In some foods, I like texture, like in non-leafy salads, salads with different combinatons of tomatoes, beans, corn, bell pepper, potatoes or for sandwich fillers like egg or tuna salad sandwiches - I like some crunch, so I add chopped sweet onion and celery.

Some foods have unique flavours like roast chicken, salmon with quinoa or salmon with rice, lasagne, polenta with gorgonzola cheese, thai curry chicken, and some sauces are the bomb like pesto.

These are a few of my favourite textures and flavours.

I enjoy making an effort to enjoy the flavor of a food. I think it gives me the opportunity to eat slowly and make the meal a delightful experience.

Flavor or Texture?

Hard to say. Some I like for flavor some for texture, but usually it's a combination of the two.
I'll do the exercise later today and pay attention to both.

Day 39 — Flavor or texture?

I realize it depends on what is going on in my life when I think about flavor or texture.
If I’m very busy, something crunchy works and I probably think less about the flavor.

When I’m very relaxed and happy it is the flavor that I spend time to enjoy!
More important for me is to slow down, think about my food and enjoy it, whatever it is.

Day 39 - I love all kinds of flavors and textures.

This lesson made me realize that in my life, I have looked to potato chips a lot for comfort and escape. I'm at a good place emotionally right now, so I have not thought about it. (Plus there are no chips in the house.) I definitely go to the cabinet for carbs when stressed or tired.

I did well this evening. I was hungry on my way home, and had a carb-crave for something crunchy to go with my planned hummus and veggies. So I stopped at the shop and bought some celery.

I had a bowl of homemade soup (leek & potato), and a plate with hummus, celery, carrot. I also treated myself to a glass (1 unit of alcohol) of wine, and ended my meal with a decaff coffee with some rum flavouring in it.

I needed the 'treats', the tastes AND the textures. I still had the shadow of a carb-craving, but I was replete enough to ignore it. I can have carbs for breakfast in the morning (Bagel with peanut butter!)

100 Days Challenge, Day 39 Flavor or texture

For me it is BOTH!

Today’s assignment

1. Pay special attention to the flavor and texture of each of the foods you eat today. Write down what you learn about your food preferences.

For lunch I had a Vanilla protein smoothie with frozen banana and PB powder. It was very sweet, smooth, cold and creamy. Next time I think I'll sacrifice the PB powder and try real peanut butter and adjust for the calories. The sweetness was too much.

For dinner I had homemade turkey chili made with fire-roasted diced tomatoes, kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans, ground turkey browned in olive oil, small peas and frozen corn. My hand got a little heavy with the cayenne red pepper so I added a tablespoon of sour cream so it didn't overwhelm my stomach. I'm still adjusting to the fact that my digestive tract has changed since I've gotten older. I used to be able to eat jalopenas and goat peppers but not anymore. I did add some mild chunky salsa and the texture of biting into the peas, corn and chunks of salsa was delightful. Oh, I also added 11 oyster crackers and the texture of them was pleasing.

2. Select one of your favorite foods. Describe its texture in great detail. Use creative words as if you were writing a gourmet review for a magazine.

3. See if you can correlate your favorite textures with specific events, people or emotional needs. Plan how you can handle these in other ways. Describe your ideas for this.

Joy is a Choice. Choose joy moment by moment.

When all else fails, persistence prevails.

Injoy:) Carolyn

Some times I go for the flavor. Other times I may go for the texture.

I think something that seems to be an absolute many times for me is that if I eat something salty I frequently crave something sweet afterwards.

I love creamy things.
I like deserts so sweet foods are definitely at the top of my list.
I like spicy things.
I like crunchy junk food, not so much the crunchy vegetables I should eat.
I do not like the texture of meat (especially lean cuts) so this is one category that has to be all about the flavor.
I really like that hand-to-mouth action so any food that can fit that bill is at the top of my list. Unfortunately, many of those foods are not good for me.

Oh, what the heck, I love it all ! ! ! emoticon

Day 39 Flavour or Texture

Once again I can say Texture all the way, I love crunchy foods. I love apples, carrots, salad with my foods if possible, crispy meats (bacon, gammon, even chicken sometimes).

I have to admit I too enjoy the flavour of things and have a special tea planned for tonight for my dh and I, perhaps it should be our eating experienc! emoticon emoticon

But ... I do want my food to have distinctive flavor. I like spicy flavorful foods.

Flavor and Texture seem to be intertwined. I still tend to prefer the textures that take awhile to enjoy -- such as frozen vanilla yogurt that has to melt on my tongue, or chewy cheese-topped baked macaroni with brown edges, or crispy salad with olive oil and tangy vinegar dressing. The contrasts are what is good with all these dishes.

A comment for Gill in regards to buying the doritos to go with the chili. Something I've found to be good lately is chopping a couple big radishes as a topper for soups and chilis. No -- not TOTALLY like the corn chips, but surprisingly good with the crisp texture they provide. They add some flavor, but it's not overpowering...and it's *almost* like having some chips crumbled over the top. And I realize they don't provide the dry aspect to the wet chili -- but....just saying...maybe someone might find it helpful. emoticon

I eat food for both texture and flavor equally, I think. I love crispy and crunchy best, but soft and creamy come in as a close second. I like many types of flavor - salty, spicy, sweet, sour/tart.
I really don’t know that I have cravings for a particular type of food based on my emotions. I will really have to pay attention to that more. I do crave foods according to the weather though - if it’s cold or rainy, I go more for the warm, soft comfort food, whereas if it’s hot out, I am more in the mood for crisp salads I do like combinations of textures and flavors. Creamy peanut butter on crunchy celery sticks or toast, crunchy carrots in creamy dip, cream cheese on a toasted bagel, cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit and almonds for crunch, etc. I try not to eat ice cream much, but my favorite is to dip salty, crunchy salty pretzels into the creamy, soft and sweet ice cream!

Flavor OR texture? Both! But, right now I’m eating petite carrots for texture, my peanut butter on soft tortilla sandwich for both (peanut butter is crunchy), and my glass of milk for the silky mouth feel. Oh, and my coffee for flavor! Happy camper!

I can certainly relate to previously chomping for anger... emoticon

Flavor. I desire salt and sugar. It can be a mushy mess or crunchy. I would welcome both.

Flavor or texture...........my husband won’t eat mushrooms because of the texture.....I love mushrooms! He orders pepperoni on his pizza....I order mushrooms! Why do I want to eat potato chips when I eat a sandwich? Is it the crunch....is it the salt? Texture and flavor go together........sometimes thinking about eating certain foods makes me feel good......maybe that’s the answer.......imagine eating! Mind over matter.......can I do this? emoticon

Day 39 Flavor or texture?

Perhaps you discover that certain foods appeal to you because of their texture. Some foods don't have much flavor but their texture brings you back for more. Are you eating for Flavor, Texture or maybe emotions?

Emotions behind the textures. When you begin eating something and you can NOT seem to stop, think about what the texture might be doing for you? Maybe it feels soothing or comforting, causing you to eat more so you can feel these emotions again and again.

If you recognize you're eating for texture, identify what you might need emotionally. After you figure this out, create a strategy to meet those needs in a non-food way so you can take care of yourself :)

Are you pretty consistent with your meals and snacks with a few usual exceptions like the holidays or do you find circumstances, events or emotions triggering your eating?

I do recognize I am an emotional eater. There are times I want to go eat Indian food regardless of what I have at home to eat for lunch.

+++++++++++++++
I think of potatoes and gravy as comfort food. When I am tired or stressed I like to eat mashed potatoes and a beef flavored gravy. I like to have a big pile of potatoes with a little dip to hold the gravy. I like to have lots of gravy on the plate too. As a child I ate potatoes and gravy.

I no longer eat snacks when I play cards, but when I did I always wanted crunchy foods like cheezies or potato chips.

Yes I can see how what I choose to eat is related to emotional needs. Maybe soaking in the tub would soothe me just as well. I could still eat the food, but limit how much I eat and then relax in the tub.

There was a fascinating piece on the radio yesterday evening - about how the colour of the plate affects how your food actually tastes, and also music affects how your food tastes! Isn't that amazing? It explains, in part, why different people have favourite mugs, favourite plates etc. Oh, the cutlery changed the experience too! Aren't we amazing (but also quite dumb! creatures!) We are ruled by our brain chemistry more than we'd like to believe. That's why this cognitive behavioural work we're doing with this Linda Spangle book is actually quite HARD!

emoticon

Texture certainly plays a big part in what I enjoy eating - I love to 'layer' my flavours to get a satisfying effect: this morning, for example, in my bread roll I'm taking for lunch, I layered Marmite, then peanut butter (no salt), then vegan cranberry cheese - with strips of yellow pepper in a separate bag, and a pear to finish. I have the creamy, salty, mouth-sticking, the crisp, the juicy. I may feel the lack of 'crunchy' later - I'm tempted to pick up a bag of crisps to go with it, but I also know I'm going out for a lovely Xmas meal this evening, so I'm over-riding my desire!

Flavor or Texture

I still think I eat for both flavor and texture.depending on the weather and my mood. When I'm cold, lonely I crave more smooth comfort foods like mashed potatoes and gravy. When I'm stressed or anxious more crunchy type foods like salads, nuts.

S l o w i n g down, being aware, enjoying the experience and stopping when comfortably satiated remains the goal. Making sure my food is no longer "diet food" but served with an added bit of butter, mayo or whatever makes it tasty and satisfying seems to work best now.

Day #38 Flavor or texture
My first reaction is texture might top the scale on my food choices, but then it's hard to separate the two.

DH was given a big bag of homemade peanut brittle yesterday that has a divine texture. I ate a piece of it and the initial sensation was very good, but then I noticed that it was right on the edge of having been taken too far in the cooking process -- almost but not quite burned. I stopped after one piece. DH kept on.

Juice or sodas - which to me have almost zero texture - have never been high on my list of things I have any desire for, even though their flavor might be very good. I love chewy and crispy foods -- Pizza and chips come to mind...but again that flavor has to be there.

I do find that eating crispy texture foods that are empty calorie (like chips) tend to make me keep on eating even after I'm not really enjoying them anymore. Eating crispy texture foods like carrots or other veggies -- is not the same! Guess it's crispy + fat + empty carbs + salt that makes things get out of control.

Day #38 Flavor or texture (definitely same as last time)
Each day I plan my meals and as I look over that plan I realize I eat mostly for texture in the morning with some combination of flavor and texture at noon and definitely for flavor in the evening.
Looking back at the tracker for several days seems to bear this out.

If I chose my favorite foods they would be soft, creamy and not spicy.
Mashed potatoes and gravy or macaroni and cheese come to mind.

Flavors. I tend to like salty more than sweet. I don't care for anything sweet for breakfast. If I do eat something sweet, I want something salty after it. I do not care for tangy or hot spicy.
Texture depends on the food. My favorite foods tend to be soft, smooth, or chewy. But if I am eating nuts, chips or crackers I want them crunchy.
I think I pay attention to flavor more than texture. But since it has been brought up for me to think about, I will pay attention to textures a little more and appreciate the whole experience in my quest to be a mindful eater.

List some of your favorite foods. Is it flavor or texture that make them a favorite?

Baked Macaroni & Cheese- both
Banana-texture
Mushrooms-texture
Carrots- texture
Cheesecake-texture
Good chocolate-both
Pizza-flavor

I have become aware that various emotions will cause me to crave certain textures as opposed to being a salty or sweet craving.

Creamy/Smooth textures are craved when I am

lonely
tired
hurting

Crunchy/Chewy textures are for when I am

angry
stressed
tense

I got tired, irritated and hungry between leaving work and getting home; my bus didn't turn up after a long day at work.

I ate Doritos and ice cream when I got home (as well as my meal). So when I succumb to 'emotional eating' I swing between salty & crunchy, to sweet & creamy.

Day 39 Flavor or texture?

~ Pay special attention to both the flavor and texture of each of the foods you eat today.
---I just had some crystalized ginger. Very spicy and a little mouth burning and also very, very sweet. Texture: gritty sugar but smooth candy itself. Somewhat chewy.

~ Select one of your favorite foods. In your journal, describe its texture. Use creative words as if you were writing a gourmet review for a magazine.
---I definitely want to crunch! Popcorn, hard toast, chips, nuts, crunchy peanut butter -not creamy!

~ See if you can correlate your favorite textures with specific events, people, or emotional needs. Plan how you can handle these in other ways.
--- Emotional needs run me definitely. Today I am very anxious. I stay anxious from morning till the time of , say, a certain doctor appt. I wish I could put it out of my mind. It wrecks the whole day. I should do only early morning appts. Then it would be over!

I'm a definite cruncher but, having been on very reduced sugar content for several years now, I find there is natural sweetness in all kinds of veg.
On Sunday, Hubby bought in desserts. I opted for a fruit crumble as the least sugary option and ate it. However I found the topping way too sweet and felt headachey and bloated afterwards.
I learn from incidents like this that I don't need the sweet stuff and my body prefers me not to eat it!

I choose salt over sweets. But that's not to say I don't enjoy sweets. Give me a Snickers and I'm your best friend.

I think texture plays a big roll in my diet. I like 'crunch' in my eating - carrots, celery, cucumbers, peppers, apples. Sweet and creamy is fine, but without the crunch I'm not satisfied. Thank goodness I don't crave chips anymore!

While I have been desiring food.. ice cream, I have not had it unless it was an "S" day. I have gotten better at not using food to help with emotions. If I remove emotional eating, healthier eating it so much easier!

But typing about it has me focus on it, so I will end here.

Day #38 Flavor or texture
Each day I plan my meals and as I look over that plan I realize I eat mostly for texture in the morning with some combination of flavor and texture at noon and definitely for flavor in the evening.
Looking back at the tracker for several days seems to bear this out.

If I chose my favorite foods they would be soft, creamy and not spicy.
Mashed potatoes and gravy or macaroni and cheese come to mind.

I like smooth and creamy textures. I realize now that I'm using it to soothe myself . Like feeding a baby. Basically I am feeding myself like a baby!

I guess I need to find other ways to soothe myself.

When I'm feeling good, I enjoy a variety of flavors and textures. A perfect meal would be balanced in flavors, textures and nutrients.

Flavor, flavor, flavor ... um, texture.

I love:

Ice cream
good cheesecake
good dark chocolate
fried chicken
smoked brisket and chicken

I now what good flavor ... but I enjoy crunchy things, too.

As I have stayed with my elimination protocol ... I insist on good tasting REAL food.

Day #39 Flavor or Texture
Another day to pay attention to my food and my moods.
Looking back at my previous answers to this question I know that for sure I am a person who uses food to cope with stressful situations.

Life is always going to be happening so I need to learn to separate my need for healthy nutrition from my want of unhealthy solutions to the stress.

Today I will focus on the flavor and texture of what my body needs and find non-food solutions for the stress that comes my way.

Day 39: Flavor or texture?
Do you like sweets and desserts or do you tend to reach for salty foods such as potato chips? Would you rather eat a crunchy oatmeal cookie or a gooey caramel roll? Do you love the pungent flavor of blue cheese dressing? Or might you favor the zing of a spicy burrito or a bowl of green chili?
Each of your answers reveals another aspect of what you love about food. Often it's not the flavor but the texture of foods that keeps you reaching for more. When you can't seem to stop eating a favorite food, it's possible you simply love how it feels in your mouth.
Flavor may not matter
As you pay attention to the foods you love, you may discover a lot of them appeal to you only because of their texture. In fact, some foods don't have very much flavor at all, but their texture keeps you coming back for more.
Think about which types of food textures you enjoy most. Do you tend to prefer crunchy and chewy or soft and smooth? What about harsh, slippery, or tingly? Consider the mouth feel of the foods you like best. When you bite into a thick, juicy cheeseburger, what sensations do you get with that first bite?
Mentally feel the contrast between eating a strip of beef jerky and an ice-cream cone. Picture eating cashews, then switch to peanut butter. What do you think makes the difference in why specific textures appeal to you? You may discover your "love" of some foods is based entirely on the way they feel in your mouth.
Emotions behind the textures
When you start eating something and you can't seem to stop, think about what the texture might be doing for you. Does it give you a way to chew hard and fast, the way you'd like to "chew on" your boss? Maybe it feels soothing or comforting, causing you to eat more so you can feel these emotions again and again.
If you recognize you're eating for texture, try to identify what you might be needing emotionally. Once you figure this out, address those needs in some other way instead of using food to take care of them.
Pay special attention to both the flavor and texture of each of the foods you eat today.
Select one of your favorite foods. In your journal, describe its texture. Use creative words as if you were writing a gourmet review for a magazine.
See if you can correlate your favorite textures with specific events, people or emotional needs. Plan how you can handle these in other ways.
I like both but mostly flavor- sometimes I like nuts- but favorite foods are pizza but I like steamed veggies a salad, and eggs and toast ice cream home made cookies pies and bars and quick breads. I choose them for the texture sometimes
sometimes it depends on the situation and the timing. in my oatmeal sometimes i like crunchy so add nuts or yogurt sometimes flavor so will add peanut butter.
Not sure if I am missing anything according to texture or flavor. guess I really don't pay attention to that.
Still the same as my previous posts- Missing a friend a near by friend. Most of friends live far away or busy with their families. But I tend to be busy with work, and TOPS and family too. but would be great to have someone can get together once in a while. sometimes I eat for boredom not that I don't have nothing to do but not in mood so get bored. still get that pull I need to be home for my Dad. Sometimes I envy those who have close relationship with their siblings too.
But overall I am doing average as I am maintaining my weight loss. do I want to lose more Yes and I will in my own time. starting a new menu plan Monday as using some menus from a diabetic book. but still counting my exchanges.

The possible link between texture and emotions is new to me.
I eat for texture because I taste very little.

I have to ponder this. emoticon

List some of your favorite foods. Is it flavor or texture that make them a favorite?

Baked Macaroni & Cheese- both
Banana-texture
Mushrooms-texture
Carrots- texture
Cheesecake-texture
Good chocolate-both
Pizza-flavor

I have become aware that various emotions will cause me to crave certain textures as opposed to being a salty or sweet craving.

Creamy/Smooth textures are craved when I am

lonely
tired
hurting

Crunchy/Chewy textures are for when I am

angry
stressed
tense

Day 39-Flavor or texture?

While I am aware of the different textures of the foods I eat I’m not sure I can make the connection between emotions and textures. I know I enjoy foods more if the texture feels right to me but can’t really relate them to specific events. I usually like a combination – oatmeal with small chunks of apple, dried cranberries and chopped walnuts or chicken salad with celery to give it crunch. Perhaps the closest I can come to relating the texture of food to an event would be chips and sour cream onion dip which we always had around the holidays or at parties when I was younger. Now I can substitute the healthier combination of humus or tzatziki dip with veggies or homemade pita chips.

I think that flavor calls to me more than crunch. I found it too easy to give up or cut way back on crunchy crackers, chips, nuts, etc. It would be much harder to give up other favorite foods. Along with some of you, I get a lot of variety by varying the spices I use and there are very few foods that I won't eat so my diet has a lot of variety before I even get to the spices.

As far as emotional eating and what missing element pushes me towards food......I think I really need to spend more time thinking about that. I know I miss two of my children who live far away; I'm also a worrier; my husband has been known to say that if there isn't anything to worry about, I worry about having missed something! Well, I hope I am not that bad....but I am going to have to think more about my emotional relationships with food.

This book has helped me moderate my emotional eating. That has been HUGE for me and now I know that I eat healthy, clean food every day. Do I make perfect choices? NO! Am I healthier than I was when I first found Spark? Yes! Through SparkPeople I found Linda Spangle and her books.....AWESOME! I have learned so much about myself.

FLAVOR - I go for flavor now. Last post I had mentioned missing 'crunchy' texture so ate some whole grain crackers. When I did my 30 Day break in Sept the plan I was following then had NO bread, crackers, pasta ... anything with flour. I had never 'done that' in my LIFE - go without bread ... but that 30 day break did the trick. I do not eat it (or even crave it like I did before) ... and the crackers are a rare thing now as well. It proves to me we CAN change HOWEVER we have to break the habit or addiction ... and connection in our brain/neural pathways ... which means abstaining for some time in most cases. I still want to say 'pinch me' - is it REALLY TRUE - I don't eat bread anymore - ha!

Maribeth - you beat me to it!!! I was going to suggest to Pam that she SPICE those veggies UP! I love my spices ... and so many are so good for us and help with lowering inflammation issues, balancing blood sugar, etc. etc. Plain veggies -yuck! Spices - there is such a range from pungent to sweet to peppery to tart, etc. - the 'aromas' even can get my taste buds going now. Love your pics/graphics - you always come up with the PERFECT ones for us!!!!

Phyllis - HUGE CONGRATULATIONS (early) to you and your husband on your 56th! Simply awesome!!!!

Have a good day all! my best, dj

Pam, I like the No S Diet. I do not snack, and I eat 3 pretty healthy meals. I like not measuring for point values or calories. I do measure my serving sizes.

"S" days are still an issue for me. I have a problem with sweets: chocolate, cakes, desserts in general... If I have no rule I will eat it (Yep like a little kid.) I get the "I deserve it" feeling.

I see you asked this on the general discussion board too so I will paste this answer there as well.

I answered this day's question: flavor. When I think of my favorite go to foods it is their flavor that draws me back to them. I will say that vegetables flavor (or lack of) do not. LOL. Now, when I get anxious I lose my appetite and this has 'allowed' me to not eat something for much longer than I would have done on my own (the last time was 16 hours awaiting my first physical in quite some time).

This is my second time through this book and I would recommend any one here who is going through this a first time to stick around for a second round. I am finding that I am absorbing more this time around and I am finding that I am making more progress in making changes in my overall relationship with food (especially eating for any reason beyond needing fuel).

Congratulations on 56 years Phyllis. I hope you find a way to celebrate this day in a special way.

Chele: How do feel overall this S diet is working for you? What is the best features of it for you?

Leslie: I understand how you feel about being alone. I have been without a partner and the majority of the time I felt good about my 'status' but there came a time when I did become lonely rather being a lone. Have you ever considered joining a mixed singles group either through your church or another older adults group? Sometimes, what we miss is social interaction. Good luck.

Take care all, Pam

I have a number of "repeat" foods and meals.
Since I am mindful and very selective over my choices
I opt for things that are going to be satisfying both with texture and flavor but nutrition and wise healthy choices.
( I have not had peanut butter in ages but when I do I like creamy as I'm not that fond of nuts in foods).
I have lots of crunch with my daily green salads topped with chopped vegetables and don't bring chips into the house, plus I'm not tempted with them anyway).

Another reason to go through these lessons more than once is to see the patterns of my life! Being anxious doesn't have to lead to giving up or giving in to over eating.

Day #39 Flavor or Texture
Another day to pay attention to my food and my moods.
The last time I wrote about being anxious because my husband was going for another heart operation. It was very successful!
Today I am thinking about our 56th anniversary on Saturday!

Life is always going to be happening so I need to slow down, take a deep breath and just do my best.
Right now I will focus on the flavor and texture of the banana I'm eating.

Day 39, 100 days Flavor or texture?

unconsciously I could eat a bag of chips Eating a cupcake normal sized I realized that it could disappear just as fast as a mini cupcake. so eating some of these foods are more for the company of others. but crackers need to be eaten one by one to make it last.

I prefer flavor. I believe it used to be because it was there . I love the flavor and aroma of coffee. chips esp. potato chips. I rarely eat so crunchy and salty don't matter to me. As I rarely salt my food either. Although I salt my watermelon as I believe it brings the flavor out.

Since I am not eating emotionally I don't worry about overeating because of it.

Being divorced for many years I would say I am missing companionship, friendship.

My weight is still up... but yesterday was a green day so I am keeping my head up.

Lesson 39: Flavor or texture

I like sweet, smooth and creamy. Fudge, cheesecake, smooth chocolate. I would pick chocolate over a cookie, cheesecake over cake or donuts. Ice cream without nuts or chocolate pieces (that are always hard), over Rocky Road, chocolate mousse before a pastry.

I find it calms me when I eat them. They slide off the spoon. I think this relates to a lot of foods I eat. But it is the combination of sweet and smooth. When I was little I had farina with a lot of sugar. I loved it!

So what am I missing emotionally? Hmmm…. It calms me so maybe eating it is nurturing and helps to relieve stress.

Replacement ideas:

Limit them to weekends and special days and make them special
Drink water or decaf coffee instead.
Read my book
Practice Bass
Practice singing my songs

I miss the slow weight loss... I think I am eating too much at my meals and "S" days are hurting my body.

Some thoughts about taste and texture-

Crunchy salty (potato chips, popcorn) when I'm contemplating or thinking seriously about something.

Nuts have to be unsalted. Normally almonds or walnuts. Almonds whole natural or slivered. Walnut pieces to add to salads or added to smoothies, where they end up as tiny tasty bits. Very occasionally dry roasted peanuts or cashews. Nuts function as sort of gourmet additions for me in measured amounts. Each type here has it's own texture and taste.

I love the new varieties of veg that I see in the stores. Red, yellow, orange and green peppers; purple, red, yellow and green tomatoes; yellow, white, red and purple potatoes, rainbow chard, and red, orange, yellow, purple and white carrots. Everything becomes so festive. I even make a two tiered lentil loaf using red lentils with red peppers, carrots and tomato paste and a second layer with green lentils, fresh basil, and parsley and a little pesto sauce. I love color in my food.

color is an interesting part of it, I hadn't thought of that before, but celebration is often colorful!

It is flavor and color when I am celebrating or happy. (colorful vegetables, multi-ingredient salads, broth soups)

Texture when I am sad or depressed. I want smooth, cream (ice cream, mashed potatoes, creamed soups).

goal is to be able to walk again

I'm now pretty particular about how I spend my food calories so I do look for tastes and textures I really enjoy. I too love to incorporate colors - remember I often take photos of my food!

Hi Everyone! I haven't been posting faithfully and I apologize; but I have been having a good summer and really putting a lot more time into being active. This lesson is one where I can really see the some of the ways in which 100 Days has helped me.

Pam - You've come a long way, baby!!! Isn't it great when we can see food as "food" and not as "comfort", "solace", "relief", or "celebration"?

Cat, Gill, and DJ - I also Load and layer - I really like multiple textures and flavors. I seldom CRAVE anymore but I have found that eating one sweet, salty, or creamy treat can still make me think about a second one, and occasionally give in. I haven't binged though in a long time.

Gill - I've been seeing recipes for overnight oatmeal; I'm going to try yours. Sounds yummy!

Leslie - I hope you are going to find that special friend. I am a person who doesn't need a lot of friends but I also am happier when I have one best friend. We have moved a lot because of my husband's career and I have had to leave several very special friends behind; we stay in touch but it is not the same. Keep your eyes open and you'll notice someone who might like to join you in a cup of coffee or accept an invitation to some event that you would both enjoy. That is a start and you will find someone that you just "click" with.

Aura - I love popcorn for a snack too. I'll be trying some of your ideas to spice it up. Never thought of cinnamon popcorn.

Day 39 - Flavor or texture?

I eat for flavor more than texture. A few days back I mentioned 'missing' my whole grain crackers and the 'crunch' ... so I had a few ... now I'm over it. I'm not tending to eat for emotional reasons as much anymore or out of stress ... finding other ways to deal with those issues ... finally!

I do the layering/loading I guess without realizing that was what I was doing. I've also become quite attached to the 'color' in my food combos ... if it's dull and boring I WANT some color added in - ha! So sometimes you'll see kale or red peppers or purple cabbage, carrots, etc. show up in a dish you wouldn't normally expect them to be in. I like it to be pleasing/appealing to the eye before it even hits my taste buds - ha!

Day 39 Flavor or texture

This is a day that I seemed to take to task as to the overall message. It might be because I am reading another book called "The Rules of Normal Eating" by Karen Koenig (published 2005) and she defined a 'normal eater' as a person who chooses foods without attaching any moral trait to it at all. If you prefer a chocolate fudge mint cookie (as I did last night) you just eat it. I wanted the taste and the texture and I made room within my calorie range to enjoy it without feeling remorseful or like I was trying to 'fill some kind of emotional need'.

Yes, sometimes, foods do both and I think that is the ideal situation and not necessarily one to avoid. Since we were infants in our mother's arms we have associated some kind of feeling with food. For example, I am sure that many infants get as much satisfaction from being held and cuddled while being fed their warm milk as they do from the milk itself. Our mothers especially nurtured us with food and I think every person will always associate those same warm feelings with receiving the food at the same time. I don't think we are at fault if we try to replicate that as adults provided we are aware of what we are doing.

For example, one of the few times that I want ice cream is when I have a cold. It is the only thing that I can taste. Also, it feels good when I have a sore throat. In fact, when you have your tonsils out I think hospitals still offer ice cream as one food someone post surgery can have. I am nurturing myself because I am physically ill not because I am emotionally ill.

So, although I am recognizing that certain foods seem to be the ones I want I do not feel I need to overanalyze them and say that I am trying to 'fix something else' in my life at that time. That might have been the case many years ago but the fact is today a chocolate fudge mint cookie is just that: a cookie that tastes great with a cold glass of milk.

Flavor or Texture??

I love, love Gill’s phrase ... loading and layering. I have been doing this without having a description for it. My salad today:

Kale chopped
Broccoli slaw
Raisins
Sunflower seeds
Smoked cheddar cheese
Habanero swiss cheese
Bolthouse Yogurt garlic salad dressing

If I had had red onion on hand ... it would have been in there too.

Strong flavors AND texture. I have discovered I need them both most of the time. Foods that take effort to chew satisfy me the most.

My "weak week" I binged on Ginger Snaps but not any ol’ ginger snap. The ones we buy are strong flavored and hard cookies.

I ate salty nuts ... chomp, chomp.
Crackers ... chomp, chomp.
Fiber One Bars Oats and Chocolate ... flavor and chewy.

I have discovered Fiber One Lemon Bars ... lemony flavor IF eating s-l-o-w-l-y and savored.

What am I missing emotionally???

Now that I am retired with my loving, adorable hubby, I can’t say that I am "missing" anything emotionally but sometimes become very frustrated when I can’t fix things for my loved one.

This is definitely a process ... I am getting better and better and better.
