Round 1 - Day 1

This has already been a powerful process and I would like to make two personal statements before I start. Firstly that my past 'dieting' mistakes do not determine my future.
Secondly that I choose to reject someone's efforts to make me feel inadequate because I am trying to change aspects of my life. This is their difficulty, not mine.

So here I go...
emoticon I used to procrastinate when working by heading to the kitchen and grazing, but now I drink water and take a break by exercising or doing something useful.

emoticon I used to eat sugary/ salty snacks when using a laptop/iPad, but now I have chopped veg/fruit prepped in the fridge.

emoticon I used to guesstimate but now I have learned portion sizes by measurement.

emoticon I used to 'repeat eat' treats once I started but now I stop at one, distract myself and wait until the urge passes.

emoticon I used to have a random 'fit it in later' attitude to fitness but now I've planned it into my weekly schedule and I have a target to aim for.

emoticon I used to feel bad about my appearance but now I focus on my best features, dress carefully and walk outdoors with my head held high.

emoticon I used to feel inadequate and blame everything on my perceived shortcomings but now I have put that burden down. I know I am worthy of love and am capable of shaping my present and future.

Bless you all for giving me the encouragement to do this!

Day 1

I used to not want to feel, but now I tell myself I have the courage to feel.
I used to be afraid I'll fall apart, but know I tell myself I have the courage to feel.
I used to mindlessly eat, but now I portion my food and track my food.
I used to eat when I was tired, but now I seek rest.

Round Two - Day One - 100 Days of Weight Loss

emoticon I used to think I could not lose weight after menopause. But now I know that I have to exercise to improve my metabolism, and that I will lose weight just a tiny bit slower than before.

emoticon I used to allow perfectionism thinking which meant if I deviated from my eating plan, even with just a single candy bar, I'd go into a huge tailspin, go completely off plan through guilt, remorse, and emotional eating, leading to a regain of most or all the weight I had worked so hard to lose. But now I've learned if I am 90-95% "in the green" with eating and exercise, I will still lose weight. If I have a pause, I can get right back on the narrow path the next meal and will do just fine. It feels good to eat more like a normal person!

emoticon I used to eat restaurant foods every day. But now I cook healthy, portion controlled meals at home. I go out to breakfast once a week and I go out to dinner once a week.

emoticon I used to eat breakfast via McDonald's drive thru: two sausage McMuffins and a large orange juice, every single day. But now I eat peanut butter oatmeal or eggbeaters at home and have cut my calories and increased my nutritional satisfaction. It's also a lot cheaper!

emoticon I used to allow my weight to keep me from enjoying fun activities. But now I have set goals for activities when I get below the max weight for them. I have a list of things I am going to do in 2015 that my healthier, fitter body will allow me to enjoy including tandem skydiving, zip lining and hot air ballooning.

Day 1 (take 2)

-I used to be scared to be in the same room as a tin of sweets or biscuits but now I know that I can ignore them and feel totally relaxed.

-I used to avoid social occasions before of fear of the food I won't be able to resist but now I plan in advance of what kind of foods I am going to allow myself to eat and can stick to that.

- I used to feel like I am an 'addict' unable to resist certain foods - which are everywhere but now I am aware of why some foods are 'triggers' and can choose to abstain.

- I used to get bored with things and not maintain an exercise programme but now I used tools to motivate me, like Spark challenges, star charts, team support, trackers

- I used to find it tedious to track my nutrition but now I value the information this give me to help me manage my diet.

- I used to feel hopeless about maintaining a slim/fit body and have always relapsed in the past but now I know that if I keep following the guidelines offered on Spark People I can find support to be a successful maintainer.

When I became the leader of this team in June 2014, these 100 days lessons were already in place. One of the quirks of Spark People is that I cannot edit them or delete them so it can sometimes get a little confusing.

As a team we are going to begin our next round of 100 Days on January 1st.

Here is a link to Linda's blog for Day One which also includes her answers to the study questions.

If you click the "sorting last post on top" button in the upper right of this thread, it will reverse the sort order and take you to the original lesson plan for the day.

Hope this helps!

***I just read the email that gives the instructions. Sometimes I forget about that mail feature! Anyway, will start Day 2 on Tuesday, December 30.***

1. Make a list of any fears or negative behaviors that have hurt your weight loss success in the past. Now read these out loud to yourself and then say: "I used to be that way, but now I'm different!"

I used to give up on a diet before I even really started.
I used to not try my best.
I used to continue the same eating behaviors (too many sweets - mostly)
I used to not track my food regularly
I used to quit too soon.

I used to be that way, but now I am different!

2. Then write new endings for them by completing this sentence: I used to _________________ (fill in your old behavior), but now I ___________________ (write in your new ending).

I used to give up on a diet before I even really started, but now I am going to stick with it for at least 100 days!
I used to not try my best, but now I know that this is a matter of my life, so I am devoting myself to it.
I used to continue the same eating behaviors (too many sweets - mostly), but now I stay away from sweets completely (for at least 30 days) to see how I feel.
I used to not track my food regularly, but now I write everything that I eat, even if it isn't what I like to see.
I used to quit too soon but now I have a great support system, the knowledge, and the skills to succeed!

A lot of it is because of Sparkpeople! :)

I used to eat if stressed and now I try and find some non food related thing to do if stressed

I used to not drink enough water and now I make sure I have at least 2 litres a day. (The more water I have the less likely I am to fall off of plan so probably was a Thirst not Hunger issue when I used to eat)

Day 1 (starting again)

I used to fear giving up or failing, but now I fight for what I want.

I used to over eat at night and not track my foods, but now I will plan for that evening snack time before I get the munchies.

I used to eat my emotions, but now I'll journal or talk things through.

I used to make excuses for not working out regularly, but now I will make time for myself and not bend.

I used to give in to sabotage..."It's only one bite," or "You already blew it on...so what's another..." but now I will take control at my next bite/drink because I control what goes in my body.

I'm looking forward to this 100 day challenge!!!

Day 1:

I used to snack regularly on chocolate, but now when I buy chocolate I will buy the kind I love and divide it into small portions and put them out of sight. When I get a chocolate craving (once or twice a week), I will have one small portion and that will satisfy me.

I used to find excuses not to exercise every day, but now I am committed to at least 10 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Most of those days, I will do a minimum of 30 minutes.

I used to not drink enough water, but now I have a water bottle that holds 32 oz. I will fill it twice a day, first thing in the morning and again early afternoon.

I used to say, a little extra (fill in the blank) won't matter, but now I will not take those second helpings or other extras that don't fit into my calorie allowance for that day.

Day 1 ... I use to:

buy those little bitty chocolate candy bars and tell myself I'll only eat one or two at the most so they can be counted in my calorie intake. Obviously, I didn't eat just 1 or 2, and the sugar just made me want more of anything

start exercising and then find a way to "not" make time for it. The exercise part is the most difficult for me.

be all or nothing ... either carefully watching my plan and doing it or back to normal not doing anything.

Hi...I started day #1 just today.....1 hour in... emoticon But was looking around the team and discovered this lesson sight.

Mona....I am right behind you. Figured would be a great start and help during the upcoming holidays.

Day #100 for me is actually January 7th...2015

#1...I use to reach for unhealthy snacks between meals.....I will now...wait til meal time or eat something healthy and light to get me over the hump.

#2....I use to procrastinate about exercising. I NOW will get my butt to the gym ..for my health if nothing else.

#3....I use to put others 1st before myself. Now...I will take better care of "me".

Mine are:

1. I used to stress eat work candy in the afternoons, now I take a walk with my camera.

2. I used to snack after dinner, now I have a flavored water.

3. I used to have every intention of working out after work but I'd be too tired, now I put in 10 minutes (get IN the pool or ON the bike) and let myself stop if I'm still tired but really after 10 minutes I know I have my second wind.

Hey Mona - I finally made it here! I like your attitude "with God's help"! That is mine as well.

Day 1 - I used to be that way...but now I'm different:

I used to put off exercising till late in the day and then not do it. But now I'm different, now I schedule my day and do my exercise on a regular basis.

I used to skip breakfast and then eat too much the rest of the day. But now I'm different - now I eat a good breakfast and schedule regular snacks and meals through the day.

I used to stay up late and not get enough sleep, but now I'm different. Now I go to bed between 10 & 11 and get 8 hours sleep.

I used to put off Bible reading and prayer but now I schedule it and do it as a priority.

I used to let the house get cluttered and then madly clean up - but now I follow Fly Lady routines and keep it neat.

I used to eat out a lot, but now I plan meals and prepare most of them at home.

I used to give in to my cravings for salty snacks and high fat foods but now I stop and think and make healthy choices.

I used to eat mindlessly but now I eat intentionally, considering each choice in light of my overall plan.

I used to get discouraged and quit when I had a bad day or weight gain, not I get up and keep going and get right back on track.

I used to make a lot of sorry excuses for getting off program, but now I will put my health and well-being as a priority!

As a bonus I am adding some of my sorry, but sometimes creative, excuses:

I deserve a treat
I am eating with someone else and don't want them to feel bad about what they are eating.
I've been good all day, this time won't hurt.
I'll start over tomorrow.
I paid for it I might as well it eat - don't want to waste good food.
It's cold, raining, too hot, too many mosquitos, and besides, I'm tired.
It's too dreary and boring to use the treadmill in the basement.
I am craving something salty...greasy....sweet...
This time won't matter.
I'll make up for it before I weigh in.
I will just have a taste -
All things in moderation after all... emoticon

SharonLee - Michigan

*If I quit now I will soon be back where I started. And when I started I was desperately wishing to be where I am now.
*I already know what giving up feels like. I want to see what happens if I don't
*I didn't come this far to only come this far!

Day 1: I Used To Be That Way
Sept. 29, 2014

100 Days Challenge 2014
Day 1 Summary
(Includes my answers to the 3 questions)

Starting today, eliminate the belief that things always go a certain way or that you never stay with your goals. Whenever those doubts creep back in, immediately give yourself this new message:

I used to be that way, but now I’m different!

Then come up with a new statement that describes what you can do to prevent this. If the doubts return, remind yourself that now you handle life differently.

Now with God's help I am taking back control of my life!

Today’s goals (my answers are in blue)
1. Make a list of any fears or negative behaviors that have hurt your weight-loss success in the past. Read each one out loud, and then say, “I used to be that way, but now I’m different.”

Giving in to sweets and BAD snacks; No exercise program; neglecting self-care projects~knitting, quilting, cross-stitch.

Now, I’m telling myself, “I used to be that way, but now I’m different!”

2. Write new endings for them by completing this sentence:
I used to choose sweets and chips for snacks._all kinds___________ (fill in your old behavior), but now I am going to choose fruits, veggies, and healthy snacks.fruit veggies protein snacks____________ (write in your new ending).

My answers:
* Making sure I drink 8-10 glasses of water a day
* I used to let my exercise program go, but now I make it a daily priority

* I have had no exercise plan but starting out slowly and planning to increase as often as needed.
*
I used to skip my self-care entirely, but now I do something every day~~quilting and knitting right now!
*
Eating sweets or salty snacks everyday but now choosing fruits, veggies and protein snacks.
*
I used to eat dessert routinely, but now I appreciate coffee or tea after dinner, and eat dessert only when it’s special.

3. Read your new outcomes often, and then live in a way that makes them true.
I plan to read my list at least 5 times today!

My negative behaviors were:

Doing well all day then coming home and raiding the cabinets
Deciding not to exercise early morning promising to do it in the evening and then either feeling too tired or not finding the time
Listening to the voice inside my head.....oh its just one......you already messed up now....etc.

I USED to sabotage myself and my efforts but NOW I will push through my cravings, doubts, and feeling

198.8 pounds – disgusting, disappointing, sad, depressing = all about myself and what I have done to myself. It’s all my doing. Shameful! I look terrible. I feel tired all the time. I have no energy. I am depressed. I am sad. This weight has got to go!

I used to think that way about myself, but now I am different. Now I will stop beating myself up. I will nurture myself by say something kind to myself daily, eating foods that make me feel good and avoid foods that make me feel lousy (sugary foods) and do some form of physical activity each day.

I used to give up on a diet plan after about a week saying the diet is “too hard” or that I was being lazy and not really wanting to give it a go. Now, I know how to eat right; I just need to stick with it. I will eat healthy, whole foods. I will enter the foods I eat in Spark People, read articles and blogs to help keep me on track. The weight will come off, just stick with it.

I used to skip workouts/exercise and justify what or why I didn’t do them. But now, I will begin taking yoga classes several days a week and walk with my husband and dogs on the days I don’t do yoga. Who know, perhaps I will do yoga and go for walks on the same day. Extra activity; got to love that!

I used to eat junk food or any food available, hungry or not, mostly not, when I am stressed, feeling anxious and feeling out of control of situations. Usually the situations don’t involve me, but I don my “cape” anyway and try to fix them. But now, I will speak up and deal with what I am stressing or feeling anxious about through journal writing, reading Spark People blogs and blogging myself, and be mindful that not all situations are my problems to fix and keep “not my circus, not my monkeys” in the back of my mind.

But you know what? This is the last time you ever have to weigh that much. Just give yourself today, and then tomorrow, do it again.

You are going to do GREAT!

Jill, I am here for you, too. We can chat everyday or every time we need to. I seems to be much like yourself and i understand how you feel. Like you, I already don't feel so alone and hopeless; we are a family in this weight loss journey.

Today I wrote down why I want to lose weight, had over 10 good reasons but most of them are for health reasons, feel better, move well without a cane, get off some RXs I'm on, Not be ashamed of how large I've become. That's the main reason I haven't gone to my cousin's annual Easter Get Together in years. Lower my glucose levels, Be able to buy clothes in a normal size and get rid of all my plus size clothes, Look better & take some pride in myself, Have less knee & back pain, etc. I put this in another Team thread in a little more detail but basically about the same.

I also have many things I do that sabotage my losing weight:
Lots of emotional eating
Eating everything on my plate even when I'm full
Eating and craving something sweet and/or salty and eating way too much unhealthy food
Not exercising enough
Not usually eating within my calorie range, eat too many calories, etc.
Eating too much Take Out Food, It seems I also crave it and the more I eat of it the more I want it again the next day
Not Weighing in every week, so now I'm going to be WI daily as suggested by Linda Spangle.
Often have no willpower so I overeat especially when I'm tired, stressed or worried about something

Again, I put the above on another Team Thread. . .

It's just 7 pm here as I live on the West Coast so you're probably 2 or 3 hours later than it is here.

I'm loving this New Challenge and thank you Barbara (~KINDREDSPIRIT~) for suggesting it to me. I already don't feel so alone and hopeless and accepting of my being almost 250#s again. I've actually gained weight instead of losing it since the beginning of the year. So this new Challenge is giving me back my Willpower and Hope there is a way for me to get my eating under control and move forward again in my WL Journey. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Day 1 emoticon

1. My list:
* scared of failure; looking to perfection
* managing loneliness overeating on sweets
* managing emotions eating; not planned snacks

"I used to be that way, but now I'm different!"

2.
*.I used to be scared of failure, looking to perfection in other programs, but now I know no one is perfect, I can slip, but right I away I will stand and keep on going. These are like baby steps, I can fail and get back on right away.

* I used to manage loneliness overeating sweets, but know I can cry about that feeling and then I will come to the Sparkpeople's team and look for support, read an article or Blog.

I used to manage my emotions eating not planned snacks, but now I can feel the feelings and keep on going. If the feelings turn to be hard I can come to Sparkpeople's team and look for support, read an article or blog about the intensity of my feelings. I can always pray about my feelings and seek God's help handling them.

Congrats on your first day...I remember 21 days ago when I started...you are so right - these lessons 'are' powerful...I found that if I look at them as learning lessons which can change my behavior, I found them enjoyable. Wishing you the best!

Wow - this lesson is powerful! Being 57 years old, and never once having succeeded at reaching my goal or even getting close, that failure is just my expected result. Do I really BELIEVE anymore that I can really DO this?!? This lesson says YES, I CAN!

KEY THOUGHT: My previous failures have absolutely NO EFFECT on my ABILITY to succeed now - or, in other words - My past failures do not determine my future success!

1. I used to give into tempting, fattening unhealthy foods easily - but now, I think about how disgusting and destructive they are and say "NO THANKS"!

2. I used to give up on my diet when I slipped up and keep starting over - but now, I get right back on track and keep going - all the way to my goal!

3. I used to let special occasions like birthdays, holidays, vacations, etc. be a cause for falling off the wagon - but now, I see them as a challenge I can over come with planning, preparation and determination to win, in spite of the temptations they present!

"Success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile dream."

"Success is the result of small efforts -repeated day in and day out! "

If you have enough strong days in a row, that makes a strong week. If you do it again, you’ll have two strong weeks. Do it some more, and you’ll have built a strong month. Keep it up, and you will have a strong year—one strong day at a time.

I have been doing this in a notebook but today I posted the notes to my blog here. I really like the idea of this mantra. I used to but now I. Awesome

I used to eat for emotional reasons but now I verbalize my emotions or, if angry, scream into a pillow.

I used to drink pop but now I drink water.

I used to follow any quick loss diet. Now I know I will regain that weight and more.

I used to get dehydrated from not drinking enough water. Now I know how important the water is and will try to drink 6 to 8 cups a day to start.

I used to be a couch potato on my computer all day. Now I do a minimum 10 mins a day of exercise and hopefully more.

I used to not eat breakfast. Now I will eat fruit or a smoothie for breakfast.

I used to sleep 3 or 4 hours a night. Now I will sleep at 6 to 8 hours.

I used to be a diet perfectionist and binge when I failed to stick to it. Now I know it is ok to fail once in a while and just keep going.

I used to eat 1 or 2 fruits/veggies a day. Now I will strive for my 5 a day.

I used to feel defeated and depressed over my body and dieting. Now I will post positive quotes around the house to stay motivated.

I used to buy weight loss meditations and never open them. Now I will utilize all the tools for weight loss I have purchased over the years.

1. I used to think anything less than 100% was a failure. Now I know any steps forward are an improvement on being healthy.

2. I used to track for a day or two and quit. But now I am going to track everyday because I realize it lead to success. And it is an important record for me.

3. I used to say "I don''t care" as an excuse to eat what I wanted. But now I do care. I have good reasons to care.

4. I used to start on sweets (cookies, cakes, etc) and eat and eat. But now I am going to practice moderation. I can always have some more tomorrow.

5. I used to think I had to plan meals and stick to it right to the letter or else I had failed. Now I realize that doesn't work for my life. so I will basically use the plate method and rely on canned meats, veggies and fruits from my cellar.

I use to feel jealous not eating what my family eats, now I don't feel that way any more because I'm feeling better and I know it's because I stay away from the junk food.

I use to feel exercise wasn't worth it, but now I know it is.

I use to not want to exercise, but now I do it first thing in the morning, feels great!

I use to feel deprived eating raw veggies and fruit, now I feel empowered because I realize I am what I eat. I look and feel so much better.

I use to weight myself every day, now I only weigh in once a week.

I used to use to eat mindlessly when I was stressed out BUT NOW I find other healthy methods to relieve my stress (i.e. mediation, working out, writing...) not eating.

I used to start a work out program only to get bored with it or too busy to make time to continue with it BUT NOW if I get bored I find a way to make it interesting, or pop in another DVD to work out to, then go back to my workout program and I make time to work out.

dislike getting hot and sweaty BUT NOW I look forward to my shower I used to drink between 1 to 3 glasses of wine or cranberry and vodka's a night to wind down from my stressful work day, BUT NOW I understand how destructive that behavior was and have not had a drink since May 20, 2014.

I used to not have a plan (for my eating or work out schedule) this was setting myself up for failure BUT NOW I take the time to make a weekly work out schedule and eating plan.

I used to believe if I got off track and started gaining weight that I had failed. Now I know this is a journey and there will be ups and downs, but I have to keep trying.

I used to be an emotional eater, but now I am journaling when I feel emotional.

I used to be afraid of losing because I was afraid of re- gaining the weight. Now I am not afraid because I have the tools and support I need, thanks to Spark.

I used to think I deserved sweets. Now I know I deserve to be healthy.
