I wanted to share some good news. We're going to Ireland in May because my DH got tired of my saying I needed to go there to break down brick walls. LOL A few days ago, one came tumbling down and with the help yesterday from a genealogist in our group from the library, it appears I was on the right trail all along so yea!! I will walk in the footsteps of Patrick Rispin (1814) in Meath Co., Ireland. I hope to learn more and maybe meet a distant relative. Wish me luck. At 71 I don't have decades to do this. emoticon emoticon

Tostarz: If this makes you feel better? I had a nastygram from a 2nd cousin who flatly stated that my grandfather did not exist. No grandpa was on the same boat as his grandfather, same parents etc. His story is complicated but yes, he did exist.

About 2 years passed and this dude came up as a DNA match LOL. He still denied it (guess he didn't want to be wrong.)

When I hit a brick wall I just wait and go on until a later date. Lots of other research to do.

Hi Tostarz,
I would be glad to try to help you to try to see if I can find any information on your brick wall ancestor couple. If you would just let me know names, places, and dates of the direct descendants in that line. I might not be able to help you, but I will try.
I have a major brick wall for one of my 2nd great grandmothers.

It has been a long time so I am not sure I am doing this right. Here is my brick wall.
My husband family he doesn't know much about. I have working on it over the years. I have a really rude person hit me up about why I have this person on the tree instead of the person she has. Well I am open to anything that can be proven. I have gotten one set of people and she has another set of people. she asked me where I gotten my information. I told her that I think I got it from a older member of the family. He got his information from his mother. I can't prove the set of name I have are right. Here is the problem after the rude person demanded that I change my tree (witch is private), I started to look at her tree. She can't prove her set of name are right either. She accused me of giving out wrong information to other people. I have question everyone in the family that I can think of about these names and no one can remember. I can't find the census I need or any marriage certificate to support my names. I need to know how to find these on Ancestory or some other site to help me find out the truth. Any help would be amazing.

All problems become smaller if you don't dodge them, but confront them. Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks you; grasp it boldly and its spines crumble.

My brick wall looks like this:
Dinah
1730–1813
BIRTH 1730
DEATH 1813
5th great-grandmother

She married a Jesse Bush. I cannot find any reference to her parents or to her maiden name. Any ideas on how to proceed?

F8CONE8, are there any census records that list him with his parents? Was there a will or probate record that he was named in? Is there a war pension record? These sources could give you some information.

So I met a second cousin who has written extensively about my family. He sent me an article he wrote about my grandmothers family. In it he has noted each source which brings me to my dilemma. My great grandfather's marriage license and death certificate list 2 different sets of parents. All of the other names fit with what I know to be true and is well documented. I've been stuck on this family for a long time but this just added more questions.

I'm stymied.

Darlene, don't know if you have this or not. You may want to check to see if Marilyn Monson is on Ancestry & get in touch with her to see if she has more information.

Heisenstein/Skidmore marriage 1885 in Missouri

Darlene, look for the census records for Seburn Thomas Hurley & Temaxxeni Anna (Tompkins) Hurley. You are looking to see where they list the birthplace of their parents.

Thank you Sandy for the links. I have the Hamblin book and the information on these lines, but neither show them having a son Amos Powers. =/

Congrats on your break through on your paternal grandmother via the DNA! That is so exciting. emoticon emoticon

p.s. I just found my line. Not all the children are included, but I guess I'll have to join ancestry. (again) I know I was on there in the late 1990's. maybe it was free then?

But how confusing is this:

Eliakim has three sons: john, jesse, james. (and here I thought it was a 1980's thing to name all your kids with the same first letter) LOL

Jesse marries a Rebecca Bennett,
his brother John has a son Jesse and that son marries a Rebecca Bennett.

Nah, that's not confusing at all. (shaking head) not at all.
Plus, they kept moving: VA, TN, VA, KY,

Although, now I've found another hiccup. It's showing a woman as Jesse's mom, but she is younger than him. So who was his mom? emoticon

Thank you Sandy. I guess I had most of the information all this time. Now, I'm going to have to get the DNA testing done and schedule time to delve back into all this. I'd like to know when we came over. I have heard a Powers was in MA at the time of the Salem witch trials.

I think maybe I've made a chip in two of my brick walls.

(1) My paternal grandmother came to America as a young woman & I've been unable to find out anything about her life in Ireland. I got the names of her parents from the death certificates of two sisters, but Martin Walsh & Bridget Walsh are very common names there. A couple of days ago I went to the Mayo GEDmatch team on Facebook. I had joined it last year but really hadn't done much there. I decided to go down the list & compare my DNA to all the other Walsh matches in County Mayo There were 85 of them. It was boring & I considered giving up, but I found 3 DNA matches with others in that group. The first clues ever. I've contacted one & will be cont6acting the other two. One of them still lives in Ireland. Here's hoping.

(2) My maternal 5th great-grandfather, Jacob Robinson, has been a brick wall for years. Many people are searching to find out who his parents are & who his wife's parents are. I made a shadow tree from a Robinson DNA match & attached my DNA to it on Ancestry yesterday. Today, I have 4 DNA direct matches leading to the same people. This is going to take more research but it sure is a great clue.

STRNGNGRNDED, Took a quick look by googling 'jesse powers & rebecca bennett, genealogy' & came up with the names of Jesse's parents as Eliakim Powers (1765-1812) & Elizabeth Tye (1766-1852). There are other articles there as well.

www.ancestry.com/genealogy/records/j
es
se-powers_7547884

Then I googled 'Eliakim Powers & Elizabeth Tye, genealogy' & among others, found an article on the Descendants of John Holloway which shows that Elizabeth was really Elizabeth Hamblin who married (1) Eliakim Powers & (2) John Granger Tye.

www.genealogy.com/ftm/h/o/l/Clark-J-
Ho
lloway/BOOK-0001/0007-0006.html

Two totally different sources but they both list the same parents for Jesse.

This is just a starting place. Happy hunting!

Hey all~

One of my brick walls is my third gr. grandfather: Jesse Powers. He was said to serve in the Civil War on the Union side. He had a son Amos Powers (m. Elizabeth Perkins Blakley Powers), who had a son Caleb Powers.

Any family information seems to stop at Jesse Powers. (supposedly married to Rebbecca Bennett, but then a few people list that the next generation was also Jesse Powers (sr?) and also a Rebecca Bennett.

So cool I'm on a wild search myself found a name for my uncle's ex-wife now to get to the truth and to see if it is true or not. I've found hints just from Google always fun to dig further that's how I found my husband's mother and sister. He was told his mother was dead.

Linda, you can do it. Just takes practice.

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry but I can still do a search & see the info that comes up, just can't go look at it. I did a search using his mother's name & one doing her father's name. Did both under the everything tab & the family trees tabs.

Then I googled his mother's name & her father's name & found a post from a family member. Two different family members had their names & their current email addresses listed.

This is the info I sent to Randy, reminding him that the info is clues only. I didn't follow up & search for the records but now he knows where to get them.

Randy, the census record page I sent you lists the children at the orphanage. Your mother is listed in there. I sent it to you to give you the name & address of the orphanage.

On the pages of family history, there are two of your relatives at the bottom & their email addresses. You might want to contact them to share information.

Randy, I have information for you. Do you want me to post it all here or I can email it to you. That would probably be better since I expect to find more. My email address is heresmuddnuri@gmail.com. Please email me your email address.

Here is some of what I've found so far. Please note, I have not found proof of the facts given below. They were provided, with other information, by other direct descendants of the Leger family. -

Agnes Mae Leger was born on 23 Jan 1929 in Crowley, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. She died in Mar 1986 in Crowley, Acadia Parish, Louisiana.

Her father was Alceus "Alcee" Leger, son of Augustin Leger II & Marie Melasie Leger. He was born on 17 Sep 1877 in Churchpoint, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. He died in 1942..His paternal grandparents were Augustin Leger & Marie Emerante Meche. His maternal grandparents were Placide Leger & Azelie Marie Matte. Alcee married (2) Marie Aglae LeJeune.

Her mother was Beulah Bowen, daughter of Hickman Davis Bowen & Susan Etta Manley. She was born 10 Aug 1890 in Dickson County [state not given] & died in 1950 in Crowley, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Beulah married (1) Francis A. "Frank" Greenman.

Randy, have you taken a DNA test? not yet finances are right yet...

What was your mother's name? Agnes Mae Leger

What was her mother's name? About when was she born? Beulah Bowen but she had married once before. That was to a man with the last name Greenman..

Would St. Landry Parish, LA sound about right? That is close to Baton Rouge but its within probabilities i would say. being a day farmer they would travel to where the work was,,,,

My dilemma is that i don't know the right name of my moms dad and no one to clarify because they were both dead before i was born. I have been to my grandmothers grave once when we buried my day in the same cemetery but nothing on him. i have seen a census doc in ancestry that said info on him but the girls name was wrong on it,,,,,,no info on the other name though,,,,,,that is why i call our family tree a family bush cause the lineage stops so quickly...or least what we know,,,no living relatives that we know of except one cousin.....thanks for the idea though.

You maybe able to start with the death certificate and work your way backwards. Have you used any of the genealogy website? I have been able to narrow and research family I've gotten stuck on that way . Granted took a year to figure out what was a real match and what wasn't but well worth it.

I just found what happened to my grandfather and his siblings I couldn't figure out what happened between the 1910 federal census and 1930 just found out they were in an orphanage

ok here goes, my mothers maiden name was Leger....her dads name was either "Alcee or Alcide Leger. He was a poor day farmer in southwest Louisiana near Eunice I believe..don't know if he and my moms mom was married or not cause i have never found any thing pertaining to her as a Leger. her maiden name was Bowen..my mom was raised from 3or 4 years old till about 10 or so in a orphanage...and all of this i learned after my mom had passed away. she never talked of her childhood while we were growing up... now i see why...
Thanks for any assistance..

Randy.

(1) Please post your genealogy "brick walls" here. Maybe we can help each other tear them down.

(2) There is also a Facebook genealogy group called "Your Genealogy Brick Walls." They have been very helpful to many, many people.

Be sure to include the person's name & whatever information you do have for them - birth & death dates, places if known, parents if known, etc.
