Lab report glucose levels are taken directly from a larger vein, and from a larger sample, so it's bound to be a bit different... all you really need for success here is knowing within a reasonable spread what you are dealing with, so you can make adjustments in your diet and exercise program. I don't pay much attention to the single glucose levels from the lab reports unless there is a HUGE discrepancy, say 30 points or more--but that A1C is the real kicker--pay close attention to that, because it will always be accurate to the decimal point, and gives an average that says something about your overall control and adherence to protocol...

Unless it becomes a pattern and happens every time you go to the lab, I wouldn't worry...

Thanks, Kathy. My husband bought me one of the new Freestyle Lite meters, and I was going to check if there was some solution with that one. But now I see it won't work for the older Freestyle meter.

I tested my blood sugar right after I left the lab at the dr.'s office, so it was a matter of minutes. I was happy to see that it was below 100, but when I got the report from the lab, theirs said it was 115.

The others are right. the manufacturer can answer all these questions. It IS possible to get defective strips, and usually if you call they will send you a new vial of them. All they ask is that you return the vial with the defective strips in the postage-paid container they provide, so they can test them to determine what happened and try to prevent future problems. AND if you ask, they usually will also send you control solution... it too has an expiration date, so its important to keep up with that, and, as you've discovered, most drugstores DON'T carry it--it's slightly different for each mfg. company... don't use control solution from one on strips from another.

As for the 20 point difference... stress bumps it up, and a lot of folks are unaware of how stressed you can get just BEING in the doctor's office! LOL Some folks have that happen to their blood pressure, too!... And just a quick question...

...did you use your meter at the same time the doctor's office tested, or was it at home before you left? The longer you wait to eat, the higher your reading is likely to be if you suffer at all from that Dawn Phenomenon... so testing at home and then testing in the doctor's office a little while later can result in higher numbers in the later reading...

Check with the manufacturer. If that meter has been discontinued and perhaps no longer supported, the manufacturer may offer to send you a new updated machine. Also, the company I use here in Canada, will also replace any unused test strips for ones that can be used in the new machine.

It might be worth looking into. Good luck.

P.S. The next time you go to the lab for fasting blood work, take your meter and ask if they will test it from the blood sample they take. I went to one lab once, and they did that. Another time at another lab, they would not. But you never know until you ask. There is often a difference between the lab results and the meter results and that is normal. I think they allow a 10 percent variance or something like that.....

The last time I did a fasting reading at the dr.'s office, there was a 20-point difference between that one and the reading I did with my meter. I would love to check the accuracy of my meter, but none of the drug stores I've tried here carry the control solution. And when the pharmacy tech looked into ordering some for me, she said she wasn't able to. (I have the older Freestyle meter).

Do any of you know how to get the control solution for the meters after you use all of the one that comes with it originally?

Yes, temperature can certainly affect the performance of the strips, as can expiry date. Always check the expiry date. Good luck.....

Well, I certainly agree with calling the 800 or 888 # on the vial to discuss the problem (or even maybe your pharmacist).

I happen to use Freestyle Lite (love it). I assume other meters are the same as this in that there is a control solution to test the accuracy of the strips once/mth or so? I you have that, I'd use the control solution as directed to see what the results are. The bottle tells you what the range should be (the strip bottle, that is) IF it's like Freestyle Lite.

Love is the root of all things good in life.

Check with the manufacturer, there should be an 800 or 888 phone number or get their E-mail address, off the vial. They will know if there was a problem with the batch by the code on vial. (I was sent a small vial of strips, and lancets, when I reported a problem I had had)

Good Luck!

Sometimes the reason for the error of the strips is that the weather can affect them. To hot or to cold...Don't leave in your car and even delivery (if by mail) can affect them.

Used t have that problem with strips of FreeStyle and One Touch. With each meter I kept those strips till I had OH about 5 or 10, called the number on the strip container and reported it. I was sent a return package that held the used strips and the remainder of the container and received a replacement about a week later. ....Now I use a Bayer USB and have been for 3 years and have not had a problem with the test strips. ( Just Love the meter )

ATERRA what kind of strips are you using I am using Accucheck are you. I have had a couple of strips doing this to me. The blood only goes half way up the strip. I was planning to call about it happening. I have an ACCUCHEK AVIVA, I love it.
Maybe a problem there, lets check if they are the same ones.

This morning I had 3 test strips show error of "too little blood or other error with strip". I know there was enough blood because I poked the heck out of myself all three times. I ended up opening a new vial of test strips and using one from there and it worked. Later in the day the original vial of strips worked again without an error. Any ideas as to what was happening? I don't get very many strips from my insurance and hate to waste...... Any ideas?
