyal, clever, brave, etc ... Its along list. lol.

I list all the things I can do, computer programming, writing, electrical work, carpentry, plumbing, automechanics, treasure hunting, hunting, shooting, ... even longer list.

Stop complaining. I find that complaining kicks off a bunch of negativity in my life. Others hate it and often they push it back at me or make it worse. Life is tough enough already without putting more bad stuff out there. Just keep the bad things your secret.

I just sit around and think up complements for myself. My own fan club. You should think things that are true, it helps.

Put a positive spin on things. Every bad things is a chance to learn. Learn why it bothered you. Learn how to avoid it next time. Learn its no problem at all. Learn how to dig out of the hole you are in.

That reminds me, blaming others is about the dumbest thing to do. You give all your power to someone who is not going to fix things. I just say I am responsible and start moving in a positive direction again.

With negativity and bad feelings there is some negative thought that went thru your head you probably missed. Like "I am a failure". "I am unloveable". "I am a bad parent". etc ... I just do the opposite. I am a success. I am a good parent. I am loved. etc ... Its like wipe on and wipe off. You just wipe off a whole bunch of times to make yourself shine inside. It does work very well!!! Even when I don't know what it was I can still get better. I just start in wiping off and I shine inside even though I never do find out what got to me.

There is also protecting yourself/emotions so you don't get hurt in the first place. I don't know much about that. Expectations play a big role in this.

Also nonattachment. People mentally hold onto something and make it a part of themselves even though it is not. As in I lost my job, my life is over. Of course it isn't. Your job is not a part of you. You are something else. Someone dented my car, my life is ruined. No it isn't. I see attachment as a bad thing.

Anyway that is how I do it. And I need to go have a talk with myself now. Thanks for reminding me.

You lost how much!

I am eating gluten-free and try to avoid sugar as much as possible. So far, so good. I need to do these things. I realize that they're not for everyone, but they really work for me.

I am battling overeating this week. I got some sad news yesterday and I overate last night. Did not even connect the two until this morning. My son lost his job and his wife is pregnant. He got severance pay that will last until mid-April and there are savings. They're going to try to sell their house in SD and move to UT to be near her parents. My son is going out there next month to live with her parents and look for a job. Overall, things look good and are under control, but I am saddened and nervous.

Now about that overeating...I am not going to let emotions rule my life. I will stick to my food plan today and not overeat. I can feel good about that! I will go for a walk today and take my mind off of bad things.

How does anyone else take their mind off of emotional things??

All it says is tell us how. I assume that's tell us how to lose weight, My simple formula is eat less and exercise more. You have to do that to succeed. You need to do both.

All the other things are to help me keep doing it every day. Most people know how to lose weight they just do not keep it up everyday. They stop and slide back into old habits that made them fat.

Lots of things can help. Logging food, logging exercise, readings articles, talking to people who are trying also, doing something different, doing more, changing the food you eat, etc ...

As far as will to lose weight goes I may not be the best person to ask about that. Getting it done requires saying NO to bad habits and YES to the good ones. I will not overeat. I will not eat candy. I will not eat off my food plan, I will not cheat. It's that word NO I say to myself that helps break the bad habits. At first I have to do it 24 times or more a day but then it lessens and in three days the desire is almost gone.

I also have to say YES to the good habit and get up and do it. I will log my food. I will exercise I will eat healthy food. I will post on spark. Most of the things we do have a reward to them. Exercise makes you feel beater. Losing weight gives you more energy. etc... Saying YES to the good habits makes you a success at losing weight.

Another way I like to look at it is this. All of these bad and good habits are two sides of the same coin. If one exists then the other exists. If I can gain weight by eating extra then I can lose weight by eating less. Because I can gain weight I am guaranteed I can lose weight by doing the opposite. There is no doubt I can lose weight. I CAN LOSE WEIGHT. Guaranteed.

If my bad, weight gaining habits start to kick in I can do the opposite to be a success. If I want to just sit around I can go do domething and get some exercise. If I want to eat a fat snack I just eat a healthy one. If I want to over eat I just say that's enough. All of these habits are just two sides of the same coin.

Of course the bad habit keeps trying to get satisfied and the good one needs practice. But in a few days of saying YES and NO you have changed.

That's how I do it.

You lost how much!

I have been using the nutrition tracker and meal plan set by SP and just tweeking it when I need to. I use the fitness tracker as wel - I am trying to do at least 30 minutes of cardio a day (even if I have to break it up into 3 - 10 minute sections to fit into my schedule). I have two plates that I received from a weight loss coach from my work - that is sectioned off (by a picture) meat, vegetable/s and fruit/s, and whole grains. I have a problem with getting enough sleep (I have noticed that if I get 8 hours of sleep I lose some weight and if I do not get enough sleep I either stay the same or gain). I did not realize how important getting enough sleep was.

The road to reaching ones goals has many twists and turns, just remember to get back to the main roadway and not worry about the little side trips, its the end of the trip that counts and what you learn along the way! I have had BIG side trips trying to lose my weight but I never thought I would not get there and still believe I will. You will too!

Good Morning EveryOne, Happy Friday Eve!

Going toward the end of my third week with the Challenge. Hunger has been my biggest culprit; but I notice that happens when, according to my meal plan, I haven't eaten enough. Although, when I'm eating it fills like enough. The last couple of days I have gotten it right. A lot of trial and error;but that's OK. But Oh, My Goodness, the weekend is coming and top it all off, a "Bojangles" has just been built at the intersection of the highway that lead to my home. Pray for me.

This is the beginning of week 3. What an enlightening journey! I find that logging shows that I do eat the right foods, however, my amounts are less than the plan shows. So far I use the finger, palm, and deck of cards measurement for sight sizing.
I am really busy getting ready for the tax season so my cardio is walking, not the three days at the gym that I am used to. Hopefully this week will fall into place with some motivation from my team.
My husband is enjoying the new recipes from the plan and Spark recipe's site. (He is the cook in the kitchen.) We also have been using the shopping list for each week and find it to be a great time saver. We print it out, scan the kitchen for items that we already have, and then take it with us to the grocery stores.
When I have that need to eat sweets I usually have a piece of fruit, like apples, small oranges or pears. That way I get the fruit I need and it is not a chore. When the urge gets me hard, I have dark chocolate 70% and eat two squares. I always make sure that it is at least 2 hours past a meal so that it doesn't interfere with my sugar readings. ( my diabetic educator said, " if you try to deny yourself the urge will take over."
I find that a good balance of foods at a meal stops me from overeating. One third of a plate of good carbs (vegetable and salad) one serving of protein ( meat and meat substitutes) one serving of fat ( margarine, oil or butter) one serving of grains ( potatoe, bread, cereal).
So far I am down 6 lb. and find that I have lots of energy. (11 lb. now)
The most important thing is the water. A urinologist once told me to keep a four ounce glass handy and fill it and drink it every hour. That way at the end of the day you have consumed what your body needs and it doesn't over fill you.

I am not eating enough fruits and veggies some days. Other days, I eat plenty. I need to be more consistent in eating 3 meals a day, not 2. Drinking the water is usually not a problem. Maybe once I get rid of this infection, I will feel more like eating. I track my food every day, but it just tells me that I am still eating too much and not the right nutrition goals.

I hold myself more accountable for every bite that goes in my mouth. I would not be as aware of the hidden morsels that I eat without this tracker.

What a wake up call. I entered Orville Redenbacher's Pop up Bowl Popcorn. Wow I had no idea it held so many calories. Never doing that again.

Tracking my exercise and nutrition helps me stay focused. Also knowing I need to check in with my progress. I have to remember I will not always do it perfectly so that I i don't use an imperfect moment or action to talk me into giving up.

The nutrition tracker is great! I print it out each day and add my glucose readeings to it. Right now I'm checking my glucose 3xs a day. This is my first month with Diabetes, and I need to know how different foods affect my levels.
I also track my exercise. It helps me to be more diligent on what I do for workouts. Finally, I read something every day on diabetes. There is so much that I don't know about the disease.
I love thid 8 week weight loss Challenge. I have lost 3 pounds, and am so happy.

I am using the nutrition tracker. It really has opened my eyes to not only the carbs and caloric content in foods but is helping me redefine what my diet needs to consist of. I am struggling to get my FBS in line as well as getting enough foliate. Who knew? I am dropping weight and feeling more energetic. Onward and upward.

Like Autumn, I'm not seeing the pounds fall off yet, but I am glad I'm tracking my food. A lot of days when I thought I'd not eaten enough, I had overshot my goals or eaten a lot more fat or salt than I'd realized. It's a great tool.

My sugar numbers are improving now that I'm back at Spark. I'm not losing the pounds like I want but it will happen.

The biggest problem I'm having is during exercise. I have to determine the difference between I'm out of breath because I'm out of shape and I can push a little more or is it my lung disease telling me to slow it down! This will get easier I'm sure.

I understand exactly what you mean. When I first joined Spark they didn't have a diabetes program or tracker yet. That probably had a great deal for me not posting or exploring other areas. I would mainly use the recipe section. I tracked on my diabetic website. My dietary classes stressed exchanges similar to the old WW plan. To this day, I will track in diabetic portions using an odd mixture. I am glad to see more emphasis on diabetes and they do have good information on Spark. I suppose I will always have that calculator of exchanges in the back of my mind. However, it might be useful to have an exchange tracker.
I agree, it isn't so much to focus on the numbers. If you eat in a way which works for you all else falls into place.
It can become obsessive. I hope it all falls into place for you soon and you will find a way to make it work. My suggestion is to use all resources available and find your match.

I have realized I focus too much on the numbers when I use the food tracker here on spark so my nutritionist has given me a different food tracker to use that uses exchanges instead. it would be helpful if spark could possibly do a food tracker that counted exchanges instead of calories. Since tracking my food I have noticed I am more aware I used to eat alot of breads but I am eating more fruits and veggies now. my blood sugars are better since I started eating less breads.

As I look at my nutrition tracker, I can see too much sodium, and not enough fiber. My doctors and I are treating the fiber with supplement in addition to diet. I have lately some health problems, and have noted some swelling. I am working on the sodium to see if that is a factor.
As for my blood sugars, I am currently more hpo=glcemic, and watching the regularity of meals is helpful.

I am not doing the exercise routine. Between 2 jobs and then caring for 5 dogs and 6 cats I am give out. I know I can always find an excuse. On the other hand I am tracking my food and have started drinking 8 cups of water daily so I am trying to do better. The food tracker is great I dont have to figure anything or add up anything. It does it for you. On the other hand I realize that I am eating waaaaaaaay too much fat.

Week 3, day 3. Holy cow I eat a lot of carbs! I'm definitely going to need to work on that. I thought I was doing okay today. Looks like I'll have a serving of ham for dinner, some veggies (carrots more than likely) and some water and call it good. At least I've had plenty of fruit today (grapes, apple, grapefruit juice for breakfast, some pineapple). Time to revisit the meal planning in terms of calories, fat, fiber, carbs and protein instead of just food groups and estimates.

Week 3 day 1
Well I got started n week 3 late for some reason is it not letting me select week three for which week I am on. But I decided that I will post on this week anyway. I began this journey thinking oh this will be easy. Over the last three weeks I have found that sometimes it is hard to keep on track.
There was a day when I had to get my computer fixed. I have challenged myself to post every morning so that I am able to complete my post for the week. The reason is once I get going for the day I am so busy I forget.
I have managed to lose 2 lbs in the last week. My sugar levels are finally starting to come back done they were in the high 200s a month ago now they are on average 100-120 which I personally would like it lower but that is still not bad I guess.

Week 3 Day 5. Feeling energetic and up right now as I was off work last night. Will be gettting on the indoor cycle for a little leg work out in a few minutes. I sleep in the daytime. My main work out time is when I get up.
My new lifestyle journey has been underway and my body is trying to get used to the change. I am thinking about changing my diabetic meds. I am on Actos and glypizide. I am looking into Metformin for a change. Actos puts water weight on-it keeps fluids on.

week 3 day 1 my fasting sugar was 8.8 today. I also have gastric paresis and live mostly on diabetic boost. I eat a few things through the day like rye bread. Of course I only have 1 slice. I am doing well with my walks and excercising is a bit of a problem as I have osteoarthritis. Will keep plugging along. Good luck everyone!!! emoticon

Week 3 Day 3

Fasting BG 122 Well, due to the stress at work I will be taking blood pressure medication. emoticon

I have decided that I have earned a day off from exercise. Will resume it tomorrow. But, I work night shift and will get plenty of walking steps and exercise at work at my hospital as I work on the Cardiac floor. Busy floor all the time. I am on shift tonight. (and off tomorrow night).

Portion control doing well. Still trying to decide how to label my meals due to me working nights and sleeping daytime. So, my husband and I live "upside down" lives because of it.

I am making progress-even if I so far do not see it on the scale, yet, I can feel the differance. emoticon

Currently, I am a dealing with gastroparies and I am unable to digest food. As a result, I am almost on a liquid diet. As a result, tracking my food is important and while this week, I had some missed days - it has helped see where I need to supplement as well. Currently, I am having Glucerna three times a day, soft veggies and applesauce.

My goal this week is to get my calories to 1200 a week. I have increased my exercise this past week and will continue to work through this. I will be doing the workout this week.
