Day 99 - It's Not In Here

food cannot be a solution to your emotional needs.

if hunger is not the problem, eating is not the solution

pull out all your resources for emotional coping

Strategies for emotional hunger or delicious food desire (gluttony)

- First of all, make sure I am hydrated ... drink something low calorie ... something warm if I need comforting - water, herbal tea, kombucha, home-made warm energy drink with honey, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper

- Give some thought to what is really going on that is giving me desire to eat and try to fix it or make a plan to fix it when I can

- Mentally go over my food plan for the day and when I will be eating next

- Proactively, have a food plan for the day so I have a nutritious plan to stick to when I feel like eating something not on the plan especially if that something is calorie-dense, nutrition-empty comfort junk food

- Get busy doing something productive, active, that requires concentration so I will be distracted from wanting to eat - have a back-up list of activities that take different amounts of time and pick one and do it

June -- Pacific Time Zone
Where you end up is more important than how fast or where you start out.
- Improved fitness and nutrition, energy and confidence are my rewards.
It is our choices...that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.
A PH (personal high) is the main goal, a PB is the sometime icing on the cake.
Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.
Sopra le nebbie delle valle e le vicende della vita sorge una promessa di luce e serenita.

Day 99, 100 days It's not in here!

LS suggests that no matter how good your food plan food can always look good some days and you will never be completely free from temptation! I agree with Phyllis so much that I have to try to have a Mental Thought/sign which says Its not in here!

I do have some spaces where there is 'tempting' food even worse with Christmas being just around the corner but need to try to 'Ignore the items' and remember they are not going to 'solve' the issues I am feeling! emoticon

Day #99 It's Not in Here!

I have a mental sign that says "it's not in here”.
Most places (cabinet, fridg) only have healthy options or things that need fixed or cooked.
It's easier to resist if I need to cook something, it gives me time to consider if I’m really hungry or not.
A cup of coffee or sugar-free hot chocolate usually works.

DAY #99 IT'S NOT IN HERE!

This really hit home with me:

"On days when the world lets you down, food will always have an appeal. It's simply quick, easy, and available, giving you an instant solution to whatever's troubling you. No matter how long you stay on your diet or maintenance plan, food will always look good! And you'll never be completely free of the temptation to eat something when you feel stressed or upset and need nurturing and solace."

Some time ago, Gill have us a link for the list that Linda provided for identifying your emotions that went with the exercise "I feel ------- because of -----." I find that list invaluable and I keep moving it around from which ever book we are working through. When we are reaching for that food and remember "What you are looking for is not in here", the next step is to ask ourselves what the heck is going through our heads, and just reading this list of emotions can give you some clues.

Then all you have to do is match the emotion up with an action -

1. Chew on something for head hunger
2. Drink some tea for heart hunger
3. Listen to some soothing music
4. Move toward joy with journaling
5. Take a short nap or visit what I have learned is called The Classroom Of Silence
6. Find something meaningful to read (remember self-help books are not allowed for this)
7. Step outside and take some deep breaths of fresh air

The pleasure of food is only temporary and will not move you any closer to the true joy of life.

Maribeth - I love the Valentine's picture you posted!

This is a good reminder to have a lot of tricks up my sleeve for those times when food seems like the answer. One of my best tricks is not to get started in the first place, especially early in the day. But - when something happens - like yesterday when I ate a homemade cinnamon roll at the Valentine's breakfast - and I could not get back on track ALL DAY -- it is good to have some things to try instead of eating more and more. And, truthfully, I did try some alternatives which worked to some extent for awhile. It is best not to get started. Once I had that buttery, sugary roll I wanted more and more. It awakens cravings that are not all mental or emotional, I believe. And...I'm blaming it entirely on the roll, but it could have been the stratas and other offerings that added to it as well.

Commercials. Magazines. Cooking shows. It's hard. No doubt about it.

I'm trying to replace what I used to crave with healthier choices. I need to be patient. Everything takes time and patience. I have very little patience with myself! emoticon

This is a lesson I use frequently....Why?.....Because it really isn't in there. It's not in the cupboards, the drawers, the refrigerator, the freezer, the grocery store, or the nearest fast food place or restaurant.

If I find myself gravitating towards any of those places while I am not hungry; I remember this lesson and say, (often out loud) "It's not in here!" That phrase works just like a stop sign to make me pause and ask myself what am I looking for?

I find boredom or procrastination are usually food triggers for me and I can recognize that and find other ways to deal. It is pretty easy now to redirect myself by just saying "It's not time to eat" and then taking myself away from the food.

I read Linda's blog today too and like her new phrase, "I'm not done yet". That one will be a great reminder for those days when I just feel like giving up because I really am not done yet!

I frequently look into the fridge by habit, but I pass up munching on food as my wife keeps a pitcher of unsweetened ice tea there which is always satisfying.

Great picture, Phyllis.

Definitely 'another' difficult one for me. There are several. Some get easier with time. Others remain tough. This is one of those 'remain tough' ones.

I know 'it's not in there.' Yet I continue to look for it when I'm upset. I continue to struggle with this, but I also continue to work on this.

Great pic and posts everyone!

I've learned that breaking old, bad habits is NOT easy. I know through repeated times studying these 100 Days that truly "It's NOT in here" but applying this rule is one of the hardest bad habits for me to break. I will Never give up trying. I will continue to have some hiccups but I will also continue to forgive, forget and get right back on track.

Like your picture Phyllis! That is so true, yesterday I thought I’m hungry for something but I don’t know what I want. I made popcorn then thought, now I’m hungry for something else. So I really wasn’t hungry......water would have been fine. I have to remember that!!

This is a great reminder lesson. Just yesterday I waned to eat off plan. I had a treat but stayed in my point limit. I was tempted a few times to sneak eat. Stressed right now as I am responsible to care for a family member that is having surgery tomorrow. That involves driving out of my comfort zone too. I have to be out for my comfort zone for at least a week, probably longer.

I will not be on much for our 100th day.

While I did not make a sign the last few times I read this chapter, I am truly thinking about it this time. Going to add a twist to it.

"It's not in here! What I really need is already inside me!"

I will make a small one and put it on my desk. This will help remind me that food does not help emotions.

I pick things up and put them back down again far more often than I used to - disrupting the route from hand to mouth! I've noticed that I have an internal dialogue that says "do you really want to eat this?"

I don't search cupboards at home, I am more likely to put the kettle on. I also have early nights more often these days - heading for the comfort & safety of my bed!

High shelves .....but, more significantly, a message to myself that a long, healthy, life was a gift not granted to my much loved Father. I am aware of the health issues we share in our genes. He didn't have that knowledge. I owe my family and myself the opportunity to live longer and with better health and, whatever discipline that takes, is what I will do.

Like Gill, I like my stop sign. Stop, think, consider options, pause. I made a motivational poster and I have it on my fridge. It is 11x17 inches, so it is pretty noticeable. The answer to emotional needs is not in food. I plan and pack my food for work, so I keep to my plan during the day. When I am tempted with something else I either follow the two bite rule or use my mental stop sign.

It is OK to want food but not eat it. Food does not make stress go away. Sometimes it causes more stress.

Repost of my previous entry!

Sticky signs aren't that helpful for me as I'm at work more than I'm at home! At work I often get 'emotional eating' urges - when I'm hacked off mostly, I get thoughts of sinking my teeth into something like a Snickers Bar.

So - at work, I have to use my internal 'stop' signs - and tell myself that it's not mealtime, have a drink of water or tea, and remind myself that filling my body with lumps of fat, sugar and salt prepared in tempting shapes and wrappers, will NOT be good for me!

I have an imaginary 'it's not in here' sign in my head - it gets pulled out quite often, but it's working!

Day 99, It's not in here!

That sign has been a motivator for me since my first time through the book. I've had people, even my grandchildren, ask me what it means and I point to the refrigerator and pantry and say, "It is not in there"! Then I point to my head and heart and say, "It is in HERE!"

I won't find heart hunger satisfaction by looking anywhere other than myself. When I do that, I am able to redirect myself.

Exercise day 99, walking with a friend tonight; we usually do a brisk mile and a half + one of the Spark TV Everyday workouts

Day 99 is amazing. Food definitely should not be a solution for emotion needs. I've used it so many times. What's amazing is I wasn't even aware of what I was doing in the beginning. Later, after numerous 'diets', I did realize it. Yet I still turned to food.

No more.

Make a sign that says, "It's not in here!" Then place it at eye level on your refrigerator or your cupboard. Whenever you start to open these doors, read the sign and remind yourself that food cannot be a solution to your emotional needs.

Day 99: It's not in here!
No matter how long you stay on your diet or maintenance plan, food will still always look good! And you'll never be completely free of the temptation to eat something when you feel stressed or upset and need nurturing and solace.
On days when the world lets you down, food will always have an appeal. It's simply quick, easy, and available, giving you an instant solution to whatever's troubling you.
To safeguard yourself from struggles with emotional eating, you've learned a lot of tricks such as placing notes on your mirror or repeating certain phrases to yourself. But here's one more way to catch yourself before you dig into the food.
"It's not in here!"
Make a sign that says, "It's not in here!" Then place it at eye level on your refrigerator or your cupboard. Whenever you start to open these doors, read the sign and remind yourself that food cannot be a solution to your emotional needs.
Then pull out all your resources for emotional coping and do something else. Instead of staring into the refrigerator at the end of the day, use healthier ways to get an "instant fix." Keep some baby carrots or celery available for when you want to chew on your boss. Maintain a good supply of your favorite teas or special diet sodas within easy reach.
Seek out the perfect music to play on those days when you're troubled or exhausted. Store it in your CD player or other device so you can hit the "play" button as soon as you get in the car or walk in your front door.
Move toward joy
While eating can certainly give you pleasure, it doesn't bring real peace or joy. After a difficult day, food won't provide the true level of nurturing and satisfaction you seek. So instead of eating to feel better, look for a solution that will actually address your real needs.
Continue to discover what works for you, then use these tricks again and again to help you manage life without reaching for food. If you weaken and you're tempted to rip open the cookies or chips, remind yourself, "What I really need isn't in here!" Then look for healthy ways to address your needs and move yourself closer to the true joy of life.
Make a sign that says "It's not in here!" Post it in an obvious place on your refrigerator. Write the same words in your notebook, and then define exactly what that means for you.
If your solution isn't found in the cupboard or fridge where can you find it?
Create a list of instant resources you can go to when you're sliding toward emotional eating
I still do open the fridge but mostly it is a habit. I rarely take anything. I go look and see if I have any fruit exchanges left if so I can have a fruit. Putting up signs may work for some but you have to read them to be effective.
I try not buy any trigger foods so most of foods i have in house are healthy. if not healthy it is in portion control. but as a KOPS and being on lifestyle change I can have anything just need to use portion control.
.

The sign doesn't work for me.
IF YOUR SOLUTION ISNT FOUND IN THE CUPBOARD OR FRIDGE WHERE CAN YOU FIND IT?
Hmmm good question- it depends why-
INSTANT RESOUCES
Call a friend or TOPS PAL
write a letter or journal
Go for a walk
Cleaning , gardening
getting out of house away from food.
Refer to a lesson of the book
I am going to go thru book again but I am going to spend more than a day on some of the lessons. some I need more time to work it. and do the lessons. so may start on Sunday or Monday.

Day #99 It's Not in Here
(I just don't bring it home if it isn't good for me!)

I have a mental sign that says "it's not in here" that works for me when I occasionally find myself searching.
Most places (cabinet, fridg) only have healthy options or things that need fixed or cooked. It's easier to resist if I need to cook something.

I agree, the cards are a great idea! emoticon

Maybe every day I can switch them and hang one on the fridge. Hmm, something to think about.

DAY 99 - IT'S NOT IN HERE!

Linda reminds us that there will always be days when it feels the world is letting you down and FOOD will still look good.

My boxes and fridge still have signs on saying 'Its not in here!' but I am now reading them and rethinking if food is what I really need right now and realising that usually is isn't food I need! emoticon

I am thinking of creating a Card Box of ideas to read when I have a 'Challenging Moment' based on my skills/techniques/tricks learned on my 100 days and having it near the fridge to read. emoticon

Jumping ahead as I will be busy the next two morning and don't want to forget!

Day 99 - It's Not in Here (the fridge or cupboard)

LOL there never is anything in there that I can't have!

If hunger isn't the problem, food isn't the answer. So I will find it within, by reviewing my plans and strategies for emergency emotional hunger and implementing a task to distract myself.

Day 99, It’s not in here!

This chapter is wonderful. Very often I feel this way after coming home from a hard stressful day at work. Less healthy food is always there. In the house, advertisements on TV. In easy to spot places at the supermarket.

I removed the "No S" magnet I had on my fridge the last time I completed this activity. Last time I thought it would be "a wonderful reminder to help me curb emotional eating and be honest with myself. A “Healthy Chele” is an “Honest Chele”." That is what I posted last time. But it did the opposite. It constantly reminded me that I was on a diet. I want to live my life! I follow the plan, but I do it because I want to be healthier. I think I will write the word "Mindful" on a note and put it on the fridge. Still thinking about my visual.

I am not one to play music to relax. I like a quiet house. Funny that I play electric bass, LOL! I would rather drink water or tea and read a nice book on my Kindle.

What I really need is not in a bowl of mixed nuts or a bag of chips. My solution can be found in my heart. I must always love myself no matter what happens. I must be "Mindful, Calm Chele"

One more day and I made the 100 days.

I haven't got into habit yet of drinking tea yet. I have music playing 24/7 in house so the putting on music routine wouldn't work.

If I need something I will vent online or a phone call. I plan on getting in to doing a physical activity like walking doing a DVD or WII or cleaning out a drawer or something like when i need a emotional fix or journaling.

Putting the lessons into practice takes time but one step at a time. I am continuing to follow my exchange plan and add small changes each week, day, month. I never thought I would get the exchange but now that i've been following it isn't as hard as I thought.  Now need to put exercise into practice too.

Signs and notes work for me up to a point then it is internal. I am so much more aware of compulsive eating. I used to do it and not even know I was eating. Now I know when I am heading in that direction. I am far more aware of my own actions and the reasons for those actions. Awareness is beginning to foster decision making. It is a process.

goal is to be able to walk again

I remember when Pam shared on another Forum that she bought herself a charm of Wizard of Oz Dorothy’s ruby red slippers. I loved this idea and the reminder … you’ve always had the power …

I am not much for visable signs posted through out my home … but I do like symbolisms.

I truly try to feel my feelings … instead of eating them.

I move my body when my mind is over loaded.

Love and peace will never be found in the bottom of a cookie jar!!!

We are such awesome women who have survived child abuse, raised children, fought for equal rights and pay, managed households and worked outside of the home, been care givers and supporters, suffered losses and broken hearts, and we have it within us to take the very best care of ourselves and be the best we can be.

Comfort is not in food … it’s within us … and within the Sparks community.

Displaying sticky notes doesn't work for me either. I have such an ability to look right by them. I can't tell you how many times I've looked and looked for something and after I find it, I then find the note that I stuck up somewhere to tell me where it is!

dj - You really expanded this lesson for me when you added "it's in me!" to the lesson, i.e. the situation which needs to be addressed for us. If we're angry, bored, stressed, lonely first look within to see what and then determine what will address it. And yes, it's not in there (the fridge, the sack of chips, etc). So, a little adjustment- "It's not in there, it's in me!" The problem is in me, and so is the solution! emoticon

A lot of great comments and ideas and suggestions.

My life has been going through some seismic changes in the past couple of years and are currently going through some new ones. Change---even really good change which is what I am experiencing now---can be stressful because I find myself still reverting to old habits or ways of thinking.

When I was writing my own comments to this day in my online journal one of the things that popped up about ' It's not here" was eating out of boredom. This seemed to be so predominant in the forefront of my mind that I couldn't seem to shake it. I asked myself, "Is this what my emotional eating has now gotten down to? Eating out of boredom." I hate to say this but Yes it has!

Now, when I am upset, I express my feelings. When I feel blue, I cry. When I feel really emotional and am grieving, I really don't want to eat at all. When I am excited, I really want to talk about it or just smile a lot. I am running out of reasons to eat emotionally. That is a good thing. I think it is. So, what is left is boredom.

I had to ask myself if you are bored, do you have to be? In other words, I might have had to accept this before (due to circumstances maybe) but do I have to now and do I really want to fix it with food? The answer is a double NO NO.

So, like what DBJ mentioned earlier. The answer lies both within but also possibly without; outside of myself. If I need more stimulation in my life then it is time to explore taking a class or engaging in something new and different. I actually can do this. I now have the 'means' to do so. Our public library offers all kinds of classes for free. I just have to sign up and then show up. I can reawaken some of my former interests and 'passions'. I have already started back with my art work since the beginning of this year.

So, no "it is not in the refrigerator or cupboard' and it also might not even be within me. I just might need to get back into the world that I once left and rejoin its 'craziness'.

Still have the pictures on my boxes but it doesn't always stop me! With the 100 days challenge and my Slimming World eating plan I have gotten better at making good choices! I agree it's not what's in the boxes but what's inside me as some of you very sensible and smart team members have said here! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm not one for notes stuck around anywhere. When I read this in the book earlier in the 100 Days lessons I really liked it. Today when I read it I instantly thought that doesn't quite work for me exactly. The thought that came to mind was: "It's not out there, it's in here!".

Meaning the 'reason' I'm reaching for food is 'in' me and I need to address that. That is where my relief and freedom will come from ... when I resolve what's 'eating me' inside. So now when I have those urges - to open the fridge or cabinet when not meal time - I will think 'It's not out there, it's in here" meaning the 'solution' is inside and I need to get to work on it.

Gill, I hear ya! At work I try to avoid treats that are brought tin as much as possible. If they are offered to me I decline. Some people can be pushy though. Luckily we have food restrictions due to students with allergies so the food that they bring in has to stay in the faculty room.

Day 99: It’s not in here! It's in HERE (points to her heart)!

Sticky signs aren't that helpful for me as I'm at work more than I'm at home! At work I often get 'emotional eating' urges - when I'm hacked off mostly, I get thoughts of sinking my teeth into something like a Snickers Bar. I'm less tempted by crisps (chips) these days, since I realised that they're pretty gross really - they used to be my nemesis!

Emotional eating is not my big challenge. Food is tempting when I'm hungry, because it tastes good, maybe because it's easier than cooking something healthier. I think the key for me will be batch cooking and having a lunch bunch and finding other ways to make food I'll be glad I ate when I'm energetic and sated so it's ready at a moment's notice when I'm tired and hungry.

Since my last day 99 I have had these signs on the crisps and scnacks box and on the cereal bars and biscuits box.
I do RECOGNISE that I actually need to READ these notes more and be aware as sometimes I do ignore them. Several times they did make me think twice during Lent so I know emoticon emoticon

Day 99.... It's Not in Here

I think I will make a poster with this reminder for my fridge, not just a little sticky note!

It is a simple statement, but so complex for an emotional eater. I know I have a long way to go, but I feel I have the tools to do it now.

This statement, "It's not in here" is so good that it deserves a repeat. This speaks volumes to me and it remains stuck to my refrigerator door on a sticky note. I see it often and chuckle because I know how true it is. It continues to remind me that food is not the solution to boredom, my entertainment or whatever needs I have the moment that have me looking for food when I am not really hungry.

Again, yes to starting Friends with the Scale!

I put the physical signs up on my first journey through this book. It is certainly true; I can't find what I want in any refrigerator, cupboard, or pantry!

That is a lesson that took me a long, long time to learn!

The signs are still there mentally and, like Phyllis, I'll be putting them back up in the kitchen if I find myself slipping.

Looking forward to starting Friends with the Scale!

Day #99 It's Not in Here
At this time I have a mental sign that says "it's not in here" and if things change I'll make a physical one. Most places (cabinet, fridg, counter) have healthy options.
I also have a STOP sign! emoticon
I am sure the lessons from this book will stay with me as I continue to make them a part of my life, practice, practice, practice!

What great ideas and signs all of you have. emoticon emoticon
I have one here on my collage that says," Tracking: do it anyway" because I can come up with so many excuses not to do it. I am finally doing it consistently but I think I should put it on my refrigerator to keep me going during the upcoming holidays.
Knowing that I will have to track extra food that I eat helps me to distract myself with other activities.
Just like Abby and Karen said it just takes practice practice and more practice! emoticon emoticon

Hey Abby! How cool is that? to have a fridge magnet with 'It's not in here!' on it! Love it!

These days I think my 'virtual' sign says "It's not an S day!"

So I eat three meals a day. No snacks, No sweets, No seconds. Those are the No S diet rules.

Day 99 – It's not in here!

Guess I'll have to make my own "It's not in here" sign to post on my refrigerator! emoticon

For me, it's a reminder that food is NOT the fix-all for my life or emotional reactions, which are often triggers to eating for me.

So I have to look elsewhere for my "answers," whatever they relate to. As a Christian, this means turning to God in prayer or reading my Bible or going for a prayerful walk or hike in times of stress or emotions, or even in those times when you're hungry but don't know why. I agree with Abby, this IS an ongoing activity to practice, practice, practice to reinforce everything I've learned and continue to build upon.

Day 99 – It's not in here!

When I ordered my last book from Linda it came with a refrigerator magnet (picture of a refrigerator that says “It’s Not In Here!” written on it). I keep it on my refrigerator door, eye level right where I can see it.
For me these lessons have explained a lot about how and why our emotions lead us to food. Armed with that knowledge I can now recognize the strong connection between my emotions and some of my eating habits. I now have some added knowledge and tools to help me redirect my actions and stop the emotional eating. I have learned some lessons well but others I need to continue to work on and improve upon. I foresee this as an ongoing activity...practice, practice, practice to reinforce the skills I have learned. And I’m sure there is much more to be learned.

Day 99 – It's not in here!

Note: If you find your way to the beginning of this thread, which was started in 2011, you'll find inspiration from posts made about this activity

Here are today's suggested activities:

1. Make a sign that says “It's not in here!” Post it in an obvious place on your refrigerator. Write the same words in your notebook, and then define exactly what they mean to you.

2. If your solution isn't found in the cupboard or the refrigerator, where will you find it?

3. Create a list of instant resources you can use when you're sliding toward emotional eating.

I haven't put 'Not in here' notices up but I have taped a list - ' Food for a Healthy Liver' - adjacent to the fridge and food store area plus a list - 'Healthy 100 cal snacks' - visible when I open the cupboard we keep cookies and similar.

I'm working on the reasoning that this will educate all of us, reminding myself and my hubby.

I read once that you can't find love in a cookie jar!!! Soooooo true. I plan to redo the 100 days along with rereading Life if Hard Food is Easy. This has been a great adventure and I want it to become more and more instinctive.

Hubby bought me some very pretty antique glasses that I truly enjoy drinking hot tea out of.

I have several quilting projects to complete.

I want to make home made Christmas cards for every member of our family.

BFF is on speed dial.

I am excited to be almost finished, it's a feeling of accomplishment. I hope to do this again after we finish the friends with the scale book. I don't have any trigger foods in my house either but to keep from emotional eating I have to remind myself of my mantra, nothing tastes as good as healthy feels. I also go for a walk, read or talk to a friend.

Day 99 - and there aren't many posts on this thread................ only a few get through, eh?!

Well, I'm so very pleased to be amongst those few - this has been the most effective self-help programme to do with eating that I have EVER come across. It really has modified my behaviour around food.

I have mixed feelings about being on Day 99. Sad that it's almost at the end (even though I know I can do it again and again if I choose to.) Excited to be near the finishing line. Perhaps even a bit apprehensive about not having the daily challenge to participate in. But I know we're starting the Friends with the Scale book on 15th - so that's to look forward to.

I don't think I need a sign that says 'it's not in here' - because it probably won't be (unless I've bought something that I don't want to allow myself to eat) my controls have to be at the point of purchase - and fortunately I only have myself to buy for, so I don't have to navigate the dangerous waters of other people's food/snacks! I could put a sign up on my cupboard though - so I don't go for handfuls of nuts, or raisins or something.

If my problem is not hunger, then my solution is not food: I can do 10 mins exercise, read a book, have a shower, go out for a walk, buy a tea or coffee if I'm out in town, or buy a rawfood energy bar to eat.

Instant resources: put the kettle on and make a drink, step outside and listen to the birds/breath the air, sniff my aromatherapy oil roll-on perfume thing, take a drop of Rescue Remedy, eat a piece of fruit, sigh, plan an early night with a book to read, chant

LOL, I love the "It's not in here" sign. I use to do that with books in my fridge/cupboard to jolt me into realizing that whatever I was thinking/reading that had frightened me into the kitchen and around food, wasn't going to go away just by eating.

One can't effectively hide from the monster under the bed/in the closet, one has to know they are/are not there and deal with them.

food for food reasons, non-food things for non-food things... this is something I am definitely working on!

One thing I have to do ever so often is move the foods... put the snacks out of sight, etc. never went as far as putting locks on (because then I would have to find the metal clippers!!! LOL but this sign works a bit like that for a reminder :)

emoticon Day 99, It's not in here!

No matter how long you stay on your diet or maintenance plan, food will still always look good! Andyou'll never be completely free of the temptation to eat something when you feel stressed r upset and need nurturing and solace.

On days when the world lets you down, food will always have an appeal. It's simply quick, easy, and available, giving you an instant solution to whatever's troubling you.

To safeguard yourself from struggles with emotional eating, you've learned many tricks, such as placing notes on your mirror or repeating certain phrases to yourself. But here's one more way to catch yourself before you dig into the food.

emoticon Before opening, read the sign
Make a sign that says "It's not in here!" Then place it at eye level on your fridge or your cupboard. Whenever you start to open those doors, read the sign and remind yourself that food cannot bea a solution to your emotional needs.

Then pull out all your resources for emotional coping and do something else. Instead of staring into the fridge at the end of the day, use healthier ways to get an "instant fix." Keep some baby carrots or celery available for when you want to chew on your boss. Maintain a good supply of your favorite teas or special diet sodas within easy reach.

Find the perfect music to play on those days when you're troubled or exhausted. Store the music in your CD player or other device so you can hit the "play" button as soon as you get in the car or walk through your front door.

emoticon Move toward joy
While eating can certainly give you pleasure, it doesn't bring real peace or joy. After a difficult day, food won't provide the true level of nurturing and satisfaction you seek. So instead of eating to feel better, look for a solution that will address your real needs.

Continue to discover what works for you, and then use these tricks again and again to help you manage life without reaching for food. If you weaken and you're tempted to rip open the cookies or chips, remind yourself: "What I really need isn't in here!" Then look for healthy ways to address your needs and move closer to the true joy of life.

emoticon Suggested activities for today
~ Make a sign that says, "It's not in there!" Post it in an obvious place on your fridge. Write the same words in your notebook, and then define exactly what they mean to you.

~ If your solution isn't found in the cupboard or the fridge, where will you find it?

~ Create a list of instant resources you can use when you're sliding toward emotional eating.
