Thank you Nanald and LadyRose49! I plan on having a glorious day. It was supposed to be sunny and warm, but at the moment it is cloudy and raining. I'm not going to let that dampen my spirits. It just means I'll be walking with Leslie Sansone inside today instead of outside in the sun. This is doable. Nothing is going bring me down!! Happy Birthday to me!! emoticon emoticon

My long term goals are to continue with Weight Watchers and go to the weekly meetings for support and encouragement in reaching my goal.

To lose 25 pounds in the challenge by the end of June

To start the 28 day bootcamp today and see if I can survive it without passing out.

To continue walking a participate in a 5K walk on May 22nd

To lose 100 pounds by the end of 2011--I hope this is obtainable

To not get discouraged or quit when I have weeks of no loss or even small gains. These are all to be expected and dealt with. They happen to everyone. You just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and continue marching forward.

To try to eat one meal out a month to practice eating out and how to work my points with Weight Watchers. I want to be realistic and be able to function in the real world.

To have a great birthday tomorrow and hopefully live to see many more birthdays!!!

Hugs, Lauri

Hi Kay! I am debating starting the other challenge. The only thing that I am not sure about is that it requires exercising every day and with the Lupus that can get me in trouble. I have a tendency to push when I shouldn't when I get involved in something and then end up in bed. I know I should try and just not take it quite so literally!!! It is May 1 so it is time to make a decision for sure:)

I may never get my page updated so I am going to list my major goals here so that I have them in writing.

1. Continue to do an aerobic workout video of 30 or more minutes at least 3 days a week. Complete at least 20 minutes of aerobic activity for at least 20 minutes two additional days a week.

2. Continue with strength training three days a week.

3. Continue to record food and stay within calorie and nutritional range.

4. Explore reduction of medications with MD at next appointment.

5. Participate in at least one challenge every month.

6. Continue to work on developing the habit of daily meditation.

I can't believe the challenge is almost over!!!

Day-7,Week-8,8-week challenge
Day-6,Week-3,Stress busting challenge
Good Day, One and All... emoticon
The 8-week challenge has come to an end, but not my weight loss, I have about 85lbs to go of my 228lb total I want to lose. When I reach my goal of 170lbs I will decide if I want to lose a few more lbs.
Sparks has been very helpful to get and keep me motivated.
emoticon
I won't say it has been easy losing 143lbs so far, and it has taken me over yrs to get to this point, but it has been worth it! emoticon
All the counters keep me honest and help me to keep going, seeing the numbers lost go up and the total weight go down is such a wonderful feeling. emoticon
And all the people here, in my groups who spurn me on with support and helpful words really gives me that little extra push when I need it, at times. You are all emoticon .
Today as been very stress free, I am home alone sipping my coffee and playing some games on face book, and thinking about how far I have come in the past 4yrs.
You could have never told me I would end up living back in PA, and especially right next to my parents. There are too many dark secrets that have finally come out into the open and dealt with between myself and my step-father. He may not be my dad by blood but he was and is the only father I have ever known, and I am so thankful we were able to clear the air and now have a very deep and caring love for each other.
Now with his health and my mom's health, I am so thankful I am here for them, I would have been devastated if I would have found out after they had both gone just how bad off they are and how much they need someone here to help them. Don't get me wrong my siblings live very close but they drop in now and again and really are just seeing how much our parents are slipping.
Anyway...I am babbling, I love sparks and am always here for anyone who needs it, just drop me a line....God Bless, Brightest of Blessings and Hugs Tammy emoticon

Day-2, Week-3
Stress Buster Challenge
Good Morning.... emoticon
It rained and stormed last night, and I so enjoyed listening to it.
This morning a bit chilly and some softer rain off and on.
My brother took my dad to his appt this morning,
so I was able to just lounge and relax a b it this morning. emoticon
I took my measurements this morning, some changes, some not, weight had no change, but at least no gains. emoticon
Dinner will be a low cal tex mex for just Daymon and myself, my parents will be late getting home and will eat out. emoticon
I found some really good low carb, whole wheat tortillas. Which is where most of the carbs come from in a tex mex dinner.
I hope everyone has the Brightest of Blessings through their day, Hugs Tammy

This has been a great learning experience for me. I have gotten back into the habit of tracking what I eat, I am checking my blood sugars on a more regular basis and also taking my insulin the way I am supposed to take it, along with consistently exercising. My goal is to continue doing as many rights things for my health as possible. I have my A1C taken every 3 months so I have one more month to go to prove to myself that I can manage my sugar. In Jan. I had a 9.5 A1C and I am shooting for a 7 by the end of April.

My nutritionist refered me to this when I asked about the difference in home meter readings and lab readings:

MY meter readings do not match the laboratory's results. Is my meter accurate?
Comparing meter and laboratory results.
For many people blood glucose meter accuracy becomes a concern when they purchase a new meter and compare it with their old one, or go to the doctor to have a laboratory test. They may notice a seemingly large difference between the two test results.
At first glance, you would expect all blood glucose meters and laboratory equipment to give the same result. After all, they're measuring the same thing-the amount of glucose in a specific blood sample. But meters and lab equipment may be calibrated, or set, to measure blood glucose in different ways and will give different results.

Accuracy
How is accuracy defined? Before deciding if your meter is accurate, it's important to understand how accuracy is defined. In the medical community a home blood glucose meter's test result is considered clinically accurate if it falls within + 20%* of an accepted reference result, usually a lab test. Comparing a meter's test result with a lab test is the only valid method of determining its accuracy.

Plasma-calibrated meters
While all home blood glucose meters use whole blood to measure glucose, lab equipment uses only the plasma portion of blood, meaning the red blood cells are removed before glucose is measured. Because of this difference in sample types, whole blood test results are approximately 12 percent lower than plasma test results. Some blood glucose meters are already calibrated, or set, to give a "plasma" test result, making this conversion unnecessary. For an accurate comparison of your blood glucose meter to a laboratory result, you must first know how your meter is calibrated.

Whole blood-calibrated meters
Whole blood-calibrated meters require a simple mathematical conversion to compare their test results with laboratory test results. Plasma-calibrated meters do not require a conversion and their results may be compared directly with laboratory test results. Whether you use one meter type or the other, it is important to note that both are accurate and neither is superior to the other. Just as with the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales measuring temperature or miles and kilometers measuring distance, both meter types measure the same thing-your blood glucose level.

Hope that helps clear up some questions.

Interesting. My CDE told me that the meter should be within 15% of the lab reading or take it back. They shouldn't be off by more than that.

Cheers,

I found out that the at home blood sugar tests run lower than the test done at the lab. Home tests use whole blood while lab tests do not and that accounts for the difference of about 20 pts. Google this and they can explain it better.

I am going to continue with the various exercises throughout the week, such as the resistance band workout and the dumbbell workout..love them both....I have my schedule set up so that I get upper body workout twice a week, lower body workout twice a week and core twice a week......I will continue tracking both food and exercise, which I know are essential to becoming healthier, no matter how long it takes to lose my weight..the main thing I am concerned with is to keep my blood sugars under control, become healthier and stronger....as well as the added bonus of the weight lost along the way.. emoticon emoticon emoticon

My long term goals are to continue to keep my blood sugars down and to continue what I learned in this challenge.

When we are finished with this challenge can we continue to stay on this team? Will there be a separate section for those who want to stay to communicate with one another daily?

I am kind of sorry that the challenge is over. I enjoyed it and I made some real progress. I am going to continue to exercise and put my all into that. AND, I will continue to eat properly to keep my blood sugar counts down to healthy where they are now. I get the results of my A1C monday and I am eager to see the results.

I loved this challenge. Have a joy filled day, Karen

I will continue working to get my A1C completely under control. Just a little over 6 right now. I will continue to use my scale and measure foods so I can continue to get towards a healthy weight. I plan to continue walking at least 30 minutes a day and doing a variety of other exercises every day for at least another 30 minutes.

Pulled from my longer blog post today that sums up how I feel about this whole thing:

"What's my long term goal in all of this? Simply put, I want to be a healthy diabetic.

I will always be diabetic. My blood is completely under control right now and I'm in the best shape of my life, but I'm still diabetic. That doesn't mean I can't be in shape, fit, active, and in a healthy weight range. I was terrified of becoming a stereotype; Instead, I want to be an exception. I want people to look at me and be surprised, to say things like "You're diabetic? But you're not fat! You work out and eat healthy foods!" And I want to look at them and say: "Exactly."

I have almost reached one of my goals, and that was to lower my blood sugars to 7 or below!I'm very close, my other goal is to lose another 30 lbs before my knee surgery!
I intend to continue with this healthy lifestyle forever, I can't believe how much better I feel..it has been a wonderful journey, and not one without it's struggles, but I am learning every day that this is the way to go! Yeah Spark!

I love the bands I am actually treating myself to new ones and a new ball since the old one is over 12 years old and used as a seat most of the time. I enjoyed the journey with you Pat in Maine. emoticon

Keep up the tracking of food and exercise. Also change up the exercise program more often. I have been doing a full body program and the exercises change (somewhat) from week to week e.g. triceps extension vs. triceps kick back and ditto for the other muscle groups. However, I found a big improvement by following the much different ball and exercise band routines.

For me this is my lifestyle before and after the challenge. I have learned a great deal from my fellow participants and it has made me more aware of the diabetes epedemic unfolding in this country and other parts of the world where so much processed and unhealthy foods abound.
My goal is to banish those un healthy foods from our home and lifestyle. One can always say NO if you think it is not good for your healthy eating plan. I have enjoyed your company Pat in Maine.

My long term goals are to change my strength exercises more often since that does seem to help, and to track daily for both nutrition and exercise. My doctor recommends checking my blood sugar once per day, so I will continue that.

Now that the challenge is over, what's next for you? How will you continue with your program and keep making progress?
